Effective Vulnerability Management for Small Scale Organisations in Ghana

Lartey, Jerry January 2019 (has links)
Most Small and Medium scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana are notparticularly anxious about the consequences of inadequacy or lack of anyform of vulnerability management operation in their normal businesspractices. This case study research explores how a local Internet ServiceProvider (ISP) in Ghana and its local client-base can manage vulnerabilitieswith a targeted patch management practise integrated into their operations. To answer the research question “How can a SME local Internet ServiceProvider (ISP) in Accra, Ghana, assist their local customer base to integrateeffective cybersecurity vulnerability management into their operations?“,This case study comprised the Subject Matter Expert of one local ISP as well as4 other technical Subject Matter Experts of the ISP’s clients about their patchmanagement operations. This case study research revealed that most SMEs donot consider vulnerability management as a key concern in the operation oftheir organisation and therefore, proposes a way to highlight the importanceof vulnerability management whiles doing so at a cost-effective manner. Theimplications of targeted cybersecurity patch management for the local ISP andtheir client-base is also addressed by this thesis research.

The Application and Implementation of Integrative Sustainability within Swedish SMEs - a Practical Perspective

Cojocea, Maximilian, Lundin, Andreas January 2019 (has links)
In light of a stronger recognition of the need for sustainable business practices as “business as usual” no longer presents itself as a viable option, this study aims to cast light on the current work of Swedish SMEs with integrative sustainability. Within the academic field of sustainability in business, the latest years have seen the emergence of multiple frameworks that promote a holistic sustainability approach to conducting business. The single firm becomes a connecting member of an extensive stakeholder network and by operating in an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable manner, the business seeks to create value for a variety of stakeholder groups, rather than focusing on monetary objectives set by shareholders. These new integrative frameworks shift the understanding of a firm from a profit-maximiser to that of a value-creator that acts sustainably to cater to the needs of all its stakeholders. However, as the models have only recently featured across academia, their real-life applicability and viability are contested, and in some ways, remains under-researched, particularly in the context of SMEs. With Sweden as a leading example in sustainability implementation, this study attempts to provide insight into how SMEs work with the elements of these frameworks and which opportunities and challenges they encounter during implementation. Through conducting detailed, qualitative and personal semi-structured interviews with the CEOs of six sustainability-minded Swedish SMEs of different industrial backgrounds, this research gauges the current organisational efforts being made in terms of sustainability and relates them to the integrative value-creating frameworks to identify congruences, divergences and room for improvement in line with latest theories. The main conclusions drawn as part of this process include the continued, at least partial, unfamiliarity of businesses with the frameworks, despite a large degree of compatibility of current practical efforts and existing academic theory. Value creation is moving closer to being included in the core of the business model, yet while absolute profit maximisation receives less attention, hesitation towards implementing sustainability more integratively is driven by concerns of losing grounds for profitability. The establishment of clusters and strong relationships leading to mutual synergies is found as a potential way to provide firms with the structural support to shift fully towards value-creation as envisioned by the investigated frameworks.

Fatores limitantes em implementações de sistemas de custos em empresas de porte médio: um estudo de caso / Limiting factors in cost systems implementation in medium size enterprises: a case study

Suzuki, Roberto 16 October 2008 (has links)
In the current companies competitive environment, it is necessary that they use tools to keep their continuity. The Strategic Cost Management is one of these devices and, therefore, a cost system is necessary to guide the managers decision of an organization, which starts to demand faster more elaborated information. These systems implementation, which are more and more complex, are usual in big companies and, also considering its importance, it is understandable the motive of why it has been studied along the time. With the changes from technology evolution, the lower costs, and the higher competitiveness, the small and medium companies also seemed the necessity of having a cost system to support their decision. But these companies characteristics are different of the others, supposing that their needs of information, as their system implementation difficulties are also different. This studys main objective is to identify the difficulties of cost system implementation in one medium size company through a case study. As secondary objectives are: the categorization of the material found in the bibliographical revision in groups; verify if the difficulties founded in the case study are similar with the literature. First, the founded difficulties by the many authors were separated between difficulties and critical factors for the implementation of systems. They were after categorized in behavior, management and insufficiency of resources, and the last two were reclassified in other subgroups. The analyzed company is a medium size industry in the branch of plastic packings. The study shows that the mainly difficulties of the company were related with lack of training, language limitations and accounting standards, once the implanted model was ordered by the headquarter located abroad. Beyond these, the most of difficulties in the literature were also identified by the company in its implementation, in different levels. Considering the used categories, most of them are related with the management difficulties group and with the insufficiency of resources group. The solutions utilized by the company hadnt a specific project for its realization, been applied in agreement with the possibility that the context allowed in that time.

Distâncias de viagens intrazonais: abordagem para estimativa e aplicação a um estudo de caso / Intrazonal trip distances: an estimation approach and application to a case study

Plaza, Conrado Vidotte 26 March 2014 (has links)
This study aimed at the development of procedures for estimating intrazonal trip distances based on data of origin-destination (O/D) surveys. The analysis conducted in the application presented was based on an O/D survey conducted in the city of São Carlos, Brazil. The urban area was subdivided several times to produce 471 traffic analysis zones (TAZ) for analysis. Geometrical characteristics of the zones that can influence the distances of intrazonal trips were then identified. Next, numerical indicators of the selected geometrical patterns were compared with the average values of intrazonal trip distances in order to look for evidences of correlation between these variables. Two analytical approaches were explored: i) continuous and ii) discontinuous. In the first case, all trips were consideredas a single dataset, whereas in the second case the dataset was split in two subsets with homogeneous characteristics. The datasets with higher correlation were used to build global and stratified models for estimating intrazonal trip distances. In the global models, walking, cycling, and auto trips were all considered as part of a common dataset. In the stratified models, the three transport modes were separately taken into account. Additional models, which were meant to estimate trips per mode based on global values of intrazonal trip distances, were also developed. The values obtained with these models were then compared with the estimations of other models found in the literature. The discontinuous models calibrated in this study clearly outperformed the traditional models. This may be an indication that they can be used to replace the traditional models for estimating average intrazonal trip distances, at least in the case of Brazilian medium-sized cities.

Dinâmicas econômicas e transformações espaciais: a metrópole de Belém e as cidades médias da Amazônia Oriental - Marabá (PA) e Macapá (AC) / Economical dynamics and spatial transformations: the Belem metropolis and the medium sized cities of oriental Amazon - Maraba (PA) and Macapa (AP).

Amaral, Márcio Douglas Brito 21 March 2011 (has links)
This research has as central goal to contribute to the knowledge of the relation between metropolis and medium sized city, considering the analysis of the recent changes in the relation stablished between the metropolitan Belem and the medium sized cities of oriental Amazon Maraba (southeast of Para) and Macapa (capital of Amapa State). Different authors and institutions have dedicated in the last years to the understanding of this modification in the relation between Belem and the cities of the Amazonian region. The main hypothesis which they defend is that Belem has lost regional importance and, in some cases, its role of metropolis is questioned or by the increasing of regional metropolises, such as Manaus and São Luis, or by the major presence of extra regional metropolises, such as Goiania, Brasilia and São Paulo, in spaces that were commanded hegemoniacally by Belem. In this thesis it is defended which the basis of this hypothesis of these authors and institutions and of their argumentative scheme is of pyramidal basis and it is grounded in a metric vision of the territories. It is argumented which there was a change of the relation stablished between the metropolitan Belem and the medium sized cities of oriental Amazon, mainly because of the diffuse form with the public and private investments occurred in the region, promoting the passage of the simple urbanization of the population to the urbanization of the territory, although it is believed that this change did not mean lost of importance of the metropolis in this region. What occured was a transformation in the nature of the relation between metropolis and the region, because some cities begin to develop the role of the medium sized cities and to stablish relations in which the mediation sometimes is not developed by the regional metropolis, allowing a discussion about the metropolization of the space. Concluding, it is possible to say which the relation between the metropolitan Belém and the medium sized cities of Marabá and Macapá must be understood in the apices of this process of concentration and centralization of the capital which took the country and which restructured all its urban dynamics, in the horizontal and vertical plans.

The Neighborhoods Jardim Estoril: the role of Martha companies in the southern sector of Bauru- SP (1957-2008)

Capelozza, Ana Carolina Alvares 17 June 2016 (has links)
This essay studies the formation and produce of exclusive neighborhoods to highincome population that is concentraded in the southern sector of Bauru-SP. The spacial area is defined by the five allotments Estoril yard, with an area of 110 hectares approximately, owned by a single family. The approval of the first strictly single-family residential allotment, the Estoril 1 yard, in 1957, and the implantation of the last one, the Residential Estoril 5 yard, in 2008, set the temporal cut. Through the analysis of Marthas family involvement in Bauru, of the approval processes, implantation and marketing of housing developments and public investments in the southern sector, shows itself as the design of strictly single-family residential subdivision remains, at the same time that fits the demands of the real estate sector over fifty years.

Prospecção de oportunidades para a otimização dos processos de usinagem na pequena e média empresa em São Carlos/SP / Prospection of opportunities for the optimization of machining processes at small and medium-sized enterprises in São Carlos/SP

Heymeyer, Tobias 12 April 2006 (has links)
Machining operations make possible the construction of machines and equipment which provide the maintenance of society welfare and its evolution. Studying the technology directions and the production systems adequacy to the sustainable development paradigm enables the discussion of machining and the fostering of the processes at the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). Because of the vulnerability to the market and its transformations these companies should have conditions to respond to the demands at the importance level of their function. The access to the knowledge and technology brings a gain in competence and competitiveness. Technology provides conditions for higher productivity, quality and processes control, as well as the new production paradigm leads to the elimination of the environmental impacts, rationalization and reduction in the use of non renewable materials preserving and maintaining the planet’s natural systems. In this research it was possible to know the facilities and the technical staff of eleven metalworking companies (SME), in São Carlos city, São Paulo state. The gathered data allows to draw a portrait that puts in evidence the potentials and deficiencies. On a next stage a specific machining operation was chosen to be improved in the economic, social and environmental aspects. The achieved results allow projections of gains in the industrial park. In a final evaluation of the small and medium-sized enterprises support mechanism it suggests a quality improvement assuring the availability of the model that is easily reproducible.

Microfinance and entrepreneurship in Madagascar / Microfinance et entrepreneuriat à Madagascar

Baraton, Pierrick 27 June 2017 (has links)
Developing countries, especially countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, are confronted with the need to reduce poverty while their populations are stillincreasing at high rates. Micro small and medium-sized enterprises hold the highest potential for job creation and income generation. However, lack of financing, among numerous other obstacles, significantly impedes their development.Microfinance institutions have played, and continue to play, a significant role in meeting the growing financing needs of MSEs excluded from the formal financial sector. In this dissertation, we attempt to illustrate some points to pay particular attention to in order to increase microfinance impacts. Firstly, we highlight that initial financial constraints may prevent entrepreneurs from investing in their first-choice sector and that ultimately, this misallocation of talent could be detrimental for growth. This result emphasizes the need for start-up financing, which is one of the riskiest and most critical aspects of running a business. Secondly, we draw attention on the fact that up-scaling strategies implemented by MFIs may lead to competition with banks. The net economic impact of up scaling strategies will depend on how much MFIs neglect the poorest clients (mission drift) and to what extent clients with the highest growth potential can in fact resort to commercial banks. Finally, we shed light on the fact that the lack of financial knowledge among entrepreneurs may actually skew their financing choices and ultimately prevent them from obtaining more affordable sources of financing. As a whole, MSEs need special attention to foster their growth and contribution to job creation. MFIs are a powerful tool to help MSEs meet growth objectives, but optimal development may require other forms of financial assistance and better suited funding.

Governing or being governed? A scalar approach of the transformation of State power and authority through the case of immigration and integration policies of four frontier towns in Israel / Gouverner ou être gouverné ?

Desille, Amandine 01 June 2017 (has links)
Mutations of scales of power, as well as the role of immigration in the physical and symbolic production of the city, are analysed through immigrant integration policies in the cities of Acre, Arad, Kiryat Gat and Kiryat Shmona in Israel. Jewish immigration policies, as defined by the State of Israel from 1950s onwards, are challenged by decentralisation. However, only some local governments actively make local immigrant integration policies. The inquiry shows that these mid-sized cities proactively formulate a local policy in order to “choose” the immigrants that settle on the one hand; and to access new channels of public resources on the other hand.In that context, the implementation of an immigrant policy in the city leads to interdependence between actors located at various scales of power. With the fragmentation of responsibilities, actors compete to obtain the public and private resources for immigrant integration. Immigration is part of the making of place. Through the reintegration of former waves of immigration, and the imagined potential of future immigrants, immigration is foreseen as a demographic, economic or cultural renewal. It is a lever to redefine the development scales of those frontier towns. Keywords: Scales, governance, local governments, places, mid-sized cities, biographical method, immigration, integration policies, Israel.

Estruturas de governança e a capacidade de inovação em pequenas empresas: caso da indústria brasileira de torrefação e moagem de café / Governance structures and innovative capabilities in small firms: case of the Brazilian roast & ground coffee industry

Jardim, Gabriela Feresin 14 June 2012 (has links)
The motivation for this work is the lack of relevance generally ascribed by economic studies to the innovative ability of small and mid-sized firms. These firms represent the majority of Brazilian companies, accounting for over two thirds of employment in the private sector (SEBRAE, 2006). Understanding of this issue is important, because innovation can enhance their competitiveness in the global and domestic market. Also, recent approaches from the Economics of Organizations associate innovations with the organizational structures of firms (BARBIERI; ÁLVARES, 2004; COOMBS, METCALFE, 2005; GRANDORI, FURNARI, 2008, 2010). This work therefore aims to find the combinations of governance structures (internal and external) that allow the greatest scope for developing the innovation capacity of small firms. Going beyond Grandori and Furnari\'s approach (2008, 2010), which demonstrates that a relationship exists between internal governance structures and a firm\'s innovation capacity, this paper also incorporates the external framework insofar as it accepts that the innovation process also involves interactions between governance structures external to the firm. We draw on the literature of the New Institutional Economics to address these issues and test them through a survey of 110 Brazilian R&G coffee industries. Two types of innovation are investigated: i. product; ii. method/process. To determine the combinations of elements we used the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) software fs/QCA, version 2.0 (RAGIN, 2008). Our hypothesis is that the ability to innovate is more prevalent in firms that use a mix of governance structures (internal and external) than in those with a singular structure. As a result, it was found that plural internal governance structures, which combine monetary, bureaucratic, and community incentives, have more consistent innovation results for small roasting firms. With regards to external governance structures, the main structure presented--concerning both customers and suppliers--was the market. This unique structure did not show significant results for innovation capacity, supporting the present hypothesis. It was also observed that the combination of internal and external governance structures is not complementary, because for the innovative R&G firms the internal governance structures saw the greatest impact. In allowing the identification of the organizational requirements that create greater opportunities for innovation, these results can help chart the actions of public and private policies which enable Brazilian companies to improve their rate of innovation and competitiveness in their markets.
