Äganderätt i svensk skogsdebatt : En retorisk analys av hinder och möjligheter för samförstånd i en polariserad debatt / Property rights in Swedish forest debate : A rhetorical analysis of obstacles and possibilites for mutual understanding in a polarized debate

Männikkö, Johanna January 2022 (has links)
The climate crisis has increased the demands on Swedish forestry and given fuel to an already polarized debate concerning how Swedish forests should be managed and what constitutes sustainable forestry. Questions of ownership and who should have a say in the matter is at the center of this conflict. This essay examines the topic of ownership in the Swedish forest debate. The argumentation of stakeholders in the debate was analyzed to show which topoi contribute to the conflict and create inertia towards reaching mutual understanding. Thirty-nine opinion articles from Swedish news media, published between April and October 2021, were analyzed through a critical textual analysis. Two primary groupings among the debaters were found: those who argue to strengthen the rights of forest owners, and those who argue for more regulation or conservation. Identified topoi show that emotions and trust play a key role in the conflict. Ways of working with this and possibilities for discursive meeting places are discussed. Making explicit important values, clearly defining important terms, and focusing on the right subject matters are also suggested to enhance possibilities for mutual understanding.

Fans Don't Boo Nobodies: Image Repair Strategies of High-Profile Baseball Players During the Steroid Era

Nielsen, Kevin R. 23 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Baseball's Steroid Era put many different high-profile athletes under pressure to explain steroid allegations that were made against them. This thesis used textual analysis of news reports and media portrayals of the athletes, along with analysis of their image repair strategies to combat those allegations, to determine how successful the athletes were in changing public opinion as evidenced through the media. The contexts, media reports, and strategies of Jason Giambi, Mark McGwire, Andy Pettitte, and Roger Clemens were analyzed and revealed important implications involving effective use of image repair strategies. They provided a deeper framework for the success of mortification strategies. An authentic, sincere mortification strategy has more power to change the media's reporting and portrayal of the athlete, while stunted or incentivized mortification strategies provide diminishing results. The four different situations of the players and the different combinations of strategies used provide insight into how much a public persona matters in confronting allegations. They show how ineffective the strategy of minimization is against allegations that involve on-field performance. The situations reveal how the promise of future on-field actions, along with actual on-field success can help repair an athlete's image without a solid rhetorical strategy. They show the amount of information offered, along with the strategies used, influences the amount of persuasion that occurs. The different situations also showed how a complete image repair strategy is successful in ending news coverage of the allegations and not just changing the media portrayal.

Time Out for Women Magazine: A New Magazine Prospectus Informed by a Historical Review and Qualitative Study on the Media Uses of Mormon Women

Dunn, Maurianne 17 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This project uses a qualitative research approach to understanding Mormon women's uses and gratifications of magazines. The first study provides a retrospective look at the uses and gratifications of readers of the Relief Society Magazine (1915–1970) in order to understand where media targeted to Mormon women has been. Through interviews, focus groups and questionnaires, the study finds the main reasons Mormon women read the Relief Society Magazine was to provide (a) a handbook for daily life, (b) a community, (c) intellectual stimulation, (d) an aspirational ideal, and (e) an escape from daily life. When the magazine ceased publication, readers felt a sense of loss and recognized a need to move on. The second study researches Mormon women's current uses and gratifications of media, with a focus on magazine use. Through focus groups and questionnaires, the main uses and gratifications of current media among Mormon women include (a) interaction, (b) cognition, (c) and diversion. Mormon women's media use is also influenced by warnings from others about the dangers of particular media or too much media use. This project then presents the concept and design for a new magazine targeted to Mormon women and seeks to fulfill the needs and gratifications found in the research discussed here.

"And Well She Can Persuade": the Power and Presence of Women in the Book of Mormon

Christian, Wendy Hamilton 01 January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
This work is the first of its kind on women in the Book of Mormon. It (1) is an exhaustive treatment of the book's female characters, (2) analyzes how women function in the text, and (3) delineates the text's female-inclusive language. This thesis contains a complete list and discussion of the identifiable women in the Book of Mormon (Chapter 1); provides a compilation and treatment of the book's gender-inclusive language—comprising over 200 words and more than 5,000 references to them—and its bearing on the doctrines and depictions of women in the narrative (Chapter 2); and illustrates the significant influence individual women had on the Nephite-Lamanite-Jaredite civilization (Chapter 3). This study concludes with a chapter that attempts to account for the scarcity of women's stories in the narrative and the minimal knowledge we are provided about them compared to men. Readers will find overwhelming evidence from this thesis that women figure more prominently in the narrative than we often realize. This work offers a compelling argument for the pervasive and powerful presence of women in the Book of Mormon.

Det står ju i boken! : En fallstudie av den semiotiska designen av musikteoretiska läroböcker / The book says so! : A case study of the semiotic design of music theory textbooks

Larsson, Daniel January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyse how music theory textbooks are designed regarding practical and creative use of music theory knowledge. Research into music theory education suggests that students and pupils appreciate when theoretical knowledge is put into practical and creative activities that also relate to their own musical practices. Pupils and students have perceived problems with music theory as a subject, including excessive piano centrism as well as lacking diversity and exclusive focus on European music. Other studies suggest that both students and teachers have perceived lacking integration between music theory and other subjects. This study uses a qualitative research strategy as well as a social semiotic perspective. The study analyses two music theory textbooks teaching harmonic theory from a Western perspective. The results show that the books’ main modes are text, musical notation, and text boxes. These modes have regular relational functions with each other and the reader since multiple practical exercises are to be accomplished. Additionally, the study identifies several textual functions that convey different meanings, namely the piano centric, the notation and term centric, and the convention centric functions. The results are discussed with regards to previous research in the field. For example, parallels are drawn between this study and previous research into students perceived problems with music theory education, including piano centrism and excessive focus on specific genres, as well as previous research into practical activities based on music theory.

Kompetens för HR-arbete : En kvalitativ studie av samtida platsannonser

Eriksson, Josefin, Stolpe, Linn January 2024 (has links)
Competence is a controversial concept, both in research and in professional life, and depends on the situation and context. As a result, there is often no common understanding of what constitutes a competence. This qualitative study aims to provide knowledge about competence and its meaning in job advertisements for Human Resource (“HR”) work in the public and private sector. In order to fulfil the purpose of this essay a textual analysis will be carried out. The reason for this is to identify existing competences in the job advertisements and then to interpret and analyse them based on Ellström's (1992) definition together with Nilsson and Ellström's (2012) division of competence. This theoretical framework is used to interpret and understand the meaning of the existing competences. The results of the study show that there are no obvious differences between the public and private sectors. The competences that exist for HR work can be interpreted as social, personal, cognitive and affective competences, which can be seen as relatively transferable between different professions, other than HR. The study therefore concludes that the competences that appear in the job advertisements studied describe a certain type of person rather than a job description of HR work, regardless of whether it is in the public or private sector.
