Barth, Stefanie 31 March 2022 (has links)

Teachers' attitudes and (low achieving) learners' engagement in learning.

Buys, Estelle Priscilla 08 May 2015 (has links)
Education has undergone much change in post-apartheid South Africa. New school policies and curricula are some of the changes that have impacted education in significant ways. An important consequence of all this is that classrooms have become more racially mixed and/or culturally diverse. Teachers have also had to adjust to the changes in their classrooms not only in pedagogic terms, but also in terms of perceptions of learners and more importantly, their attitudes towards learners. The study was conducted at three Co Ed schools in the Gauteng South district. The schools are all situated in Eldorado Park. The aim of the research was to investigate ways in which teachers’ attitudes, as perceived by learners, affect learners’ engagement in their own learning. A case study methodology within the qualitative paradigm was employed. Data was collected through learner focus group interviews. The main research question was: In what pedagogical ways, as perceived by high and low achieving learners, do teachers transmit attitudes of care, trust and expectations to learners. The findings indicated that there are differences in learners’ perceptions and experiences of teachers’ pedagogical ways, particularly with regard to low achieving learners. Moreover, the low achieving learners had significantly different, mainly negative, experiences of pedagogical ways. The study concluded that in order for learning to be facilitated, certain pedagogical means/ways are required to transmit attitudes of care, trust and expectations. This study suggests that there is room for further research in this field.

The Challenges of Achieving Work-Life Balance in the Digital Age: A Study of Young Professionals : Exploring the Impact of New Ways of Working on Early Career Adults

Ljungkvist, Hugo, Moore, Marcus January 2023 (has links)
Technological advancements have paved the way for flexible working arrangements across offices globally. This has fundamentally changed the notion of how work should be conducted, causing new opportunities and challenges to arise. Traditional boundaries and status quo are being challenged by the demands of future generations entering the workforce, situating young professionals in previously unexplored situations. The physical boundaries that used to separate work from personal space are now being blurred as a result of the increased technological connectedness. This paired with the lack of organisational understanding of how flexible work arrangements influence employees' ability to achieve work-life, balance puts young professionals at an elevated risk of experiencing setbacks. Existing research into work-life balance has mainly been situated regarding the concerns of conventional families, where marriage and parenting commonly are the focus. Young professionals are inherently different to previous generations, causing them to face completely unique challenges that this research project aims at exploring. This research adopted a qualitative data collection method through a purposive sampling technique. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with Swedish young professionals in various industries obtaining white-collar jobs. The data sets were analysed using grounded theory to generate aggregated dimensions leading to the results and subsequent conclusions of this research project. The key findings of this study highlight several challenges that affect young professionals' ability to achieve a functioning work-life balance. Flexible work arrangements strongly influence both physical and mental aspects of employee well-being through the lack of stimulating social interactions. Moreover, external, and internal pressure causes traditional boundaries between personal and professional life to blur, thus complicating their ability to achieve work-life balance. Lastly, the results highlight young professionals’ lack of professional experience as an influential variable both in terms of what they value and in their (in)ability to harmonise the different spheres of personal and professional life. The findings contribute to the current discussion about work-life balance by situating the research in a Swedish context of young professionals. They largely confirm and expand upon connections between flexible work arrangements and work-life balance challenges associated with them. Organisations, individuals, and legislators all benefit from our findings emphasising the wants and needs of future generations entering the labour market longing for work-life balance.

Copingstrategier hos anhöriga till personer med Alzheimers sjukdom : En empririsk studie av självbiografier / Coping strategies among next of kin to a person with Alzheimers disease : An empirical study of autobiographies

Rosén Hagert, Frida, Borg, Othilia January 2016 (has links)
Background: With Alzheimer's disease comes many changes that affect not only the affected but also their families. These changes are managed using a variety of coping strategies. Aim: To describe coping strategies among informal caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease. Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative study with a deductive approach, where the data is collected from autobiographies. The data was analyzed and sorted with help from the instrument "Ways of Coping". Result: The caregivers of the study used coping strategies such as, for example, putting the foot down (confrontive coping), blame others (distancing), hiding emotions (self-controlling) and help and support from the surroundings (seeking social support), to blame oneself (accepting responsibility), distracting thoughts and activities (escape-avoidance), information seeking (planful problem solving) and positive personal change (positive reappraisal). Conclusion: Knowledge of coping strategies among health care workers could help families in their role as caregivers of the person with Alzheimer's disease.

Laurila, Lisa January 2019 (has links)
The separation between Judaism and Christianity is a subject which a large number of scholars within the study of religion have invested time and effort in. The field can surely be described as massive, and to figure out what has been said and done, and why so, is perhaps not the simplest of tasks. Here, however, an attempt to do so has been made in order to try and debone parts of a very large fish and se what it actually consists of. In what terms have some of the prominent scholars within the field described the separation between the two religions which have been considered to, at one point, be the one and same? By using a textual discourse analysis method, the aim for this thesis is to map some of the currents which have been dominant in the field of said separation and to seek the explanations behind them.

Workplaces of the Future : - Guidelines for an Implementation of Activity Based Workplaces / Framtidens arbetsplatser : - Riktlinjer för en implementering av Aktivitetsbaserade Arbetsplatser

Bouvier, Christian, Eriksson, Jakob January 2014 (has links)
Activity Based Workplaces (ABW) is the latest trend within the office layout for knowledge workers. The design and layout of an activity based workplace is based on the worker's need to carry out different tasks, in the most efficient way. In order to achieve that the office is divided into different zones and the workers doesn't have a private work-station. The biggest advantage with ABW is a space efficient working environment that promotes knowledge- and information sharing within the company’s different departments. The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate how to implement Activity Based Workplaces in an efficient way. In order to do that a literature review on existing research and a qualitative study have been carried out. The qualitative study is based on interviews with key persons at five different companies that have implemented ABW or had the intention to do so. The transition to ABW have been studied in three different blocks; the decision process, the implementation process and the outcome and user perspective. The analysis of the results from the qualitative study shows that the transition includes a lot of different challenges. One of the biggest challenge that the management has to overcome is to assure the co-workers that the implementation of an Activity Based Workplace will bring positive effects to the company. In order to achieve that it is important that the management acquires the right knowledge to successfully handle the implementation and is able to create a clear strategy of how to do so. During the process it is important to involve the co-workers in order to identify their needs. After all it is the co-workers who carry out the activities that the workplace is supposed to support. The involvement of the co-workers will also create a more positive attitude towards the concept of ABW. After the implementation of the Activity Based Workplace the challenge lies within the ability to constantly adapt and develop the office space after the changing needs of the company and its co-workers. The co-workers changing needs are hard to identify in advance, therefore it is important to adapt the workplace when these needs are identified. The demand for space efficient offices will grow in the future and in comparison to a traditional office space layout, we believe the Activity Based Workplace allows for a workplace better suited for the needs of the company and its co-workers.

Preservice Mathematics Teachers’ Conceptions of Radian Angle Measure

Hanan Alyami (12970001) 28 June 2022 (has links)

Radian angle measure is central to learning trigonometry, with researchers providing evidence that a coherent understanding of radian contributes to a coherent understanding of trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions. However, there are few opportunities for students to engage with curricular situations that involve radian angle measure. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore and provide insights into preservice mathematics teachers’ (PMTs’) conceptions of radian angle measure using three curricular situations. The first chapter reviews the relevant literature, which reported that PMTs’ conceptions of radian angle measure involve angles measured in terms of π, in relation to degrees, and in relation to the unit circle. In chapter two, I explored PMTs’ conceptions of radian angle measure using textbook representations. Seven PMTs participated in a think-aloud semi-structured interviews, where they defined radian angle measure from six textbook diagrams of radian, including a diagram of the unit circle. In chapter three, building on literature that reported that PMTs’ conceptions of radian angle measure involve relating radian to degrees, I explored how PMTs conceptualize this relationship. Five PMTs participated in semi-structured interviews, where they described radian angle measure given the angle measure in degrees. In chapter four, I explored the PMTs’ conceptions of radian angle measure given a novel context. Four PMTs participated in semi-structured virtual interviews, where they engaged with a digital activity that involves radian angle measure in the context of light reflection. Some of the dissertation’s findings align with previous research, where PMTs’ conceptualized radian angle measure in relation to the unit circle. However, this dissertation provides empirical evidence of why the PMTs refer to the unit circle. The PMTs acknowledged knowing the unit circle from memorization, but also explained that the purpose for using the unit circle is efficiency. At the same time, the PMTs acknowledged limitations in the unit circle and in their conceptions of it. Overall findings from the dissertation demonstrate the complexity of PMTs’ conceptions of radian angle measure. The PMTs’ conceptions were reported as concept definitions, ways of thinking, and spatial ways of thinking. The PMTs demonstrated flexibility with reasoning about radian angle measure using foundational conceptions in learning higher mathematics topics (e.g., proportional reasoning concepts, spatial ways of thinking). By positioning the PMTs as knowers and thinkers with valuable insights to provide, I was able to uncover and report a collection of conceptions that were demonstrated by PMTs when a curricular situation involved radian angle measure. The findings from this dissertation extend existing research that explored conceptions of angle measure and radian angle measure by reporting PMTs’ conceptions of radian angle measure given three different curricular situations. While there is still much that needs to be investigated about complexities in PMTs’ conceptions of radian angle measure, this dissertation represents one step toward providing insights about those complexities.

The social life and sound patterns of Nanti ways of speaking

Beier, Christine Marie 19 October 2010 (has links)
This dissertation explores the phenomenon of ways of speaking in the Nanti speech community of Montetoni, in southeastern Peruvian Amazonia, between 1999 and 2009. In the context of this study, a 'way of speaking' is a socially meaningful, conventionalized sound pattern, manifest at the level of the utterance, that expresses the speaker's orientation toward some aspect of the interaction. This study closely examines both the sound patterns and patterns of use of three Nanti ways of speaking — matter-of-fact talk, scolding talk, and hunting talk — and describes each one in relation to a broader set of linguistic, social, and cultural practices characteristic of the speech community at the time. The data for this study is naturally-occurring discourse recorded during multi-party, face-to-face interactions in Montetoni. Bringing together methods developed by linguists, linguistic anthropologists, conversation analysts, and interactional sociologists, this study explores the communicative relations among participants, interactions, situations of interaction, and the utterances that link them all, attending to both the individual-level cognitive (subjective) facets of interpersonal communication and the necessarily intersubjective environment in which communication takes place. In order to disaggregate the multiple levels of signification evidenced in specific utterances, tokens are examined at four levels of organization: the sound form, the sentence, the turn, and the move. The data are presented via audio files; acoustic analyses; sequentially-organized and temporally-anchored interlinearized transcripts; and composite visual representations, all of which are framed by detailed ethnographic description. Nantis' ways of speaking are shown to consistently and systematically convey social aspects of 'meaning' that are crucial to utterance interpretation and, therefore, to successful interpersonal communication. Based on the robust correspondences between sound form and communicative function identified in the Nanti communicative system, this study proposes that ways of speaking are a cross-linguistically viable level of organization in language use that awaits discovery and description in other speech communities. The research project itself is framed in terms of the practical issues that emerged through the author's own experiences in learning to communicate appropriately in monolingual Nanti society, and the ethical issues that motivate community-oriented documentation of endangered language practices. / text
