Peltonen, Måns, Hammarström, Andréa January 2018 (has links)
As teacher students, we have on many occasions come across and studied different textbooks for religion. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to research how sex and gender are presented in the textbooks for the course “religion 1” in the Swedish upper secondary school. The two thesis questions are: How are sex and gender presented in two different teaching materials in the Abrahamic religions? How does school law's demands for equality manifest in the analysed textbooks? When limiting the scope of the research to get a manageable amount of data we chose two textbooks written after the new guidelines for the Swedish upper secondary school which took effect in the year 2011 and are used in the public schools in Gävle. Further limiting the amount of data we decided to only go into detail on the Abrahamic religions, which had dedicated chapters in each book. For the method we decided discourse analysis would be fitting as what we are researching is how sex and gender are represented in the text. As both textbooks contain images on almost every page we also use some methods for analysing images from the book Reading Images (Kress & Van Leeuwen 2006). The results showed a heteronormative discourse which is present in both textbooks and is especially noticeable when describing the relationship between God and man. God is usually described with the pronoun He while humans present in the books are referred to as she. The discourse also changes depending on the topic. In the topic of describing the history of the religions men are more present, and in the rare cases when women are present the text doesn’t treat them as individuals. When discussing the present questions about feminism and changing the religions to fit the modern society are more frequent, but even here God is referred to as a man and it’s described that mankind - she - is supposed to follow and obey.

Lärobokens roll i matematikundervisningen. / Role of Textbooks in Mathematics Education : General Didactic Application of the van Hiele Theories on the Introduction of Algebra.

Thornér, Kristina January 2005 (has links)

/
This paper is a text analysis of how some Swedish textbooks in mathematics introduce algebra filtered by van Hiele theories of levels of thinking. The van Hiele theories emphasize that the language constitutes the knowledge objects in mathematics, wich is used all through the analysis. Generally the textbooks start at the third van Hiele’s level of thinking. According to the van Hiele theories the teaching of algebra should start at level 1. This then becomes the teachers’ task to do without the support of the textbook in mathematics. Ideas on teaching level 1 and 2 are included.

To exist or not to exist : A Textbook Analysis of English as a Foreign Language and Swedish as a Second Language Textbooks with Focus on Bias and the Portrayal of Minorities

Racic, David, Zdrnja, Maja January 2011 (has links)
The content of teaching materials considerably affects pupils’ attitudes and worldview. This paper is an analysis of textbooks used in 7th through 9th grade of the Swedish School system in Swedish as a Second Language (SSL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The purpose of this paper is to look at which minority groups, the five official national minorities as well as other minorities, are included and portrayed in the textbook series Tre gånger svenska and Wings Mini as well as to see if there is any bias in their portrayal. The seven types of bias investigated; invisibility, stereotyping and generalizations, unreality, imbalance and selectivity, fragmentation and isolation, linguistic bias and cosmetic bias are an adaption of the framework to detect bias in curriculum materials presented by Sadker and Zittleman (2002/2003). An explanation of the term bias is presented and the paper also discusses ethnicity due to the necessity of making groups to be studied. The study shows that neither of the textbooks examined adhere to the curriculum of the Swedish compulsory school system’s demand for objectivity and that the goal that all children should have knowledge about the five national minorities and their cultures, languages, religion and history is not fulfilled by these books. All seven forms of bias are present in both textbook series with stereotyping being the most frequent form in the SSL material. In the EFL material all forms except cosmetic bias and unreality are found throughout the textbooks. The language in the EFL material contributes to a Eurocentric colonial tone and in countries outside of Great Britain minorities are given little space and are portrayed in mainly stereotypically historical contexts and not as present in a modern society. Although the SSL material frequents many names and pictures of minorities many of them are cosmetic. The concept of ethnocentrism is explicitly brought up to discussion by the same authors/editors who let the language in these textbooks draw up a dichotomy between majority and minority groups which is not present in the EFL material. The need for different perspectives is brought up and colonialism is presented as an invasion with negative effects for the native peoples in countries outside of Sweden. Both textbook series make the new world economical order almost invisible by generally presenting countries in Asia, Africa and South- and Central America in only a rural perspective focused on poverty. The need for didactic text competency for teachers is discussed and a question is posed on politicians’ responsibility to provide financial possibilities for schools to buy new textbooks as the curriculum and the Swedish school system are being changed this year.

: Modeling knowledge ideals of content and disposition in biology textbooks

Ekström, Andrea January 2013 (has links)
The aim for this paper has been to examine three textbooks designed for science education in upper secondary school in order to determine whether they convey any specific attitudes regarding what is considered to be ideal knowledge within the field of biology. The main focus has been to investigate if different types of design strategies have been used to emphasize certain values or attitudes and if this proves to be the case, how is this achieved specifically? For this purpose I have conducted several different qualitative linguistic analyses of the textbooks. The theoretical framework for the analyses lies within the main field of critical linguistics and more specifically in the context of systemic functional linguistics. The two main language models I have chosen to use for my investigations are functional grammar and multimodal text analysis. My results imply amongst other things that by conducting an overall assessment of the headlines in the textbooks a fair assessment can be made of which overall attitudes the books convey. Another founding that has proven to be of relevance is the multimodal analysis of the introductory chapter within each textbook. This chapter conveys more than anything else the true attitudes the authors have, not only towards the school subject itself but also, to the reader. Furthermore, the overall language use in the introduction significantly reveals the textbooks approach and usability as an educational tool.

Teaching speaking in the English classroom : Teacher practices in Swedish upper secondary schools

Villegas Martínez, Jorge January 2018 (has links)
This qualitative study aims to investigate how teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) work to develop their students’ oral proficiency. The study analyses interviews and pedagogical materials to elucidate how the interviewed teachers regard their students’ oral proficiency, what kind of activities they use for teaching speaking and how they assess oral proficiency. The participants were two licensed English teachers of higher upper secondary education, and different materials that the teachers used were analysed, including a textbook. The teachers regarded their students’ oral proficiency as generally good or very good but noted that significant differences existed in most groups regarding proficiency and that certain students who were less proficient showed an unwillingness to use the target language, which indicates a need of better strategies to involve these students in the learning process. The findings of this study suggest that the interviewed EFL teachers teach speaking according to the communicative approach and that the activities they use more frequently for teaching speaking were discussions, followed by presentations, speeches, role-playing and debates. However, the interviews and the pedagogical materials reflected a lack of focus on the features of spoken language, the importance of which has been proven by findings in corpus linguistics and conversation analysis. These findings indicate a need to raise awareness among teachers about the benefits of focusing on the features of spoken language. Regarding assessment, informal formative assessment in the form of direct observation was the most common form, while formal assessment was used in presentations and examinations in the form of group discussions. The teachers acknowledged some confusion regarding assessment due to the lack of clear guidelines from Skolverket. Moreover, they regarded speaking as being more important than other skills, which indicates the possibility of redefining the value of speaking in the course evaluation.

Znalosti přírodnin u žáků 1. stupně ZŠ. / Products of Nature Knowledge of Primary School Pupils

BUDKOVÁ, Lucie January 2010 (has links)
This diploma thesis inquires the products of nature knowledge of primary school pupils. The products of nature knowledge are inquired in the form of a didactic test, which is very well usable in the school practice. Furthermore, it mentions natural sciences textbooks and workbooks, which are one of the sources for gaining the products of nature knowledge for pupils. By means of the textbook analysis, the amount of the products of nature is shown, which a pupil should learn during their school attendance at primary school. The conclusions of the research serve to create an image of how pupils know living products of nature, which are a part of their everyday life. "Diploma thesis was solved in terms of the project GA JU č. 065/2010/S."
