The making of kinship : choosing kin, practicing relationships, and producing kinship symbols among the Inuit of the Belcher Islands (Nunavut, Arctic Canada)

Dupré, Florence 24 March 2014 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation is a contribution to the study of Inuit kinship. It presents an ethnography and analysis of contemporary kinship practices in the Arctic village of Sanikiluaq (Nunavut). The specific aim is to understand how kinship ties are produced, practised, and severed in a community that historically and socially has much in common with other Canadian Inuit societies of the early 21st century. The text thus covers the history of the Belcher Islands, the strategies currently used to establish kinship ties, and the kin identities of the people involved. The aim, here, is to understand the meaning of Inuit kinship without having to fall back on the flexibility of social organization to provide a satisfactory answer. After describing the historical backdrop to the recent formation of the village of Sanikiluaq, the first part (chapters 2 and 3) retraces the development of kinship practices during the 20th century and identifies the main strategies behind present-day kinship choices, e.g., choosing a mate, a godmother, a godfather, or a namesake for a newborn child. The second part (chapters 4 and 5) provides an ethnography and analysis of kinship choices in nine groups of siblings who are contemporary Qikirtamiut (i.e., Inuit of the Belcher Islands). It addresses how kinship strategies, production of kinship ties, and the actual kinship experience interrelate in terms of three factors that structure the practices and cultural theories under discussion: genealogy, identity, and daily life. The third and last part (chapters 6 and 7) pursues this analysis in places and settings where images of oneself and one’s kin group are used as means to produce, convey, and practise kinship. Topics include kinship practices on social networking websites, use of family photos, and several categories of tagging, which range from tattooing to drawing, that help people to identify themselves to others via the ontological identity that underlies their kinship ties. In sum, this dissertation describes Inuit kinship by showing how strategy processes, day-to-day practices, and forms of symbolic production relate to each other in the Arctic of the early 21st century.

De l'observation des pratiques des maîtres débutants : éléments de compréhension des organisateurs de pratiques typiques / Observing the trainee teachers' pratice : comprehension elements of pratical organisers

Françoise, Christine 03 December 2016 (has links)
The aim of our research is to try to identify the professional competences that have been acquired or are being acquired by new teachers during their training year (heuristic objective). To do so, we are following an ecological or complex paradigm (Clanet, 1997; Piot, 2014). We are particularly interested in the acquisition of competences related to three key notions such as time control, task, teacher-pupil interactions, that are studied by researchers integrated in the OPEN network (Observation des pratiques enseignantes). We presume that the professional development (Wittorski & Briquet-Duhazé, 2010), initiated at the beginning of a career, varies according to people and that this variability is interdependent of the level of these notions' competence mastering. The experience level is a major axis in our study; in a contrastive study, we shall oppose the trainee to the experienced teacher that are working in similar situations. If we aim to find out differences between professional trainees (Inter-trainee varaibility), we also claim to identify « invariabilities that show the presence of practice organisers » (Clanet, 2001). We try to identify typical beginner teacher organisers among teaching practice that are set up. To do so, we use mixed, quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (observation and interviews) methodologies. Questionnaires are about the mastering level of expected competences (Competence official list, 2013) and about the potential difficulties met by future teachers. People in the survey are trainees (N=178) as well as their temporary trainee supervisers (MAT: N=83). Eventually, the two representation studies are compared in order to assess their similarities. Six groups of three persons (a superviser and two trainees) in cycle 3 classes are being observed according to the three previously defined notions (Clanet, 2010). We focus on the notion of « task » in order to analyse the cross notions time and interactions. Common steps that are seen during lessons dealing with problem solving activities- and consequently tasks given to pupils- are analysed through time control and interactions. In an ergonomic perspective (Lepalt, 2000), we measure the gap between a « given » and an « effective » task through observation and interviews. The first results allow us to find out a typology of three main profiles among trainees. Moreover, in maths teaching at primary level, trainees meet similar obstacles that are common to beginners. The initial opposition between training and experienced teachers is replaced by a continuum which integrates complex teaching practice leading to multiple consequences. Through the result analysis, initial primary teacher training could be questioned in order to improve its quality, thanks to a reflexive process.

Knowledge and practices of primary health care workers related to the implementation of the revised infant and young child feeding policy 2013 in Blouberg Municipality, Capricon District, Limpopo Province

Mphasha, Mabitsela Hezekiel January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (MPH.) -- University of Limpopo, 2015 / Background: The revised Infant and Young Child Feeding Policy (IYCFP) 2013 encourages HIV-positive mothers to also exclusively breastfeed for six months, and to continue breastfeeding for a year with introduction of appropriate complementary feeding, while their children receive antiretroviral treatment. The aim of this study was to determine knowledge and practices of the Primary Health Care Workers (PHCWs) related to the implementation of the revised IYCFP 2013 in the Blouberg Municipality of Capricorn District, Limpopo Province. Methods: A quantitative descriptive study was conducted on 103 PHCWs. The questionnaire was closed ended. The questionnaire was developed based on the contents of the revised IYCFP 2013. A simple random sampling technique was used to sample nurses irrespective of the category. Data were analyzed through SPSS Software v23.0. Results: Most participants were females (91.3%), category were Professional Nurses (44.7%), aged between 31 and 40 years (44.7%) and also mostly worked for >10 years (56.3%). The results revealed that 97.1% of the participants have good knowledge about infant and young child feeding, 68% of participants were not trained on the revised IYCFP 2013, resulting to only 32% of participants having a good practice of this policy. Also 44.7% of the participants reported that they were not aware if clinics had a copy of this policy. The results further revealed that 92.2% of the participants reported that clinics still receive, keep and issue infant formula to HIV positive mothers, which maybe the reason the dieticians still receive requests for Infant Formulas to be delivered to HIV-positive mothers. Conclusion: There is a need for monitoring and evaluation to ensure availability and vi implementation of the revised IYCFP 2013; and also the need for in-service training on this policy in order to improve the capacity to implement the revised IYCFP 2013. Key Concepts Revised IYCFP 2013; knowledge; practice; implementation; PHCWs; infant and young child feeding.

Uma contribuição à modelagem de simulador de transações aplicado ao ensino da contabilidade geral / A contribution to the modelling of applied simulator of transactions to the teaching of the general accounting

Favarin, Antonio Marcos 11 August 2000 (has links)
Accountancy as a Science oriented to management and economy involves at the same time an specific value and more encompassing practices based on the purpose to guide, control and record economic events providing information for decision making. This concept demands, however, a systemic, holistic and interdisciplinary view from professionals to achieve high quality performance. Nevertheless, teaching strategies used both in the past and today have prioritized the operational aspects of Accountancy to the detriment of its informative ability which involves a judgment of value. The goal of this study is to help in providing an instrument that can bring together theory and practice in the teaching of General Accounting Level 3 that better expresses business reality and the needs of accountable information for decision making. In addition to the presentation of a simulator of business transactions as a game applied to the teaching of General Accounting. This model representation of business transactions as a game will be developed by means of action-research. This game will analytically unfold the decision making during the planning, performance and control of a process using the theory of games and leading the learners to make decisions and judge values. The key factor of this representation of business transactions and its application in class will not be the strategy itself, but the communication process. It will encourage the students to participate in a simulated situation. All in all, the key aspect is the role play, or in other words, the fiction that encourages the work not only having real facts, but also with the representation of real-life situation and this will increase students interest in the game. The final conclusion of this study is that the use of a simulator of business transactions as a game encourages and favors the learning process of the subjects proposed by General Accounting, therefore providing the students with the desirable comprehensive view.

Gestos de formação: experiências de integração ensino-serviço em saúde + arte literária / Gestures of training: experiences of service-learning health + literary art

Prado, Alessandro Rovigatti do 16 February 2016 (has links)
This work results of a professional master\'s initiative and combined scientific research with literary art, especially the novel Blindness, by José Saramago. The objective of this research: developing a essay based on a argumentation process to think about my health trainig from different experiences. To develop it, using the following argument: my experiences in the Programa de Educação pelo Trabalho para a Saúde (PET-Saúde) are an difference in my Physical Education training. To demonstrate the validity of this argument, I raised premises and I discussed about them in order to complete this process of argument. They are: (1) diversification of service-learning scenario; (2) students approach with the work environment; (3) interprofessional experience with a view to the exercise of integrality; (4) openness to other ways of thinking the body in Physical Education training. The purpose of the experiences of research participants, was made a meeting with two activities: written individual narratives and conversation circle like a focus group. As a result, presents experiences of service-learning of Physical Education students in primary care / primary health care from the PET-Saúde Project in the USP-Capital, version 2010-2012. From these, we point out that there have been changes in ways of thinking and operating health practices, beyond transform the professional at way of make him interested in defends the SUS as workspace. It is interesting to emphasize that the experiences have produced what I call gestures, movements that may inspire or instigate students and health professionals in reflection about the training.

No. of bitstreams: 1 MonicaGianfaldoni.pdf: 676232 bytes, checksum: 6feeb20c502e599da85e6c2d92f4fa92 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-11-21 / Ethics and ethic teaching were chosen, because of their importance and nowadays presence, as privileged issues. This work s goal is to present a discussion about ethic that can be described as coming from the radical behaviourism and pointing the educational principles that should be taught, enhancing the dialogue between the two areas. According to the traditional conception, ethics and moral refer to judgements about what is the good, and the acceptable procedures among a specific group; they are historically resulting concepts, products of autonomic, responsible, rational and free men, who act in a conscious and willing way. The skinnerian ethic system, intrinsic product of radical behaviourism and behaviour analyses, does not need of autonomy, rationality and freedom notions in order to propose the existence of three kinds of goods: personal goods, goods the others and goods for the culture, with the survival value as being the foundation of whole system. Skinner warned that part of planet s population does not know about the serious problems that affect us all and the other part which knows it has not taken relevant measures to change them, especially because the major difficulty is that the future always seems to be in conflict with the present. The education, as a control agency, has the privileged role of planning a culture and the educational policy plans, at the end, the Man and the educational practices. The explicit course of action proposals aims for to overcome the obstacles to culture survival producing. The culture adequate planning, let the person be controlled by circumstances, productive actions, it could take care of maximising behaviours with survival values. To transmit the socially produced accumulated knowledge, to produce the behavioural variability, to minimise immediate consequences and maximising the rare ones, to educate to the self-control, to insert the community into values propositions, to use collective criteria to overrule the individual ones, to re-establish the balanced reciprocity, to educate to the productive laze and amusement, to use the face-to-face control and the soft positives reinforcements, to avoid nasty events, to educate to the environment preservation, to teach social and scientific skills, using the technological control it is what could contribute to the consecution of ethic primary value that radical behaviourists should take as an assumption of their behaviours in any situation that face.

Through the narrative of the life stories, of semi-structured interviews, among other instruments of mediation, we tried to understand the sense of the speeches of 20 teachers or public and private universities of Fortaleza- Ceará -Brazil, dismissed of pedagogic formation, regarding the origin of their knowledge, ways of being and doing; their conception about how, when and with who they leaned how to teach. We still intend to construct to a theoretical picture on docent knowledge and an illustration of the multiple facets and origin of this. It was our intention also to establish a parallel between the imaginary of the citizens and the socialepistemological theory of Maurice Tardif. We tried to comprehend the sense of the speeches of our collaborators in an active and creative way, following the dialogical and polyphonically perspective of Bakhtin. We understand that the imaginary of these teachers is constituted by a myriad of beliefs, conceptions, values and feelings, instead mutable, dialectical and dynamic. In their set of ideas about knowledge of these teachers have diverse sources and a lot characteristics, witch was identified by the research in individual speeches of the professors of the university. We identified three characteristics of this knowledge: witch the firs is self-learning pratice, witch was based on a gift; or consider as art the knowledge pratice; or in a disciplinal identity witch was consider the knowledge of the subject as primordial. In the imaginary, the collaborators, they judge to have learnt to teach practicing; they also believe that their knowledge are built and rebuilt, , to cross by the voices of relatives, teachers and colleagues with whom they share their life experience through a dialogical relation. They consider also that the knowledge of the subject, as well as their ability of the professional practicing are essential for the exercise of the teaching activity, instead they agree that a knowledge isolated is not enough to forge a good teacher, because this one is made by the conjugation of diverse knowledge, acquired in and by the daily professional work of the teaching job, therefore, through their knowledge of experience, always mediated by the dialog with the diverse people with who they interact in their life and through a spontaneous communicative way, without which the education, the collective job, the cooperation are not possible. Knowing that or not, the teachers of graduation schools perpetuate medieval practices, by experimentation, without the certainty of their efficiency. The way for us, college teachers destitute of pedagogic formation, is to hold the hermeneutic dimension of pedagogy; it’s to develop a pedagogic rationality, a communicative and emancipator competence through a critic reflection of our daily professional work. Knowing that or not this professors had a pratice, an speech and a original pedagogy theory, witch was builded on real teach situation and we believe that should be consider on the educational research.

Alessandro Rovigatti do Prado 16 February 2016 (has links)

A translation of Shaykh Muhammad Alghazālī’s study on bid’ah (heretical innovation) with an introduction on the author and his thought

Farouk-Alli, Aslam 06 1900 (has links)
The boundaries of normative Islam are critically explored in this thesis, which presents a translation of the most important aspects of a modern study on bid‘ah (heretical innovation), by the late Egyptian Reformist Scholar, Shaykh Muhammad al-Ghazālī (1917 – 1996). The translator’s introduction contextualizes the life and work of the author and also briefly locates this particular study within the broader framework of classical and contemporary writings on the subject of bid‘ah. Only the book’s introduction, first three chapters (constituting the theoretical spine of the original work), and conclusion are translated. The first chapter is an introductory excursus into Islamic law, necessary to enable the reader to grasp the legal debate on bid‘ah. The second chapter casts a wider net, examining the influence of foreign elements upon Islamic thought, while the third chapter deals specifically with the topic of bid‘ah. The short conclusion reaffirms the importance of normative Islamic practice. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M.A. (Arabic)
