Structure and sense : a study of organization based on the theories of Weick and JaquesThelejane, Molupe 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Informations Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT:
Karl E. Weick’s Theory of Organizational Sensemaking and Elliot Jaques’ Stratified
Systems Theory are not often deemed to be complimentary. The generally accepted
view is that these two positions represent two poles on a spectrum of organization
theory. The thesis attempts to bring these two theories in conversation with one
another and argues that organizational sensemaking is enriched in a requisitely
structured organization.
The essence of stratified systems theory is that all humans have an inherent cognitive
potential level of coping with complexity. As people mature they gain the potential to
handle the next level complexity jobs. Similarly, jobs have a certain span within
which they can or should be successfully mastered. In organizations one can then
identify different strata, according to job complexity. A requisitely structured
organization uses strata to create a managerial hierarchy. Jaques argues that a
hierarchy is not repressive if applied requisitely as people will naturally be drawn to
jobs in the strata where they are most effective.
Sensemaking on the other hand, is the cognitive ability to impose frames on ongoing
flows and so make the world sensible. Normally it is an automatic process, but in
organizations the sense made is often fragile and under threat. Sensemaking and
management are two mutually interacting activities that influence each other
constantly.
The type of frame imposed on an object, the interpretation given to events, the
plausibility of explanations forwarded and the contextualization of circumstances is
dependent on one’s applied cognitive capabilities. It is argued that if there are no
discontinuites in cognitive capabilities and if the organization is requisitely structured
then sensemaking is enhanced. This argument serves as the bridge between
Sensemaking Theory and Stratified Systems Theory. Other links are in pertinent
properties that are common to both theories, for example, requisite variety, trust,
meetings and leadership, which are fundamental requirements in both theories. While
the theories are complementary, there remain some gray areas and some others of
contention and these are considered towards the end. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING:
spektrum is.
In
In
gestruktureerde organisasie singewing sal bevorder.

Sensemaking in communities of practiceFourie, Carina M. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / This thesis explores the notion of communities of practice, and in particular how they make
sense of their environment in order to create knowledge and enable learning. Traditionally
communities of practice are viewed as stewards of expert knowledge, but this thesis argues
that they are better understood as sensemaking phenomena.
Chapter one introduces the theory of sensemaking as developed by Karl Weick. This chapter
introduces the seven properties of sensemaking. It also explores organisational sensemaking
by taking the intersubjective and generic subjective levels of sensemaking into account.
Chapter two focuses on the literature on communities of practice as self-organising
knowledge structures. Three structural aspects of communities of this kind are introduced,
namely domain, community and practice. Following Etienne Wenger two additional aspects
of communities of practice—namely meaning and identity—are analyzed as these provide the
basis for a link to sensemaking theory. In the final part of this chapter the downside of
communities of practice is reviewed as they do not only present opportunities but also unique
challenges for organisations.
Chapter three combines the conclusions from the previous two chapters by interpreting
communities of practice from a sensemaking perspective. The seven properties of
sensemaking are applied to communities of practice and the role of meaning in communities
of practice is viewed through the lens of sensemaking. Furthermore the role communities of
practice might play in enhancing the phases of organisational sensemaking is indicated.
Chapter four concludes that communities of practice indeed function as sensemaking
phenomena in their environments. It is argued that nurturing communities of practice as
centres of sensemaking could be advantageous to organisations and recommendations are
made on how to best achieve this.

Organiseringsprocesser i ett popband : bakom kulisser och mellan människor / Processes of organizing in a pop bandMalm, Tobias January 2015 (has links)
There is a gap between thought and action in smaller organizations. Unawareness of its own activities has led to misleading explanations for both successful and unsuccessful organizing. This study therefore aims to develop knowledge and understanding of processes of organizing in smaller organizations and specifically in pop bands. The research design is a longitudinal case study of a pop band. The methodology was inspired by ethnography and has an abductive approach. The main source for data collection has been observation of chatting, however direct observations, interviews and a meeting of stimulated recall has also been conducted. The results show how the pop band is organized in projects and the importance of complexity and the collective sense that it can make. Analysis is based on Czarniawska's theory of organizing and Weick's theory of sensemaking. It is concluded that sustained and coherent processes of organizing are associated with processes of collective sensemaking. An endeavor for collective sense is an endeavor to realize the organization as a collective. The implications for well-functioning activities in smaller organizations proposed to be to endeavor for complexity by involving the most sensible projects according to all participants into one another, and to schedule meetings and to have multiple deadlines, and avoid authoritarian leadership, avoid competing buddy collective, avoid delegation and allocation of areas of responsibility and avoid the pursuit of a common view.

Time Bending: Temporal Malleability and Organizational Response in Crisis SituationsCarson, Gary W 26 March 2008 (has links)
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 created a crisis of epic proportions for the airline industry. The attacks, on the heels of the first financial losses in four years, threatened the existence of many airlines. It was incumbent on the CEO to make sense and offer a plan to control the crisis and move forward. There were fewer audiences more attentive to this senemaking activity than the stockholders. On the cusp of the organization, shareholder management is a central job of CEOs in the 21st century. This study focuses on CEO presentations to shareholders for American, Delta and Frontier Airlines before during and after the events of 9/11. Using Close Textual Analysis as configured by Michael Leff, the time focused rhetorical analysis is extended to include slices of time. How CEOs use experienced time and interpreted time to gain stockholder confidence, control the crisis and create a shared vision of the future is the goal of this project. A longitudinal study across the years of 2001-2003, this dissertation considers how the organizational, leadership and personal goals of each of these airlines and their leaders are met through rhetorical configurations of time.

Sensing and organising : an interpretation of the thought of Karel E. WeickJoubert, Carel W. T. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The focus in this thesis is on sensemaking in organisations and the aim was to offer an
interpretation of the thought of Karl E. Weick. The interpretation subsequently consists
of a description and discussion of concepts, underlying theories and paradigmatic
perspectives that are integrated into and deployed in Weick's sensemaking framework.
After a description and definition of sensemaking terms and concepts, it is argued that
a process cosmology forms the ground theory in Weick's sensemaking framework. In
order to elucidate this interpretation, the organic model of the world of Bergson and
Whitehead is introduced. Special attention is given to pragmatism's underlying process
ontology and themes which social consructionism, symbolic interactionism and
ethnomethodology share in common with pragmatism. The aim is to show how these
perspectives and themes are taken up in Weick's sensemaking in organisations and
organisational theory.
A failure to make sense is both consequential and existential. This aspect of Weick's
thought is discussed in the context of Bergson's process cosmology. It is followed by a
description and discussion of Weick's use of systems theory with special attention
given to Weick's concept of 'enactment' .
How and why does an organisation becomes what it becomes? This question is
addressed in the context of a description and discussion of complexity theory. A core
concept in both complexity theory and Weick's thought is self-organisation. The aim is
to show how sense making appears on systems level.
Finally, this thesis attempts to addresses the question of the relationship between
organisation and organising and how both terms is to be understood in terms of
Weick's ontological view of the world. This aim is to show that Weick's
understanding of "the" organisation (noun) can be conceived of as an abstraction and
organisation (verb - 'organising') in terms of relating and as process in becoming and
how he thereby gives social construction an ontological twist. The conclusion reached
is that, in the type of world Weick describes, it makes sense to make sense.
kompleksiteits-teorie. 'n Kern konsep in beide Weick se sensemaking en
kompleksiteits-teorie is self-organisasie.

Technoethics and Sensemaking: Risk Assessment and Knowledge Management of Ethical Hacking in a Sociotechnical SocietyAbu-Shaqra, Baha 17 April 2020 (has links)
Cyber attacks by domestic and foreign threat actors are increasing in frequency and sophistication. Cyber adversaries exploit a cybersecurity skill/knowledge gap and an open society, undermining the information security/privacy of citizens and businesses and eroding trust in governments, thus threatening social and political stability. The use of open digital hacking technologies in ethical hacking in higher education and within broader society raises ethical, technical, social, and political challenges for liberal democracies. Programs teaching ethical hacking in higher education are steadily growing but there is a concern that teaching students hacking skills increases crime risk to society by drawing students toward criminal acts. A cybersecurity skill gap undermines the security/viability of business and government institutions. The thesis presents an examination of opportunities and risks involved in using AI powered intelligence gathering/surveillance technologies in ethical hacking teaching practices in Canada. Taking a qualitative exploratory case study approach, technoethical inquiry theory (Bunge-Luppicini) and Weick’s sensemaking model were applied as a sociotechnical theory (STEI-KW) to explore ethical hacking teaching practices in two Canadian universities. In-depth interviews with ethical hacking university experts, industry practitioners, and policy experts, and a document review were conducted. Findings pointed to a skill/knowledge gap in ethical hacking literature regarding the meanings, ethics, values, skills/knowledge, roles and responsibilities, and practices of ethical hacking and ethical hackers which underlies an identity and legitimacy crisis for professional ethical hacking practitioners; and a Teaching vs Practice cybersecurity skill gap in ethical hacking curricula. Two main S&T innovation risk mitigation initiatives were explored: An OSINT Analyst cybersecurity role and associated body of knowledge foundation framework as an interdisciplinary research area, and a networked centre of excellence of ethical hacking communities of practice as a knowledge management and governance/policy innovation approach focusing on the systematization and standardization of an ethical hacking body of knowledge.
