The effective-range function in nuclear physics: a method to parameterize phase shifts and extract ANCs

Ramirez Suarez, Oscar Leonardo 18 December 2014 (has links)
The connection between phase shifts and the ANC has been explored in the frame of the effective range theory. The main result is that, in practice and under rather simple requirements, scattering states (phases shifts) can be correctly described and connected with bound states via the effective range function, and therefore, ANCs can be accurately determined thanks to the analytic properties of this function. This result has an important impact in stellar evolution due to the ANC and phases shifts are directly connected with capture cross sections which, for instance, determine partially the stage and evolution of stars.<p><p>As a first step, the effective range function is approximated via the effective range expansion which shows that a successful phase-shift description depends on how precise the effective range parameters are determined. Thus, a technique to compute accurately these parameters is developed here. Its construction is based on a set of recurrence relations at low energy, that allows a compact and general description of the truncated<p>effective range expansion. Several potential models are used to illustrate the effectiveness<p>of this technique and to discuss its numerical limitations. The results shows that a very good precision of the effective-range parameters can be achieved; nevertheless, to describe experimental phase shifts several effective-range parameters can be needed, which shows a limitation for practical applications.<p><p>As a second step, the effective range function is analyzed theoretically in an arbitrary energy range. This analysis shows that this function can be decomposed in such a way that contributions of bound states, resonances and background can be separated in a similar way as in the phenomenological R-matrix. In this new form experimental data can be better fitted because the free parameter space is reduced considerably,<p>and therefore, extrapolations are better handled. By construction, the method agrees with the scattering matrix properties which allows a simple calculation of resonances (locations and widths) and asymptotic normalization constants (ANCs). Several tests are successfully performed via potential models. Phase shifts for the 2 + partial wave of the 12C+α are analyzed with this method. They are correctly described including both<p>resonances at Ec.m. = 2.7 and 4.4 MeV. For the 6.92 MeV (2+) exited state of 16O, the ANC estimation 112(8) × 10 3 fm^−1/2 is obtained taking into account statistical errors. / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Sleep deprivation and its impact on circadian rhythms and glucose metabolism / La privation du sommeil et son impact sur les rythmes circadiens et le métabolisme du glucose

Jha, Pawan Kumar 06 July 2016 (has links)
Located in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the master clock generates rhythms of behavioural and metabolic processes in mammals. For example, daily rhythms of sleep-wake, fasting-feeding, plasma glucose concentration, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity are regulated by the SCN clock. Light is the primary synchronizer of SCN pacemaker though many light-independent factors such as behavioural arousal and metabolic cues also have phase and period resetting properties. The aim of thesis was to study different aspects of the interactions between behavioural arousal, circadian rhythms and glucose metabolism. In the first part, we extended the study of brain control of glucose metabolism by investigating the central action of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), a neuropeptide synthesized in the SCN, on glucose metabolism. Our result indicates that central GRP induces long-lasting hyperglycemia. We also showed that acute sleep deprivation leads to impaired glucose tolerance. In the second part, we demonstrated that behavioural arousal induced by sleep deprivation or caffeine treatment enhances photic-entrainment of the SCN clock in the diurnal Sudanian grass rat, Arvicanthis ansorgei. These circadian responses in a diurnal species are opposite to the earlier findings in nocturnal rodents and may have biomedical applications.

Loss, Gain, and Chromosomes : Readability and Translation Shifts in Medical Information for Families of Children with 10q25/10q26 Deletions

Runyeon-Odeberg, Kristina January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis for the degree of Master, one year, is to investigate the translation of medical information from British English into Swedish. The analysis is concerned with readability and terminology. In specific, the areas of investigation are how readability of the material compares to other studies, what translation strategies or sources a translator may use, and what kind of translation shifts the terms analyzed undergo. The source text material consists of some six thousand words from a leaflet called 10q25 and 10q26 Deletions from Unique, a charity organization based in Great Britain, which welcomes families located worldwide as members. The theory in this thesis is based on previous research within the focus areas of readability, terminology, translation strategies, and translation shifts. Examples include Frege (1948 [1892]), Ogden and Richards (1923), Flesch(1948), McLaughlin (1969), Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), Deléger et al (2010), Kolahi andShirvani (2012), and Acar and İşisağ (2017). The text material does not fulfill the professional recommendations regarding readability, which confirms observations from previous studies. Overall, there is a tendency towards an improved readability level in the translation, which contradicts one bilingual study (Kolahi and Shirvani) but partially confirms another (Acar and İşisağ). Of the terms identified for analysis, 49.4 % have been found to require translation strategies sorting under oblique translation, where the predominant method is transposition. A significantly higher number of terms have been found in term banks and corpora than indicated in a previous study.

Bergenfalk, Edvin January 2020 (has links)
This study examines how the word ʾillā is treated in the Swedish Qur’ān translation from 1917 by Karl Vilhelm Zetterstéen. The analysis is based on Swedish and Arabic grammar and translation theory, and considers the fact that this Qur’ān translation is considered to be quite faithful to the source text. The study finds that the textual equivalent of ʾillā varies greatly in the target text, and further that it is not limited to exclusive conjunctions nor exceptives; rather, it often consists of a restrictive adverb in an affirmative clause, when ʾillā in the source text is in a negative clause. This points to a unique problematic of translation where ʾillā is concerned, which warrants further examination in future studies.

Asp, August January 2020 (has links)
The past decade has been a relatively tumultuous time in Swedish parliamentary politics with minority governments, a new party challenging the status quo and ultimately the breaking of the second largest coalition in Swedish politics. The decade also saw some policy changes in parties, most strikingly the Moderate party which once an outspoken proponent of a lax immigration policy, saw a clear shift to a more restrictive policy after the 2015 refugee crisis. The first aim of this study is to explain what the shift in immigration policy looks like in terms of whether it was a positional change or a change in ideological emphasis too. By using the method of comparing manifestos the conclusion was reached that the Moderate party shifted both their positional policy and their ideological emphasis. The question of what drives political parties to change policy is a hotly debated one with a wide array of theories and perspectives contributing to the discussion. In addition this study also attempts to apply the theory first proposed by Harmel and Janda (1994) “An Integrated Theory of Party Goals and Party change” on the Moderate party to explain the driving force behind the shift in immigration policy. This was done by comparing Moderate party manifestos from the year 2006 to 2018 in three issues (immigration, private actors in the education sector and private actors in the healthcare sector) that saw the public opinion clearly shift away from the party. Mostly through the process of elimination the study concludes that the Moderate party likely shifted their position on immigration issues in order to have better chances of forming more advantageous coalitions in order to change their opposition status in the future.

Dygnet runt : En litteraturöversikt om skiftarbetets konsekvenser på sjuksköterskor och deras arbete / Around the clock : A literature review of shift work’s consequences on nurses and their work

Cohen, Emelie, Lagrelius, Eva January 2014 (has links)
Background: Shift work is common among nurses all over the world. It has been related to negative consequences like circadian rhythm disorders and health issues. Hence it is important to illustrate how shift work is affecting nurses and the care they are giving. Aim: To describe the consequences shift work has on nurses and their work. Method: A literature review based on 14 quantitative studies, collected from PubMed. The search terms were: shift work, nurse, patient safety and fatigue. The studies have been investigated and analyzed with influence by Friberg (2012a), where similarities and themes were identified. Results: Extended and quickly rotating shifts contributes to burnout, sleep disturbances, fatigue and elevated frequency of errors. Despite this, many nurses are satisfied with working extended shifts since it shortens their workweek. A central aspect is the opportunity to recover between shifts. Discussions: The authors discuss the results based on Kim’s (1987) theory on nursing domains, and the consequences of shift work on nurses, client-nurse interaction and environmental factors. Forming healthful work environments where the safety of both nurses and patients are prioritized are crucial to prevent negative consequences of shift work.

Driving Autonomous Heavy Vehicles into the Future : A Business Model Perspective / Driving Autonomous Heavy Vehicles into the Future : Ett affärsmodellsperspektiv

Saibel, Anna, Kitzler, Gabriel January 2020 (has links)
In light of the many environmental challenges that the world currently faces, new sustainable solutions are called for. The concept of autonomous heavy vehicles (AVs) is considered to be one of the next megatrends within transportation and this technology shift is predicted to improve safety and logistics as well as to cut driver costs and reduce CO2-emissions. However, from a company's perspective, technology shifts are not without risks as technical disruptions can cause core competencies to become obsolete and radical technology innovation can be fatal to a company that does not innovate its business models simultaneously. Due to the complexity and novelty of the AV technology, business model innovation within the field has been lagging behind and there is an area of uncertainty regarding how a future business model for AVs could be formulated. In order to investigate potential business models for AV applications, this study has been carried out as an exploratory case study of two industry specific applications for goods transports within confined areas at the heavy vehicle manufacturer Scania in Södertälje, Sweden. The Business Model Canvas tool developed by Osterwalder and Pigneur (2010) has been used to map the business models of these two cases with the purpose of combining them into a general model. Furthermore, four important capabilities at the company have been identified and determined as to whether they qualify as core competencies based on the criteria presented by Prahalad and Hamel (1990) and then discussed in relation to how they can be leveraged in a future business model. The findings of this study help to formulate a business model perspective for future AV goods transport applications that consists of a service-based model characterised by a focus on collaboration and value co-creation, an adaptable level of integration with the customers' systems, transfer of ownership of products to the manufacturer and a value-driven source of differentiation. Lastly, the study concludes that Lean production and modularity are two existing core competencies of Scania that could be leveraged dynamically in a future business model connected to this technology shift. / <p>Affiliation party: ITRL (Integrated Transport Research Lab)</p>
