This thesis brings as an original academic contribution the establishment of positive and significant theoretical relations between factors influencing and resulting from the collecting practice that stand out in the existing literature, arguing that positive emotional factors influence the thematic interest of the collector, which in turn provides emotional well-being and suppression of frustration, expansion and extension of the self and feelings of personal nostalgia. In order to meet the objective of investigating the correlations between the proposed constructs, a mixed methodological approach was adopted. The bibliographic survey served as a theoretical basis for the definition of hypotheses and the design of a conceptual model. The exploratory qualitative research carried out with five opinion leaders linked to the thesis’ object of study - the collectors of statues and action figures - consolidated an understanding about the motivators involved in this type of collection. Quantitative descriptive research occurred in three distinct phases. At first, scales were developed and adapted following recommended psychometric procedures. A sample with 250 collectors was used as a pre-test in order to determine the measurement model. After the validation and evaluation of the reliability of the scales, the theoretical relations hypothesized were analyzed by means of confirmatory factor analysis and structural equations modeling based on PLS. Two surveys were carried out with collectors of statues and action figures, one in Brazil, with a sample of 700 collectors, and another in the United States, with a sample of 250 collectors, comparing the results of the measurement and structural models. The results indicate that early positive emotions influence the thematic interest of the collector, leading him to collect as a form of identity expression (extension of the self) and search for the expansion of the self (expanded self), through the possession of collection objects, with effect on the individual's emotional wellbeing. Extended Self and Expanded Self constructs prove distinct in their conceptual perspectives. In addition, the age group is shown as an important moderating variable in the relationships between suppression of frustration and personal nostalgia - the objects of collection evoke memories and nostalgic feelings and play a compensatory role. On the other hand, the origin of the collectors (Brazil and USA) does not appear as a moderating variable of the predicted theoretical relations, which indicates indistinct influencing and resulting factors. As a general conclusion, the thesis offers a way for the construction of a theory on collectivism, with an unprecedented and initial understanding of relevant causal relations.

Ressaltando, inclusive, a influência do bullying nessas práticas. / The institutionalized practice of rites of passage, which historically supported individuals in the various periods of life transition, seems to have disappeared in contemporary societies. Some authors even highlight the gap in initiation rites that marked the transition from childhood to adolescence; thus, provoking an identity gap, previously clearly delimited categories become blurred and children lose an important mechanism to deal with change. However, considering that consumption enables the self-knowledge and the communication of one´s identity, the market assumes a central cultural institutional role, around which these children construct their identities; especially in the most critical period of transition, that of liminality. Characterized as a period of extreme self-ambiguity and social invisibility, the liminal phase of rites of passage is an under-researched topic and a fertile theoretical lens to analyze the role of consumption, in this period of transition between two concrete and recognized sociocultural spaces, childhood and adolescence. Therefore, this study carried out an immersion in the universe of girls between the ages of eight and twelve years old, who belong to this liminal group called tweens; and so, contributing with a multifaceted perspective of the consumption and identity construction of these girls. As in a hand-crafted patchwork, the final result presents a unique perspective, but formed by the assembling of different conceptions of the agents involved: - mothers, girls and the researcher herself. Over two years, data were collected through different techniques, such as in-depth interviews with mothers in Brazil and the USA, participant observation and introspective diary of the researcher, mother of a tween, and interviews filmed by a tween girl with her own friends; which provided a unique opportunity to portray the universe of the girls by themselves, with the least possible interference of the researcher. The results contribute to previous studies, increasing the understanding of the girls' behavior and their consumption and socialization practices during the transition. Also, they highlight the influence of bullying on these practices. Besides emphasizing that liminality can be experienced not only by the individual who goes through the transition, but also by those emotionally involved in this process, in this case, the mothers.

[en] AFFECTIVE ANSWERS FROM LOW-INCOME CONSUMERS TO INVOLUNTARY LOSSES OF BENEFITS AND SYMBOLIC POSSESSIONS / [pt] RESPOSTAS AFETIVAS DE CONSUMIDORES DE BAIXA RENDA A PERDAS INVOLUNTÁRIAS DE BENS E POSSES SIMBÓLICOS

LUCIANA BELLINI RANGEL 09 April 2018 (has links)
[en] This study seek to identify affective answers due to involuntary losses of symbolic possessions of low-income people who socially ascended in the period from 2003 to 2013 identifying themselves as members of the Brazilian middle class. Due to the economic crisis, these consumers suffered symbolically significant losses that affected the constitution of part of their self. Starting from the understanding that those losses go beyond simple material deprivation and extend to the construction of an acquired identity, the work proposes that affective responses to involuntary losses stablish a strong relationship with the phases identified by Kubler-Ross (2000): denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Twelve consumers who had risen socially and also were recently hit by the economic crisis were interviewed, having suffered considerable upheavals in their construction of the self. The phenomenological interviews were conducted and interpreted as proposed by Thompson, Locander and Pollio (1989 – 2015). The phases of reaction to loss were evident in the experience lived by the interviewees, contributing to the understanding how losses of symbolic possessions resemble the death of the identity also affect the self and its extent. Kubler-Ross s (2000) approach sought to fill the theoretical gap identified by Black (2011) and Smyczeck and Glowick (2011) regarding the effects of loss on consumer behavior.

[en] LOW INCOME CONSUMERS AND THEIR EXTENDED SELF IN VEHICLES / [pt] CONSUMIDORES DE BAIXA RENDA E O SEU EU ESTENDIDO EM VEÍCULOS

[en] The growth of the purchasing power of the low-income population in Brazil and the consequent increase on the demand for vehicles by this stratum of society made the Brazilian automotive market grow in the first decade of the 2000 s. The close relationship that these consumers began to have with their vehicles is the object of the present study, which has as its main theoretical base the theory developed initially by Belk. The author stipulates that consumption objects become extensions of one s self because of the symbolism it carries and represents. The main objective of the study, therefore, is to understand what are the meanings attributed by low-income consumers to their cars and how such vehicles are represented as an extension of the Self of these individuals. For this, in-depth interviews were conducted with low-income consumers in the city of Rio de Janeiro who owned cars. Based on the interviews, it was possible to identify the relationship between these individuals and their cars and, thus, come to some conclusions.

Constructing the Brand Luxury Scale

Yang,Chun-Yu Unknown Date (has links)
“Luxury Democratization” brings great growth to the luxury goods market, but also forced these brands to confront consumers with different attitudes and tastes. As a result, it is critical for luxury brand managers to understand consumer’s perception of brand luxury in order to maintain the brands’ luxury image. This research focused on the confirmation of Brand Luxury Scale to understand Taiwanese cousumers’ perception of brand luxury. Based on the Scale, the influence of purchase experience to luxury perception was tested, and the competitive advantages of five luxury brands were analyzed. Competitive strategies of each brand were futher developed. Research was conducted by using five luxury brands and expected to achieve the following research purposes: (1)Confirm the Brand Luxury Scale to establish a managerial tool for brand luxuriousness evaluation; (2)Use the Brand Luxury Scale to evaluate the influence of purchase experience to luxury perception; (3)Use the Brand Luxury Scale to evaluate consumers’ perception of different brands, and seek to imply different competitive strategies for these brands base on the analysis. After the conduction of research framework, sampling design and data collection, Secondary Comfirmatory Factor Analysis was used to confirm the structure of Brand Luxury Scale. 1-Way ANOVA was used to test the influence of purchase experience to luxury perception. Finally, Multi-Dimensional Scaling Analysis was implied to analyze the perceptual position of each brand. The research findings are as below: (1)Brand Luxury is constructed by five dimensions: Perceived Conspicuousness, Perceived Uniqueness, Perceived Quality, Perceived Hedonic, and Perceived Extended-self. The order of dimensional influence is Perceived Hedonic> Perceived Extended -self> Perceived Uniqueness> Perceived Conspicuousness> Perceived Quality. (2)No difference in brand luxury perception between different purchasing experience consumers was found, showing that the perceptions of brand luxury of Taiwanese consumers’ remain unchanged after purchase. (3)Perceived Quality is the most important dimension of all, and the five luxury brands tested needs to improve in dimensions of Perceived Quality, Perceived Hedonic, and Perceived Uniqueness. According to the results, several managerial implications were derived, including key factors in marketing and competitive strategy of each brand. These strategies can be used in improving the performance of perceived luxuriousness of brand, enhancing brand luxury image, and planning the direction of luxury marketing and brand strategy.

Consumption in life transition : How do unemployed consumers behave in the marketplace?

Sihvo, Cecilia, Mesanovic, Diana January 2010 (has links)
Background: We live in a world where not everyone is employed; numerous people havelost their jobs due to several factors where one of them is the economic crisis. This has hada huge impact on Sweden and the unemployment rate. Previous research has shown thatinflation, unemployment, and high interest rates represent risks to consumer welfare. We all consume daily, or on occasions, but how do unemployed consumers consume, what do they consume and why? In this area, the authors have found a knowledge gap in literature; therefore exploring this phenomenon is of interest.   Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore and illustrate how consumers who have experienced a life transition, from employment to unemployment, are affected by this and how it has an impact on their consumption.   Method: This is an exploratory study performed with a qualitative and an abductive approach, where the authors used primary data collection through semi-structured in-depth interviews in Swedish with 16 unemployed consumers. These unemployed consumers were selected at Arbetsförmedlingen, the public employment service, in Jönköping.   Results: By living in unemployment the consumers have been affected psychologically, physically, financially and socially. Their identity has changed for each of them since they have to adapt to the new circumstances in their life. The new life situation has had an impact on the consumer’s well-being where depression, anxiety, and a feeling of being the underdog in the society is present. Their new life situation has implied a change in their consumption behavior since they nowadays have to prioritize the basic needs. Many of the respondents used explicit and implicit shopping-list in order to reduce their impulse buying. The contribution that the authors have done to the theory of resistance is a fourth category called ‘Everyday life resistance’ which explains the behavior of people who live in unemployment, i.e. they always have to think about resisting temptations, wants, desires, and avoiding situations where the result may be unnecessary consumption. The consumers in this study are highly involved in their consumption behavior, which the authors have chosen to call ‘reversed habitual decision making’. This kind of involvement is very high despite the high- or low risk category of the product. Their new life situation has made them more aware of product alternatives, market supply, prices, and also knowledge about their own resistance in the marketplace.
