Gospel According to Bristol: The Life, Music, and Ministry of Ernest Phipps.Story, Brandon H. 03 May 2003 (has links) (PDF)
"Gospel According To Bristol: The Life, Ministry, and Ministry of Ernest Phipps" is the first biographical and critical writing on the Kentucky Holiness preacher and Bristol Sessions recording artist. With information gathered from interviews with his surviving family members, court documents, and public records, this thesis paints the most complete picture of the life of Ernest Phipps (1900-1963) possible. Phipps is known for the company he keeps in the line-up of mountain musicians, including Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, that came to Bristol, Tennessee to record for Ralph Peer in 1927, but Phipps's music is discussed here on its own merit as a forerunner of modern Southern Gospel music. This thesis also argues that a 1930 Vocalion record by the Kentucky Holiness Singers is the last record Ernest Phipps made.

Agile Development in a Lonely Environment : How to Develop Software Using Agile Techniques Within Small-Scale Projects / Agil utveckling i en ensam miljöLindblom, Mathias January 2015 (has links)
Most Agile Software Development methodologies are aimed towards large companies and large-scale projects. The purpose of this report was to identify, and potentially modify, Agile Development methodologies and strategies suitable for small-scale projects. Initially a comprehensive study was conducted on a few selected agile methodologies in order to find the most suitable one to be used for a loosely defined small-scale project. The result of the study led to the methodology Kanban being used experimentally on that project. The report goes through how Kanban was utilized and modified to better suit the project as well as bring forward interesting details regarding the outcome of the actual project. The produced methodology, with Kanban at its core, can especially be of use for small IT companies looking for an agile methodology fitting their project(s). It could also be used to further develop alternative variants of the agile methodology Kanban with focus on small-scale projects.

What Do You Mean, "Practice"? Theorizing the Writing-Music ConnectionCompton, Callie Elise 01 April 2016 (has links)
Researchers in the field of composition studies have frequently made allusions to musicians when they’ve discussed the role of practice in gaining skill. In doing so, however, they’ve risked making speculative rather than testable claims and separating composition studies from recent insights on practice from other disciplines such as education and music psychology. These fields, I argue, offer testable frameworks with which composition instructors and scholars can teach and study writing practice. Such frameworks are necessary because composition researchers need to supplement qualitative studies of writers and writing with quantitative data to generate replicable tests of teaching methods that may benefit practicing writers.
This thesis draws on prior research in composition studies to illustrate the context of its central argument. It then breaks down some of the key assertions about practice that support this context before introducing frameworks from other disciplines that will allow composition researchers to replicate studies of effective writing practice instruction in the first-year college writing classroom. These frameworks or models of practice instruction include self-regulated strategy development and practice sessions conceived as stages of error and mistake management. Supplementing these models are descriptions of a few key activities built on these frameworks for students to practice writing in and outside the classroom.
Students need more than instruction in crafting better writing products to become more effective revisers and more expert writers. They also need explicit instruction that teaches them how to engage effectively in repeated, structured practice that imparts the tools they learn to solve writing problems with staying power and flexibility. This instruction is about more than handy tips or exercises; it’s about changing students’ and teachers’ assumptions about writing’s purpose outside the classroom.

Easing software development for pervasive computing environmentsStovall, Andrew Erich 03 June 2010 (has links)
In recent years pervasive computing has enjoyed an amazing growth in both research and commercial fields. Not only have the number of available techniques and tools expanded, but the number of actual deployments has been underwhelming. With this growth however, we are also experiencing a divergence of software interfaces, languages, and techniques. This leads to an understandably confusing landscape which needlessly burdens the development of applications. It is our sincere hope that through the use of specialized interfaces, languages, and tools, we can make pervasive computing environments more approachable and efficient to software developers and thereby increase the utility and value of pervasive computing applications. In this dissertation, we present a new method for creating and managing the long-term conversations between peers in pervasive computing environments. The Application Sessions Model formally describes these conversations and specifies techniques for managing them over their lifetimes. In addition to these descriptions, this dissertation presents a prototype implementation of the model and results from its use for realistic scenarios. To address the Application Sessions Model's unique needs for resource discovery in pervasive computing environments, we also present the Evolving Tuples Model. This model is also formally defined in this dissertation and practical examples are used to clarify its features. A prototype for both sensor hardware and software simulation of this model is described along with results characterizing the behavior of the model. The models, prototypes, and evaluations of both models presented here form the basis of a new and interesting line of research into support structures for pervasive computing application development. / text

Blusgrunder och passform / Achieving good fit in upper garmentsEriksson, Sofia January 2013 (has links)
Body image is strongly linked to the fit of clothing. Clothing can enhance the areas of our body that we are contempt with as well as disguise the ones we are not so satisfied with. The hardest, but also the most important challenge for a clothing company, is to create clothes that really fit their customers. The purpose of this study is to investigate how good fit is created in upper garments. The study is carried out as an assignment for a clothing company. Fit is accomplished by five factors; grain, set, line, ease and balance. To achieve a good fit, most companies in the clothing industry are working with basic patterns. Evaluation of fit is carried out through the whole product development phase with the help of fitting session and measuring of the garments. The researcher has a key role in this survey and will be directly involved in the process to ensure constant progress. Initially, three basic patterns for blouses will be constructed. Then a blouse with balance issue will be analyzed and adjusted. This adjustment will be documented as general description for altering upper garments with balance issues. The main focus of this study is to achieve as good basic patterns as possible. Along with fit, balance is also an important subject in the survey. Adjusting the balance in a garment can be accomplished by raising highest point of shoulder. I have mainly used literature that I am familiar with to be able to focus more on accomplishing my assignment. All steps are fulfilled which means that actions taken throughout the study have been accurate. It would be interesting to further explore fitting problems regarding balance. The use of darts is another way to enhance balance. It would therefore be of most interest to compare this to raising highest point of shoulder and especially look at differences in these two methods. / Program: Designteknikerutbildningen

The C-CAST project (Context Casting) was established to converged network architectures to support context-sensitive sessions with quality of service (QoS - Quality of Service) in a manner to guarantee to multiple users simultaneously, regardless of their wireless technologies. The C-CAST control mechanism of the Legacy introduces issues of performance degradation, once the signaling approach adopted is directed per-flow, which means that the signaling load increases exponentially with the number of admissions flow. This work proposes the Advanced of C-CAST, which reconstruct the C-CAST legacy system by the extent of innovative mechanisms that integrate dynamic control of provisioned bandwidth by the service classes and allocation overlay trees. Through this strategy, it seeks to reduce rates of control signaling and allocating resources throughout the system. The C-CAST Advanced evaluation is conducted through simulation, demonstrating its benefits in relation to C-CAST Legacy, by significantly optimization the performance levels of the entire network system while keep the network users with the best quality perception.

The relationship between self-rated health, motivation and physical activity in physically active persons : - A questionnaire studyHulander, Anna January 2011 (has links)
Physical activity has a positive effect on self-rated health, where motivation level may be important to physical activity. The purpose of this paper is to study how physically active people rate their health. Further investigated the relationship between the assessed health and motivation, and assessed health and number of training sessions. In addition, examined the relationship between the assessed health and barriers to exercise and feel before, during and after workouts. A survey was carried out at a gym in western Sweden and a total of 244 physical active individuals answered the questionnaire. Data were analyzed statistically using the computer program SPSS. The results of this study showed that all of the participants who belonged to the group “Over four times per week” expressed a self-rated health at the level of “Good”, “Very good” or “Excellent”. The factor “Number of training sessions” was positive related self-rated health. Study participants with “Poor self-rated health” agreed in a greater extent to the allegations contained in the survey which focused on “Barriers to exercise” compared to those who had a “Better self-rated health”. Further research should examine what barriers exist for those individuals who are physically inactive. Further research should also study why some people are affected by some motivators and why some people are not affected by them at all. By inspiring and motivating physical inactive persons with satisfactory health promotion interventions can improve health status and long- term health of the country increase.

Previous issue date: 2006 / This work approaches a study of “largeness length” in a real environment of a classroom. According to my researches, authors such as Miguel and Miorim (1986), Duarte (2002), Lima e Bellemain (2002) verify some postures from the school community, which seriously compromise the Geometry teaching, especially in the study field of geometry largeness. Among these postures, I can cite the emphasis given to the contents directed toward to Arithmetic, such as basic Math operations and fractions, while some Geometry topics are superficially approached. From this evidence, I applied and elaborated didactic sessions which the central objective consisted of investigating the use of measurement instruments as a support for the learning of “largeness length”. The theoretical references that give direction to the cognitive aspect are tied with the Piaget’s assimilation and accommodation processes (1982), in the social interaction process of Vygotsky (1994) and also tied with some Math education elements. This research is of qualitative nature, and in its approach of study of case (LÜDKE & ANDRÉ, 1986) it had a pedagogical practice, through didactic intervention sessions with some students, ages from 11 to 15, in a public school of Fortaleza´s city. As a result, it was confirmed that the work using measurement instruments with students has showed itself as a very efficient resource for the knowledge growth of the considered subject. I hope the evidence of this fact, helps in the destruction of a bad habit created by the school system regarding the approach given to the Math study field “Geometry largeness”, and not to make students use the adopted textbook as the only didactic resource anymore. Key-Words: largeness length, didactic sessions, instruments of measurement.

The Impact of Visual Properties on Player Habits and Game SessionsFrandsen, Filip January 2017 (has links)
This paper aims to provide a foundation in regard to information and cause correlation for future research about player retention and game session times based on visual properties. (such as colour values) This study can later be applied within software development. An online quantitative survey about play sessions and player habits is conducted and the conduct of this research is aimed at helping art directors make conscious and deliberate choices about the art styles for products where the visuals may impact player retention and game sessions. By knowing how visual elements such as colour values, shapes and contrast impact game play intensity and player engagement, and ultimately the end time spent during play sessions, art directors can make informed decisions to help impact player behaviours and habits. The paper includes subjects such as colour effects on humans (mental and physical), how human eye sight functions and how this should affect designs, effective use of visuals, eye fatigue, and visual communication. This study of visual properties and play sessions concludes that visuals have a definitive impact on how the game is perceived and processed by the player, leading to situations where the same mechanics can be much more intensive if presented using specific forms of visuals.

Using Web Conferencing Technology to Foster Inclusive Course Experiences for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing StudentsWeeden, Elissa 01 January 2018 (has links)
A mainstream course has several components that deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students must reconcile. In class, components can include the instructor, projection display, whiteboard, interpreting, and real-time captioning. Outside the classroom, components can include materials from the instructor, notes generated by a note-taker, and a lecture transcript generated via real-time captioning. Web conferencing software can be harnessed to create inclusive experiences for DHH students. Such software can place all components of a class session on a single screen to create a composite screen solution that can be viewed by students in real-time and recorded for later, self-paced review. A composite screen solution may increase performance and comprehension of DHH students in mainstream courses, along with their hearing counterparts. This mixed-methods study focused on the implementation of web conferencing software in a mainstream, college course to explore utilization of a composite screen solution by students inside the classroom. Quantitative data were collected and analyzed to determine impact on student performance. Qualitative data were also collected and analyzed to investigate participant perceptions about the intervention. There was no significant impact on student performance found based on student self-selected usage of the composite screen solution throughout the term. Hearing students utilized the composite screen solution significantly more than DHH students to compensate for obstructed views due to the design of a classroom and to make follow-along demonstrations easier. Alternatively, DHH students had unobstructed views with the projection screen and ASL interpreter in their field of vision. Overall, the live stream of the composite screen solution was not widely utilized by the intended target audience, DHH students, as anticipated. Instead, the results illustrate the importance of design and how a solution has the potential to help an unintended audience with unanticipated issues. The generalizability of the results, as they pertain to DHH students, are limited given the number of DHH participants.
