Authentic Authority: The Heart of Effective Teaching

The purpose of this thesis paper is to explore the elements of effective teaching. The main research questions that are dealt with regard how teachers can establish themselves as authentic authorities in the classroom and what strategies are conducive to effective teaching. The thesis paper aims to identify specific strategies and techniques that can be employed to increase teachers’ authority and provide a learning environment conducive to cooperative, on-task learning.This investigation will be in the form of a case study of an eighth grade English teacher at a secondary school in southern Sweden. The case study consists of two parts: an in-class observation of six English lessons forms the basis for a follow-up semi-structured interview.This thesis highlights the importance of teachers’ ability to establish referent and expert authority in their teaching role.

This study attempts to answer three questions regarding how health warnings that adorn Swedish cigarette packages affects the consumer on a grammatical and a semiotic level. To investigate this, the health warnings has been analysed in order to identify the grammatical and semiotic components impact on the coniditons for the messages to influence the recipicent. By examining two different designs of health warnings from the tobacco directive from 2014 and 2016, and to take part in a focus groups opinions, this study revealed different factors that enable or limit the consumer to perceive and embrace that which is conveyed in these specific health warnings.

Referent introduction and maintenance - two aspects of informationstructure : A study of a Dutch L1 learner of Swedish

This paper presents an explorative ‘pilot’ study made of oral picture descriptions in the nativetongue as well as in the target language of an intermediate Dutch L1 learner of Swedish (L2).Three Swedish L1 native controls were also recorded describing the same pictures. Therecordings were transcribed, coded and quantitatively analysed for the following aspects ofinformation structure: 1) referent introduction and 2) referent maintenance per type, 3)constituents in the prefield (i.e. clause-initial position) and 4) occurrences ofspatial/existential constructions of referent introduction. The research questions were: DoDutch L1 and Swedish L1 differ in their patterns of information structure in the area ofreferent introduction and maintenance, concerning prefield constituents in picturedescriptions? Does the L2 learner adhere to the target language (Swedish) patterns, thepatterns of his mother tongue (Dutch) or does the interlanguage exhibit different patterns?Differences in frequency emerged, where the Dutch L1 data had substantially higher rates ofsubjects in the prefield than Swedish L1 and where the perspective taken for referentintroduction was largely existential. On the other hand, Swedish L1 showed a greatervariation in the prefield and a pattern of referent introduction that was both spatial andexistential. The learner followed the patterns of his native tongue, in his L2 Swedish, wherethe patterns differed from those of Swedish L1. Transfer was found to be a likely cause ofthis, even though other explanations are not excluded by the results. The strict dichotomy ofspatial/existential perspective of referent introduction proposed by e.g. Carroll et al. (2000)was found to exclude many cases of referent introduction. The main problem with the presentstudy was the small quantity of data, as well as the lack of comparable studies; it is thereforerecommended to repeat this study using a larger amount of data.

Para esta, a referenciação, não mais vista como uma relação de espelhamento entre linguagem e realidade, passa a ser considerada como um processo de construção referencial dada no interior do discurso e, portanto, sem relação especular com o objeto-de-mundo. Assim, para essa perspectiva teórica, o referente, também denominado de objeto-de-discurso, é construído sócio-culturalmente a partir das práticas sociais e remodelado, no interior do discurso, em função dos propósitos comunicativos dos parceiros da interlocução verbal. Com base nesse aparato teórico, esse trabalho buscou analisar os recursos lingüísticos empregados por Carlos Heitor Cony na construção de referentes em suas crônicas de temas políticos publicadas entre 2004 e 2005. A partir dos dados encontrados no corpus, esta dissertação demonstra que, além das estratégias de progressão referencial já previstas pela literatura da área, a predicação - tanto nominal quanto verbal - e o que foi denominado de "jogo de instauração de referentes" podem atuar, em conjunto com o contexto discursivo, para a construção referencial. Como objetivo mais específico, tal pesquisa voltou-se à construção referencial de Lula, com destaque para as transformações sofridas por esse referente no decorrer das crônicas selecionadas e não apenas em cada uma delas isoladamente. De acordo com os dados analisados, esse trabalho constatou uma mudança na construção do referente Lula, que, de início, se voltava a aspectos positivos do presidente, sendo esses, em alguns casos, mesclados a aspectos negativos. According to it, the referenciation is no longer seen as a relation of mirroring between language and reality, but it is considered as a process of referential construction that occurs in the discourse and, therefore, without a specular relation with the "object of world". Like this, to this theoretical perspective, the referent, also denominated "object of discourse", is constructed socio-culturally starting from the social practices and remolded, in the interior of the discourse, in the function of the verbal interlocutors' comunicative purposes. Grounded on this theoretical support, this work aimed to analyse the linguistic means used by Carlos Heitor Cony in the construction of the referents in his chronicles of political themes published between 2004 and 2005. With base on the data found in the corpus, this dissertation demonstrate that, besides the estrategies of referential progression already foreseen by the bibliography about referenciation, the predicate - both nominal and verbal - and what was denominated instauration of referents game are able to act, with the discoursive context, to promote the referential construction. As a more especific objective, this research turned to the referential construction of Lula, with emphasis on the transformations suffered by this referent in the course of the selected chronicles and not only in each one of them separately. Starting from the analysed data, this work verified a change in the referent Lula's construction, which, in the beggining, turned to the president's positive aspects, in some cases, mixed with the negative ones. Information structure and mood selection in Spanish complement clauses

The general goal of this dissertation is to highlight the role of discourse pragmatics in the explanation of the use of the indicative and subjunctive moods in Spanish sentential complements. This dissertation examines mood selection in Spanish complements in order to illustrate the shortcomings of the traditional semantic/syntactic approach (Terrell & Hooper (1974), Hooper (1975), P. Klein (1974), Fukushima (1978-79), Bell (1980), and Takagaki (1984)) and to provide within the Information Structure framework (Lambrecht 1994; 2001) a detailed analysis of mood selection in Spanish complement clauses. Considering some existing pragmatic approaches to Spanish mood selection (e.g., Lavandera 1983, Guitart 1991, Mejías-Bikandi 1994, 1998), they are found to be inadequate because they are based on decontextualized sentences. This dissertation considers the context where sentences take place and contributes to our understanding of mood selection in Spanish complements as a formal reflection of the pragmatic properties and relations of the discourse referents that are denoted by noun complements, considering pragmatic notions of presupposition and assertion of propositional referents, their activation, and the pragmatic relations of topic/focus of these referents in the utterances. The notion of pragmatic assertion used in this dissertation is based on the notion of speaker intent, and it is equated with the notion of inactive discourse referents, which are in turn linked to the use of indicative mood in complements of assertive matrices. The notion of pragmatic presupposition is equated with the notion of active referents in the discourse, which are in turn linked to the use of subjunctive mood in complements of doubt/negation and comment matrices. However, this thesis argues that not all uses of subjunctive are motivated by the active status of propositional referents. Volitional and possibility uses of subjunctive are analyzed, similarly to assertive matrices, as activating a discourse referent. Yet, contrary to assertive matrices, and following Fauconnier’s (1985) theory of mental spaces, the referent activated belongs to the domain that represents an individual’s view of reality. This account of mood distribution in complement clauses is eventually extended to adjectival and adverbial subordinates and provides an explanation of mood distribution in all subordinate contexts in Spanish. / text

En examinant les points communs par les outils structuraliste, stylistique, sémiotique et thématique, la présente étude a pour but de trouver les points communs entre les deux modèles romanesques chinois et français : Le Rêve dans le pavillon rouge de Cao Xueqin et A La Recherche du temps perdu de Marcel Proust. La narration, le système des personnages et la temporalité sont similaires dans ces deux œuvres. Dans la Première Partie, nous allons montrer que ces deux œuvres adoptent, en effet, une forme circulaire, se refermant sur elle-même, analogique à la forme de la métaphore mais qui s’étend jusqu’à tout le texte, que nous appelons « la métaphorisation ». La métaphorisation, sur ces trois aspects, est le point de départ d’une nouvelle esthétique, propre, mais commune, à ces deux œuvres. Dans la Deuxième Partie, nous allons montrer que la formation d’un monde romanesque auto-référentiel dans l’intérieur des deux œuvres est rendu possible grâce à la métaphorisation, et les trois catégories des signes romanesques - le Signifiant, le Signifié et le Référent – ont la possibilité de puiser leur source uniquement à l’intérieur du roman. Nous allons également montrer le fantastique de la narration des deux œuvres, sous l’apparence réaliste des deux récits de « Marcel » et de « Jia Jade magique ». La création de nouvelles perspectives esthétiques, l’interrogation sur l’essentiel de la littérature, par la découverte de la forme métaphorisée de ces deux œuvres, constituent une partie importante de la présente thèse. En mettant en convergence ces deux œuvres par leur similarité, nous souhaitons apporter des découvertes intéressantes d’un point de vue comparatiste. / By examining the commonalities by structural, stylistic and semiotic tools, and by themes, this study aims to find the commonalities between the two Chinese and French novels: Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin and Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust. Based on our analysis in Part I, a specific form on three aspects - the narration, the system of characters and the temporality - is found to be common in both works. It is of a circular shape, closing in on itself, analogue to a metaphor but extends to all the text, which we call "the metaphorization." The metaphorization on these three aspects will be the center of a new aesthetic, proper but common to both works. In Part II, we will show that metaphorzation makes possible the formation of a self-referential world in the interior of the two works, and the three categories of signs inside a fiction - the Signifier, the Signified and the Referent - will have the opportunity to draw their source only in the interior of the novel. We are going to investigate into the fantastic that lies under the appearance of realism in the narration of the two stories of “Marcel” and “Jia Jade magique.” The metaphorization is not only an important part of our theory, it helps to discuss on the very essence of the literature in this present study. By converging these two novels by their similarity, we wish to make interesting discoveries from a comparative point of view.
