La poétique de l’interstice chez Hédi Bouraoui / The poetic of the interstice in Hedi Bouraoui’s litterature

Jacobée-Sivry, Éric 12 December 2014 (has links)
Born in Tunisia, having past its childhood to France, and having taught the comparative literature with the York University of Toronto, in Ontario, in Anglophone Canada, Hedi Bouraoui was with the crossroads of three cultures, and that mark its literary work. Believing in the “transculturalism”, in a real dialogue between the cultures, this writer came from there to write between the cultures, the literary kinds and the languages. According to him, it is the poetic one which in literary work allows best this kind of writing opened, by which the writer is not folded up on itself and its culture of origin, but written in symbiosis with all diversities which offers the world. What this does poetic of the interstice have of original in the universe of the French-speaking literature of today ? What does they brought to him ? In what she does dissociate collective or individual concerns writers and poets of the movement of the negritude ? In what also she does dissociate herself, for example, of the theory of the “whole world” of the poet Edouard Glissant ? This poetic of the interstice comes from there to support a writing in complicity between poets in Livr’errance, but also between the writer and his readers. This desire in complicity in creation as in the reception of literary work isnt’it, even partly, utopian ? Lastly, Hedi Bouraoui estimates that in its work, it is the poetic one which makes it possible best to carry out a writing of the interstice thus defined. It is the poetic one, in particular, which would travel most easily in the other literary kinds? However the account often comes to slip into the poem within its work. Isn’t it essential sometimes on him ? In the same way, the theatrical one does never come to be involved in its accounts transpoetic, in the tale transpoetic, poetry even ? Is it necessary to analyze only the work of Hedi Bouraoui under the angle of “transpoétique”, or also under the angle of what one could name “trans-narrativité and a trans-theatricalness”?

In transit : aspects of transculturalism in Janice Kulyk Keefer's travels

Mårald, Elisabeth January 1996 (has links)
Transculturalism refers to how cultural barriers are transcended and how cultures meet. Because the transcultural perspective reflects hitherto unrepresented spaces, it revises and innovates literary canons. This study investigates aspects of transculturalism in texts dealing with travel by the Canadian writer Janice Kulyk Keefer. It also explores how these aspects might alter our view of Canadian literature. The transcultural perspectives between mainstream Canada and Ukraine, Europe and Acadie have been analysed through three tropes of travel: departure, passage and arrival. Keefer’s texts have been read in accordance with Mikhail Bakhtin's dialogic theories to chart transcultural encounters and clashes. This thesis argues that a historic consciousness of their ethnic group gives the young generation a transcultural position that enables them to profit from their dual cultural competence. Although Imagined Communities are affirmed as receptacles of the cultural heritage, the impending environmental catastrophe demands that the national interests that they represent be abandoned for international co-operation. In Keefer’s European texts the transcultural aspects reflect how travel becomes synonymous with quests and epiphanies. Travelling is described as a learning process in Rest Harrow where the protagonist’s increasing cultural competence changes her from a tourist to a real traveller. The transcultural aspects also unmask prejudices, collisions and failed transitions. In this context Imagined Communities are criticized as agents of the colonial discourse, chauvinism, and intolerance. The transcultural perspective also reveals that patriarchal paradigms and the silencing of persecutions victimize the young generation. Furthermore, their ignorance of the mother tongue works as a linguistic barrier shutting them out from their ethnic group. Keefer's Acadian texts support Bakhtin's contention that isolated groups become intolerant to strangers and deviants. While the transcultural perspective unmasks tourists' perception of other countries as idiosyncratic, also the travellers' own ironic postmodernist view of themselves as tourists and of the artificiality of tourism is featured. The cultural assumptions of literary discourse are challenged by border blurring phenomena such as story-telling, the camivalesque, intertextuality and historiographic metafiction. Thus the morality of Keefer's transcultural approach lies also in her literary technique. The alternative perspective inherent in transculturalism makes individuals break away from their given cultural context to embrace a new transcultural ethos. / <p>Diss. / A Francophone identity? A literature between transculturality and Interculturalism in the novels of Ali Bécheur, Réjean Ducharme and Jacques Poulin

Fellah, Samir 10 May 2016 (has links)
The sociocultural context proves to be a major element in the identital approach of the francophone writings of JP, of RD and AB. Our own approach has tried to follow a synchronic dialectic one through various fictional episodes which constitute the field of research of our study. In the latter, the intercultural element is reconsidered as a concept leading to the rediscovery of the motif of otherness as a clear-cut distinction coming from a sense of belonging which, in turn, guides the writer's behaviour in a way which is different from what the notion of transculturalism usually implies. This idea of transculturalism supports the idea of universality and of multi-ethnic social cohesion by putting forward a polymorphic version of cultural influences which determines the features of individuals within the same society. It is also meant to point out the negative aspect of globalization as an assimilation process within this transcultural pattern which is part and parcel of the literary work.We have specifically laid the stress on the writers' narrative characteristics in order to enhance the recurring themes closely linked to the idea of identity. As a result, the internal dialogue shows a fictional swing between two determining human conditions: disenchantment and passion resulting from an obvious contemporary reality. As a follow-up to our thematic study and more specifically to our analytical one, we have chosen to end our work based on a francophone cultural and identital comparison with a psychoanalytic interpretation of the novels which are part of the corpus.

Modes of Transnationalism and Black Revisionist History: Slavery, The Transatlantic Slave Trade and Abolition in 18th and 19th Century German Literature

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: This study explores the eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century German dramatic genre Sklavenstücke (slave plays). These plays, which until recently have not received any significant attention in scholarship, articulate a nuanced critique of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade and thus bear witness to an early German-language discourse indicative of abolitionist currents.Tracing individual acts of German-language abolitionism, I investigate the correlation between abolitionist movements in the Euro-American space and German involvements in these very efforts. In this sense, I contest the notion of an absence of German abolitionist awareness in Europe during the Age of Enlightenment. My reading of these slave plays contributes to discussions about the transcultural nature of abolitionist discourse and defies the notion that abolitionist activism only emerged within the specific nation-states that have previously been the subject of scholarship. Challenging this layering both theoretically and analytically, then, requires an innovative shift that centers approaches rooted in Black thought and theories, which are the foundation of this study. These concepts are necessary for engaging with issues of slavery and abolition while at the same time exposing white paternalist perspectives and gazes. Plays of this genre often foreground the horrors of slavery at the hands of cruel white slaveholders, and characterize enslaved Black Africans as unblemished, obedient, submissive, hard-working, and grateful “beings” deserving of humanitarian benevolence. Based on these sentiments, an overarching discourse opposing slavery and the transatlantic slave trade emerged by way of German-language theatrical plays, theoretical treatises, newspaper articles, academic writings, travelogues, diary entries, and journal articles that negotiated the nature, origin, and legitimacy of Black African humanity around debates on slavery. Thus, my study demonstrates that these German-language literary contributions indicate inscribed socio-critical commentary and take up transatlantic abolitionist discourses, a dialogue that surfaced under the auspices of the Enlightenment. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation International Letters and Cultures 2020

Collaborating beyond the boundaries of citizenship: a transcultural perspective on public participation in the development of Swiss immigrant policy.

Fritze, Christine Elena 30 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines Switzerland’s conflict around the integration of non-citizens in the context of the Swiss system of direct democracy. Through a case study on three recent referendum initiatives on immigrant policy, my research sought to answer the question: How does the use of referenda on immigrant policy impact public discourses on the social and political integration of non-citizens in German-speaking Switzerland? In exploring this question, I focused on how public discourses addressed the link between direct democracy, immigrant policy and non-citizen experiences. I analysed political advertisements, newspaper articles, and data collected in an interview with Swiss resident author Dragica Rajčić. My research findings showed that the use of referendum initiatives to make decisions on immigrant policy has had a significant impact on integration discourses. In particular, it has provided the conservative nationalist Swiss People’s Party with the opportunity to move their political agenda to the forefront of public debates. My findings also demonstrated that non-citizen perspectives were marginalized in the public discourses under examination. I therefore concluded that the process of transforming the Swiss conflict around the integration of immigrants will require Swiss governments to re-imagine how the political participation of non-citizens can be institutionalized. Granting non-citizens a more active political role would promote cross-cultural dialogue and understanding, making Switzerland’s direct democracy more democratic. / Graduate

Seeing behind stray finds:understanding the Late Iron Age settlement of Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu, Finland

Hakamäki, V. (Ville) 20 November 2018 (has links)
Abstract The dissertation examines the settlement and interactions of the Late Iron Age communities of northern Finland by focusing on the archaeological sites and finds documented in the regions of Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu. The point of departure for the study is to understand the data from a local point of view as in the previous evaluations the hunter-gatherer population inhabiting the area has been overlooked with most of the discussions revolving around the peasant influence arriving from southwestern Finland and Karelia. Partially for this reason, the period in question has appeared problematic and many questions regarding the settlement remain unadressed. The reason for the poor research situation articulates with the problems related to the archaeologica remains. Most of the material must be classified as so-called stray finds or archaeological objects to which no context can be determined without excavations taking place. These stray finds comprise the most significant portion of the available data, as besides them only a few burials, dwelling sites or other feasible remains are documented in Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu. In spite of this, the research interest towards these finds has been relatively minor until recent years. The research questions are approached via three case studies, which represent stray finds that were excavated during the research process of the dissertation. These sites are addressed by taking into consideration their form, function and dating as well as examining their archaeological context on a borader geographical scale. In addition to the case studies, the dissertation considers previously known sites and finds in the research area and elsewhere in the interior and northern Fennoscandia. Based on the study, it is argued that several stray finds are associated with burial sites, dwellings and other indicators of settlement whose formation process has likely been affected by local traditions and subsistence as well as contacts and interactions with other Iron Age communities. / Tiivistelmä Tutkimus tarkastelee Pohjois-Suomen myöhäisrautakautista asutusta ja väestön vuorovaikutussuhteita Pohjois-Pohjanmaan ja Kainuun maakuntien alueelta tunnettujen löytöjen ja kohteiden valossa. Tutkimuksen keskeisimpänä lähtökohtana on näiden teemojen hahmottaminen paikallisesta näkökulmasta, sillä monissa aikaisemmissa tulkinnoissa alueella asunut metsästäjä-keräilijäväestö on jäänyt kohtalaisen vähäiselle huomiolle keskustelujen keskittyessä Lounais-Suomesta ja Karjalasta tulleeseen talonpoikaisvaikutukseen.

Variations on the Bildungsroman in Contemporary Nigerian Literature

Courtois, Cédric 20 September 2019 (has links)
Since the beginning of the 2000s, one of the distinctive features of Nigerian literature has been the use of the literary genre of the Bildungsroman . This thesis considers the different evolutions of this genre among male and female third-generation Nigerian novelists. It examines more than twenty novels, from Waiting for an Angel (2002) by Helon Habila to Freshwater (2018) by Akwaeke Emezi, thereby providing a picture of contemporary Nigerian fiction. This study aims at analysing contemporary Nigerian fiction through the genre of the Bildungsroman. By using gender theory, it considers the feminine variations on an androcentric genre. These feminine rewritings put forth the development (or lack thereof) of the heroines from an individual viewpoint as they try to build a unified self. The allegorical tendency of the traditional Bildungsroman is also central, and the History of the Nigerian nation, from the civil war (or Biafra war, 1967-1970), to the beginning of the 2000s, is at the heart of the plots woven by the novels chosen in the corpus: the Bildung of the protagonist parallels the Bildung of the nation. Finally, in the 21st century, national borders do not seem to hold any longer for the third-generation writers who, because they experience mobility themselves, describe the new conditions of development in a globalized society, which is increasingly multicultural or transcultural; borders (whether they be geographical, linked to identity, or generic) tend to fade away, or disappear. This thesis examines whether or not a Nigerian specificity of the Bildungsroman exists in the 21st century.
