No. of bitstreams: 1 EduardoDiniz.pdf: 974608 bytes, checksum: 134920c92050dd5dee6af94ec24287a3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-02-22 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e ao Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico do Maranhão (FAPEMA) / In this work static atomistic simulations were performed to investigate two systems: rare-earth trifluorides, REF3, with tysonite structure (RE = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) and rare-earth mixed metallic oxides, RE(TiTa)O6, with RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er and Yb. In the rare-earth trifluorides was investigated the pressure induced structural phase transition identified by X-ray powder difraction in RE = La and Ce. The results shown that the crystalline structure is possibly tetragonal, in concordance with quantum mechanical calculations. For this, an interionic potential set that describes better the structural data of each compound and the physical observable was obtained. Besides, it was observed that critical pressure values were closed. The study involving the rare-earth mixed metallic oxides was focused in determining their bulk and structural properties. Thus, firstly a set of reliable interionic potentials was looked for to reproduce the crystalline structure and the physical observable, trough the investigation of three methodologies for obtaining interionic potentials, assuming the methodology that reproduces more reliable the dielectric constants. Furthermore, others bulk properties as lattice energy formation, elastic constants and bulk modulii were calculated. All then shown a rare-earth ionic radii dependence that revealed the morphotropic phase boundary between aeschynite and euxenite crystalline structures presented by these crystals.

Simon, Suzy Suely Pereira January 2006 (has links)
The present work presents the result of an inquiry on the formation of the urban contemporary landscape as a process of accumulation of different experiences of architectural materializations , each one conceived by the thought of a time, that for different reasons is seen and respected as urban permanences. This research sought to understand three paradigmatic moments which took place in Berlin in the twentieth century: 1) the modern architecture, studied from the event climax in the decade of 1950s: INTERBAU 1957; 2) the period after the modern movement, studied from IBA-Berlin 87, comprising events from the decade of 1980s; 3) after the fall of the Berlin Wall, from 1990 onwards, the strategy for reunification after 1989, when the rearticulation landscape of the two parts of the city previously divided presented itself plenty of subjective values . In this context, an understanding of the role of the Architecture subject in the conduction and in the physiognomical concretization of the urban landscape in the second half of the 20th century was sought.

Chicken genome variations and selection : from sequences to consequences

Khoo, Choon-Kiat January 2017 (has links)
Chicken is a major protein source and intensively selected for economically important traits by humans. As such, this generated a huge range of phenotypes that representing a diverse spectrum of genetic variation. Understanding the functional basis of the genetic variants that underlie these traits, however, remains a formidable endeavour particularly for complex traits. Nonetheless, molecular phenotyping of an organism from sequenced data is doable with the advances in bioinformatics analysis and unparalleled surveys of genome wide genetic variants. This provides the opportunity to gain insights into the genome architecture and assists in identifying chromosomal regions underlying selection through a “sequences to consequences” approach. Combining a whole genome re-sequencing (WGS) approach with the knowledge of selection history, this thesis aimed to study the chromosomal regions and genetic variants underlying traits of interest in various selected chicken populations. To achieve this, genetic (quantitative and population genetics), genomic and bioinformatics approaches were employed and integrated to investigate the genome wide selection signatures in a number of different lines of chicken selected for different complex traits. This includes analysing: (i) divergently selected broilers for fatness traits (Chapter 2), (ii) a closed population of layer chickens (Chapter 3), (iii) selection signatures unique to broiler or layer chickens (Chapter 4) and (iv) selection signatures in colony stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) associated with gene expression differences in broiler and layer populations (Chapter 5). Candidate genes and nucleotides underlying potential selection regions were identified, and attempts were made to further elucidate the potential interplay between genes and the biological pathways involved in regulating traits in these selected chicken lines. Incorporating integrative approaches, variants within selection signatures were annotated to provide further evidence of their functional consequences. Overall, non-coding regions were enriched in selection signatures implied that causative variants may have regulatory roles. Capitalising on the millions of genetic variants discovered from WGS, chromosomal regions subject to selection were detected using a number of population genetics statistics. In broiler chicken lines divergently selected for very low-density plasma lipoprotein (VLDL) (Chapter 2), incorporating signatures of selection helped to improve the resolution of previously mapped quantitative traits loci (QTL) intervals. This research demonstrated that the integration of the analysis of selection signatures with functional annotation of genetic variants enabled refinement and characterisation of the QTL for fatness traits. In a closed population of brown leghorn layers (Chapter 3), evidence of selection signatures was found through Tajima’s D analysis. The analysis unravelled selection signatures encoding genes involved in numerous pathways and genes having key roles such as in behaviour, including feather pecking. Combining population differentiation statistic (FST) and Tajima’s D, a number of regions subject to divergent selection between broilers and white egg layers were identified (Chapter 4). Selection signatures were found to harbour mutations involved in cellular and tissue development, including genes having important roles in growth, fatness, egg shell strength and muscle development. These regions and the overlapping genes thereby may be potentially contributing to the different phenotypic variations observed between broilers and layers. In Chapter 5, a revised gene model for colony stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) showing complex pattern of alternate transcripts was predicted from transcriptome analysis of RNA isolated from 21 different tissues. In parallel, selection signatures analysis with the FST statistic, identified selection signatures that differentiate broilers to white egg layers (3 regions) or brown egg layers to white egg layers (4 regions). All these selection signatures were located within non-coding regions, indicating potential divergent selection of CSF1 within regulatory regions. Overall, the results presented in this thesis using the “sequences to consequences” approach, link several genomic regions and genes to phenotypic variation in domesticated chicken lines. The work reported here serves as a foundation for further study to decipher the relationship between “genotype and phenotype” and its functional consequences due to selection.

Before we get the central problematization, which is given by the dialogue between the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Ranci?re. We begin, therefore, from an analysis about the constitution of a Deleuze?s philosophy, so that we can better understand and argue his proposal of cinema?s philosophy that begins from the influence of the Bergson?s ontology. In order to understand the positions adopted by Ranci?re and, above all, his criticism of Deleuze, we search at his studies of the image and how he understands the cinema from that context. We privilege some concepts and ideas that influenced each of the two authors, so that we could become possible a new way to read the philosophy of cinema, in which it was possible to provoke the thought through the confrontation of concepts by means of the analysis of films and, hence, to raise new hypotheses for possible solutions of the problems posed by both philosophers.

Allard, Caroline January 2019 (has links)

Miguel de Cervantes y Autran Dourado: diálogo crítico entre poéticas / Miguel de Cervantes and Autran Dourado: critical dialogue between poetics

Rodriguez, Marta Pérez y 04 March 2013 (has links)
This study is the result of a reflection and analysis about the production of the Brazilian writer Autran Dourado highlighting the dialogue that it establishes with the work of the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, searching not only for thematic but also for poetic correspondences between both writers. It starts with a brief historic and literary trajectory present in their works aiming at delineating a common characteristic shown by them, that of critic writers. This comparison leads to the study of Autran Dourado´s Cervantine library. On the other hand, a research on the criticism on Autran Dourado´s complete work was carried out, focusing mainly on the academic studies about his work taking into consideration his 40 year literary production. Regarding such data, the analysis of an intertextual dialogue established between the works by Dourado and Cervantes becomes fundamental, distinguishing the thematic coincidences and similar proceedings in the construction of their characters, as in the trilogy centered in the saga of Honório Cota´s family by Autran Dourado and Don Quijote de La Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes, as well as the poetic anxiety of both authors starting from a study about their re-writing processes.

Efficient social perception in adults : studies on visual perspective-taking and visual working memory

Wang, Jen Jessica January 2011 (has links)
Ten experiments examined the way that automatic processing of the visual perspectives and eye gaze of others affects adults‘ perception and encoding of the social world. I investigated the amount of flexibility that automatic visual perspective computation accommodates. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 demonstrate that automatic visual perspective-computation shows some flexibility for enumerating and representing perspective contents. Experiments 4 and 5 further indicate that automatic visual perspective-taking allows selection of relevant perspective information. I also examined whether observing others‘ eye gaze affects adults‘ visual working memory encoding. Experiments 6, 7, and 8 indicate that agents‘ object-oriented gaze does not lead to more efficient encoding of agent and object information. Experiments 9 and 10 demonstrate that observing others‘ participant-oriented gaze disrupts visual working memory encoding. I argue that although adults have minimal conscious control over the activation of visual perspective-computation and processing of participantoriented gaze, the efficient mindreading system shows some flexibility.

Quantitative analysis in energy loss and vertical mass transport of various channel restoration structures using physical based modeling

Snyder, Katie May 01 August 2016 (has links)
Physical based modeling was conducted to improve channel restoration efforts through direct comparison of submerged structures of various design and orientations. In-stream structure technologies studied are used to provide bank stabilization, flow control, scour and sediment control, as well as ecological enhancement through turbulent dispersion and vertical mass transport. Quantitative analysis evaluates flow effects induced by common channel restoration structures in their ability to provide mixing in our streams and rivers without significant impacts on flooding through excessive energy loss and backwater effect. Physical, fixed-bed flume experiments were performed under high-Reynolds number subcritical steady-state flow conditions. Theoretical energy loss relationships were developed, compared, and evaluated experimentally for stream barbs, spurs, submerged vanes, blocks and boulders. Extensive surface dye-trace experiments were performed to determine centerline mixing and vertical mass transport produced by stream barbs, vanes and boulders. The research presented in this thesis illustrates that the use of dispersion relationships to assess length of vertical mass transport based on the change in energy slope, and estimated shear velocity, of the channel does not properly correct for boundary layer formation and advection or angular motion produced by channel restoration structures. Submerged vanes were found to provide efficient vertical mixing with minimal energy loss or flood risk, as compared to stream barbs, spurs, blocks, and boulders. The deterioration of water quality and the need to provide bank stabilization with limited flood risk require updated NRCS and ASCE design standards and selection tools for vertical mass transport and energy loss relationships of channel restoration structures. The research conducted in these two studies have provided data for a select number of such structures.

The adolescent with cancer's school re-entry experience : exploration of predictors and successful outcomes

Brimeyer, Chasity 01 July 2012 (has links)
More adolescents are surviving cancer and being treated outside the hospital-setting, allowing them to return to typical activities of development like attending school. Effective preparation for school re-entry is an important aspect of easing the transition back-to-school following a cancer diagnosis. Previous research has used the terms school re-entry, school re-entry preparation, and school reintegration interchangeably. For the purposes of the current study, school re-entry refers to going back-to-school. School re-entry preparation or interventions refers to the preparatory process implemented for the initial return to school following a cancer diagnosis. Conversely, school reintegration refers to the ongoing or long-term adjustment of the child or adolescent with cancer to the school environment. Research in school re-entry preparation began in the late 1970s, but much is still not well understood about appropriate school re-entry preparation in terms of application, outcome, or the adolescent's needs. The adolescent with cancer's perspective has been grossly neglected in research. Furthermore, current research lacks an operational definition of "successful school re-entry" and knowledge of specific factors associated with positive school re-entry outcomes. Identifying variables that positively impact the school re-entry process is critical to improving and individualizing school re-entry interventions. The current study used an adaption of the Disability-Stress Coping Model (DSC; Wallander & Varni, 1998) to both define school re-entry success and identify potential predictors that may impact school re-entry success. In addition, to obtain a more comprehensive picture of re-entry success, adolescents with cancer rated the success of their back-to-school experiences. The current study asked 85 adolescents with cancer (ages 11 - 19 years) to complete a web-based survey asking about their re-entry experiences and daily functioning. Results provided tentative support for a discrepancy between professional and adolescent re-entry needs/goals. Findings suggest that a subset of adolescents with cancer may be at risk for poor school re-entry/reintegration outcomes, including females, being of lower SES, having certain types of cancer (brain tumors, leukemia), undergoing specific treatments (radiation, chemotherapy), being out of school for longer periods of time, having pre-morbid academic difficulties, and/or having poor social support. Adolescents who demonstrate these risk factors may warrant increased, specialized attention when preparing to return to school. In addition to systemic and within-person factors from the adapted DSC model, findings suggest that developmental characteristics of adolescence must be considered in planning re-entry intervention. Appropriate modifications to school re-entry preparation for adolescents may include utilizing electronic and social media, implementing peer mentors, focusing on reinforcing appropriate social circles, and emphasizing autonomy. More research is needed to understand how to best assist the adolescent with cancer in returning to school.
