Discourses around abortion in a low-income community in the Western Cape

Bowes, Tanya-Ann January 2009 (has links)
Since the introduction of the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act in 1996, research concerning abortion has primarily focused on public health issues or on the personal experience of women. The cultural and social context within which women experience a termination of pregnancy and in which services are offered has received less attention. The purpose of this study was to analyse public discourses around abortion in a low-income community in the Western Cape. Focus groups were used to gather data from three women’s and three men’s groups. The findings suggest that the agenda of pro-life discourses in this community is not always to defend the life of the fetus. Rather these discourses serve to protect, preserve and maintain the power of the traditional nuclear family, headed by the husband, over women’s reproduction and sexuality. Religious and moral arguments serve to disguise the gender issues at stake. However, instances also occurred where TOP was supported if the husband participated in the decision-making process. Therefore, his presence normalised abortion. Thus, the prevailing public discourses around abortion in this community either support or negate abortion in order to further the agenda of patriarchy.

La figure de Bertrand Rocaforti : expériences, identités et stratégies d'ascension sociale en Provence au début du XVe siècle / The figure of Bertrand de Rocaforti : experiences, identities and social advancement strategies in Provence in the beginning of the 15th century

Gouffran, Laure-Hélène 05 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis is an original corpus, pragmatic source led, indepth study in to the questions of a merchant's identity and forms of social dominance in Marseilles between 1380 and 1430. This work aims to achieve a better understanding of the urban elite within the context of a influential Western Mediterranean city at the end of the Middle Ages, through the experiences of two contemporary and honomous merchants:the Bertrand Rocafortis. A microhistoric approach allows us to shine a light on the careers of the two Rocafortis in a difficult context, that of the reigns of Louis II and Louis III d'Anjou and therefore analyse the different componants of their social dominance. Both Rocafortis belonged to elite urban circles and numerous socio-economic networks. This study will also focus on the influence of the Franciscans and notably their economic theories and how they impacted the construction of a merchant's identity at the beginning of the XVth century, in particular acts of the urban elite that were performed in the interest of the public good.

Domination in graphs with application to network reliability

Dod, Markus 18 December 2015 (has links)
In this thesis we investigate different domination-related graph polynomials, like the connected domination polynomial, the independent domination polynomial, and the total domination polynomial. We prove some basic properties of these polynomials and obtain formulas for the calculation in special graph classes. Furthermore, we also prove results about the calculation of the different graph polynomials in product graphs and different representations of the graph polynomials. One focus of this thesis lays on the generalization of domination-related polynomials. In this context the trivariate domination polynomial is defined and some results about the bipartition polynomial, which is also a generalization of the domination polynomial, is presented. These two polynomials have many useful properties and interesting connections to other graph polynomials. Furthermore, some more general domination-related polynomials are defined in this thesis, which shows some possible directions for further research.

All individuals are involved in a power relationship : Fiction and teacher’s manual in a critical literacy perspective

Franzén, Karl, Tält, Nicklas, Westerlund, Morgan January 2020 (has links)

Maximal Independent Sets in Minimum Colorings

Arumugam, S., Haynes, Teresa W., Henning, Michael A., Nigussie, Yared 06 July 2011 (has links)
Every graph G contains a minimum vertex-coloring with the property that at least one color class of the coloring is a maximal independent set (equivalently, a dominating set) in G. Among all such minimum vertex-colorings of the vertices of G, a coloring with the maximum number of color classes that are dominating sets in G is called a dominating-χ-coloring of G. The number of color classes that are dominating sets in a dominating-χ-coloring of G is defined to be the dominating-χ-color number of G. In this paper, we continue to investigate the dominating-χ-color number of a graph first defined and studied in [1].

Mémoire de licence : La virilité et la domination masculine dans En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule / Étude genrée de l´oeuvre : Virility and male dominance in The end of Eddy: A gendered study

Petersson, Patrik January 2021 (has links)
This thesis presents a gendered study of the novel En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule, [The end of Eddy] by the author Édouard Louis. In his novel the author autobiographically describes not only the development of his own identity, being a homosexual man, but also the rural environment of his childhood, which is defined by the values of the patriarchal system. The goal of this thesis is to reveal how the idealized image of the virile man emerges in the novel and how it constitutes the basis of a gendered role, which is expressed through male domination and the marginalization of the homosexual individual. In our work, we will thus for this purpose, examine the notion of masculinity expressed in the novel by emphasizing the meaning of virility. Using the theoretical tools offered to us by the field of Gender Studies, we will analyze how virility is expressed through the narrative and its creative role as well as its an active part in justifying male dominance in relation to the patriarchal system and to homosexuality.

L’entreprise républicaine

Monette, Gabriel 01 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the impact of the republican conception of freedom applied to business in terms of institutional design. I will defend the idea that, in order to promote republican freedom, it is necessary to legally structure the company in a way that is consistent with republican ideals, that is, by creating the "republican enterprise" whose governance is guided by the principle of dominated interests. The thesis project is twofold. First, present the republican approach to business. Secondly, to develop a theory of enterprise inspired by this trend, which nevertheless makes it possible to open up new perspectives on freedom in the firm.

On the Possibility of Probing Early Matter Domination with Primordial Black Holes / Primordiala svarta hål och tidig materiadominans

Stomberg, Isak January 2021 (has links)
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are expected to form in the very early universe, and therefore, we could use them to probe preBBN times. Astrophysical observations permit the placement of bounds on the abundance of PBHs. Combining these bounds with predictions of PBH formation and the resulting PBH abundances, we explore the possibility to constrain an epoch of early matter domination (MD). For this analysis, we incorporate the recently obtained and most stringent bounds on PBHs from 21 cm observations. We assume density perturbations described by a nearpowerlaw form of the curvature power spectrum consistent with the Planck 2018 results and derive the corresponding PBH mass function using recent results from the literature. To place constraints on an early matterdominated (MD) epoch, we compare this with upto date bounds on PBHs, adding those from 21 cm astronomy, using a formalism to apply monochromatic constraints to extended mass functions. We find that 21 cm bounds on PBHs may probe early MD if it lasts for a duration of at least ∼ 12 efolds and ends at a reheating temperature T_min < T_reh ≲ 105.5 GeV, where Tmin depends on the duration of the MD, the spectral index ns, and αs. For optimistic assumptions, our derived limits on the spectral index ns extend into the Planck 2018 67% upper confidence region of n_s = 0.9649 ± 0.0042, nearly reaching its median n_s = 0.9649, if we neglect the running αs. Our bounds on the running α_s show that early MD is incompatible with positive running α_s ≳ 0.

Roulx, Dominic 12 1900 (has links)
This master’s thesis deals with the various critical uses of the concept of nature in Theodor W. Adorno. Our starting point is the observation that there is a lack of conceptual clarity in the actual scholarly literature that attempts to produce an “environmentalist” interpretation of Adorno's work. In the first section, we discuss the seminal critical concept of nature-history [Naturgeschichte]. We argue that it provides the problem, the critical methodology and the aim of Adorno's critical theory. In a second section, we unfold the dialectic of Aufklärung as a dialectic between nature and reason. We reveal the natural-historical process of domination of nature [Naturbeherrschung] that led to the return of myth in advanced capitalist society. Grounded in the idea that domination produces the necessary conditions for its own overcoming, we question in a third section the idea of a possible reconciliation with nature. We finally indicate how critical self-reflection is a necessary – but not sufficient – condition for its realization.

Using Domination to Analyze RNA Structures.

Coake, Travis Reves 07 May 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Understanding RNA molecules is important to genomics research. Recently researchers at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences used graph theory to model RNA molecules and provided a database of trees representing possible secondary RNA structures. In this thesis we use domination parameters to predict which trees are more likely to exist in nature as RNA structures. This approach appears to have promise in graph theory applications in genomics research.
