The present research is a study of the musical theatre industry in São Paulo highlighting the major challenges and opportunities the industry is facing. This analysis enables to achieve the research main objective, which is generate insights and propose actions for the development of musical theatre productions in São Paulo. The research has an exploratory nature with a mixed method research, an approach to inquiry that combines both qualitative and quantitative forms. This paper is composed in one hand by the musical theatre industry analysis, through secondary qualitative data analysis and 6 interviews, and on the other hand a more specifically analysis of all the musical theatre plays produced in São Paulo from 2000 until 2015, through a quantitative data collection. The study shows that the musical theatre industry is growing in terms of both production and investment, but with a hegemony of Broadway productions. On the other hand, Brazilian plays are gaining space as well, leveraged by medleys and biographies plays. The musical theatre industry dependency on the use of cultural incentive laws is its main facilitator and challenge at the same time, since Broadway and biographical plays are perceived as a safer bet not only for the sponsor and producer, but for the artist and public as well. This results into a lack of original dramaturgy. Thus, the two mapped opportunities to develop the industry are to develop an Off-Broadway segment to reduce the cultural incentive laws dependency and raise artistic autonomy and to create a quota for original productions within the cultural incentive laws.

[pt] CAPACIDADES DINÂMICAS, TRANSFORMAÇÕES E INÉRCIA NA INDÚSTRIA FONOGRAFICA BRASILEIRA NO PERÍODO ENTRE 1990 E 2021 / [en] DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES, TRANSFORMATIONS AND INERTIA IN THE BRAZILIAN PHONOGRAPHIC INDUSTRY IN THE PERIOD BETWEEN 1990 AND 2021

RAFAEL DE CASTRO RUSAK 02 June 2022 (has links)
[en] The present work is a case study based on the analysis of the brazilian phonographic industry, between the period from 1990 to 2010. Based on what was observed in the literature review, the nature of the research is qualitative. Six interviews were carried out with executives from the multinational and national majors in the industry (Som Livre, WEA, EMI, Universal, Sony, RCA, etc.). By objective, this research seek to understand how the main companies of the Brazilian music industry perceived the turbulence of the environment resulting from technological innovation, how they developed responses from their dynamic capabilities and what learnings and transformations took place in a new industry scenario. Three moments were taken into account that the phonographic industry passed through in this period: change of media supports, adoption of new hardwares for reproduction and consumption of phonograms and disintermediation of processes, routines, productions, distributions and consumption of phonograms. The results of the study show that technological changes presented two different scenarios for the brazilian music industry: the actors obtained large revenues from the new digital technology, at the same time that the transformations, not foreseen by the industry, caused radical changes, both in the business and in the technological environment of firms. This fact has had serious consequences for the traditional business model of commercialization of phonograms. In this sense, what can be highlighted is an inertia of the actors in relation to the turbulence of the environment. Based on the findings, academic contributions and suggestions for future research were made.

A study of business model analysis on today's Japanese elderly housing industry

Takaki Rakuno Unknown Date (has links)
The aging of Japan outweighs all other nations, as the country is purported to have the highest proportion of elderly citizens resulting from increase of life expectancy due to improvements in medicines and nutrition coinciding with rapid population growth after the World War II. The growing share of elderly people coinciding with changes of family structure and function, people’s lifestyle, fertility rate, and economic as well as sociocultural factors have resulted in a sharp decrease of the traditional three generation households in the last few decades. Nation’s rapid declines in mortality and fertility result in increasing public expenditure for public social welfare while decreasing tax revenue paid by working population. As a result, Japanese social welfare system needs to be restructured, and some social welfare programs need to be outsourced to external business entities to correspond to the nation’s super aging society. In the past, Japanese institutional long-term care facilities largely served for either low-income class people or upper-income class people, and majority number of middle-income class elderly citizens had stayed at home and received family’s living supports. However, large number of today’s and future Japanese middle-income class elderly people are required to live on their own as a result of complex sociocultural factors, such as decrease number of family care taker and changing attitude toward taking care of older parents. Besides, elderly abuse problem, forced healthcare treatments, socially abandoned elderly, and fraud and dispute by elderly care service providers have been major social problems in long-term care service business industry. In order to solve the stated problems, Japanese government restructured law and regulation standard for elderly housing business served mainly for middle-income class aged-citizens in 2011. In order to seize a great investment opportunity and public subsidies to operate business, numerous business entities from numerous types of industry have entered into the elderly housing industry. In a short period of time since new system started, some companies gained success, while others faced problems and left the industry. This study analyzes the industry’s problems and characteristics as well as four case companies from the perspectives of business management theory. In this study, industry analysis model is based on Michael Porter’s five forces model, and case companies are analyzed using Alex Osterwalder’s business canvas model as well as Michael Porter’s SWOT analysis. Based on the study, it is found that delivering right values to target customer groups and building key partnerships with local businesses are especially important factors to make company’s business model more effective for today’s Japanese elderly housing business. Unlike institutional care services provided for socially vulnerable groups in the past, the customer groups of elderly housing are middle-income class and have different demands toward residential services. Moreover, threat of new entrants of this industry becomes higher and industry competition is expected to be growing continuously. Besides, developing unique living support services and preventive care services can be major revenue streams of business as well as a strong competitive advantage over others. Therefore, developing services from customer’s perspective and making a long-lasting relationship become more important to operate residential service business for the elderly in today’s changing Japanese elderly customer’s demands and industry environment.

Lehmann, Robert 12 October 2016 (has links)
