This dissertation considers nature imagery in selected South Afiican ceramics and printmaking. The main focus is on ecological issues in recent art productions. The text consists of five chapters. The first examines the ideologies of Fritjof Capra in relation to issues about deep ecology and ecofeminism; this chapter seeks to clarify the scope of the words 'land' and 'landscape' as used in a late 20th century context. The second chapter examines some historical works and ideas that have influenced perceptions of nature imagery in South Afiica. Chapters three, four and five constitute the main body of the thesis, and examine nature imagery in selected examples of contemporary printmaking and ceramics. Chapter three investigates selected landscape images ofceramist Esias Bosch and printmakers Gerda Scholtemeijer and Kim Berman. In chapter four the focus is on the flora as the point of reference. Prints of Gerhard Marx, Douglas Goode, EIsa Pooley and Karel Nel, who were all participants in the Art meets Science: Flowers as Images exhibition, will be examined. Important issues such as the separation ofbotanical and fine art, and art and science will be discussed with reference to their work. This will be followed by discussion of works of Susan Sellschop (a ceramic mural) and Bronwen Jane Heath (a wood engraving) in order to demonstrate the different intentions and outcomes ofthese to artists. Three dimensional works of the three ceramists, Lesley-Anne Hoets, Samantha Read-and Katherine Glenday are discussed in the final section of chapter four. Chapter five examines the interrelationship oflandscape and land. This chapter comprises two main sections. The first deals with aspects of landownership in South Africa reflected in recent ceramics and printmaking. Examples of the work of Marion Arnold and Ellalou O'Meara reinterpret images of early explorers and colonists situating them in a contemporary arena, demonstrating connections between past and present. Landownership is the overt subject in the Fee Halsted Berning, whose ceramic relief panel reflects a different perspective of landownership from the prints ofthe Schmidtsdrift artists. The second section surveys work of four artists whose images draw attention to ecological matters. Early modern representations of witchcraft have been the subject of considerable recent scholarship; however, three significant aspects of the corpus have not received sufficient attention and are treated independently here for the first time. This dissertation will examine how witchcraft imagery invited discourse concerning the reality of magic and witchcraft and suggested connections to contemporary issues through the themes of the witch’s violent autonomy, bestial passions, and unnatural interactions with the demonic and the dead. These three themes address specific features of the multifaceted identity of the witch and participate in a larger discussion that questioned the nature of humanity. Analysis of each issue reveals a complex, ambiguous, and often radically open treatment of the subject that necessitates a revision of how witchcraft imagery from this period is understood.
Each understudied aspect of witchcraft imagery is explored through a series of case studies that have not appeared together until now. Previously unexamined artworks with inventive content are introduced and canonical pictures are examined from new perspectives. These images were created in the principal artistic centers, the Italian city-states, the German provinces, and the Low Countries, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when the controversy over witchcraft was at its peak. Although they are few in number, these highly innovative images are the most effective and illuminating means by which to access these themes. These works of art provide valuable insights into important issues that troubled early modern society.
Chapter 1 reveals how witchcraft imagery produced in the Low Countries is concerned with the witch’s violent rejection of the social bonds and practices upon which the community depends for survival. Chapter 2 examines how the figure of the witch was used to explore concerns about the delineation and transgression of the human-animal boundary. Chapter 3 exposes an interest in the physical possibility of witchcraft; artists questioned the ability of witches and demons to manipulate the material world. Issues include the witches’ capacity to reanimate dead bodies and create monstrous creatures. Together these images demonstrate active and meaningful engagement with the theories, beliefs, and practices associated with witchcraft.

The aim of this work is to explore the printed Hawaii shirt through material investigations in search of new print meetings. A vital step for this investigation was to develop the classic Hawaii- prints and motives in mixed media. Followed by exploring alternative printing techniques such as transfer printing, laser cutting and knitting in different materials to reach new expressions yet keeping a clear reference to the Hawaii shirt. The intention of this work was to investigate how the Hawaii shirt with its classic print could interact with the mind and body of the wearer. Furthermore, to question the informal rules of wearing a Hawaii shirt with a starting point in Umberto Eco’s theories about epidemic self-awareness. The motive of this work is to critically look at the society today, with a focus on consumerism, foreign travel and tourism and the expression of it, with the Hawaii shirt as a symbol of these things. Based on the assumption of the Hawaii shirt being a tacky souvenir that tourists bring back home from their holidays. This work show new expressions of the printed Hawaii shirt through innovative print meetings. This work also proposes alternative ways of wearing a Hawaii Shirt.

The author of the diploma work Parish and dean library in Velké Meziříčí. A list of manuscripts and old prints aimed to organize a part of the book collection and to present one of the forgotten church libraries in Moravia. The introduction presents shortly individual parts of the work with the criticism of used sources and literature, then four chapters succeed and the conclusion that evaluates the defined targets. The first chapter tells the historical story of the parish of Velké Meziříčí from the beginnings to the present days in the context of history of the same domain. The second chapter deals briefly with the history of church libraries in Moravia focusing on the parish libraries. The history of book culture in the parish and history of the parish and dean library itself are the topics of the third chapter. In the last fourth chapter the list of manuscripts and old prints is analysed in terms of language, time, place, topic, edition, palaeography, art and provenance. The final conclusion is followed by the list of used abbreviations, the list of used sources and literature and the supplements that include not only tables, graphs and photographs but also an extensive list of manuscripts and old prints with the commentary itself.

Fusion of Stationary Monocular and Stereo Camera Technologies for Traffic Parameters EstimationAli, Syed Musharaf 07 March 2017 (has links)
Modern day intelligent transportation system (ITS) relies on reliable and accurate estimated traffic parameters. Travel speed, traffic flow, and traffic state classification are the main traffic parameters of interest. These parameters can be estimated through efficient vision-based algorithms and appropriate camera sensor technology.
With the advances in camera technologies and increasing computing power, use of monocular vision, stereo vision, and camera sensor fusion technologies have been an active research area in the field of ITS. In this thesis, we investigated stationary monocular and stereo camera technology for traffic parameters estimation. Stationary camera sensors provide large spatial-temporal information of the road section with relatively low installation costs.
Two novel scientific contributions for vehicle detection and recognition are proposed. The first one is the use stationary stereo camera technology, and the second contribution is the fusion of monocular and stereo camera technologies.
A vision-based ITS consists of several hardware and software components. The overall performance of such a system does not only depend on these single modules but also on their interaction. Therefore, a systematic approach considering all essential modules was chosen instead of focusing on one element of the complete system chain. This leads to detailed investigations of several core algorithms, e.g. background subtraction, histogram based fingerprints, and data fusion methods.
From experimental results on standard datasets, we concluded that proposed fusion-based approach, consisting of monocular and stereo camera technologies performs better than each particular technology for vehicle detection and vehicle recognition. Moreover, this research work has a potential to provide a low-cost vision-based solution for online traffic monitoring systems in urban and rural environments.

Automatiserad limning av kullager : Framtagning av station för automatiserad limning / Automated application of glue on bearingMentes, Markus, Wale, Walter January 2023 (has links)
Projektet gick ut på att utveckla ett antal koncept för att automatisera limningen av ett kullager som monteras i underdelen med hjälp av en kollaborativ robot. De ser detta som vägen framåt mot en mer effektiv produktion. Målet var att ta fram tre koncept för hur detta kan ske samtidigt som kraven upprätthålls. Projektet handlade endast om limningen av lagret och inte andra delar av sammanställningen av underdelen. Robotens gripdon som används vid sammanställningen fick dock inte modifieras på ett sätt som påverkar andra steg i processen. Underdelen är den komponent som fäster mätinstrumentet vid ett stativ. Den består av två huvuddelar som monteras vid varandra via ett lagerpar för att minimera oönskat spel. Utrymmet som finns tillgängligt begränsas huvudsakligen av robotens räckvidd och de andra stationerna i produktionslinan som roboten arbetar i. Tester av robotens förmåga att utföra de nödvändiga stegen genomfördes genom att stegvis testa dess egenskaper. Resultatet av dessa tester visade att roboten kunde utföra de nödvändiga stegen. De tre koncepten som togs fram byggde på varandras styrkor och svagheter med olika filosofier som grund. När dessa koncept var färdigställda utvärderades de och ställdes mot varandra i en beslutsmatris där det vinnande konceptet vidareutvecklades i CAD. Denna CAD-sammanställning omvandlades sedan med hjälp av 3D-utskrifter i PETG till en 1:1-skalig modell. Det koncept som valdes för vidareutveckling var det som bygger på att använda robotens rotationsförmåga och på så vis inte behöva några extra motorer. Resultatet blev då en station som uppfyller målen och går att använda för utveckling av produktionslinan. / The project aimed to develop several concepts for automating the bonding of a ball bearing that is mounted in the adapter housing with the help of a collaborative robot. They see this as the way forward to a more efficient production. The goal was to develop three concepts for how this can be done while maintaining the requirements. The project only dealt with the bonding of the ball bearing and not other parts of the assembly of the lower part. However, the robot's tongs used in the assembly could not be modified in a way that affects other steps in the process. The adapter housing is the component that attaches the measuring instrument to a tripod. It consists of two main parts that are mounted together through a pair of ball bearings to minimize unwanted play in the construction. The space available is mainly limited by the robot's reach and the other stations in the production line where the robot acts. Tests of the robot's ability to perform the necessary steps were carried out by systematically testing its features. The results of these tests showed that the robot could perform the necessary steps. Three concepts were developed that built on each other's strengths and weaknesses with different philosophies as a basis. When these concepts were completed, they were evaluated and compared in a decision matrix, where the winning concept was further developed in CAD. This CAD assembly was then converted using 3D printing in PETG to a 1:1 scale model. The concept chosen for further development was the one based on utilizing the robot's rotational capability, thus eliminating the need for any additional motors. The result was a station that meets the objectives and can be used for the development of the production line.
