Previous issue date: 2007-10-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis addresses the issue of representation as a performative language agent in the media
communication genres. The main objective is to understand the semiosis of representation, not
limited to the artistic context, as well to propose an extension and expansion of the communicative
context. This study focuses on productions that configure performers, news casters, commercial and
advertising actors, and well-known media characters as media agents, in contemporary Brazilian
culture between 1999 and 2007, among the entertainment, news, and advertising genres. This work
distinguishes between media agents produced for the media market and those processed by cultural
relations. One of the primary assumptions of this work is that television is the privileged paradigm
that defines other media, such as printed news media and non-mainstream media in that these media
reflect the tele-visual paradigm. This work discusses the actor, fiction, parody and performance as
modelling languages of the culture that configures the media agents. The issue is discussed under
the approach of culture semiotics, according to studies from Tartu-Moscow School. The
methodological procedure of this investigation focuses on the process of recodification based on
the work Roman Jakobson and the modelling and cultural texts of Yuri Lotman and Boris
Uspenskii. In regards to the theoretical foundation, the perception of the media as ambience is
informed by Edgar Morin s theory of mass culture as well as the culture of media described by
Lucia Santaella. Patrice Pavis, Marvin Carlson, Algirdas J. Greimas and Paul Zumthor are
referenced to understand the actor and performer as language. The concept of the media agent as a
hybrid of actor, performer and character, which can be positicioned in one or all three roles is
essential for perceiving that in the media universe, we can find a product-agent or a process-agent.
The first can degenerate the concept of actor, detrimental to the market demands. The second can be
capable of promoting the cultural semiosis as well as valorizing the actor as language, emphasizing
Discute o ator, a ficção, a paródia e

Previous issue date: 2010-08-03 / This thesis aims at scrutinizing the creative process of the Brazilian
graphic design. The perspective from which it will be done comprises three cases, with
the different and the common creative procedures being underlined in the text, based on
the interviews made with some different designers. In these cases, a paradox between
economy and culture can be seen, showcasing the creation of the abovementioned
professionals and, at the same time, highlighting the limits that submit the creation to
the market rules. The intention here is to describe the non-linearity of thought, which
experiences diverse temporality when making projects. Thus, considering the variables
that relate time to the creative process, how can we comprehend the procedures and acts
of the graphic designers within this sort of temporality? The hypothesis suggests two
directions: first of all, this research examines the relationship between design and
culture from the perspective of Pinheiro (2007) and Lotman (1898; 1996),
understanding the designer as a translator of visual signs. Secondly, it must not fall into
oblivion that there is a multitude of times , internalizing the conscious, which impel the
designers to make projects in the context of the creative process. A retrospective study
of the past was done based on Braudel (1987), who is a historiographer specialized in
the permanence in the long time . This research revolves around the idea that,
independently of the object taken as the center of an investigation, it is more what
happens during the creative process that defines the complexity as a principle of work
(MORIN, 2006). The time leads the variables of the process to the dimension of an open
model, which simply does not reject the doubt. This instability and, to some extent, this
chaos follow the ideas of Eco (2005) and Prigogine (1996), both of whom discuss the
principles of uncertainty and self-organization, which prevent the unstable systems from
keeping themselves on the way of the entropy. Then, it is necessary to reach a
probabilistic description of the object of this study in the light of General System
Theory (GST) and Vieira (2008). These possibilities convey an universe where
everything is stream and changing. The fundamentals of the creative process based on
semiotics have in Salles (2006) the trinity that follows: the complexity of the systems,
the temporality of the creative process and the representation of the graphic designers / Esta tese tem por objetivo a investigação do processo de criação no
experimenta distintas temporalidades enquanto elabora projetos.
A fundamentação teórica

Teaching and learning how to write is a heavily discussed topic but discussion is not so frequent when it comes to other forms of representation conveying knowledge as well. When individuals learn how to represent (that is, how to create and/or make use of representation), they can appropriate an essential tool to build critical thought, get into institued knowledge and solve their problems. We are studying the case of a renewed implementation of didactic engineering called « The treasure game » (Brousseau, 2004), within cooperative engineering at the ESPE in Brittany. This longitudinal study notably leans upon video sequences. We describe how pupils aged five, on an eight months period, learn to build and develop practices of production an d deciphering representations, both oral and graphic, in a context of communication. We describe also how they adjust and coordinate their actions with other pupils’, so as to solve a problem in common. We reconstruct the didactic genealogy of their practices in order to answer the following question : « How and in what circumstances have they learnt their practices ? ». There, the teacher’s part is essential. He/She will act upon the construction of a contractual background, associated with the process of representation, providing a framework meant to shape the pupils’perception. Our tools take their roots in the theoretical framework of didactic game ( dialectics didactic contract/ milieu ; reluctance/expression), and we explore the affective dimension of this framework within the Joint Action Theory in Didactics.

Previous issue date: 2015-09-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The thesis broachs the constituition of the trademark’s meaning on a perspective of its speech in the consumer society. Through proposed goals, (a) The description of the brand’s communicative process as a social speech; (b) The demonstration of the constituition of the brand’s meaning by the circulation of useful effect; and (c) An articulation of the social theory that bases the process; The intention is to explore it as a theoretical explanatory possibility through the speech in the social semiosis. The thesis is justified through the development of the communicative approach to the constituition of the trademark’s meaning (theoretical relevance) and through the possibility of intervention in the social reality from the knowledge of how the brand is instituted as a social speech (social relevance). It’s about a theoretical work, of qualitative nature, from an exploratory research, proposing the construction of a brand’s semiosis. It was concluded that the constituition of the comtemporary brand’s meaning essentially by a process of production of social sense in the consumer society is theoretically pertinent.

Previous issue date: 2012-11-01 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Comics (comics), formerly associated with the print media today are blogs, websites, creating a specific new product (webcomics). Under the bias of semiotic, we understand how comics have changed when transmuting the printed media to digital. We used the concepts of the semiotics of culture, which suggested the dynamics of the characters studied in culture. In this sense, the comics are objects of codes and are manifested as cultural texts, and the operation is taking place in the relationship of these codes. In view of the semiotic concepts, analyze semiosis entertainment systems (comics), occurring through the interaction of the different languages - film, photography, cartoon, painting - and the relationship with the digital system (Internet). Because it is an issue that occurs at the intersection of communication and semiotics, the study takes a transdisciplinary vision and wants to correlate
the existing features in both in order to understand the changes generated in the comics in the Internet environment. We start from the assumption that the internet environment is changing the language of comics, thus we analyzed five sites that publish comics, and were selected because they exhibited characteristics to prove our hypothesis. We make an observation script that was completed at the time were held data collection during the period August-September 2011, according to the dates that were posted the comics. Thus, this research is relevant because the main focus is the language of comics produced from contact with other languages of cyberspace, checking the modeling systems in this environment. It is believed that the research will contribute to the role of comic culture.

Sémiotika tlumočnického zápisu / Semiotics of note-taking in consecutive interpretingHrušovská, Petra January 2014 (has links)
The present thesis focuses on semiotic aspects of note-taking in consecutive interpreting, in particular with respect to the process of semiosis and factors influencing the interpreters' conception of their notes. Chapter 1 mentions the basic features of note-taking in order to trace its semiotic characteristics in the following parts of the thesis. In Chapter 2, the notes as a specific semiotic system are briefly discussed within the framework of the second Peircean trichotomy of signs (cases of iconicity, indexicality and symbolicity are demonstrated) and in terms of their function, productivity and spatial settings. After these general considerations, Chapter 3 introduces the main theoretical approaches to the technique of note-taking (principally those of the Geneva and Heidelberg schools) including the issues of the languages involved in interpreting or the nature of signs. As the accent is on the process of semiosis (apprehension of signs by interpreters, generating signs according to the meaning of the speech and searching for the motivation for the interpreters' concrete choices of signs and their form), the chapter lists some basic signs and methods well- tested by practitioners. The signs are also analysed in terms of their origin and possibilities of expansion (composition, derivation...

The New York Times (EUA); El País (Espanha). / This doctoral thesis studied the tensions inflicted upon journalistic practices by new manners of social intervention which are led by the so-called Occupy movement, with social networking websites as spaces of metabolization. Based on C. S. Peirce's Theory of Signs, it is argued that in language is the main function of journalism: to exercise a qualified mediation in the public space between the chaotic reality of events and the society, a result of its formation as a social, academic and professional field. So, the production of news stories is understood as a complex tangle of mediation that results in the semiosis of news, represented graphically by the scheme object/event – interpreting mind/journalism – sign/news. What follows from this perspective is the idea that journalism, in the condition of a system that produces meanings, is going through a systemic crisis caused by the interaction with other agents that compose the non-physical space Lotman calls semiosphere. That which journalism does not represent in its sign/news because of a semiosis that traditionally limits the hermeneutic power of events, as said by Quéré, now is signified by other systems and broadly shared in social networks, which threatens the part of mediator journalism has played throughput history. This reflection is based on inferences made during ethnographic movements carried out in the newsrooms of three reference newspapers: Folha de S. Paulo (Brazil); The New York Times (USA); El País (Spain). Also, together with this experience, the monitoring of phenomena such as the Occupy Wall Street movement, in the US, and the June Journeys, in Brazil, was a an attempt to understand their manners of articulation, mobilization and intervention. In the interface between journalism and the Occupy movements it is glimpsed, because of their dispute of meanings in the social networks, the proposition of the concept of network interpreter. At last, the need for journalism to reflect upon this crisis is argued, since it occupies the logical and transitory part of interpreter in the semiosis of news. This reflection would result in more complex manners of representing social conflicts as semiotic objects. The social movements, thus, should comprehend the constitution of the network interpreter so as to create strategies for promoting the debate about their demands.

Previous issue date: 2017-06-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Fundação São Paulo - FUNDASP / In 1970, in the context of the experimental cinema of the time, Gene
Youngblood released a book under the title of Expanded Cinema. It took a
few decades for this text to be repeatedly remembered and quoted. From
about ten years on, the adjective "expanded" began to be increasingly
attached to other media, especially photography and even video.
This is most probably due to the growing process of hybridization of
languages as a consequence of the multiplication of media we are seeing.
This is the background of this research.
At the forefront, there is the search for exploitation of the production of the
artist and poet Lenora de Barros.
For this reason, it was imperative to return to a cultural universe, since her
work comprises an extension of the operations put in by Concrete Poetry and
Neoconcretism, since the 1970s. So much so that the artist uses post-
Duchamp positions, entangled rock, pop, paradigmatic changes on the
body, the rise of performance art and video art. Thus, it is proposed to
rewrite an "Other Generation 80".
The corpus of the research is understood by the works: Poema (1979), Língua
Vertebral (1998) and the series Não Quero Nem Ver (2005). Therefore, the
research questions: How to name, in order to understand and signify, a
quantity of multiple performances contained within your creation? With this
in mind, the concept of "Expanded Poetry" is developed here. The
theoretical foundation is fixed on the understandings of semiosis and
aesthetic sign, contextualized in the light of the semiotic philosophy of
Vertebral (1998) e a série Não Quero Nem Ver (2005). Logo, a pesquisa
Charles Sanders Peirce

through a translation process that occurs from negotiated solutions between human
beings and technology. The main problem that this research seeks to answer can be
stated as follows: Does the principle of translation, which is inherent to the semiotic
and cognitive process, act in modifying the subjective condition within digital
networks? The hypotheses are: 1) The principle of translation is inherent to semiotic
cognitive process; 2) The subject that emerges from the digital networks presents
himself in multiple translated versions; 3) These translated versions are configured by
means of an autopoietic, interpretive and collaborative process. From this perspective,
the aim of this study was to seek a differentiated understanding of translation which
moves away from the traditional approaches based heavily on the theories of linguistic
exchanges. My proposition is an renewed approach based on a semiotic and cognitive
perspective, which aims to rethink the condition of the subject that emerges from the
entangled web of mediation active in cyberspace. Both the problem and the purpose of
this research require exploring the connections among the fields of communication,
semiotics, philosophy and cognitive sciences. It follows a detailed discussion of the
subject by means of theoretical frameworks and commented cases. The theoretical
frameworks are: Varela and Maturana and the theory of autopoiesis; the expansion of
autopoietic theory to the humanities by Félix Guattari; the theory of semiospheres by
Yuri Lotman and his interpreters Jesper Hoffmeyer, Kotov and Kull; the semiotic
theory of C.S. Peirce, with special emphasis given to his theory of the interpretants;
and the mind in life theory by Evan Thompson. Commented cases are extracted
directly from the digital networks / O objeto desta pesquisa é o processo de emergência do sujeito-signo-complexo, por
A questão e o objetivo
Disso decorre a

Previous issue date: 2007-05-09 / The main motivation of this work was the growing popularization, among scientists,
of a theory which asserts that the biological evolution may be guided by the cultural
evolution. Known as the Baldwin Effect, it asserts that when things to be learned become
relatively fixed, this creates an evolutionary pressure for those things to be incorporated
genetically, by natural selection.
The work started with the verification that there are several occurrences of an effect
similar to the Baldwin Effect, where one, more flexible, evolutionary level guides the
evolution of another level, less flexible. The problem approached by the research was the
inexistence of a single explanation for these several occurrences.
Of theses occurrences, the evolution of software was taken as the work s object of
studies. Its teleological aspect can be more clearly appreciated by observing that the evolution
of the programming languages is guided by the evolution of the programs, and that every
program is written using a programming language. Since programs change more quickly as
the languages, those more successful tend to be incorporated or to determine which
characteristics should be present in the next generation of languages, guiding, in this manner,
their evolution.
Given the relationship between software and language, the main objective of the work
is to demonstrate that the teleological aspect of the software evolution originate, mainly, from
the role played by semiosis in it. Bibliographical research is used as the methodology of work,
and the theoretical background used is Semiotics and other elements of Peirce s evolutionary
philosophy. The work presents, at first, the theoretical foundations, explaining how evolution
corresponds to the action of sign and why this process is teleological. Next, it approaches the
software evolution presenting situations where this can be observed. By pointing a concrete
situation where evolution is guided, and by demonstrating what this is caused by the action of
sign, the work has contributed to the area of communication and semiotics in two manners: it
makes evident the relationship between computation and semiosis and argues in favor of the
importance of the sign action in evolution, calling attention to its teleological aspect / A motivação principal da presente dissertação foi a crescente popularização, entre os
