A comparative study of Roy Campbell's translation of the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca

Lockett, Marcia Stephanie January 1994 (has links)
Roy Campbell (1901-1957), who ranks among South Africa's leading poets, was also a gifted and skilled translator. Shortly after the Second World War he was commissioned by the Spanish scholar Rafael Martinez Nadal to supply the English translations for a planned edition of the complete works of the Spanish poet and dramatist, Federico Garcia Lorca, to be published by Faber and Faber, London. However, most of these translations remained unpublished until 1985, when the poetry translations (but not the translations of the plays) were included in Volume II of a four-volume edition entitled Campbell: Collected Works, edited by Alexander, Chapman and Leveson, and published in South Africa. In 198617, Eisenberg published a collection of letters from the archives of the Spanish poet and publisher Guillermo de Torre in a Spanish journal, Ana/es de Literatura Espanola, Alicante, which revealed that the politically-motivated intervention in 1946 of Arturo and Ilsa Barea, Republican supporters who were living in exile in London, prevented the publication of Campbell's Lorca translations. These poetry translations are studied here and compared with the work of other translators of Lorca, ranging from Lloyd (1937) to Havard (1990), and including some Afrikaans versions by Uys Krige (1987). For the analysis an eclectic framework is used that incorporates ideas from work on the relevance theory of communication (Sperber and Wilson 1986) as applied to translation theory by Gutt (1990, 1991) and Bell (1991), among others, together with Eco's (1979, 1990) semiotic-interpretive approach. The analysis shows that although Campbell's translating is constrained by its purpose of forming part of a Lorca edition, his versions of Lorca' s poetry are nevertheless predominantly oriented towards the target-language reader. In striving to communicate Lorca's poetry to an English audience, Campbell demonstrates his skill and creativity at all levels of language. Campbell's translations that were published during his lifetime earned him a place among the best poetry translators of this century. The Lorca translations, posthumously added to the corpus of his published work, enhance an already established reputation as a fine translator of poetry. / Classics and Modern European Languages / D. Bewegen, Aufzeichnen, Aufheben, Ausstellen: Archivprozesse der Aufführungskünste: Ein Arbeitsbuch

Büscher, Barbara, Cramer, Franz Anton 11 February 2022 (has links)
This shift also concerns questions of access to histories of performance-based arts as well as archival practices both in artistic and curatorial contexts. This workbook presents results of the research project “Records and Representations. Media and constitutive systems of archiving performance-based arts” conducted between 2012 and 2017 in Leipzig and Berlin with funding by DFG (German Research Foundation).

Garneau, Émilie 24 April 2018 (has links)

We have different conditions and I have to prioritize along the whole of my situation" : An interview about the district nurse perceptions of the work

Barieva, Philippa January 2014 (has links)
Bakgrund: Allt fler svårt sjuka patienter får vård i hemmet. / Background: An increasing number of severe ill patients receive care at home. Area manager district nurse in municipal home care alone is responsible for both nursing and medical interventions regarding the patient. A high workload increases the risk of making mistakes when district nurse have the responsibility for many patients. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe district nurses' experiences of working in municipal home care with nursing responsibilities for patients in regular housing. Methods: Qualitative methods with inductive approach used in the study. Through the strategic selection 14 district nurses from four municipalities had been interviewed. Results: The results revealed three categories: "Job satisfaction", "Supporting Resources" and” Experiences of difficult situations". District nurses experience of job satisfaction could be related to patient contact, use of their skills, public trust, variation of work, being at work and cooperation with others in care. District nurses skills, relationship with the patient and family, team work and group work, collaboration with other health care units, management support, work environment and facilities and administrative work is supportive resource in the district nurse work. District nurses in the study had individually different workloads and prerequisites for supporting resource in their work because they experienced different amounts of job satisfaction and perceptions of difficult situations such as ethical dilemmas, unpredictability, inadequacy, frustration and irritation. Conclusion: Functional supportive resource in the district nurse work can increase district nurses experience of job satisfaction. Along with resources and continuous professional development are prerequisites for experiencing job satisfaction, which is needed to fulfill the district nurses obligation to provide good care to patients. Further research is needed in the area since the municipal home care is in constant development in all communities and it is unclear how best to pursue it.

The Symphony in 1933

MacGregor, Emily January 2016 (has links)
Begun in Berlin, completed in exile in Paris, and premiered on both sides of the Atlantic, Kurt Weill's Symphony No. 2 sets up the symphony circa 1933 as both resolutely international and messily interdisciplinary, and spotlights how fundamentally a transnational approach is needed in order more comprehensively to understand both the genre and the localised political and social issues shaping symphonic discourse at this time. Taking the issues raised by Weill's symphony as a starting point, and borrowing fine-grained, historically synchronic approaches from year studies, this thesis examines the symphonic genre in 1933 through four other case-study works composed or premiered in that year. I thus position the symphony as a site of cultural exchange between and within the major contexts traversed by Weill and his work: Berlin, Paris, and a messier U.S. East-Coast nexus that centres on New York and Boston, via Mexico City, looking in detail at Hans Pfitzner's Symphony in C-sharp minor, Roy Harris's Symphony 1933, Aaron Copland's Short Symphony, and Arthur Honegger's Mouvement Symphonique nr. 3. The Germanic genre has long been associated with nationalism, monumentality, and power display, wedded to Germanic Enlightenment philosophical discourses about universalised selfhood and its relationship to society. 1933, the year in which Hitler took power and the Great Depression reached its peak, was politically and economically fraught, concentrating social questions that intersect with symphonic issues about power, selfhood, space, and mass audiences. It is also a neglected year within symphonic surveys. The thesis combines archival work and hermeneutic perspectives to foreground those social and political discourses historically associated with the genre. I argue for the significance of their differing legacies in co-existent contexts, for the complicity of the genre in establishing and perpetuating political and colonial hegemonies, and for the urgency of rethinking the symphony as an international phenomenon.

Zvládnutí rolového konfliktu pacienta s využitím ošetřovatelského modelu C. Royové / Management of the patient´s role conflict exploiting C. Roy nursing care model

PLZENSKÁ, Dagmar January 2007 (has links)
Management of the Patient´s Role Conflict Exploiting C. Roy Nursing Care Model Any change in health state of a man, who represents a holistic unit, is a stresful situation, to which he/she has to respond to accommodation changes. An irreversible change becomes a stigma for an individual. It changes or affects his actual way of life and often leads to changes in value scale of personality and may end in a role conflict. A nurse´s role becomes irreplaceable because she is the person who gives direction to nursing care, works with instigations, support them or suppress them. Ideal care should complete an idea of individual attitude to a patient to support and make the adaptation easy to his full-value and satisfied life. My diploma work is intented on using the C. Roy Nursing Care Model, on an adequate adaptation achievement of a client, on prevention of a role conflict. In the theoretic part we write about personality problems interaction and problems of setting during the role implementation influenced by irreversible changes. We studied the C. Roy model and its importace when it is used in a prevention of a role conflict with clients with irreversible changes. In the practical part we made up nursing documentation according to the C. Roy and asked nurses´ opinions because they worked with the documentation. Next we concentrated on nursing diagnoses evaluation of patients with irreversible changes in adaptation systems: self {--} concept, self confidence, role playing and interdependence. Then we concentrated on improving the quality of an adaptation level and clients´ satisfaction. The goals of the work: 1. Using the C. Roy Nursing Care Model for prevention of a role conflict in clients with irreversible changes- in a primary, secondary and tertiary role sphere. 2. To evaluate client´s roles before his affection. 3. To find out client´s adaptation level. We conducted a quasiexperiment and interview in the Regional Hospital Příbram and the Hořovice Hospital. We asked 10 clients. The goals of our work were achieved. We hope that our work may help to increase quality of nursing care given to clients with irreversible changes.

Language and value : the place of evaluation in linguistic theory

Kilpert, Diana Mary January 2003 (has links)
It is a central claim of modern linguistic theory that linguists do not prescribe, but describe language as it is, without pronouncing on correctness or judging one variety better than another. This attempt to exclude evaluation is motivated by a desire to be ' politically correct', which hinders objective analysis of language, and by an ill-advised imitation of the natural sciences, which obstructs the discipline's progress towards becoming a science in its own right. It involves linguists, as users of a valued variety, in self-deception and disingenuousness, distances them from the concerns of the ordinary language user, and betrays a failure to understand the involvement of social values in language, the nature of language itself, and the limits of linguistic science. On a wider scale, linguistics reflects society's devaluing and mechanisation of language. Despite growing concern expressed in the literature, and the incoherence that becomes apparent when linguists attempt to address social problems using a theory that regards language as an autonomous object, newcomers to the discipline continue to be taught that anti-prescriptivism is the natural corollary of a scientific approach to language. This thesis suggests that the way out of these difficulties is to rethink the meaning of ' theory' in linguistics. If we take the reflexivity of language seriously, building on M.A.K. Halliday's notion of 'linguistics as metaphor', we are reminded that a linguistic theory is made of language. Metalanguage must use the experiential and interpersonal meaning-making resources of everyday language. It follows that a linguistic theory cannot escape being evaluative, because evaluation is an inherent part of interpersonal meaning. If we fail to notice our own metalinguistic evaluation, this is because language disguises its evaluative meanings, or perhaps we are just not used to thinking of them as part of the grammar. To achieve clarity about the involvement of value in language, we need to turn our metalanguage back on itself - 'using the grammar to think with about the grammar' . Some ways of doing this are demonstrated here, turning the resources of systemic functional linguistics on linguists' own language. The circularity of this process should be seen not as a drawback but as a salutary reminder that linguistics is an interpretive rather than a discovery process. This knowledge should help us revalue language and make a place for evaluation in linguistic theory, paving the way for a socially responsible and productive linguistics.

Možnosti uplatnění modelu Royové a Neumanové v klinické praxi u generace 50+ / The possibilities of application of the Roy and Neuman model in clinical practice in the 50+ generation.

HEJNOVÁ, Iveta January 2018 (has links)
The 50+ generation has become an age group that is aging according to the statistical data and the number of individuals in this age category is rising. The aging process is accompanied by numerous physical, mental and social changes. As a consequence of these processes new and modified needs occur in these individuals, to which the provided care has to be adapted. We have linked this issue with conceptual models in nursing. This is because a conceptual model will help us integrate patient information into coherent and comprehensible blocks. An important goal of conceptual models is to simplify the work of nurses, who can see a patient as a whole thanks to them. We chose two models in relation to this issue, namely Calista Roy's model and Betty Neuman's model. We chose two research goals on the basis of the topic of the thesis. The first one was to map the knowledge of selected conceptual models among nurses. And the second goal was to find out the specifics of the nursing care in the 50+ group with the application of selected conceptual models from the point of view of nurses. We applied both, qualitative and quantitative methods to the research. Within the quantitative research we used a non-standardized questionnaire. In the qualitative part we applied the focus group method. Three hypotheses and one research question were set in relation to the research. We are able to confirm two of the three hypotheses. The statistical results have shown that the knowledge of the open-systems model and the adaptation model corresponds with the education of the respondents. Respondents with tertiary education show better knowledge of these models. On the other hand, no relation in taking the specifics in the satisfaction of the needs into account in the provision of nursing care in the 50+ generation was confirmed. A procedure for collection of the nursing anamnesis in the 50+ generation was created on the basis of the research. On the basis of this procedure we can enable healthcare staff to classify the patient information into logical systems and therefore to obtain a quality and comprehensive view of a patient. After the completion of the qualitative research we evaluated the proposals of our respondents for the theoretical as well as the practical part of the anamnesis collection. These respondents showed knowledge of the models. They most often criticized bad intelligibility or even redundancy of a question. Among benefits they named simplicity, reasonability and quality evaluation of the nursing care.
