This thesis organizes a historical interpretation of the work of two important names of Brazilian musical experience, namely: Chico Buarque de Hollanda and Paulinho da Viola. The critical procedure adopted organizes a periodization of the works of particular musicians, recognized in a more generally context of works. From this, it undertakes to understand the historical meaning of these works in the epochal context. In view of the definition of such a context, one appealed to the criticism of the concept of MPB” (Brazilian Popular Music), coming to the conclusion that this notion is a sham conceptual. Therefore, it was necessary to evaluate the critical benchmarks that treat the historical dynamics of Brazilian music experience. To the analysis, one worked with the evaluation of the musical project of Mario de Andrade, recognizing Bossa Nova as a contradictory split of utopia of national sound of the modernist. Then, in view of consolidating concepts and categories on the Brazilian musical experience, taking into account the assumption of historical materialist analysis based on aesthetic mediation, one organized the interpretation of critical methods of José Ramos Tinhorão and José Miguel Wisnik. In them, it was recognized not only the strengthening of certain theoretical and methodological references, but the resonance of problems whose initial crystallization is in the very musical experience studied. In possession of critical categories previously consolidated, it shows the early works of Chico Buarque and Paulinho da Viola as a maturation period of antinomies aesthetic that sediment objective elements of Brazilian social and political structure in forms of the song language... This research analyzes the symbolic function and the symbolic games ([1945]) at the thought of Piaget and the improvisational games of Viola Spolin ([1963]). From this perspective, establish dialogues in their entertainment and educational way and shows how the knowledge of these symbolic characteristics and the intuitive knowledge can influence the driving proposals for theater education in public schools with children. This dissertation departs from the meaning established by the relationship between meaning/significant with the intuitive intelligence, which are elements presents in the theatrical play.

Dubuisson: A Study of His Music for Solo Bass Viol

Cheney, Stuart 12 1900 (has links)
Dubuisson (fl.1666-c.1685) is the sole French viol player-composer between Nicolas Hotman (1613-1663) and Le Sieur de Sainte-Colombe (d.c.1700) whose works are extant. His four suites from a Library of Congress manuscript (1666) are the oldest dated French music for the bass viol; his approximately 125 pieces are contained in five manuscript sources. This thesis brings together, for the first time, all the music from the five sources for study and analysis. Together with the few biographical details, this material is used to assess his position within the French viol school. Brief histories of the viol and the suite in France precede a discussion of Dubuisson's contributions to the evolution of the genre.

A Comparison of Aural and Visual Instructional Methodologies Designed to Improve the Intonation Accuracy of Seventh Grade Violin and Viola Instrumentalists.

Núñez, Mario Leoncio 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to compare two instructional methodologies designed to improve the intonation accuracy of seventh grade violin and viola instrumentalists. The collection of data was in regard to (1) instructional methodology: aural and aural/visual, (2) performance tasks: A, B, and C; (3) individual pitches (seven from each of the music tasks), and (4) differences between instrument groups: violin and viola. Sixty-eight seventh grade string students from three string classes of two middle schools were randomly assigned to two experimental groups: (a) aural and (b) aural/visual. The instructional period was implemented daily in ten-minute sessions during twenty days by the orchestra instructors of each school. A pretest-posttest format was used to determine if there were any changes in the subjects' intonation accuracy from prior to after the instructional phase was implemented, and if these changes could be attributed to any of the methodologies. The testing material used on both testing sessions included three performance tasks composed of seven notes each. Subjects were recorded on both testing occasions. The data were the scores of absolute pitch deviation, measured in cents from equal temperament, from the pre- and postest; these were treated with analysis of variance. The ANOVA on the posttest scores indicated a non-significant difference between the instructional methodologies in their effectiveness to improve the subjects' ability to play in tune.

Cyclotides evolve : Studies on their natural distribution, structural diversity, and activity

Park, Sungkyu January 2016 (has links)
The cyclotides are a family of naturally occurring peptides characterized by cyclic cystine knot (CCK) structural motif, which comprises a cyclic head-to-tail backbone featuring six conserved cysteine residues that form three disulfide bonds. This unique structural motif makes cyclotides exceptionally resistant to chemical, thermal and enzymatic degradation. They also exhibit a wide range of biological activities including insecticidal, cytotoxic, anti-HIV and antimicrobial effects. The cyclotides found in plants exhibit considerable sequence and structural diversity, which can be linked to their evolutionary history and that of their host plants. To clarify the evolutionary link between sequence diversity and the distribution of individual cyclotides across the genus Viola, selected known cyclotides were classified using signature sequences within their precursor proteins. By mapping the classified sequences onto the phylogenetic system of Viola, we traced the flow of cyclotide genes over evolutionary history and were able to estimate the prevalence of cyclotides in this genus. In addition, the structural diversity of the cyclotides was related to specific features of the sequences of their precursor proteins, their evolutionary selection and expression levels. A number of studies have suggested that the biological activities of the cyclotides are due to their ability to interact with and disrupt biological membranes. To better explain this behavior, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models were developed to link the cyclotides’ biological activities to the membrane-interactive physicochemical properties of their molecular surfaces. Both scalar quantities (such as molecular surface areas) and moments (such as the distributions of specific properties over the molecular surface) were systematically taken into account in the development of these models. This approach allows the physicochemical properties of cyclotides to be geometrically interpreted, facilitating the development of guidelines for drug design using cyclotide scaffolds. Finally, an optimized microwave-assisted Fmoc-SPSS procedure for the total synthesis of cyclotides was developed. Microwave irradiation is used to accelerate and improve all the key steps in cyclotide synthesis, including the assembly of the peptide backbone by Fmoc-SPPS, the cleavage of the protected peptide, and the introduction of a thioester at the C-terminal carboxylic acid to obtain the head-to-tail cyclized cyclotide backbone by native chemical ligation.

A portfolio of compositions presented for the degree of PhD in music composition at the University of Aberdeen

Willson, Simon January 2009 (has links)
This portfolio presents seven compositions composed for different instrumental and vocal forces, accompanied by a commentary and recordings of some of these works. Across the seven pieces there has been a concern with building longer-term structures; establishing a stronger developmental style; and with moving towards a more systematised approach to harmony as a way of creating a harmonic language that can underpin development more efficiently.  Several of the works show a direct engagement with the issue of form, which is approached from the perspective of Classical models, the listener’s perception and in the context of a highly chromatic harmonic language.  In contrast, two works (<i>Aubade</i> and <i>So Turn Your Heart</i>) engage more directly with diatonic models of harmony. The dominant concern across all the works presented has been the desire to create developmental, direct music in which the notion of transformation, rather than stasis and ritual, are of paramount importance.  From a melodic, harmonic and structural point of view each work represents different ways in which this has been attempted. The commentary that accompanies the works explores many of these ideas in more detail as well as setting out the origins and development of each composition. There is also an explanation as to how the initial material was decided upon and utilised during the compositional process. The commentary then concludes with a summary of what has been achieved over the course of the programme and where this might lead in the future.

Ramírez Mellado, Maximiliano January 2014 (has links)
