Vendština: gramatický popis a sociolingvistická situace tzv. vendských dialektů romštiny / Vend Romani: Grammatical Description and Sociolinguistic Situation of the so-called Vend dialects of Romani

Bodnárová, Zuzana January 2015 (has links)
The thesis provides a detailed grammatical and lexical description of Vend Romani, an under- described dialect of Romani spoken in the Transdanubian region of Hungary, and describes its current sociolinguistic situation. The linguistic data are based on recordings of spontaneous narratives, semi-structured interviews, and linguistic elicitation by means of standardized dialectological questionnaires acquired during linguistic field research. The thesis is structured into six main chapters: The first chapter deals with the sources of data and methods. The second chapter examines the factors that influence the sociolinguistic vitality of the dialect. The following three chapters are devoted to the grammatical description. The sixth chapter analyses the layers of borrowings in Vend Romani. The thesis also includes the basic vocabulary of Vend Romani translated to English.

Využití romských písní v hodinách hudební výchovy / The Use of Gypsy Songs in Music Classes

Filipová, Eva January 2019 (has links)
Romani music and its incorporation into the school education is the theme of this thesis. The aim is to provide fundamental information about Romani culture and music and to inspire teachers to include multicultural and ethnic topics into their lessons. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part (first and second chapter) deals with Romani people and their value system, language and its pronunciation. It describes the main characteristics of traditional and contemporary Romani music, while a separate subchapter focuses on Czech songs about Romani people. The following practical part (third and fourth chapter) describes the use of Romani music for both, Romani and non-Romani, children. First, the projects Čhavorenge a Čhavorikano luma are presented, the aim of which is to remind Romani children of their traditional music and the values of their culture. The way of teaching Romani music at a selected elementary school with a large percentage of Romani students is also mentioned. The fourth chapter introduces the possibilities of using Romani music for non-Romani children. It includes songbooks, song collections and arrangements for children and student choirs. Finally, three thematic teaching blocks are presented, from which it is possible to draw inspiration in the lessons of Music...

Contact Effects in Swedish Romani Phonology

Lindbäck, Hannes January 2020 (has links)
This thesis examines possible contact effects in the segmental phonology in an idiolect of Swedish Romani. From data gathered from one speaker of Swedish Romani I describe the phonology on a segmental level and then compare this with the phonology of its progenitor, Proto-Northwestern Romani. The traces of interference could in almost every case be explained as features gained from contact with Swedish. When features were judged to have entered Swedish Romani from a different language, intense contact with Swedish could possible explain why these features have remained in Swedish Romani.

Revisiting New Babylon : the making and unmaking of a nomadic myth

McGowan, Jérémie Michael January 2011 (has links)
This thesis revisits Constant’s New Babylon (about 1956-1974). Turning to theories of primitivism and, in particular, Christopher L. Miller’s critical reading of ‘the nomad’ found in Gilles Deleuze’s and Félix Guattari’s A Thousand Plateaus (1980), I use previously published and unconsidered archival materials alike to demonstrate the importance of Romani to Constant’s original work and thinking on New Babylon. Positioning these materials against a selection of dominant claims, reference points and images now circulating in established New Babylon and Situationist International scholarship, I argue that Constant’s daily life and artistic practice, together with key moments in the development and public display of his project, are framed by references to, yearnings for and personal dealings with Romani, both real and imagined. Questioning contemporary theorisations of nomadism through a consideration of who travels and why, I advocate for a greater awareness of and sensitivity to the historical conditions that produce particular forms of movement. New Babylon and Romani are inextricably intertwined: to forget the one is to misunderstand, and misrepresent, the other.

Pirfält, Tim, Boukachabia, Sebastian January 2015 (has links)

__________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This Thesis is the first academic effort to confirm, by means of linguistic research, the genetic relationship between languages belonging to the same family (Calé sub-group) of Romani, the original language of Gipsies. This work shows the continuity between the European proto-romani and the calon dialect, offering data about the internal history of this dying language, which enables us to understand the language of the Mambaí Calon community as a “subspecies”, that is, a population of an ancestral species (the Romani) who migrated from India, in the first years of the last millennium and arrived in the Brazilian geographical area still during the colonial period of our history. Presenting caló data collected in Spain with calão data obtained from reference work existing in the Lisbon National Library, together with field work done with nowadays Portuguese and Brazilian Gipsies, I offer to the Community headed by Mr. Dálcio a first documentation about the calon and its cultural subsisting aspects. Finally, the structuring of the calon Vocabulary in semantic fields, which is the consequence of the first need to elaborate a dictionary, also enabled the understanding of the impact suffered by these Gipsies during their contact with the Brazilian society and the understanding of the internal dynamics of this dialect as it promotes its self-organization to face the new requirements of the modern world.
