Tongues, prophecy and the problem of judgement by outsiders : reading 1 Corinthians 14:20-25 in regular order

Kim, Sungjong January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to evaluate and validate a possible reading of 1 Corinthians 14.20-25 in regular order. The main finding of this study can be summarized as follows. a. In a contradiction between 14.22 and 14.23-25, 14.22 is not Paul the Apostle’s logical mistake, but his pastoral wisdom to remedy a conflict between the strong and the weak within the divisions of the Corinthian church. Paul’s plan is for two or three to speak, with other believers weighing this, whereas, problematically, all are speaking and non-believers are judging. This contradicts the principle set out in 6.1-11. It also exacerbates the Corinthian divisions because the judgement of the non-believers will tend to favour the ‘strong’.b. The second finding is another interpretive possibility of tongue described in 1 Cor 14 as silent tongue. c. The third finding is a relationship between the Dead Sea Scrolls and the law of 1 Corinthians 14.21. This thesis explained on how this finding is related to a conflict between the strong and the weak centering around speaking in tongues. The results of this study indicate that 14.23-25 can be read as Paul the Apostle’s worry over the Corinthian church’s wrong application of the gifts of the Holy Spirit by which outsiders might judge believers’ speech and actions.

Internal-External Locus of Control in Glossolalics

Coulson, Jesse E. 12 1900 (has links)
Internal-external locus of control was studied in relationship to the religious phenomena "glossolalia." Contrary to the main hypothesis formulated, glossolalics were found significantly more internal in locus of control than non-tongues speakers. Intercorrelations were studied between the variables of I-E, age, length of church membership, income level, educational level, and perceived control by God, for tongue-speaker and non-tongue-speaker groups. Chisquare comparisons were made between the groups on educational level, income level, and perceived control by God, with significant differences being found in educational level. Additional analysis was made between I-E and the variables of educational levels, income levels, and perceived control by God. Historical and current interpretations of the personality of glossolalics are challenged. The construct validity of the Rotter scale for use with religious populations is challenged.

The Character and Origin of the Soil Tongues in the Burford Loam / Soil Tongues In The Burford Loam

Grubb, Alquin Meirion Jacob 04 1900 (has links)

A pedological investigation was made of the soil tongues in the Burford loam soils of S. W. Ontario. The purpose of the study was to determine the characteristic features of the soil tongues. The physical and chemical properties of a number of soil tongues were determined and one was used for a micromorphological investigation. Measurements of horizontal and vertical extent were also made. Discussion of the various hypotheses that might account for soil tongue development is included. Evidence for a periglacial climate is given and also f'or the existence of two distinct types of soil tongues.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Separatrix splitting for the extended standard family of maps

Wronka, Agata Ewa January 2011 (has links)
This thesis presents two dimensional discrete dynamical system, the extended standard family of maps, which approximates homoclinic bifurcations of continuous dissipative systems. The main subject of study is the problem of separatrix splitting which was first discovered by Poincaré in the context of the n-body problem. Separatrix splitting leads to chaotic behaviour of the system on exponentially small region in parameter space. To estimate the size of the region the dissipative map is extended to complex variables and approximated by differential equation on a specific domain. This approach was proposed by Lazutkin to study separatrix splitting for Chirikov’s standard map. Furthermore the complex nearly periodic function is used to estimate the width of the exponentially small region where chaos prevails and the map is related to the semistandard map. Numerical computations require solving complex differential equation and provide the constants involved in the asymptotic formula for the size of the region. Another problem studied in this thesis is the prevalence of resonance for the dissipative standard map on a specific invariant set, which for one dimensional map corresponds to a circle. The regions in parameter space where periodic behaviour occurs on the invariant set is known as Arnold tongues. The width of Arnold tongue is studied and numerical results obtained by iterating the map and solving differential equation are related to the semistandard map.

The Babel paradox

Machado, Michel 01 June 2009 (has links)
The purpose of the book of Acts is still not well understood. Various interpretations have been offered in order to make sense of the narrative and its author's intention. What is the point of Luke's second book in portraying the evangelization of the Roman Empire as a rabid confrontation between Jewish followers of Jesus and other Jewish people? This matter calls for an examination of the relationship between the mother religion and the Jesus movement as it expands into a universal religion. Luke portrays the Jesus movement as the focus of divine favor, in contradistinction to the Jewish nation which is presented as opposing the plan of God. Christians respond to persecution by declaring the opponents guilty of opposition to the very work of the Holy Spirit. This portrait of a troubled relationship has led to many confusing or misguided interpretations of the text. What are the implications of the apparent break of continuity between the Jesus movement and the Jewish people? Does the book of Acts give to Israel a place in the divine plan, or is this work an anti-Semitic polemic? This question is so complex that three schools of thought have arisen to attempt to reconcile the conflicting themes. These scholars recognize the friction between Christians and Jews, but debate the significance of the missing explicit repudiation of Israel. Two of these schools view God as continuing to work through the people of Israel, while the third proposes that God has repudiated Israel as the elect nation, replacing her with the Christian Church. This thesis proposes that there has been inadequate attention to the possibility that the narrative is imbedded with neglected Jewish themes, like Pentecost and the gift of Languages (Tongues). Several texts in the Hebrew Scriptures provide indications that Languages have specific implications to the Covenant with Israel, and her place in the plan of God. A deeper study of a first century understanding of these themes will produce substantial, new light on all of these questions.

Dynamique des systèmes physiques, formes normales et chaînes de Markov / Dynamics of physical systems , normal forms and Markov chains

Romaskevich, Olga 07 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with the questions of asymptotic behavior of dynamical systems and consists of six independent chapters. In the first part of this thesis we consider three particular dynamical systems. The first two chapters deal with the models of two physical systems: in the first chapter, we study the geometric structure and limit behavior of Arnold tongues of the equation modeling a Josephson contact; in the second chapter, we are interested in the Lagrange problem of establishing the asymptotic angular velocity of the swiveling arm on the surface. The third chapter deals with planar geometry of an elliptic billiard. The forth and fifth chapters are devoted to general methods of studying the asymptotic behavior of dynamical systems. In the forth chapter we prove the convergence of markovian spherical averages for free group actions on a probablility space. In the fifth chapter we provide a normal form for skew-product diffeomorphisms that can be useful in the study of strange attractors of dynamical systems.

The study of chaotic phase synchronization of nonlinear electronic circuits and solid-state laser systems

Lin, Chien-Hui 12 July 2012 (has links)
We study the chaotic phase synchronization (CPS) between the external periodically driving signals and the nonlinear dynamic systems. The periodical signal was applied to drive the Chua circuit system with two-scroll attractor and the four-scroll attractor circuit system. The phase synchronization between the outputs of these two circuit systems and the driving signals were investigated. Besides, the chaotic phase synchronization of the periodically pump-modulated microchip Nd:YVO4 laser and the microchip Nd:YVO4 laser with optical feedback were also examined in this study. Phase synchronization (PS) transition of these periodically driven nonlinear dynamic systems exhibited via the stroboscopic technique and recurrence probability. The recurrence probability and correlation probability of recurrence were utilized to estimate the degree of PS. In this thesis, the degree of PS was studied by taking into account the amplitude and frequency of the external driving signal. The experimental compatible numerical simulations also reflected the fact that the Arnold tongues are experimentally and numerically exhibited in the periodically driven nonlinear dynamic systems.

Språk och integrering i F-3 : En kvalitativ undersökning där lärare i F-3 diskuterar och reflekterar språkets och integreringens betydelse för elevernas utveckling / Language and integration in early primary school : A qualitative study where teachers in the early primary school discuss and reflect the concept and importance of language and integration based on the pupils development

Johansson Kristensen, Alexandra Elise January 2014 (has links)
The aim of my study is to see how teachers in the early primary school are working to teach all their pupils based on how different ethnicities, cultures and multilingual differences reflect on their work places – the classrooms. I've also contacted the county, were the schools are located in, so I could see what system they are using and how it affects the society. The Swedish society is influenced by different cultures, multilingualism and ethnicities the more time passes, which means that teachers all around need to integrate their pupils in the system so they can better adjust to how the Swedish school system works and be prepared for adult life. Teachers need to concentrate intensely on how they should guide the pupils in their specific class so they can reach their full learning potential and reach the knowledge criteria set by the Swedish school system. I contacted the board of education and to set up a meeting so we could discuss my project. During the meeting I asked the representative how they believe this matter should be handled. After the meeting with the board of education I’ve contacted several teachers in the area. Four teachers participated and contributed information for this study. The result of my study is that the teachers I’ve been in contact with have pupils that often speak more than one language and the hardest job is to guide them to become viable society citizens in Sweden and still have their culture, language and ethnicities with them.

[en] THE CLINIC OF TRAUMA AND THE REGRESSIVE STATES IN THE ANALYTIC SETTING / [pt] A CLÍNICA DO TRAUMA E OS ESTADOS REGRESSIVOS NO SETTING PSICANALÍTICO

GABRIEL CUNHA NUNES 26 June 2018 (has links)
[en] The present work aims to investigate the concept of trauma in psychoanalysis, as well as therapeutic regression as a way to elaborate the unrepresentable traumatic event through the analytical situation. To achieve this goal, on the first part of this work, we will analyze the notion of trauma from Sándor Ferenczi s perspective, considering the theoretical course that allowed him to formulate de idea of a trauma constituted in two times, from a confusion of tongues. On the second part, we will follow the direct and indirect unfolding of this theory in the English School of Psychoanalysis, represented by two authors belonging to the independent group: Donald W. Winnicott and Michael Balint. We shall explore then the primitive psychic functioning of the individual and the role played by the environment on the subjective constitution, as well as the severe environmental flaws and their pathogenic functions, i. e. the repercussions of the trauma understood as a catastrophic event that disrupts the emotional development. On the third part we will enter a clinical discussion, recognizing the principles that shape the analytical setting, comprehending the different uses of interpretations and the clinical manifestations of regression as a new opportunity to liquidate and elaborate the traumatic material. Lastly we shall examine the contemporary psychoanalysis suggestions over the ideas of the psychoanalysis of breakdown, by Christopher Bollas; the analytic third, by Thomas H. Ogden; and the psychoanalytic empathy, by Stefano Bolognini, show new concepts over the clinic of trauma and about how to handle regressive cases in the current psychoanalytic thought.

The Spirit and the meal : a ritual-liturgical evaluation of charismatic worship

Denny, Lindie January 2013 (has links)
The Spirit tradition is a fairly new tradition with its essential focus on experiencing the Holy Spirit. This tradition has made its latest and most influential appearance during the Azusa street revival in Los Angeles at the start of the 1900s. This has started a new wave or move if you want across the earth andhas made inroads into most other existing traditions. It is a tradition fashioned by the needs of believers and the reality of experiencing the Holy Spirit. Worship is a vital part of any Charismatic church service. Upbeat music with talented bands is up front and ready to lead people into passionate and expressive worship. Their worship stretches further than just music. They attempt to fashion their lives as a worship offering to God. Within the Charismatic tradition, the word Liturgy is unheard of, even though it is part of their service. Part of this worship includes the celebration of Communion. Communion is celebrated all over the world in most Christian churches. It has been one of the most sacred sacraments of the church through the centuries. With it came many feuds over doctrine and challenges regarding the form, meaning, presence, elements and so forth. It has been thecenter of many debates. But it still remains central to any believer. The researcher has looked at the history of the Spirit tradition within chapter 2 with its main focus on liturgical rituals of healing, exorcism and speaking in tongues. These rituals are researched and traced all through history. The rituals are present and active in every era the researcher looked at. The Theology of the spirit tradition was also explored. She then went on to look at the history of the Eucharist. The changes and forms were noted. A deeper understanding of the celebration of the Eucharist was realized and the Theology depicted the differences in opinion. No current day practical theological research is complete without Empirical research. This made the researcher more involved. By participatory observation and questionnaires, essential information was gathered regarding how believers in Charismatic churches appropriate their participation during the celebration of Communion. New insights were gained. Based on this research the researcher came to the conclusion that the Meal-and the Spirit worship traditions can come together in a more meaningful way. The true meaning needs to be taught to believers so that a deeper knowledge of the truth of Communion can be gained. Communion cannot remain watered-down and enter as an afterthought during a service. It has the potential to be an incredible experience by any Christian believer. When the Spirit and the Meal can be brought together in a more meaningful way, it has the potential to become the future of Charismatic worship. This conclusion is worked out in some detail in the final chapter. / Dissertation (MA Theol)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Practical Theology / unrestricted
