Merlin, rémanences contemporaines d’un personnage littéraire médiéval dans la production culturelle francophone (fin 20e siècle et début 21e siècle) : origines et pouvoirs / Merlin, contemporary persistence of a literary medieval figure in the francophone cultural production (late twentieth century and early twenty-first century) : origins and powersZussa, Gaëlle 14 June 2008 (has links)
The character Merlin, was born a long time ago from Welsh chronicles. Its literary origins go back to texts from the 12th century, first in Latin, then in French, in which he becomes Arthur’s famous adviser and acquires a great reputation among readers. Today, nine centuries later, the traditional Merlin is reborn, after Romanticism has forgotten him. The hero is still making us dream. He has become the main character of many works of the current francophone cultural production. This work analyses the contemporary persistence of the literary figure of medieval Merlin through two main themes: the origins and the powers. As a first step, a table of the medieval hero’s portrait is made according to the study of a novel’s corpus showing Merlin in the Middle Ages. Then, based on this table, whose structure builds the study plan, the hero’s contemporary persistence is analysed in detail through a corpus composed of elements from literature, cinema, theatre, comic books and Internet. The study of the origins (which includes the themes of the conception and the Woodwose or wildman’s tradition) shows mostly a modification of Merlin’s creator status, the devil, which is rationalized, paganised or deleted. This change is made to give importance to the Woodwose’s tradition, which already existed in the Middle Ages, but has become dominant in contemporary corpus. A detailed analysis of the Christian depreciation explains these narratological changes, which also affects the theme of powers (which includes the vision, the control over time and the control over space). In addition to their de-Christianization, the powers are considerably modernized thanks to the techniques of the various media. Consequently, they are demystified, which allows a finer identification with the reader-viewer. Thus, Merlin has become reachable, he does not scare any more like in the Middle Ages where his diabolical origin made him doubtful. He appears as a spokesman of a return to nature, as he had already been in the early medieval texts before his message was lost under the weight of the Christian domination. But today more than ever, the world needs examples, models to respect and love nature, whose future seems threatened. Merlin is the ideal messenger of a " naturist " conception of life and world. The contemporary writers understand this. Through his connection to the medieval world and his revisited portrait by the contemporary cultural production, Merlin attracts us, he makes us dream while reminding us of our own being through identification with this extraordinary character / Die Figur Merlin wurde vor langer Zeit aus walisischen Chroniken geboren.

The historical researches on the Brazilian violas were limited by textual and iconographical references to the musical instrument and its musical production, particularly from the second half of the 17th century to the beginnings of the 18th, except from a small reference found in Cancioneiro de Músicas Populares by Cesar das Neves, published first in 1893. Usually confused with lutes, citterns e classical guitars, the historical Brazilian literature shows gaps on the description of the musical instrument. In fact, the violeiros (Brazilian baroque guitarists) often do not acknowledge the instrument as abaroque guitar. The first part of the present work seeks the musical production on the viola in Brazil since Pe. Anchieta arrival, through primary and secondary sources, being considered the earliest plucked string instrument brought to Brazil which remains in use until now, as well as its classification in the plucked stringed instrument families; also, treats its history from the symbolic view of a peasants instrument, emphasizing the prejudice to its performers, as well as its ascension and decline after Cornelio Pires investment son the record industry. The Historical Musicology analyzed from the specific notation in Tablatures and Alfabeto Musical, is here used as a tool to investigate the language from the artistic music written for this kind of guitar during the Portuguese colonization, and in the same time, its popular production in Portugal, since there is no musical manuscripts from Brazil to demonstrate its use here in that period. Based on Portuguese editions of Brazilian music, its possible to recreate modinhas and lundus on the violas, as told by several travelers who described details of our culture, showing the richness of the artistic language, when used as a musical instrument of the dominant classes, and its decline to a poor language, while getting the vinculum to the peasant working classes, marking its most popular denomination on the general medias - viola caipira or sertaneja.

Myth ascendant : issues of culture, media, and identity in the celebrity career of Glenn GouldCampbell, Alasdair James Islay January 2018 (has links)
This thesis applies a sociological framework to the North American celebrity career of Canadian pianist and broadcaster Glenn Gould (1932-1982) to account for Gould's iconic status as an artist in modern musical culture. Despite the persistent cultural fascination with Gould, as evidenced in the seemingly endless supply of biographies, films, novels, and fan texts which narrate and celebrate his life and work, modern Gould scholarship has consistently neglected issues relating to his artistic reception. This thesis proposes that the modern Gould phenomenon is productively analysed in terms of the contexts of its historical production in North America, where it first originated. Focusing on the circumstances of Gould's career during his lifetime, it identifies three areas of overlapping conceptual interest that provide the basis for an explanatory account of his modern mythology: i) Gould's relationship to the culture of his time, particularly in Canada; ii) Gould's relationship to the mass media; iii) Gould's relationship to his own artistic identity. This approach is refined through the application of Stuart Hall's 'Circuit of Culture' model, which yields an understanding of Gould's celebrity in terms of the processes of its representation, production, regulation, and consumption. Against this theoretical backdrop, and consistent with the premise of my thesis, I ask some key questions: what was Gould's relationship to Canadian cultural nationalism and, specifically, a nationalist discourse of public broadcasting? How did media institutions brand his image, and for what commercial purposes? How did Gould mobilise understandings of his genius and Canadian identity through his artistic discourse and experimental media self-representations as a 'Northerner' and a technologist? Based on this analysis, the thesis concludes that Gould continues to fascinate because of the unique ideological work performed by his cultural identities, and because of the highly mediated nature of his celebrity. The ubiquity of his image on video-sharing websites and social media platforms is a vindication of his radical belief in the validity of a musical career pursued primarily through the electronic media.

Nationalising Culture : The Reorganisation of National Culture in Swedish Cultural Policy 1970–2002 / Kulturens nationalisering : Reorganiseringen av nationell kultur i svensk kulturpolitik 1970-2002Harding, Tobias January 2007 (has links)
By comparative analysis of Swedish cultural policy (including art policy, heritage policy and Church policy) during the Riksdag periods of 1970-73, 1991-94, 1994-98 and 1998-2002 the relationship between cultural policy and the concept of the nation as a homogenous cultural community (defined by either an ethnic or a state-framed concept) is explored. Neoinstitutional analysis of cultural policy as an organisational field is combined with analysis of how the nation is conceived as an imagined community, and what values it strives to uphold to show how these values and concepts are institutionalised in its cultural policy and how this supports the legitimacy of the State as a nation-state. In the early seventies, when a general cultural policy was first established in Sweden, most of its fields were already institutionalised and bound by strong path dependencies, binding art policy to protecting universal aesthetic values within the state-framed nation and heritage policy to ethnic particularism while Church policy stood between universalism and ethnic particularism (which infected the relationship between Church and State). These contradictions were managed by strong borders between the fields. In the early seventies these were overlaid with a general cultural policy focused on universal civil values within the state-framed nation. Since then the conflict between Church and State has been defused and the norms of heritage policy have become closer to those of cultural policy at large by the claim that cultural heritage should be used to uphold civil values (e.g. democracy and tolerance). In the late nineties cultural policy has again become less integrated by new government initiatives with specific goals. Civil universal values remain dominant while concepts of the nation are increasingly multi-ethnic.

This study lays a foundation for the empirical mapping of the material production of Afrikaans fiction from 1990 to 2005. The primary research question, namely, how to map Afrikaans fiction production during this period, has been answered through both descriptive-qualitative and statistical-quantitative empirical research. In the first, contextual descriptive component, qualitative research is used to describe the context within which Afrikaans fiction production takes place. The impact of transformation shifts on the production and producer landscapes are mapped through a description of the publishing system. Within this system, book production is regarded as an institution that has inter-systemic relationships with other sub-systems, including institutional contexts (such as media, cultural, literary, educational and library sub-systems), as well as broader societal contexts (such as political, economic and technological contexts). Transformation shifts in the producer landscape (including the establishment, conglomeration, mergers, take-overs and closures of publishing houses) are described through profiling the relevant producers (including publishing houses and other kinds of producers) who contribute to this landscape. In the second, statistical empirical component, quantitative research is used to sketch the contours of Afrikaans fiction production through the construction of production and producer profiles. On a theoretical level, the study follows a sociological and institutional approach to empirical literary studies. This study has been positioned within the developing field of book and publishing studies, specifically within the parameters of the epistemology of production statistics. Itamar Even-Zohar’s poly-system theory and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the field of cultural production form the theoretical framework. Several methodological instruments were developed for the purpose of this study, including a new model of the publishing system, a database of production statistics (the Production Database of Afrikaans Fiction – PDAF), and two typologies of kinds of producers and fiction publications according to which both producer and production categories can be distinguished. The publishing system, the PDAF and the two typologies have been proven useful instruments for the mapping of book production. These instruments will contribute to the fields of book and publishing studies through their application to research on other production categories. The PDAF is a useful resource for measuring the growth and diversity of Afrikaans fiction production. The study concludes that Afrikaans fiction production between 1990 and 2005 was incisively influenced by transformation shifts. Publishing in this field became more challenging in that Afrikaans fiction production had to wean itself from the artificial institutional privilege and substantial state support it had enjoyed and was forced to become economically independent. By 2005, there were far fewer significant producers of Afrikaans fiction in the producer landscape than in 1990. In some production categories, fiction production has shrunk, while, in others, it has grown. Overall, the production profile of Afrikaans fiction has greatly diversified, with Afrikaans fiction appearing in a wide variety of production categories. Afrikaans fiction remains the most diverse and best-developed indigenous tradition of fiction production. The challenge for future case studies is to investigate the relationships between production patterns and specific transformation shifts in the publishing system in terms of specific production categories. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Information Science / unrestricted
