This research explores the relations between the urban form and security. It is based theoretical and conceptual on studies that relate environment and behavior, according to which the physical-spatial attributes of the built environment can create opportunities or difficulties the occurrence of crime and influence the perception of security. Aims to analyze the influence of physical-spatial aspects of the built environment on the spatial distribution of crime and the perception of security in residential areas with gated communities. As gathering and data analysis methods are used physical measurements and questionnaires, statistical analysis and space syntax techniques. The main results confirm the effect of certain characteristics of urban spaces, related to accessibility and natural surveillance, on the occurrence of theft and robbery on the street and in homes. Findings allow us to infer the negative impact produced by the presence of continuous physical and visual barriers to security, both inside the home and in public open spaces.

Previous issue date: 2017-08-29 / The city of Goiania, created in 1930’s decade to be Goias new capital, is inserted in a modern cities context, which design prized the rationality of the road system, urban zoning and green areas. However, the urban expansion control did not follow the ideals sought in its construction. The city developed in a sparse way potentialized in the 1960s by the construction of numerous housing complexes in its urban peripheries. These complexes also contributed to the diversity of urban forms present in the new capital. Its paradigmatic plans show the growing design culture in the city, also originated by the immigration of several professionals from other Brazilian capitals. Still, the form of these hounsing complexes were idealized by its urban quality, but your peripheral implantation, without proper infrastructure and isolated from the urban center influenced in an incisive way the post-occupation. The Vila Itatiaia is an example of this, whose project designed by Grupo Quatro Arquitetura in the 1970’s privileged its system of green areas and the public and private spaces joint. The project sought to provide an environmental quality through the houses and nature conection, and broad public spaces for social practices. Athough, the pubic management neglect with these areas generated different appropriation processes by their residents. This research proposes the analysis of the transformation process in Vila Itatiaia’s public spaces, from the perpective of the social practices, and the influence of its urban morphology. It is also the purpose understand the mechanisms used by their residents to restructure this urban space in question. With this, the analysis developed through two approaches, the analysis of physical aspects and the social aspects, those are subjective order and come from the ethnographic method, in order to experience the territory and select the most significant forms of appropriation in its public spaces. Reinforcing the nexus between the project and the construction of the inhabited space, the research brings the opportunity to understand the territorial occupation process through social housing, as well as to produce data to guide future investigations or intervention projects in the area.

A forma urbana do centro de Boa Vista/RR a partir das influências do primeiro plano urbanístico / The urban form of the center of Boa Vista/RR from the influences of the first urban planFelipe Melo de Souza 17 September 2015 (has links)
This paper aims to point out the relationship between the occupation of the territory and urban form by the case study of Darcy Aleixo Derenusson Urban Plan deployed in 1943 in the city of Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima, Brazil. They are discussed the process of implementation of the Plan; the origins of the implanted radio concentric urban form and the context of the main references in the urban history and the period of its implementation in Brazil; as well as the limits and possibilities of urban expansion from the relationship between the occupation of the territory and urban form. It is used a methodology guided by literature from the perspectives of geography, architecture and urbanism; information retrieval; case study analyzed from methods and techniques related to the image of the city and the study of urban morphology and analysis of the use and occupation of the soil. Raise that in city planning history Darcy Aleixo Derenusson Urban Plan is inserted in a context of global and Brazilian urbanism that was used radio concentric urban form and where the relationship between urban intervention and expression of power was present. The analysis of the relationship between urban form and occupation of the territory showed that the nature of the territory in which way radio concentric was deployed committed to urban expansion of the city of Boa Vista, generating environmental and urban mobility problems, imposing limits on the expansion of the urban mesh. It indicates the need for urban planning and management guided by legal instruments and their effective applicability to manage the territory considering

Araguari: o sistema de espaços livres na forma urbana / Araguari: a system of open spaces in the urban formLucas Martins de Oliveira 04 February 2016 (has links)
The research analyzes the city of Araguari, located in the region of Triângulo Mineiro, Minas Gerais, from the process of your open spaces system configuration. It presents the socio-spatial process constitution, based on a bailout of the urban form evolution and the physical and economic determinants that have shaped. Assesses the management of the urban landscape, its current agents of production, and the open spaces system urbanity in two scales, the urban sprawl and the landscape units, guided by four aspects: adequacy, density, centrality and connectivity. It was observed that the open spaces quality much differs in different landscape units, either in qualitative aspects or distribution, showing a clear center-periphery disparity. However, it\'s possible give the city a urbanity increased from the recognition and appreciation of your open spaces system, both in the consolidated city, as the new developments.

This work is a contribution to the environmental assessment of urban development projects in the upstream design phase. It focuses on integrating urban morphology issues with life cycle analysis (LCA) applied to the built environment at the neighborhood scale. The energy performance of buildings is partly determined by design choices relating to the urban form and its interactions with climate. The objective of this thesis is to provide to the design teams a way to take into account the influence of the urban form on the energy potentials of a neighborhood with a life cycle perspective.A preliminary study was conducted on two neighborhoods to detail the influence of the urban form on their energy potentials. An approach to modeling the embodied energy and embodied carbon of buildings is proposed. A sensitivity analysis and a contribution analysis of this model are performed on two generic building shapes. The results demonstrate the key influence of the shape of the buildings and a very strong link between the embodied energy and the building’s compactness. An approach to assessing the passive heating potential and passive summer comfort potential at the neighborhood scale is also developed. It is based on the transformation of a neighborhood in an equivalent urban form (regular array of block buildings), and on the application of metamodels of a thermal simulation engine. The method is tested and discussed on a corpus of 45 case studies. These methodological developments are intended to be integrated into an existing tool for neighborhood LCA (NEST).

The spreading of projects of concentric roads. Multiple versions of a generic urban form in Brussels, Geneva and Reykjavík (1781-1935).Lelarge, Astrid 30 September 2016 (has links)

More than half of the world population lives in cities and this proportion is increasing. In order to welcome new populations avoiding urban sprawl, to make our existing cities more sustainable, besides generating new facilities and making changes, the use of current facilities should be more efficient as well. To satisfy these goals, new opportunities have to be found to strengthen the urban sustainability. The multifunctionality of urban spaces might be an efficient concept to (re)design cities and to propose new urban planning rules. The aim of our research is studying the possibilities of reviving public, semi-public and private spaces, for functions other than their main destination and during their idle hours, to consider them as multi-functional shared urban spaces. Different types of relation between function(s) of space and time have been studied. It has been tried to clarify the definition of “multifunctional space” in architecture and urban design based on definitions of the concepts in agriculture and landscape. About 80 cases have been analyzed which are spontaneously used as a multifunctional space or which have the potential to be one. 30 criteria have been selected for studying and analyzing multifunctional urban spaces. The final result is the criteria recommended to take into account while transforming a mono-functional space to a multifunctional one. These criteria would lead us to the information that must be gathered in order to create a GIS data-base customized for this purpose. This research is concluded with a discussion of the capacities of GIS software in the way to improve the operation of an urban space through the multifunctionality.

(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the relationship between spatial characteristics of cities and the resilience in urban mobility, considering the different sizes of the municipalities, in a study applied to the state of São Paulo. To achieve this objective, we proposed the development of a method for assessing the resilience in urban mobility considering non-motorized trips (walking and cycling), using the Statistical Grid of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics as an innovation. In general, for walking, we observed that around 46% of the municipalities would be totally resilient, and this proportion corresponds to the smaller municipalities. On the other hand, the municipalities that show a lower resilience comprise approximately 11% of the total and are characterized by the largest and most populous municipalities in the state. For cycling the situation is different. We noted that only the municipalities of São Paulo and Ilhabela present a low resilience rate. In addition, we observed that 91% of the municipalities are totally resilient to this travel mode. In turn, we sought to establish a relationship between this resilience with spatial metrics of the cities through urban form indexes: Density, Concentration, Clustering and Centrality. Thus, we concluded that the household density is the parameter that stands out the most, since the larger the size of the municipality, the higher the value for this metric. For the other metrics (Concentration, Cl... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

URBAN SEGREGATION AND URBAN FORM : From residential segregation to segregation in public spaceLegeby, Ann January 2010 (has links)
Urban segregation is considered a major social problem in Sweden and several national anti-segregation initiatives have been launched to decrease social and ethnic segregation but so far only with marginal effects (SOU 2005:29). Urban design and town planning are rarely the focus in national anti-segregation initiatives; the architectural issue has mainly been confined to matters concerning housing policies. This thesis argues that the strong focus on residential segregation in prevailing research on urban segregation is unfortunate and skewed, confusing issues related to urban design. This licentiate thesis explores urban segregation in relation to urban form because physical separation between people or between activities has an obvious direct relationship to how cities are shaped and structured by built form. Urban public space is often neglected in discussions on segregation and this thesis suggests that its role has been underrated. If it can be shown that segregation in public space influences such aspects of life as accessibility to other people and amenities, movement flows, co-presence in public space, and movement patterns, then it can be established that urban public space – as it is structured and shaped by built form – very directly influences people’s everyday lives. The thesis explores how urban segregation can be conceptualized, analysed, and described in a way that increases knowledge and understanding regarding the role of urban form. Using a configurational morphological approach, this study shifts the focus by bringing attention to spatial relations within the city through public space, i.e., from spatial location to spatial relations. Hence, analysis focuses on distributions of space and through space rather than distributions in space. The result shows that configurational theories, methods, and tools contribute to more nuanced descriptions of spatial relations on both a local and a comprehensive level and analysis has the ability to shed light on essential differences in neighbourhoods and in the city as a whole. Using Södertälje as a case study, this thesis found a pronounced ruptured interface between the global and the local structure that clearly speaks of segregation in public space; this finding suggests that whether the neighbourhoods are residentially segregated or not, public space in most areas already is segregated. Results show that the built environment has a significant influence: urban space can both reinforce and mitigate certain social outcomes. This thesis identifies various negative social consequences of the hierarchical and segregated spatial structure found in Södertälje. Although it is not possible to say that integration processes are hindered by urban form, it is possible to conclude that spatial properties may both create and reproduce segregation patterns.Segregation in public space is found to be a far more urgent issue in the context of urban segregation than earlier recognised, and the result shows that urban form has a distinguishable influence on people’s everyday lives. This understanding opens for the possibility to address urban segregation from an urban design perspective, contributing to a significant discussion of space and society as well as issues related to urban sustainability. The findings of this study widen the possibility for urban design practice to be an important tool within anti-segregation initiatives in the future, a tool that in Sweden is used only to a very limited extent. / <p>QC 20101109</p>

Public space contact in the Södra station area : A place for public life / Offentlig närvaro i Södra stationsområdet : En stadsdel för offentligt livBäckstedt, Linda Sofi January 2014 (has links)
Södra station area is a central neigbourhood at Södermalm, that was planned and built during the 1980s. During that time it was one of the largest postmodern urban planning projects in Stockholm. The intent was to imitate the urban pattern of the central parts of Stockholm with its mixed-use diversity, hence to “promote a rich social life” (Idétävling omSödra stationsområdet 1980, 4). This project investigates the urban form of the Södrastation area, focusing on the interface between public and private space, and proposing new urban features and land-use programs to further support and encourage public life in a central part of Södermalm. Observation of the area and refernance research show that the urban form of the Södra station area deviates form its surroundings and has low support towards its public spaces. How may the streets and the public spaces of the area be enliven?
