Insite’ s evaluation results are undergoing debate, because two communicative spheres of knowledge, each with a unique authoritative language, are conflicting as each is attempting to gain moral authority over the right to recontextualize drug users. Drawing on a literature review of two harm reduction programs in Vancouver, Insite and Sheway, and expert interviews with evaluators, I show that what constitutes “evidence” is in fact subjective, determined by spheres of communicability that are built upon social, professional and political contexts. To confront the problematic nature of this issue, I suggest that evaluators and overseers need to treat program evaluation as a process of negotiation, best approached in a fluid manner. By obscuring multiple user experiences in the evaluation of harm reduction programs, evaluators and overseers risk imposing their communicative ideologies on what it means to be a drug user.

Kommunikation genom visuella representationer utgör ett kraftfullt verktyg för att skapa hållbar kod, vilket motverkar teknisk skuld. Förståelse, samsyn och de visuella representationernas utformning är avgörande för att nyttja verktygets fulla potential. Forskning kring visuella representationer, som kommunikationsmedel och dess effekter inom systemutveckling, är begränsad. I studien undersöktes samsyn kring visuella representationer som en delinsats mot teknisk skuld, där datainsamling och analys utformades med stöd av  ramverket Directives of Communicability. Yrkesrollerna utvecklare, teknisk ledare och arkitekt inom organisationen Svenska Spel deltog i en fallstudie, där resultatet visar att det till stor del finns en generell samsyn kring visuella representationer. Brister framkom mellan skapare och mottagare, vilket resulterade i råd kring standardisering. Studien visar även på brister som inte ryms i ramverket Directives of Communicability, vilket resulterade i Kontext och syfte, samt Uppdelning och dokumentstruktur som förslag på komplement till ramverkets grundsatser. Ramverkets praktiska definition av skapare och mottagare som två skilda entiteter, visar sig vara svårapplicerat i en verklig kontext och ytterligare studier kring ramverket vore värdefull för vidare forskning kring problemområdet. / Communication through visual representations constitutes a powerful tool in creating sustainable code, thus mitigating technical debt. Understanding, consensus, and design aspects are crucial in order to achieve this tool's full potential. Research on communication through visual representations and its effects on system development is limited. The study examined mutual understanding regarding visual representations as a means of reducing technical debt. The data collection and analysis were designed with guidance from the framework, Directives of Communicability. The roles of developer, technical leader, and architect within the organization, Svenska Spel, participated in a case study, where the results largely indicate a general mutual understanding regarding visual representations. Deficiencies emerged in the interactions between producer and consumer, resulting in recommendations for standardization. The study also identified deficiencies which fall outside of the Directives of Communicability, resulting in the complementary principles, Context and Purpose, as well as Division and Document Structure, being proposed to the framework. The framework's strict definition of producers and consumers as two distinct entities proves difficult to apply in a real-world context, and further research on the framework would be valuable for the problem domain.

O trabalho que ora apresentamos é o resultado das investigações em torno da fundamentação comunicacional do projeto artístico-teórico proposto por Hans-Joachim Koellreutter (1915-2005) sob a legenda de música viva. Comprometimento levado a termo por meio da análise imanente do conjunto fragmentário de seus textos produzido no período de ação do Grupo Música Viva (1939-1954) e veiculados nos meios de divulgação e crítica cultural da época. / The work we now present argues about the researches results around the communicational foundings from the artistic-theoretical project planned by Hans-Joachim Koellreutter (1915-2005) under the label alive music. An undertaking densified through the immanent analysis of the fragmentary assemble from his writings produced during the Alive Music Groups action period (1939-1954) and broadcasted by its contemporary means and cultural critics.

[pt] O design da interação vem sendo finalmente reconhecido como um fator fundamental para a maior aceitação e utilização eficaz de aplicações e sistemas computacionais. Aplicações que fazem uso de ambientes virtuais (AV) vêm sendo desenvolvidas em número crescente e com finalidades cada vez mais diversas e inovadoras. Entretanto, o conhecimento sobre design e avaliação da interação com aplicações em AVs ainda é recente e carente de métodos e técnicas bem estabelecidas. O foco deste estudo é a avaliação da comunicabilidade e da usabilidade da HybridDesk, um equipamento projetado para interação com AVs e que possui três ambientes de interação distintos. O método de avaliação de comunicabilidade (MAC), desenvolvido com base na engenharia semiótica, é um método recente e inovador, fazendo uma avaliação qualitativa com foco na recepção pelo usuário, em tempo de interação, da mensagem de metacomunicação do designer, buscando identificar questões de comunicabilidade e elaborar o perfil semiótico da metacomunicação. Existem diversos métodos para avaliação de usabilidade, tanto qualitativos como quantitativos, alguns inclusive já aplicados na avaliação de AVs. Este estudo aplica alguns desses métodos, privilegiando uma avaliação qualitativa, embora inclua também resultados quantitativos. Inclui uma avaliação heurística bem como sessões de observação de uso com foco na percepção da interação pelos usuários, buscando identificar questões de IHC em ambientes virtuais híbridos. Este estudo faz também uma comparação dos resultados da aplicação dos diversos métodos, mostrando que todos contribuíram de alguma forma distinta para o resultado da avaliação da HybridDesk. Os resultados também destacam e reforçam a importância de alguns aspectos da interação, como a compatibilidade dos diversos sistemas de significação envolvidos na interação, e a necessidade de se buscar a integração das tarefas 1D, 2D e 3D de forma imperceptível para o usuário. / [en] Interaction design has been finally recognized as a key factor for a broader acceptance and the effective utilization of applications and systems. Virtual environment (VE) applications are being developed in growing numbers and aiming to fulfill even more diverse and innovative needs. But the knowledge about interaction design and evaluation of VE applications is still recent and lacks well established methods and techniques. The focus of this study is the communicability and usability evaluation of the HybridDesk, an equipment designed for the interaction with VEs that includes three different interaction environments. The communicability evaluation method (CEM), based on the semiotic engineering, is an innovative and recent method, performing a qualitative evaluation focused in the reception by the user of the designer metacommunication message, at user interaction time, aiming to identify communicability issues and to produce the semiotic profiling of the metacommunication. There are several usability evaluation methods, both qualitative and quantitative, including some already applied to VEs. This study has applied some of these methods, favoring a qualitative evaluation, although also providing some quantitative results. It includes an heuristic evaluation as well as usage observation sessions with a focus on the user perception of the interaction, aiming to identify HCI issues in hybrid virtual environments. This study also produces a comparison of the evaluation results of the various methods applied, demonstrating that they all contribute in a distinct way to the evaluation results of the HybridDesk. The results also highlight and reinforce the importance of some interaction aspects, like the compatibility among the various signification systems involved during user interaction, and the need to look for the seamless integration of 1D, 2D and 3D tasks from the user perspective.

Para tanto, o presente foca-se no uso de diálogos de mediação na interação de surdos pré-linguísticos bilíngues em um contexto organizacional, possibilitando identificar as rupturas na comunicação entre interface e usuário tanto na página web do sistema de informação, quanto no uso dos diálogos de mediação. Nesse contexto, avaliamos a interação dos usuários nas atividades de navegação e entrada de dados no sistema organizacional, investigando as diferenças na comunicação do sistema interativo sem e com o uso dos diálogos de mediação através da ferramenta Web Navigation Helper (WNH). O resultado da pesquisa possibilitou identificar que o desenvolvimento de estratégias comunicativas que respeitam as especificidades linguísticas de surdos pré-linguísticos bilíngues melhora a qualidade da metacomunicação, promovendo acessibilidade durante a interação com o sistema. / In general, pre-linguistic deaf bilingual users have difficulty understanding the textual information available in web pages. Therefore, this paper focuses on the use of dialogs mediating the interaction of pre-linguistic deaf in a bilingual organizational context, identify possible breakdowns in communication between both user interface and web page system information, as in the use of mediation dialogues. In that context, we evaluated the interaction of users' activities navigation and data entry in the organizational system, investigating differences in interactive communication system with and without the use of mediation dialogues through tool Web Navigation Helper (WNH). The survey results identified that the development of communication strategies that meet the specific language of deaf pre-linguistic bilingual improves the quality of metacommunication, promoting accessibility during interaction with the system.

In this present work we analyze some everyday chronicles inserted in the book Caminhos de João Brandão by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, considering aspects already present in his poetic production and the critical considerations presented in his essayistic chronicles. We present the hypothesis about the relationship between essay, chronic and poetry, not only because they are produced by the same writer, but by the specific characteristics of each gender. Furthermore, we consider that in this specific case of Drummond the everyday chronic would be a continuation to a literary project started in his poetic phase, the search for communicability by the expressive literary way adapted to the contingencies of everyday lives of modern readers. Initially, in order to seek an explicative way and presenting the specific characteristics of chronic, which allows us to relate it to other literary and daily genres, we trace its historical development, why the chronic arose and how it adapted to the Brazilian literary context. In the second phase, to understand the situation of poetry in the historical context of crisis (social, communicative, literary), we seek some critical considerations about the poetry of modernism, the Western and specifically on the social context of Drummond poetry, particularly the postwar context. We add also criticizes of Drummond in his own essays about the general situation of literature and his poetry present in Confissões de Minas and Passeios na ilha. In the last chapter, we analyze some chronicles and chronicpoems of the proposed book, seeking to prove our hypotheses and observe specific aspects present in the texts, which highlight the ironic discursive articulation and use of humor as strategies to enable the participation of the reader in the chronicles. / No presente trabalho procuramos analisar algumas crônicas do cotidiano inseridas no livro Caminhos de João Brandão de Carlos Drummond de Andrade, levando em consideração aspectos já presentes em produção poética bem como as considerações críticas apresentadas em suas crônicas ensaísticas. Apresentamos como hipótese a relação entre ensaio, poesia e crônica, não apenas por serem produzidas pelo mesmo escritor, mas pelas características específicas de cada um dos gêneros. Além disso, consideramos que no caso específico de Drummond, as crônicas do cotidiano estariam dando continuidade a um projeto literário iniciado em sua fase poética, a busca pela comunicabilidade pela via expressiva da literatura adaptada as contingências da vida cotidiana dos leitores modernos. Inicialmente, a fim de buscarmos um caminho explicativo e apresentarmos as características específicas da crônica, que nos permite relacioná-la a outros gêneros literários e do cotidiano, traçamos seu desenvolvimento histórico, como a crônica surgiu e como se adaptou ao contexto literário brasileiro. No segundo momento, para compreendermos a situação da poesia no contexto histórico de crises (social, comunicativa, literária), buscamos as considerações de alguns críticos sobre a poesia do modernismo, do contexto ocidental e especificamente sobre a poesia social de Drummond, particularmente do contexto pós-guerra. Acrescentamos também a critica que o próprio Drummond realiza em seus ensaios, tanto a respeito da situação geral da literatura quanto de sua poesia, presente nos livros Confissões de Minas e Passeios na ilha. No último capítulo, realizamos a análise de algumas crônicas e crônicas-poemas do livro proposto, buscando comprovar nossas hipóteses e observar aspectos específicos presentes nos textos, em que se destaca a articulação discursiva irônica e o uso do humor como estratégias de ativar a participação do leitor nas crônicas.

Está em questão aqui a tese de que, dentro das possíveis formas que essa ação pode assumir, a violência é uma das mais salientes. Na medida em que a violência é não apenas um conceito destrutivo, mas também produtivo, procuro fazer entender como a significação mesma se torna possível e se delineia a partir da violência. De forma a esboçar a silenciosa, porém danosa violência que assombra o uso da língua, procedo a uma análise das formas simbólicas (violentas) por meio das quais o Nordeste, a região mais pobre do Brasil, é representada pela mídia hegemônica do país. Analisam-se, principalmente, cartografias comunicáveis que emergem nos jornais Folha de S. Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo e O Globo e na revista Veja. Os modos pelos quais subjetividades subalternas são diminuídas, depreciadas, desdenhadas e abominadas em diversas reportagens da mídia brasileira revelam modos em que a linguagem é usada para ferir o Outro, especialmente aquele que representa o gênero, a raça e o espaço que não se quer habitar. Esta discussão sobre o papel central da constituição, produção e comunicabilidade da violência no uso da língua significa, em última instancia, que a Pragmática Lingüística e outras abordagens críticas nos estudos da linguagem deveriam incluir a questão da violência em sua agenda de pesquisa / Abstract: This dissertation, inscribed in the field of Linguistic Pragmatics in its interface with Linguistic Anthropology, Philosophy and Psychoanalysis, pursues a possible consequence of a core assumption made by the linguistic turn in the human sciences -namely, the idea that language is a form of action. At stake is the claim that among the shapes that this action might assume, violence is a very salient one. Inasmuch as violence is not only a destructive concept, but also a productive one, I seek to understand how signification itself is rendered possible and shaped by violence. Aiming at depicting the silent but nonetheless painful symbolic violence that haunts language use, I undertake an analysis of the (violent) symbolic forms through which the Northeast of Brazil (Nordeste), the country's poorest geographical area, is represented in the Southeastern media, mainly in the wealthiest state of São Paulo. The ways in which subaltern subjectivities are demeaned, derogated, ridiculed, despised in many pieces of Brazilian media reveal ways in which language is used to hurt the other, specifically the other who represents the gender, the race and the space that one does not want to inhabit. A discussion of the central role of the constitution, production, and communicability of violence in language use means ultimately that critical linguistics should bring in, along the lines of recent approaches of the relation between violence and signification, the question of violence as one of its avenues of inquiry / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística
