HIV and AIDS in the workplace : the role of the employee assistant practitioners

The purpose of this study is to explore the EAP environment and provide a better understanding of the related roles of the Employee Assistant Practitioners/Professionals (EAPs) in respect of their treatment of various forms of illnesses in the workplace – particularly HIV and AIDS. The EAP role is not aligned to any individual profession, as it is designed to match employees’ holistic needs. It is in this context that the repertoire of EAP roles would include caring, psycho-social, therapeutic and technical skills. The EAP role is therefore endowed with the potential to meet a range of inter-departmental and multi-disciplinary needs – such as Nursing, Allied Health Professions, and Healthcare Sciences. A generic Assistant Practitioners Performance Management system (scorecard) had to be developed and agreed to with the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) Management in order to maintain consistency when developing APE programmes and roles. Notwithstanding the fact that the Employee Assistant Practitioners do also address the growing HIV/AIDS concerns in the workplace – including psycho-social problems of employees and their families – there is minimal acknowledgment of the EAPs’ roles, and little recognition of their welfare and well-being programmes. Drawing eclectically from various inter-related disciplinary terrains, the study centripetally explores the roles of EAPs as well as HIV/AIDS frameworks in the workplace. Quantitative and qualitative descriptive research methods were employed to assess challenges encountered by the City of Johannesburg (C.o.J) employees and their dependants. Questionnaires were used for the data collection of this study. The repertoire of participants in the study (n=55) comprised of doctors, social workers, nurses, HR officers, and other CoJ employees themselves. vi The questionnaire became the pivotal quantitative data analysis reference point ias it focused on numbers or quantities, and less on the qualitative analysis, which focused on differences in quality. The results of the study are based on numeric analysis and statistics to quantify the qualitative analysis. The prevalence of fewer participants was largely influenced by the depth of the data collection process, which did not allow for large numbers of research participants. The findings of the study revealed, amongst other factors, that there was an unsurpassed need to integrate different HIV/AIDS frameworks in order that the roles of EAPs becomes more effectively and efficiently defined and executed. The roles of EAPs were hitherto not well defined, resulting in duplication and confusion of service delivery to some employees utilising the EAP services. However, some of the EAP roles are highly appreciated and increasingly supported by managers and employees. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made for clarifying and extending the criticality of EAP roles and functions. / Health Studies / Ph. D. (Health Studies)

Skofwerknavorsing het gedurende die afgelope dekade internasionaal toegeneem. Hiermee gepaardgaande het verskeie intervensies ontstaan om die doeltreffendheid van skofwerkers en hulle gehalte van werklewe te bevorder. Deur gebruik te maak van 'n gekombineerde vraelys ("Standard Shiftwork Index") en werklike data ten opsigte van afwesigheid en prestasiebeoordelings, is 'n steekproef van 102 gevalle geanaliseer. 'n 90 persent betroubaarheidinterval is gebruik om waardes ten opsigte van elke veranderlike te bepaal. Daar is bevind dat werknemerbemagtiging weinig invloed het op skofwerkers se werkbywoning. Daar is ook gevind dat werknemerbemagtiging nie lei tot 'n meer positiewe persepsie, by toesighouers, van skofwerkwerkers se algemene werkprestasie nie. Daar is egter bevind dat skofwerkers se persepsies van hulle gehalte van werklewe, ten opsigte van werkdissatisfaksie, chroniese vermoeidheid en tevredenheid met sosiale omstandighede, wel positiefbelnvloed word deur werknemerbemagtiging. Aanbevelings is gemaak ten opsigte van die aanwending van werknemerbemagtiging, as intervensie in skofwerkomgewings, asook vir verdere skofwerknavorsing in Suid-Afrika. / The purpose of this research was to determine if significant differences exist between employee effectiveness and perceptions of quality of working life of empowered and non-empowered shiftworkers in the South-African petrochemical industry. By using the Standard Shiftwork Index and real absenteeism and appraisal data, a sample of 102 cases was analysed. A 90 percent confidence interval was used to determine t-values for variables. It was found that empowerment has little influence on the work attendance of shiftworkers and that empowerment does not lead to more positive perceptions of general work performance of shiftworkers, among their supervisors. It was, however, found that shiftworkers' perceptions of their quality of working life are improved by empowerment in respect of work dissatisfaction, chronic fatigue and satisfaction with social circumstances. Suggestions were made concerning the use of empowerment, as an intervention, in shiftwork environments and for future shiftwork research in South-Africa. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.Comm. The role of communication satisfaction in job satisfaction in the Department of Communications : an exploration

This researcher investigates the role of communication satisfaction in job satisfaction in the Department of Communications, a government policy-making institution that deals with post, telecommunications, and broadcasting services in South Africa. This study describes communication satisfaction as the overall degree of satisfaction an employee perceives in his total communication environment and job satisfaction as the degree of satisfaction the individual feels with his job. Focus groups are used to explore the role of communication satisfaction in job satisfaction in the Department of Communications because they are appropriate and suitable in capturing the discussions reflecting emotions, particularly uncovering individuals' feelings about their environment. The emphasis is on finding out how communication motivates and makes employees satisfied in their jobs. Qualitative content analysis, based on transcriptions from audiotapes, is used for interpretation and analysis of the data. Estresse e síndrome de burnout em professores do ensino superior: contexto de adoecimento e estratégias de enfrentamento / Stress and burnout syndrome in higher education teachers: context of illness and coping strategies

A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo geral identificar e analisar estratégias de enfrentamento do estresse e da síndrome de burnout utilizadas por professores do Campus Pato Branco da UTFPR. Os objetivos específicos foram: Identificar a ocorrência e os níveis de estresse e da síndrome de burnout em professores do Campus Pato Branco da UTFPR; identificar agentes estressores relatados pelos participantes da pesquisa e identificar estratégias de enfrentamento do estresse e da síndrome de burnout utilizadas pelos participantes da pesquisa. Os dados foram coletados mediante a utilização do Inventário de Sintomas de Stress para Adultos de Lipp (ISSL), do Malasch Burnout Inventory (MBI - ED), de um Questionário Estruturado e Entrevista. Participaram do estudo 69 professores sendo 58% do sexo masculino e 42% do sexo feminino. A idade variou entre 28 e 67 anos e a experiência docente entre 3 e 39 anos. Os resultados apontam a existência de algum grau de estresse em 43,48% da amostra, entre docentes de ambos os sexos. O sofrimento psicológico pelo estresse é igualmente distribuído entre homens e mulheres, porém, o sofrimento físico é muito mais evidenciado neles do que nelas. Também foram encontrados níveis preocupantes de burnout. Os resultados obtidos apontam que 26,09% da amostra não apresentaram alteração em qualquer das três dimensões avaliadas pelo MBI. Já dentre os demais, 37,68% apresentaram alteração em uma das três dimensões do burnout e 36,23% em duas ou nas três dimensões. Foram encontrados níveis alarmantes de exaustão emocional, situação apresentada por 47,82% da amostra, de despersonalização em 26,08% da amostra, e de reduzida realização pessoal no trabalho em 50,72% da amostra. Os três tipos de estratégias de enfrentamento mais utilizadas pelos participantes são suporte familiar, alimentação adequada e exercício físico regular, repouso e lazer. Conclui-se, portanto, que além dos casos já identificados com diagnóstico positivo para a síndrome de burnout, 13% da amostra, a grande maioria da população pesquisada encontra-se em processo de adoecimento. Por fim, considerando os altos níveis de estresse e de burnout encontrados, os resultados evidenciaram que somente estratégias individuais de enfrentamento não estão sendo suficientes para evitar os problemas na instituição pesquisada. / The present research aimed to identify and analyze strategies for coping with stress and burnout syndrome used by teachers at the Pato Branco Campus of UTFPR. The specific objectives were: To identify the occurrence and levels of stress and burnout syndrome in professors of the Pato Branco Campus of UTFPR; identify stressors reported by the research participants, and identify coping strategies for stress and burnout syndrome used by the research participants. Data were collected using the Lipp Adult Stress Symptom Inventory (ISSL), the Malasch Burnout Inventory (MBI - ED), a Structured Questionnaire and Interview. Sixty-one teachers participated in the study, 58% male and 42% female. The age ranged from 28 to 67 years and the teaching experience between 3 and 39 years. The results point to the existence of some degree of stress in 43.48% of the sample, between teachers of both sexes. Stress psychological distress is equally distributed between men and women, but physical suffering is much more evident in them than in them. Alarming levels of burnout were also found. The results obtained indicate that 26.09% of the sample did not present alteration in any of the three dimensions evaluated by MBI. Among the others, 37.68% presented alterations in one of the three dimensions of burnout and 36.23% in two or three dimensions. Alarming levels of emotional exhaustion were found in 47.82% of the sample, 26.08% in the sample, and 50.72% in the sample. The three types of coping strategies most used by participants are family support, adequate food and regular exercise, rest and leisure. It is concluded, therefore, that in addition to the cases already identified with a positive diagnosis for the burnout syndrome, 13% of the sample, the great majority of the researched population is in the process of becoming ill. Finally, considering the high levels of stress and burnout found, the results showed that only individual coping strategies are not enough to avoid the problems in the research institution.

As to music insertion we considered the theoretical-empirical perception about how music is inserted at work and its functions on such place. The context where the study was taken was the manufacturing area of a major textile company, located in Natal, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in which music is used during labor activities. The only study case was the research strategy adopted, with exploratory and descriptive purposes. The primary data were collected through the focus group technique, applied to the collaborator in the manufacturing sector. The semi-structured interview was done as a complementary tool, directed to the supervisor in that sector. Respecting the theoretical saturation criterion, we formed four focus groups, each one composed of eight members randomly selected, among the seventy-six collaborators in the sector. The data were analyzed qualitatively, through the content analysis technique, more specifically the category analysis. We identified twenty-eight QWL attributes. Six of them were found present in the four focus groups and in the interview. Among these ones, the attribute of Interpersonal Relationship at Work, contemplating the Psychological and Organizational dimensions, was the only one anticipated in four out of fifteen theoretical models here listed. The attribute Music at Work Environment could be inserted in the four QWL dimensions, highlighting the power and relevance of this attribute for the research participants. The way music has been inserted in the labor environment contributes to promoting well-being at work, which goes against theoretical conceptions, especially when it comes to musical genre. We identified nine functions of music at work, among which, Improving Work Conditions, Improving Interpersonal Relationship at Work and Favoring Motivation for Work had to be emphasized for being associated to three QWL attributes. In the total, we highlighted seven associations. The most affected QWL dimension through the insertion of music at work was the Psychological one, followed by the Organizational one. We conclude that music insertion provides biological, social and, above all, psychological and organizational well-being to the contributors, thus contributing to obtaining QWL at the labor environment researched. However, we should consider the context and proceed to periodical plans and adjustments in the way of music insertion so as to avoid health and well-being problems to those people at work / A presente Tese objetivou compreender como a inser??o de m?sica no ambiente laboral contribui para a obten??o da Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho - QVT, na perspectiva da percep??o do bem-estar biopsicossocial e organizacional. O contexto onde se realizou o estudo foi o setor de confec??o de uma ind?stria t?xtil de grande porte, localizada na cidade de Natal, estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil, em que se utilizava m?sica durante a atividade laboral. O estudo de caso ?nico foi a estrat?gia de pesquisa adotada, com finalidades explorat?ria e descritiva. Os dados prim?rios foram coletados atrav?s da t?cnica de grupo focal, adotada como instrumento principal de coleta de dados, aplicado aos colaboradores do setor de confec??o. A entrevista semiestruturada foi utilizada como instrumento complementar, direcionado ? supervisora daquele setor. Respeitando-se o crit?rio de satura??o te?rica, foram formados quatro grupos focais, cada um dos quais compostos por oito participantes, selecionados de forma aleat?ria, entre os setenta e seis colaboradores do setor. Os dados foram analisados qualitativamente, atrav?s da t?cnica de an?lise de conte?do, mais especificamente, a an?lise categorial. Identificaram-se vinte e oito atributos de QVT. Seis deles estavam presentes nos quatro grupos focais e na entrevista. Dentre esses, o atributo Relacionamento Interpessoal no Trabalho, contemplado nas dimens?es Psicol?gica e Organizacional, foi o ?nico previsto em quatro dos quinze modelos te?ricos aqui elencados. O atributo M?sica no Ambiente de Trabalho p?de ser inserido nas quatro dimens?es de QVT, evidenciando a for?a e a relev?ncia desse atributo para os participantes da pesquisa. A forma como a m?sica vem sendo inserida no ambiente laboral contribui para promover o bem-estar no trabalho, o que contraria concep??es te?ricas, sobretudo no que concerne ao g?nero musical. Foram identificadas nove fun??es da m?sica no trabalho, dentre as quais, Melhorar as Condi??es de Trabalho, Melhorar o Relacionamento Interpessoal no Trabalho e Favorecer a Motiva??o Para o Trabalho mereceram destaque por estarem associadas a tr?s atributos de QVT. Ao todo, foram evidenciadas sete associa??es. A dimens?o de QVT mais afetada pela inser??o de m?sica no trabalho foi a Psicol?gica, seguida da dimens?o Organizacional. Conclui-se que a inser??o musical proporciona bem-estar biol?gico, social, e, sobretudo, psicol?gico e organizacional aos colaboradores, contribuindo para a obten??o de QVT no ambiente laboral pesquisado. Ambiente, condições de trabalho e saúde docente em uma universidade pública brasileira / Environment, working conditions and faculty health in a Brazilian public university

Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar o ambiente, as condições de trabalho e a saúde dos docentes em uma universidade pública brasileira. Para tal finalidade, propôs-se: i) identificar na literatura as principais questões relacionadas ao ambiente, às condições de trabalho e à saúde na profissão docente; ii) examinar os métodos e instrumentos mais utilizados para aferir essas questões; iii) investigar as demandas ergonômicas e de bem-estar dos respondentes; iv) verificar as possíveis associações dos desconfortos nocivos frente às características pessoais, circunstâncias e local de trabalho. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com 141 profissionais de ensino lotados na instituição. Além dos elementos pré e pós-textuais tradicionais, o referencial teórico, assim como os resultados e sua discussão são apresentados através de dois artigos encadeados, o primeiro teórico-conceitual e o segundo aplicado. A revisão de literatura proporcionou a reunião e síntese, de maneira sistemática, de estudos que abordam os temas: ambiente, condições de trabalho e saúde docente. Esta etapa auxiliou na subvenção de material bibliográfico para o amadurecimento e concretização da pesquisa aplicada. No segundo artigo, investigaram-se as principais demandas ergonômicas e de saúde dos docentes, além de questões sociodemográficas, de ambiente, percepções e relacionamentos no trabalho. Para identificar as regiões corporais acometidas por dor, bem como sua intensidade, recorreu-se ao Diagrama de Áreas Dolorosas, onde as regiões do corpo apontadas com desconforto ou dor pela maioria dos professores foram: cervical, pescoço, regiões superior, central e inferior das costas, ombros direito e esquerdo e o joelho direito. Destaca-se ainda que 97,9% dos professores possuem alguma dor ou desconforto em pelo menos uma região do corpo. O sofrimento psíquico, indicado por meio do Questionário de Saúde Geral (QSG-12), resultou que 35,5% dos respondentes apresentam sofrimento psíquico. A Qualidade de Vida em Voz (QVV), avaliada pelo protocolo homônimo, apresentou escore médio alto, 95,4 (escala de 0 a 100), para os participantes. A partir de testes estatísticos, identificaram-se fatores associados significativamente com estas duas aferições. Para o QGS-12 as características associadas foram: gênero, presença de ruído e temperatura em sala, consideração das sugestões, relacionamento com os colegas e com as chefias, rouquidão ou fraqueza na voz após um dia de trabalho, intensidade do desconforto ou dor no ombro direito, pescoço, cervical, região inferior das costas e ombro esquerdo. Para o QVV as características associadas foram: idade, quantidade de filhos, tempo de instituição, limpeza das salas, relacionamento com os alunos, rouquidão ou fraqueza na voz após um dia de trabalho, sumiço ou mudança repentina no tom da voz, perda temporária da voz, piora na qualidade da voz ao longo dos anos, consulta com especialista por causa da voz, interferência da capacidade auditiva na atividade, intensidade do desconforto ou dor no ombro direito, pescoço e ombro esquerdo. Concluiu-se que este estudo dissertativo será útil para a reflexão e apontamento de caminhos que suscitem a promoção da qualidade de vida e saúde no trabalho, e que possam prover de subsídios os docentes, os gestores e os pensadores de políticas públicas de recursos humanos da instituição. / This study aimed to analyze the environment, working conditions and health of faculty in a Brazilian public university. For this purpose, it was proposed: i) identify in the literature the main issues related to the environment, working conditions and health in the teaching profession; (ii) examine the methods and instruments most used to assess these issues; iii) investigate the ergonomic and welfare demands of the respondents; iv) to verify the possible associations of harmful discomforts in relation to personal characteristics, circumstances and workplace. This is a cross-sectional study, with 141 teaching professionals in the institution. In addition to the traditional pre and post-textual elements, the theoretical framework, as well as the results and their discussion are presented through two linked articles, the first theoretical-conceptual and the second applied. The literature review provided the systematic gathering and synthesis of studies that address the themes: environment, working conditions and faculty health. This stage assisted in the subsidization of bibliographic material for the maturation and concretization of applied research. In the second article, we investigated the main ergonomic and health demands of teachers, as well as sociodemographic, environmental, perceptions and relationships at work. To identify the body regions affected by pain, as well as its intensity, we used the Diagram of Painful Areas, where the regions of the body pointed with discomfort or pain by the majority of teachers were: cervical, neck, upper regions, central and lower back, right and left shoulder and right knee. It is also noted that 97.9% of teachers have some pain or discomfort in at least one region of the body. The psychological distress, indicated by the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) resulted in 35.5% of respondents have psychological distress. The voice quality of life, estimated by the Voice-Related Quality of Life (VRQOL) protocol, showed high average score for the participants, 95.4 (scale of 0 to 100). From statistical tests, factors significantly associated with these two measurements were identified. For the GHQ-12 the associated characteristics were: gender, presence of noise and temperature in the room, consideration of suggestions, relationship with colleagues and bosses, hoarseness or weakness in the voice after a day of work, intensity of discomfort or pain in the right shoulder, neck, cervical, lower region of the back and left shoulder. For VRQOL, the associated characteristics were: age, number of children, length of institution, cleaning of rooms, relationship with students, hoarseness or weakness in the voice after a day's work, disappearance or sudden change in tone of voice, temporary loss of voice, worsening voice quality over the years, consultation with a specialist because of voice, interference of auditory capacity in the activity, intensity of discomfort or pain in the right shoulder, neck and left shoulder. It was concluded that this dissertation will be useful for the reflection and pointing of ways that promote the quality of life and health at work, and that can provide subsidies for teachers, managers and thinkers of public policies of human resources in the institution.

De nombreuses organisations contemporaines cherchent à développer l’engagement dans letravail de leurs employés en tant que moyen de générer un niveau élevé de performance. Surla base des recherches antérieures sur l’engagement au travail, la présente étude examine larelation entre l’engagement dans le travail d’un échantillon de salariés et ses antécédents etconséquences.Engager les employés peut permettre d’aboutir à la création d’un état d’esprit volontaristechez les employés, susceptible de développer leur motivation. Pour créer un tel état d’esprit,différents modèles sont présentés dans la thèse. Le modèle des demandes et ressources estensuite privilégié. Sur la base de ce modèle, il apparaît que les organisations peuvent agir surl’engagement dans le travail en diminuant les exigences du travail (par exemple, la surchargede travail, l’insécurité de l’emploi, etc.) et en augmentant les ressources d’emploi (parexemple, l’autonomie, le perfectionnement professionnel, etc.). Dans cette recherche, nousavons cherché à vérifier notre hypothèse d’une relation entre l’engagement dans le travail etcertains antécédents et conséquences. Nous concluons que, parmi les antécédents étudiés, lacroissance des ressources personnelles est la plus efficace au niveau de ses conséquences surl’engagement dans le travail et la qualité de vie au travail. / Many contemporary organizations are placing a greater emphasis on their employees’engagement at work as a means of generating higher levels of organization performance.Drawing on previous research on work engagement, the present study investigates therelationship between work engagement and its antecedents and consequences. Engaging theemployees will result in creating a willingness feeling in employees, leading to performing alltheir time and energy on their duties in such a way that they don’t realize the passing of time.To create such feelings within employees, different theories have been presented, amongwhich the job demand-resource is a major instance. Based on this model, organizations makework engagement through decreasing job demands (e.g. work overload, job insecurity, etc.)and increasing job resources (e.g. autonomy, professional development, etc.). In this research,we analyze our hypotheses that work engagement has specific antecedents and consequences.We conclude that, out of its antecedents, growth of personal resource has the most effect onwork engagement, as well as on the quality of work life.

Specifically, an investigation is made, based on the Policy and Quality Objectives adopted by construction companies who engage in the sector of vertical buildings, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, whatever may be the determining data for this enterprise and the types of objectives which include each of the sectors researched, namely Safety at Work and Quality of Life at Work. The methodology used, based on case studies, initially considered the analysis of the recognizably successful experience of one civil construction company which implemented actions for improving quality of life on its building sites. Thereafter, using the data collected in selected companies, pieces of information were obtained which pointed to features lacking in the objectives of the system of quality management which contemplated the object of this study. Therefore, as a practical suggestion arising from this study, ten actions have been proposed for improving the conditions of life and/or safety of workers on building-sites, set out step-by-step, in such a way as to guide and facilitate their implementation by building firms. / Esta dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a qualidade de vida e segurança do trabalho em canteiros de obra e objetiva analisar o comprometimento de empresas da construção civil que possuem um sistema de gestão da qualidade implantado e certificado de acordo com a NBR ISO 9001:2000, com a segurança e a qualidade de vida no trabalho dos seus funcionários em canteiros de obra. Investiga-se, especificamente, a partir da Política e dos Objetivos da Qualidade adotados por construtoras que atuam no setor de edificações verticais, na Região Metropolitana do Recife, quais os dados determinantes para esse empenho e os tipos de objetivos que contemplam cada um dos setores pesquisados, quais sejam, a Segurança do Trabalho e a Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho. A metodologia utilizada, baseada em estudos de casos, inicialmente contemplou a análise da experiência reconhecidamente bem sucedida, de uma empresa da construção civil que implantou ações de melhoria da qualidade de vida em seus canteiros de obra. Em seguida, a partir dos dados coletados em empresas selecionadas, obtiveram-se informações que apontaram para carências de objetivos do sistema de gestão da qualidade que contemplassem o objeto de estudo. Neste sentido, como sugestão prática deste trabalho, foram propostas dez ações de melhoria das condições de vida e/ou segurança dos trabalhadores em canteiros de obra, conduzidas passo a passo, de modo a direcionar e facilitar a sua implantação por empresas construtoras.

Il s’agit ici d’un niveau plus global, celui de la conciliation vie au travail – vie de citoyen.
