[en] TRANSITION TO A CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN THE INDUSTRY: AN APPROACH TO THE BRAZILIAN POLITICAL-NORMATIVE SCENARIO AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT / [pt] TRANSIÇÃO PARA A ECONOMIA CIRCULAR NA INDÚSTRIA: UMA ABORDAGEM SOBRE O CENÁRIO POLÍTICO-NORMATIVO BRASILEIRO E AS OPORTUNIDADES DE APRIMORAMENTO

JULIA ELOY TOURINHO 21 December 2023 (has links)
[en] Given the evidence that we are facing a triple planetary crisis and the scenarios projected if the current production and consumption model is maintained, the transition to a circular economic model presents itself as an alternative to pursue sustainability. Considering that some countries have already adopted initiatives to promote this change, the author sought to map out the political-normative scenario in Brazil. The research sought current normative acts and bills of laws that refer to circular economy, industrial ecology or industrial symbiosis. No results were found for industrial ecology and industrial symbiosis. Out of the six results of current norms that relate to the term circular economy, two decrees that mention it as a guideline for research and for public administration acts, respectively, were selected. The current environmental policies that protect common goods were analyzed, and it was found that their principles and objectives are aligned with the precepts of the circular economy and that their instruments can be allies in this transition. The research of bills pending in the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate had 19 results, and 14 were selected for review. The propositions were divided by themes and possible redundancies, complementarities, contradictions and existing gaps were evaluated. Bill 1874/2022, which institutes a National Circular Economy Policy, and is currently pending in the Federal Senate, was selected as a reference as it presented a proposal for a more robust regulation on the subject. Based on the bibliography, policies and bills analyzed, the author prepared a recommendation of improvements for this bill, aiming to encompass concepts, objectives, principles and instruments considered relevant to support the transition to a circular economy in Brazil.

Unlocking the Potential of AI-driven Circular Business Model Innovation : A case study of an industrial symbiosis / Frigöra potentialen i AI-driven cirkulär affärsmodellinnovation : En fallstudie av en industriell symbios

Minde, Björn Tomas, Bäcklund, Niklas January 2023 (has links)
Purpose – This study aims to explore and provide empirical insights into AI-driven circular business model innovation (CBMI) in industrial symbiosis. In doing so, it addresses the knowledge gap regarding how industrial companies can use AI to amplify circular business models and facilitate AI-driven circular innovation. Method – A thematic analysis was used in the study to answer the research questions. It was based on 32 interviews with informants from five companies conducting an AI innovation initiative and experts, as well as two site visits, four project meetings and 61 company documents. Findings – The analysis showed how AI can amplify an industrial symbiosis and uncovered three principles and symbiotic facilitators for AI-driven CBMI in an industrial symbiosis. The principles and symbiotic facilitators were combined in a coevolutionary alignment framework for AI-driven CBMI in industrial symbioses. Theoretical contributions – This study contributes to prior literature by (1) depicting how AI changes business models and amplifies an industrial symbiosis, where past research only had conceptualised it; (2) identifying principles that describe how AI-driven CBMI should be approached; (3) uncovering three symbiotic facilitators that create conditions for successful AI-driven CBMI; and (4) conceptualising a coevolutionary framework based on the principles and symbiotic facilitators for aligning the innovation efforts between partners in industrial symbioses. Practical contributions – Managers in industrial symbioses can use this study to comprehend how AI can improve resource flows and the significance of efficient data sharing in collaborative AI-driven innovation. Moreover, it provides a framework to assist companies in aligning innovation initiatives among partners in order to succeed with AI-driven CBMI. Limitations of the study – The study focused on five companies involved in an AI innovation initiative in one specific industrial symbiosis. As a result, the findings’ generalisability may be limited, and validating these findings in other industrial symbioses and different industrial ecosystems or partnerships would thus be interesting for future research.

Snålandsstolen : Snåla with material resources

Bessing, Johan January 2019 (has links)
This is a project about how the furniture industry could become more sustainable intheir waste handling. The project is based in Småland both geographically and interms of heritage and history in order to encourage locally produced products. Thecollaborators for this project are the two furniture companies Swedese andStrömslunds Snickerifabrik AB. Both companies have their production in Vaggeryd,Småland. Both companies are struggling with the waste that they produce. The aim ofthis project is to find a sustainable solution for their waste issue. In order to find asolution two theories are applied. The first one is industrial symbiosis which meansthat several industries can, by collaboration, profit from each other’s resources. Thesecond theory is circular economy which encourage remake, reuse or recycling of aproduct once it has reached its end of life. To prove that this solution would be possiblea hunting chair was made by combining the waste material that was gathered fromSwedese and Strömlunds. The decision to make a hunting chair was made to connectthe chair with the heritage of hunting and foresting in rural Småland. The making ofthe chair was different in the way that instead of that the designer would tell thematerial what was possible it was instead the material that decided the limitationsand possibilities. The final product fulfils its purpose and works perfectly for outdooractivities, even though some minor design decisions could have been changed. Theoutcome proves that Swedese and Strömslunds could benefit from working more withcircular economy and start cooperating in order to work as an industrial symbiosis.

Over the years, industrial development has brought positive and negative impacts on society. The metal mechanic sector is em bedded in this respect because it is characterized as a sector of major adverse environmental impact, in addition to consuming natural resources; it generates a series of solid wastes, liquid effluents and atmospheric emissions. Industrial Symbiosis in the various actors (stakeholders) involved, directly or indirectly, the activities of firms are major drivers of change towards pollution prevention. This relationship between the parties can happen in various ways, such as forming a network of joint environmental improvements. It is exactly this point that it intends to expand and explore the inter-relation of the companies with their other players. Who drives whom? Who or what are the mains prings of environmental change? Those inter-relationships for this purpose is already happening in business? How do they occur? These issues, comprehensive and complex, are addressed, evaluated and discussed throughout this work and in-depth case studies in three companies in the industry. The study also includes an identification of the industries of this sector in the area range cited, which identifies 331 companies located in 17 cities from the medium and lower Basin of the Sinos River, which is where the greatest impacts occur from industrial activities. Within the context presented, this dissertation ma in objective is to contribute to the minimization of environmental impacts caused by the metal-mechanic sector in the Basin of Sinos River, having in mind the Industrial Ecology. Combining the results of identification of industries and case studies, this dissertation proposes a model of industrial symbiosis, focusing on by-products, applicable to the sector in the area of the Basin of the Sinos River. The model consists of seven steps that drive environmental improvements of the participants, comprising the implementation of a preventive environmental management for creating a network for exchange of by-products and intangible assets such as knowledge and information. To this end, several stakeholders are the key, such as support entities, universities and funding institutions. The case studies show that there is no single answer to the question about the motives of companies to improve themselves environmentally. Company X has a purely cultural motivation. Company Y has its motivation rooted more in the person of the company's director from the company, although there is a great director for this effort. In the Z Company, the motivation is purely strategic. Anyway, studies show that culture or environmental education directs the reasons for the change. It was identified symbiotic relationships between companies and stakeholders in the three cases studied.

Écologie industrielle, milieu éco-innovateur et diversification de l'économie territoriale : le cas du complexe industrialo-portuaire de Dunkerque / Industrial ecology, eco-innovative milieu and diversification of the territorial economy : the case of the industrial-port complex of Dunkirk

Kasmi, Fédoua 26 November 2018 (has links)
Industrial ecology includes a set of practices aimed at reducing polluting industrial discharges and stands today as a possible way for the transition of industrial system towards a more sustainable operating mode, inspired by natural ecosystems. Its implementation can also be at the origin of innovation dynamics favorable to the development and diversification of territories, especially industrial ones. Industrial ecology is generally studied from the view of its industrial organization (organization of input and output flows, institutional framework and organization of cooperation between companies) and the environmental impacts it entails (economy of materials, recycling, etc.). In this thesis, we study its potential in terms of territorial economic development. For this purpose, we build a theoretical and conceptual framework to highlight the role of industrial ecology as a driver for development and diversification of territories. We propose a new analytical model based on the concept of eco-innovative milieu. This concept, built by crossing the literature on industrial ecology and theories of territorial economy and innovation, explains the mechanisms by which industrial ecology can promote territorial attractiveness and eco-innovation dynamics. It is the foundation on which our hypotheses are based. This model of analysis is applied to the industrialo-port complex of Dunkirk, a territory with strong industrial specialization in search of new ways of diversification of economic activities. We seek to understand the advantages of industrial ecology for the construction of an "eco-innovative" milieu, in which the effects of agglomeration favor the generation and the attractiveness of new activities thus contributing to a diversification of territorial economy. We adopt a mixed methodology based on the descriptive analysis of two databases of companies and a set of semi-structured interviews with 30 companies and institutions. The empirical study shows that industrial ecology contributes to the development of the characteristics of an eco-innovative milieu in Dunkirk. however, the dynamics of collective learning and eco-innovation specific to eco-innovative milieus remain modest. In addition, a nex dynamic of business creation has developed in Dunkirk since 2014. These new companies are linked to companies in the industrial symbiosis, either by the sector of activity, or by eco-industrial synergies. However, this dynamic only concerns a few units, but tends to validate our analysis. The diversification dynamic based on a related variety highlighted here faces, however, many difficulties. These are related to the operational and organizational aspects of the synergies nut they are also specific to the territory (economic fragility and path dependence). The contribution of industrial ecology to the diversification of industrial territories depends, in our opinion, on the resolution of these difficulties. The development of service activities and adapted territorial governance can contribute to the reduction of these limits. We study the characteristics of the service sector and the governance of the industrial symbiosis in Dunkirk. We end up with a set of recommendations that can be useful for public policies as well as for companies and institutions, in order to strengthen the eco-innovative milieu and foster the innovation dynamics that it promises.

Improving climate performance of cement production : Developing an assessment framework and applying it to a CEMEX cement production cluster in Germany

Feizaghaei, Roozbeh January 2011 (has links)
It is very likely that human being is contributing to the process of global warming. Industrial activities such as cement production are among the largest sources of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, there are ongoing efforts to reduce the CO2 emissions attributed to the cement production. In order to be able to systematically identify, classify, and evaluate the most effective, applicable, and feasible CO2 improvement measures, it is essential to have an assessment framework, which has an environmental management perspective. Such a framework should be able to cover the widest range of potential CO2 improvement measures, therefore it has to have a wide system perspective and consider all material, and energy flows within the industry as useful resources. The first part of this thesis uses the concepts of Industrial Ecology and Industrial Symbiosis as the supporting theoretical concepts for developing such assessment framework. The framework has semi-qualitative approach for assessing different measures and is developed in two parts: (1) generic and (2) site-specific assessment. The first part considers general aspects of the measures such as level of Industrial Symbiosis (i.e. complexity of business approach), the potential of each measure for reducing CO2 emissions, and their technological maturity. The second part assesses the feasibility of the measures regarding the conditions of a specific cement producing system. Aspects such as organizational applicability, technical and infrastructural applicability, and the existing level of implementation of each measure are considered. In the second part of this thesis, the developed framework is applied on a selected cement production system which is a cluster composed of three cement plants in Germany (owned by CEMEX) referred to as the Cluster West. The result of the assessment provides insights about the state-of-the-art of CO2 improvement measures in cement industry in general and also demonstrates which of these measures are most (or least) suited for development in the Cluster West. The production system of the Cluster West has effectively applied CO2 improvement measures in areas such as producing blended cement products, using alternative fuels (and renewable fuels) for clinker production. In addition, its clinker production (the Kollenbach plant that is part of the Cluster West) has relatively good energy efficiency. According to the results of the assessment, CO2 improvement measures such as co-generation (producing electricity from excess heat of the plant), using renewable fuels, using alternative materials for clinker production, and increasing the usage of alternative fuels are among the most applicable choices for further implementation. / In relation with LIU-CEMEX Indsutrial Ecology project (2011)

Möjligheter till utvecklad miljökommunikation kring återanvändning av restmaterial : En studie av hur återvinningsföretag kan anpassa sin miljökommunikation efter kunders efterfrågan och miljövärderingar / Possibilities for developed environmental communication around the reuse of waste material : A study of how recycling companies can adapt their environmental communication to customers’ requests and environmental values

Jaktlund, Michaela, Olow, Helena January 2020 (has links)
the enabling of recirculation of waste materials, which can lead to a more efficient and sustainable use of resources. This study explores the possibilities for recycling companies to develop their environmental communication by studying how customers value the environmental benefits generated from the re-use of waste materials. This may contribute to strengthening the market for products and services related to the recycling of waste materials and in that way create a more sustainable use of resources and close material cycles. The study is based on the scientific knowledge developed within the fields of industrial ecology, industrial symbiosis, green marketing and green purchasing. To answer the research questions, an interview study was undertaken alongside with document and literature studies. Interviews were held with customers of the recycling company Econova, concerning how they value environmental benefits and communication and how they prioritize environmental issues. Further interviews were held with sales personnel at Econova, concerning their views of the need for further environmental communication. The findings suggest that decreased emissions of greenhouse gases is the environmental benefit most valued at all levels of the supply chain. This indicates that it is a benefit worth highlighting in the marketing materials of recycling companies. The findings also show that the handling of waste is not a highly prioritized area for green investments, at least not within the interviewed companies. Neither is it an aspect that is prioritized by their customers. However, it is possible for companies like Econova to be proactive by clearly highlighting the benefits of their circular services. Improved environmental communications can contribute to greater awareness among their customers and in society. This awareness could, in the long run, lead to a stronger market for green products associated with the re-circulation of waste materials, which in turn could promote industrial collaborations.

Integrated Approach of Intelligent Asset Maintenance and Resource Conservation for Circular Economy / Integrated Approach of Intelligent Asset Maintenance and Resource Conservation for Circular Economy

Chin, Hon Huin January 2021 (has links)
Rostoucí problémy s nepravidelným zásobováním vodou a znečištěním vody vyžadují pokročilejší metodiky hodnocení vodních zdrojů, které by vedly k praktickému využívání vody a hospodaření s ní.

Industrial Ecology Methods within Engagement Processes for Industrial Resource Management

Aid, Graham January 2013 (has links)
The global use of resources such as materials, energy, and water has surpassed sustainable levels by many accounts. The research presented here was explicitly normative in its aim to improve the understanding of, and make sustainable change toward highly systemic issues of resource management. The core methods chosen to work toward this aim were bottom up action research procedures (including stakeholder engagement processes) and industrial ecology analysis tools. These methods were employed and tested in pragmatic combination through two of the author’s case study projects. The first case study, performed between 2009 and 2012, employed a multi-stakeholder process aimed at improving the cycling of construction and demolition waste in the Stockholm region. The second case study produced a strategic tool (Looplocal) built for facilitating more efficient regional industrial resource networks. While the highly participative aim of the cases required a larger contribution of resources than that of more closed studies, it is arguable that the efficacy of approaching the project aims is improved through their employment. /
QC 20130522

Arbetssätt vid kartläggning av värdehöjande synergier för ökad kapacitet inom industriell symbios : En fallstudie vid Händeö Eco Industrial Park / A proposed approach for mapping value-adding synergies for increased capacity for industrial symbiosis : A case study at Händelö Eco Industrial Park

Nelzén, Milian, Brunfelt, Julia January 2020 (has links)
Industries cooperating with each other and other sectors of society through industrial symbiosis which plays an important role for a sustainable development and the conversion to circular economy. Industries, municipalities and organizations collaborating through, among other things, sharing resources and knowledge leads to energy and resource efficiency with economic, environmental and social benefits. Areas with existing industrial symbiosis have often emerged through spontaneously developed projects, due to regulations or the profitability of utilizing residual flows. Why industrial symbiosis network doesn’t emerge in more areas may be due to lack of communication and coordination as well as companies focusing on their core business and not seeking the benefits that collaborations can provide. A first step in developing industrial symbiosis is to find synergetic opportunities within an area. This step contains a variety of data tools for process input–output stream-based matching. These types of data tools, however, often misses the aspect of involving and engaging employees which is important for the process of industrial symbiosis to emerge and proceed. There is also no clear workflow for how identifying synergy opportunities can be done, where this thesis is a valuable contribution within the subject. This master thesis examines how a mapping of existing and potential value-adding synergies can be structured. Synergies include, for example, exchanges of material and resource flows, shared infrastructure and knowledge networks. Synergies aim to added value of economic benefits, reduced environmental impact or strengthened social links between different actors. A case study was conducted to find synergetic opportunities at Händelö Eco Industrial Park in Norrköping. The data collection was carried out externally by the authors through a review of documents and meetings with employees at Händelö. A workshop with representatives from seven actors was held as internal mapping, which aimed to help them to identify mutual synergy opportunities between each other together. The case study identifies about 50 different synergies and several added values in the Händelö area. As a final part of the mapping, the potential for the identified synergies’ feasibility were assessed. This master thesis presents a workflow for a mapping of existing and potential value-adding synergies within an area. The process consists of four steps; identification of actors, mapping of synergies, incorporation of further actors and feasibility assessment. Discussion is conducted on how the workflow can be adapted based on the surveyor and the area of the symbiosis, as well as the importance of various added values. Formulating a workflow that, in addition to identifying value-added synergies increases the opportunities for industrial symbiosis and more sustainable management of resources in further areas. The conclusions include a recommendation that a mapping of synergies should be done both externally and internally. An internal survey, where actors gather and interact with each other, can result in important added values which facilitates the feasibility of identified synergies. Examples of added value are engagement and increased communication, which strengthens the institutional capacity for industrial symbiosis and enables long-term industrial collaborations. In order to continue the development of the Händelö area, recurrent meetings and coordination of actors are important, taking advantage of identified synergies and employee engagement, thus continuing to develop the industrial symbiosis.
