<p>Abstract</p><p>This paper is about the philosophies created by Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) and Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900). The purpose is to show the high degree of similarities between Thoreau’s and Nietzsche’s philosphy.</p><p>At first glance, it seems far-fetched to suggest an affinity between them; the differences in style and choice of subjects, have most certainly contributed to the fact that very few comparisons so far have been made. There is no evidence that one experienced any influence over the other, neither writer seems to have been aware of the other. Also their different areas of use during the 20th century, may have influenced the almost total lack of search for affinity. Thoreau’s philosphy has often been used by environmentalist movements, while Nietzsche has been connected to a wide range of various strivings, such as totalitarian regimes, individualistic artists and post-modern thinkers.</p><p>But if one disregard these facts, look beyond the differences, and break down their texts in search for their most fundamental opinions, one will see that Nietzsche and Thoreau shared a number of concerns. They were both ciritical to many aspects of the modern civilisation, espacially the way of life it encouraged. It was a life style, deep rooted in an obstructive tradition, that did not take the very essential conditions of life into consideration. This was both Thoreau’s and Nietzsche’s opinion, and their philosophies represent a willingness to re-establish a way of life that ignores all traditions hostile to life.</p><p>Both of them criticize the religion and its moral of work, the modern science, and many institutions of the modern society – the schools and the prisons for example. But they also praise things, things they claim to have a value in contrast to the modern way of life – the simple things. Both Thoreau and Nietzsche praise the solitude life style, the silent walking in the wilderness, the simple but healthy food, as well as some intellectual stimulus, especially good litterature and music. All these simple things contribute to Thoreau’s and Nietzsche’s opinion of life; it should be looked upon with the eyes of a child. Life should be like a play.</p><p>The title of this paper is Philosphers of the Rooster and the Morning. The title suggests the similarities I have found between Thoreau’s and Nietzsche’s philosophies. They both announce an awakening. For them, a new morning has broken, and this paper shows the similar circumstances they give credit for their awakening.</p>

Canticle is a very religious story about a monastery dedicated to preserving scientific knowledge from the time before nuclear war which devastated the world and reduced humanity to a pre-technological civilization. The Catholic Church and this monastery are portrayed as a bastion of civilization amidst barbarians and a light of faith amidst atheism. Unfortunately, humanity destroys the Earth once again, but Miller ends with two beacons of hope: a starship headed for the unknown to help humanity begin again and the preternaturally innocent Rachel who portends a future for similarly innocent human beings repopulating the Earth. Thus, faith ultimately triumphs over atheism even in the midst of almost total catastrophe.

Ces travaux de thèse portent sur la conception, la fabrication et la caractérisation de résonateurs nano-optomécaniques sous forme de disques en arséniure de Gallium (GaAs). Ces disques sont à la fois des résonateurs mécaniques oscillant au GHz, et des résonateurs optiques à mode de galerie à haut facteur de qualité (>10^5). En confinant l'énergie mécanique et optique sur un volume sub-µm^3, ils permettent d'atteindre un couplage optomécanique extrêmement large (g0 >1 MHz). Nous présentons les développements technologiques ayant permis l'intégration de ces résonateurs avec des guides de couplage optique directement sur échantillon semi-conducteur, tout en maintenant des performances à l'état de l'art. Nous discutons les différents mécanismes de couplage optomécanique (pression de radiation, photoélasticité) dans les disques GaAs, ainsi que les sources de dissipation optique et mécanique dans ces résonateurs. Nous présentons également des expériences d'optomécanique à l'air libre et en cryostat à basse température, allant de la mesure du mouvement brownien et l'observation de rétroaction dynamique, jusqu'à des premières tentatives d'approche du régime quantique du mouvement. Enfin, nous présentons un développement nano-optomécanique complémentaire mené sur le matériau nitrure de silicium (SiN), aboutissant à la fabrication de résonateurs à mode de galerie sur puce à haut facteur de qualité. Après l'étude des instabilités optiques et de la dynamique d'auto-pulsation de ces résonateurs, nous présentons des premières signatures de couplage optomécanique dissipatif dans ces systèmes.

Regeneration-Dostoyevskij's ideology, with a glance at Gide's paradoxical "adaptation"McCreath, Agneta Antonia 09 1900 (has links)
St. John 12:24, used by Dostoyevskij as an epigraph to his last and highly
acclaimed novel BpaTbJI KapaMa30BbI (The Brothers Karamazov), served as an
inspiration for Andre Gide. The title of the latter's contentious
autobiography Si le grain ne meurt (If it die ... ), is part of the same biblical verse.
The significance of Dostoyevskij's epigraph and Gide's title are critically
examined with regard to ideologies expressed in their literary works.
Analogies and contrasts are scrutinised: considerable similarities but more
discrepancies are discerned. Intense crises in Dostoyevskij's life led to an
upward movement, reflected in his oeuvre, reaching out toward Christ's
message as revealed by St. John 12:24. On the other hand, Gide started his
career imbued with the above message, but gradually he deviated from it and
died an atheist. His fascination with Dostoyevskij prompted him to write a
profound biography on the great Russian, containing a perceptive article on
The Brothers Karamazov when this novel was still practically unknown in the
West. Dostoyevskij's pre-eminence as ideological author, psychologist,
philosopher and artist is highlighted while Gide is disclosed as the moralistic
immoralist of his time.
The thesis suggested here is that Dostoyevskij's ideology of self-abnegation in
order to be regenerated into eternal life challenged Gide to reject this concept. Therein lies his paradoxical "adaptation".
The purpose is to uncover the religious perceptions in Dostoyevskij's four
major novels, to establish that his fictional characters, though never used as mouthpieces for the author, represent his universal philosophy and transmit
the author's quest for truth to the reader, and finally to examine Gide's
reaction to Dostoyevskij's influence / Classics and Modern European Languages / D. Litt. et Phil. (Russian)

Laboratório de Educação Profissional em Vigilância em Saúde / Esta pesquisa analisa uma experiência original de formulação e prática de currículo, gerada no curso de Especialização Técnica em Saúde Ambiental para a População do Campo realizado pela EPSJV e pelo MST. Para chegar à compreensão da formulação curricular e da prática levada a efeito no curso sob análise, são apresentados três grandes painéis: os condicionantes da questão agrária no Brasil; o debate teórico sobre a relação entre expansão do capitalismo e seus impactos sociais, ambientais e na saúde das populações, em especial, dos trabalhadores rurais; uma reflexão sobre pedagogia, formação e sua relação com o trabalho. Na fase exploratória da pesquisa foram realizadas revisão bibliográfica, análise documental, pesquisa em bancos de dados de instituições públicas, em sites de órgãos do Governo Federal e de organizações da sociedade civil. A análise descritiva teve como fonte de dados os documentos do arquivo do curso e material coletado no trabalho de campo através da observação de campo e de questionários aplicados com os educandos. Nos resultados da pesquisa foram identificados e apresentados os sujeitos sociais que participaram da construção curricular, o processo de construção curricular propriamente, os componentes curriculares estruturais do currículo e o método pedagógico do MST. A pesquisa conclui que a formulação teórica e prática do currículo do curso, que envolveu uma gama extensa de conhecimento e de experiências pedagógicas, resultou em uma organização curricular original e complexa. Esta organização curricular se tornou possível pelo processo de construção permanente e coletiva, no encontro de diferentes saberes e experiências. / Este estudio examina una experiencia única de la formulación y la práctica de los planes de estudio, generado en el curso de Especialización Técnica en Salud Ambiental para la Población Rural y llevada a cabo por la EPSJV y por el MST. Para llegar a una comprensión de la formulación de los planes de estudios y prácticas llevadas a cabo en el curso que se examina presenta tres grupos principales: las condiciones de la cuestión agraria en Brasil, el debate teórico sobre la relación entre la expansión del capitalismo y sus impactos sociales, ambientales y de la salud de las poblaciones, especialmente los trabajadores rurales, una reflexión sobre la educación, la formación y su relación con el trabajo. El momento exploratorio se realizó la revisión de la literatura, la análisis de documentos, busca en la base de datos de las instituciones públicas, los sitios del Gobierno Federal y organizaciones de la sociedad civil. El análisis descriptivo tiene como base de datos el archivo de origen de datos y materiales del curso recogidos en el trabajo de campo a través de la observación de campo y cuestionarios con los estudiantes. En los resultados del estudio se identifican y presentan los sujetos sociales que participaron en la construcción curricular, el proceso de construcción curricular en sí, los componentes estructurales del plan de estudios y el método educativo del MST. La investigación concluye que la formulación teórica y práctica del plan de estudios, que involvio a una amplia gama de experiencias pedagogicas dio lugar a una estructura curricular única y compleja. Este plan de estudios ha sido posible por el proceso de construcción permanente y colectiva, en el encuentro de conocimientos y experiencias diferentes.

Emosionele en spirituele intelligensie in huweliksaanpassing : jong volwassenes met voorskoolse kinders (Afrikaans)Smith, Anna Magrietha 16 May 2010 (has links)
AFRIKAANS: In hierdie navorsing is die huwelik met voorskoolse kinders in Suid-Afrika aan die begin van die een-en-twintigste eeu ondersoek. Hierdie huweliksfase, met sy vele uitdagings en huwelikstake, word beskou as die fase met die laagste huweliksaanpassing en die hoogste voorkoms van egskeiding. Die sin en betekenis van hierdie uitdagings (spirituele intelligensie of SQ), sowel as die emosionele belewenis, verstaan en hantering hiervan (emosionele intelligensie of EQ), asook die rol wat dit in huweliksaanpassing speel, is ondersoek. Eerstens is ’n vraelys ontwikkel wat SQ-eienskappe kan meet (MMV-SQ-vraelys), naamlik: (i) die vind van sin en betekenis in ’n gegewe situasie, (ii) motiveringsbronne van gedrag, en (iii) die waardes wat uitgeleef word. Data van 198 respondente het gedui op betroubaarheid van subskale wat wissel van 0.47 tot 0.80. Bevredigende konstrukgeldigheid is verkry deur die verhouding tussen die subskale van die SQ-vraelys en waardeskaal te ondersoek (r het gevarieer van 0.15; p ≤ 0.05 tot 0.54; p ≤ 0.01). Sowel kwantitatiewe as kwalitatiewe navorsing is vervolgens gebruik. In die kwantitatiewe navorsing is die MMV-SQ-vraelys, die huweliks-aanpassingsvraelys van Spanier (Dyadic Adjustment Scale), asook die SSRI (Schutte Self-Report Inventory) op 84 deelnemers toegepas. Die deelnemers het 84 getroude persone, waaronder 34 egpare ingesluit. Die verband tussen huweliksaanpassing en EQ is ondersoek deur korrelasies te bereken tussen die subskale van die DAS en SSRI. Dit het geblyk dat ʼn optimistiese gemoedstemming ʼn verband toon met al die subskale van huweliksaanpassing. Die herkenning van die eie en die huweliksmaat se gevoelens, sosiale vaardighede, en die toepassing van emosies blyk verband te hou met hoër huwelikstevredenheid asook huwelikskonsensus. Sosiale vaardighede het ook ʼn verband getoon met affeksionele uitdrukking. EQ het egter nie ’n sterk verband met huwelikskohesie getoon nie. Die verband tussen die subskale van die DAS is vervolgens vergelyk met dié van die MMV-SQ-vraelys. Betekenisvolle korrelasies tussen enkele skale van huweliksaanpassing en SQ het voorgekom, veral wat die motiveringskaal betref: egpaarlede wie se gedrag deur die motiveringsbron bemeestering gemotiveer word, blyk ʼn hoër mate van huweliksaanpassing te hê, terwyl die negatiewe motiveringsbronne, waaronder selfgesentreerdheid, drange en vrees, ’n negatiewe verband met huweliksaanpassing toon. Min verbande is egter gevind tussen huweliksaanpassing, en sin en betekenis (wel tussen meditatiewe bewustheid en huwelikskonsensus, asook tussen empatiese aanvaarding en openheid, en affeksionele ekspressie). Geen verbande is ten opsigte van waardes gevind nie. Verskille tussen mans en vroue se EQ en SQ is ook ondersoek, maar geen groot verskille is verkry nie. Deur ’n meervoudige regressie is enkele verdere biografiese veranderlikes geïdentifiseer wat ʼn verband met huweliksaanpassing toon. In die kwalitatiewe navorsing is verskeie aspekte ondersoek en bespreek: die rolverdeling ten opsigte van kinderopvoeding en huistake, die balans tussen beroep en gesin, persoonlike tevredenheid (SQ) in die huwelik, asook die begrip en hantering van gevoelens (EQ). Die waarde van hierdie navorsing lê veral in die grondleggingswerk van die SQ-vraelys, asook bruikbare inligting ten opsigte van die huwelik met voorskoolse kinders in Suid-Afrika. Leiding aan egpare in die hantering van gevoelens (EQ), asook insig in hulle motiveringsbronne (SQ) behoort dus hulle huweliksaanpassing te verhoog. ENGLISH: In this research, the South-African marriage with preschool children was investigated. This phase of marriage, full of challenges and marital tasks, is regarded showing the lowest degree of marital adjustment and the highest incidence of divorce. The meaning, (spiritual intelligence or SQ), emotional experience, understanding and dealing with these challenges (emotional intelligence or EQ), as well as the relation to marital adjustment, were investigated. Firstly, a questionnaire was developed that could measure the characteristics of SQ, namely: (i) finding purpose and meaning in a given situation, (ii) motivations of behaviour, and (iii) values. Data from 198 respondents indicated the reliability of the subscales, which vary from 0.47 to 0.80. Satisfactory construct validity was obtained by researching the relation between the subscales of the SQ questionnaire and the value scale (r varied from 0.15; p ≤ 0.05 to 0.54; p ≤ 0.01). Next, both qualitative and quantitative research were utilised. In the quantitative research, the MMV SQ questionnaire, the marital adjustment questionnaire of Spanier (Dyadic Adjustment Scale), as well as the SSRI (Schutte Self-Report Inventory) were completed by the respondents. The respondents were 84 married individuals, including 34 couples. The relationship between marital adjustment and EQ was investigated by calculating correlations between the subscales of the DAS and SSRI. It transpired that an optimistic frame of mind showed a correlation with all the subscales of marital adjustment. It also appeared that the recognition of the own and the spouse’s feelings, social skills, and the application of emotions were related to increased marital satisfaction as well as marital consensus. Social skills also displayed a correlation with affectional expression. EQ, however, did not show a strong correlation with marital cohesion. Next, the relation between the subscales of the DAS was compared to that of the MMV-SQ questionnaire. Meaningful correlations between some scales of marital adjustment and SQ occurred, in particular with regard to the motivational scale: couples whose behaviour are motivated by mastering, appear to display a higher degree of marital adjustment, while the negative sources of motivation like self-centredness, craving and fears, display a negative correlation with marital adjustment. Few correlations were found between marital adjustment and purpose and meaning (between meditative awareness and marital consensus; between empathetic acceptance and openness, and affectional expression). No correlation was found with regard to values. Differences between the EQ and SQ of men and women were also investigated, but no major differences were observed. By means of multiple regressions it was indicated that some biographic variables did show a correlation with marital adjustment. Valuable information was obtained in the qualitative research regarding the couple’s roles in child-raising and domestic chores, the balance between career and family, personal satisfaction (SQ) in the marriage, as well as the understanding and handling of feelings (EQ). The value of this research lies in the foundational work of the SQ questionnaire in particular, as well as useful information with regard to South African marriages with preschool children. Nous analysons le dernier ouvrage écrit par Pierre Bayle, les Entretiens de Maxime et de Themiste (1707), où il livre un combat de plume ultime avec deux théologiens réformés, Jean Le Clerc et Isaac Jaquelot. Il s’agit d’une querelle entamée après la publication du Dictionnaire historique et critique (1697) de Bayle, et dont tous les ouvrages directement concernés sont aussi examinés. À partir du problème du mal et du péché, Bayle formule une critique à la théologie chrétienne visant à mettre en évidence la faiblesse des arguments rationnels qui doivent l’affirmer. Les seules forces de la raison ne suffisent pas à éclairer les dogmes qui forment la religion, et il faut avoir recours à la lumière de la foi, à la Bible, pour les accepter. De l’étude de cette argumentation nous concluons que, pour Bayle, la religion est une question privée, qui ne se prête pas vraiment au dialogue philosophique. / We analyze the last work written by Pierre Bayle, the Entretiens de Maxime et de Thémiste (1707), where he opposes for the last time two Arminian Theologians, Jean Le Clerc and Isaac Jaquelot. Their quarrel started with the publication of Bayle’s Dictionnaire historique et critique (1697) and continued until his death in 1706. By pointing to the insoluble problem of evil and sin, he proposes a refutation of rational arguments that attempt to prove Christian Theology. We examine all the writings involved in this controversy and review in great length its arguments. Bayle shows that Christianity is unable to demonstrate its dogmas by reason, and claims that only faith can legitimate them. Therefore it is concluded that religion for Bayle belongs to the private sphere, and cannot be rationalized through a philosophical dialogue.
