Electrical properties of BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ and its application in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells

Rainwater, Benjamin H. 06 July 2012 (has links)
Conventional oxygen anion conducting yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) based solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) operate at high temperatures (800oC-1000oC). SOFCs based on proton conducting ceramics, however, can operate at intermediate temperatures (450oC-750oC) due to low activation energy for protonic defect transport when compared to oxygen vacancy transport. Fuel cells that operate at intermediate temperatures ease the critical materials requirements of cell components and reduce system costs, which is necessary for large scale commercialization. BaCeO3-based perovskite materials are candidates for use as ion conductors in intermediate temperature SOFCs (IT-SOFCs) when doped with trivalent cations in the B-site. B-site doping forms oxygen vacancies which greatly increases the electrical conductivity of the material. The oxygen vacancies are consumed during the creation of protonic defects or electronic defects, depending on the atmosphere and temperature range. High performance IT-SOFCs based on the Y3+ and Yb3+ doped BaCeO3-based system, BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ (BZCYYb) have been recently reported. High conductivity in O2/H2O atmosphere was reported, however, a more basic understanding of the BZCYYb structure, electrical conductivity, and the portion of the charge carried by each charge carrier under fuel cell conditions is lacking. In this work, the BZCYYb material is fabricated by the solid state reaction method and the crystal structure at intermediate temperatures is studied using HT-XRD. The total conductivity of BZCYYb in H2/H2O, O2/H2O, and air atmospheres in the IT-SOFC temperature range is reported. The activation energy for transport at these conditions is determined from the conductivity data and the transference numbers of protonic defects, oxygen anion defects and electronic defects in the BZCYYb material are determined by the concentration cell - OCV method. BZCYYb is a mixed proton, oxygen anion, and electronic conductor at IT-SOFC temperature ranges (450oC - 750oC), in H2, O2, and H2O containing atmospheres. Ni-BZCYYb/BZCYYb/BZCYYb-LSCF fuel cells were constructed and peak power densities of ~1.2 W/cm2 were reported at 750oC after optimization of the Ni-BZCYYb anode porosity. Decreasing the Ni-BZCYYb anode porosity did not significantly affect the electrical conductivity of the anode, however the peak power densities of the IT-SOFCs based on the anode with less porosity, calculated from I-V curve data, showed dramatic improvement. The fuel cell with the lowest anode porosity demonstrated the highest performance. This finding is in stark contrast to the optimal anode porosity needed for high performance in YSZ-based, oxygen anion conducting SOFCs. Because of significant proton conduction in the BZCYYb material, fuel cell reaction products (water) form at the cathode side and less porosity is required on the anode side. The improvement in performance in the BZCYYb based IT-SOFC is attributed to the unique microstructure formed in the Ni-BZCYYb anode when no pore forming additives are used which may contribute to high electrocatalytic behavior for anode reactions. This work provides a basic understanding of the electrical properties of BZCYYb and clarifies the feasibility of using BZCYYb in each component of the IT-SOFC system as well as in other electrochemical devices. The high performance of the Ni-BZCYYb/BZCYYb/BZCYYb-LSCF IT-SOFC, due to low anode porosity, provides a new understanding for the rational development of high performance IT-SOFCs based on electrolytes with significant protonic conduction.

Formes et figures du psychodrame : l'exemple de l'adolescence / Forms and figures of psychodrama : the example of adolescence

Morel, Alexandre 12 March 2015 (has links)
Granting that psychoanalytic psychodrama can effect change, this project seeks to produce both a metapsychological description of the basis for its effectiveness and an account of the specific ways in which it pursues the therapeutic aims of psychoanalysis. The example of adolescent drive reinforcement raises questions about the capacities for symbolization and for the organization of drives that are made possible as often by the psychic apparatus as by the mechanisms (whether of prostheses or of detours) of psychotherapy. Three longitudinal studies, narratives of psychodramatic treatments of adolescents, anchor the construction of a specifically psychodramatic "figurability" with three modalities, the "narrative", the "scenic", and the "dramatic". This research project aims to produce a metapsychological account of these modalities at the intersection between clinical practice and the psychoanalytic literature. The Freudian notion of "figurability" serves as the framework for constructing these modalities and for representing their capacity to symbolize the psyche and to articulate a psychotherapeutic instrument. The continuity of an experience of subjectivization permitted by the "narrative" modality is completed by the fictional specificities of psychodramatic narrativity. Salutary evasions of the mechanisms of censorship and increased commerce with psychic reality thus support the shaping of drive quantities. The circulation of the notion of "scene" in metapsychology describes the dimension of process that is supported by the "scenic" modality. If the staging is at the service of a conscious awareness, it also operates through recourse to the hallucinatory. What the scene of psychodrama permits regarding a distinction of objects and constraints regarding interactions with them, is a subjectivizing factor of "objectalization" that provides a counterweight to narcissistic retreat. The object created by the psychodrama grows out of the capacities for harmonization of the psychodramatic scene, the capacities being described through their singular use of transitionality. Finally, the "dramatic" modality unfolds the fecundity of the modes of presence of the act in psychodramatic representation. The excitement conveyed by group play-acting calls for a constant work of shaping which uses various expressive media. The object is at once the one that provokes quantities of excitement and the one that will support their linking. The figurative activity is articulated with a protective shield that can relaunch the regulating activity of repression. Between impression and expression, the aesthetic activity of the actors performance consists in the modulation of the values attributed to the representations. The "dramatic" can then be defined as an art of variations in search of meaning. The meaningful objects that emerge from these variations of affectation are then scrutinized as the topographic and subjectivizing aim of the interlacings between material reality and psychic reality. By being set into play and put on stage, a place of representation is more easily given or restored to the transference so as to undo its "agieren" effective potentiality. In conclusion, the last clinical narrative makes it possible to show the utility and the structuring character of these modalities in the adolescent staging of the second act of the Oedipal drama.

The new families of lithium-conducting ionic liquids; aromatic and aliphatic lithium salts based on perfluorosulfonate and perfluorosulfonylimide anions attached to an oligoether (methoxy polyethylene glycol mPEG) with different lengths were synthesized and characterized with the aim to improve the salt interaction with the host polymer's POE chains while keeping a high segmental mobility. They allowed obtaining membranes with lower crystallization degree and higher cationic transport number as compared with benchmarked salts. Their properties as lithium salts were investigated in two types of host polymers i.e. a linear polyether (POE) and a cross-linked polyether prepared by a ‘GREEN' process. Their oligooxyethylene moieties improve the lithium cation solvation leading to an increase in cationic transference numbers. Their electrochemical and thermal stabilities are suitable for lithium battery application.

Attachment Figure Transference, Caregiving Styles And Marital Satisfaction In Arranged And Love Marriages

Gundogdu Akturk, Elcin 01 July 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The study aims to investigate the effects of married women&rsquo / s attachment security, caregiving styles, how they initiated marriage (i.e., love vs. arranged) and whether they have egalitarian or traditional marriage on their marital satisfaction and attachment figure transference to their husband. It is expected that attachment to spouse would be stronger and attachment functions would be transferred earlier in love marriages than arranged marriages. Moreover, caregiving styles, attachment security, and egalitarian structure of marriage are expected to predict transference of attachment functions to husbands and marital satisfaction. Married women (N = 204) filled out a questionnaire package including the measures of division of labor in house chores, significant people in their life, attachment anxiety and avoidance, caregiving styles, and marital satisfaction. A series of ANCOVA controlling for the duration of marriage was conducted to compare the participants with arranged and love marriages. Separate hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to predict attachment strength and satisfaction separately for love and arranged marriages. Results revealed no significant difference between arranged and love marriages on the strength and timing of attachment figure transference to spouse. In both types of marriage, sensitive and responsive caregiving styles and low attachment avoidance were associated with stronger attachment to spouse. Although those with egalitarian relationships reported higher levels of marital satisfaction in both love and arranged marriages, women with both egalitarian and love marriages reported the highest levels of marital satisfaction than those with traditional and love marriage. The findings were discussed considering cultural context and previous work.

Être chef d’établissement : étude clinique auprès de chefs d’établissement ayant participé à des groupes d’analyses des pratiques / Being a headmaster : a clinical survey among headmasters who experimented with group analyses of their own professional practice

Botté Allain, Françoise 13 January 2017 (has links)
The following thesis tackles the subject of being a headmaster. This experience is related from a psychoanalytical point of view and uses six different examples of headmasters who have experimented with analysing their own practice. The first part narrates my story as a former headmaster so as to offer a better understanding of which questions to ask the other headmasters. Then, the essay revolves around the methodology and theoretical approach I used for this work. Analysing the acts of the official gazette as well as the research work and testimonies made by some of my peers on the subject allowed me to enhance the current specificities of the job. The second part details the six interviews I had with my fellow headmasters. They all said that having such a position had a deep impact on their professional identity and that it taught them to put the emphasis on human relationships in their job. This raises the question of the training one has to elaborate to prepare young headmasters to cope with their new position. Finally, the interviewees mentioned the group sessions they took part in to analyse their professional practice, insisting that these sessions helped them better negotiate the relational aspects involved by their job. Thus, this essay develops the idea that setting up group sessions to help headmasters analyse their professional practice should play a bigger part in their training.

“Are We What We Eat?” Negotiating Identities Through Cuisine and Consumption : A Thing Theory Approach to Alison Wong’s As The Earth Turns Silver

Yiu, Man Ting January 2018 (has links)
Culinary narratives are frequently employed to portray migrant identities and societies in Asian diaspora literature This thesis examines cuisine and consumption in Alison Wong’s As The Earth Turns Silver by highlighting the socio-political linkages between material culture and ethnic identity formation of Chinese migrants in New Zealand. Using Brown’s thing theory, food is reframed as site of meaningful discourse to interrogate the role of cuisine and consumption in mediating the migrant experience. It demonstrates the material and cultural importance of food in facilitating ethnic and political identification, transcultural exchange, and independence for frequently oppressed migrant individuals in diaspora literature.  Conversely, food functions as vectors of aggression in racialising the ethnic other by communicating artificial notions of morality, national identity, and purity to reinforce the hegemony. Additionally, culinary objects facilitate how characters articulate their dislocation and fragmentation as hybrid individuals. Finally, I undertake a craft analysis of Wong’s novel by drawing connections between Wong’s hybridity and her narrative design. I use thing theory to demonstrate how characters use culinary objects to negotiate hybridity while the application of transference technique reveals the way material objects are embedded with abstract emotions to communicate writer and character ethnic subjectivity. Findings from the critical analysis are applied to my short story collection Raw. Thing theory provides the theoretical framework for the practical application of transference in my creative thesis, demonstrating its efficacy in improving craft. The creative thesis demonstrates the applicability of theory in creative practice. Finally, it offers an analytical framework for contextualising food as a site of discourse for hybridized identity politics in diaspora literary criticism.

Ramos Filho, Américo da Costa January 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2009-11-18T18:50:26Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 americo.pdf: 3047984 bytes, checksum: d8d2e132c67ca7660f9ee80db792daca (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008 / The major purpose of this thesis is to verify, from a Brazilian perspective, how global and contextual issues influence the management learning in Multinationals. The management learning derived from the interaction of holding and subsidiaries/colligates of Multinational corporation is supposed to be subject to convergent and divergent forces, the former related to global and standardized organizational practices, and the latter, is seen as a social practice subject to cultural and organizational singularities. A model was constructed to relate the dichotomy between the universality of the management practices and technologies and the particularity of the contexts where they operate, to the dichotomy between the singularities in organization and national level. This model is composed of the international, global, managerial and inter-organizational dimensions related, respectively, to the cultural and political diversity; to the universal forces of practices and values; to the managerial capabilities and resources in the organization, consolidated as best practices and to the interaction between holding and subsidiaries and the resulted learning. The combined result of these dimensions influences the knowledge flow and the learning derived from it. The field research was constituted of five cases of internationalized Brazilian firms, with a solid experience in their management systems. The main subjects of this study were executives and professionals/managers who respond to the management development. The data were first collected in the headquarters and complemented with visits to subsidiaries/joint ventures in other countries, in loco or with expatriated people who return to Brazil. The central supposition was validated. So, the management learning ¿ is driven by the global capitalism practices and by the global culture where they are immersed, reproducing a hegemonic vision and a common language (global dimension); ¿ incorporates the more propagated and dominant managerial values, although there are some variations when they are applied in the subsidiaries/joint ventures; is the product of the assimilation of international recognized and planned managerial practices, with the acculturation power, although not completely; is the result mainly of the managerial practice in work; is impacted not only by cross-cultural and managerial factors, but also by the business environment of the firm; is given according to the capabilities and resources in the organization, guiding the form of assimilation of practices and technologies, with global application or not (managerial dimension); ¿ is affected by the cross-cultural diversity involving the countries of the holding and the subsidiaries/joint ventures where the firm is and is given as a reproduction of the political context of the holding and subsidiaries countries (international dimension); ¿ faces aligned concurrent institutional pressures between corporate or global systems, practices of other subsidiaries/joint ventures and local practices; is more difficult to reach when there is not permeability between organizational cultures and identities of a Multinational firm; is affected by how much the relationship process across these unities is self-referenced; is facilitated by the construction and improvement of the knowledge network (interorganizational dimension). Finally some contributions of this study are exposed, including extensions of the proposed model and suggestions, recommendations for future research.

Discount retail internationalisation : barriers to the deployment of glocalisation

Christiansen, Hans January 2017 (has links)
The standardisations/adaptation theme is amongst the most debated within International Retailing. Much research has attended to the question of whether an MNC should adapt to local market needs or, if instead, it should emphasise the upholding of global standards to reap efficiencies. Within this debate there is much focus on resonating to market needs but less on the inheritance, history and structure of the MNC and how this affects the ability to adapt or standardise, or indeed to do both by applying the glocalisation theme. Existing research has placed less emphasis on how the MNC might be biased towards either standardising or adapting regardless of market conditions. Central to this debate is the transfer of a retail formula. It is commonly understood that the faithful replication of a retail formula means that each element of the marketing mix is copied ‘as is’ from home to host country. This can at best be a benchmark as no MNC would be able to completely copy a home-derived standard to the host market, however, some retail concepts are generically better able to perform this ideal act than others. They would attempt to standardise as much as possible, adopting a strategy that maximises replication as it seeks not to duplicate resources across borders. The key point in this attempt is whether it does so out of recognising that differences are insignificant, or if it does so because it is unable to see that the differences do matter. Seen from an institutionalisation perspective and, initially looking at the home-derived context only, one recognises the well-defined relationship and interaction between MNC and consumer culture and the position the MNC has obtained in terms of brand strength and success. It is easy to see that context will be different in the host market, but difficult to take this into account when transferring the retail formula out of the home context. More recent literature on embeddedness has addressed some of these linkages and influences which affect the way MNCs transfer their retail concepts, but the literature fails to recognise the full impact. The structural paradox embodies some of the dilemma in this discussion as it addresses the conflict between transferred operational structure and the need to adapt locally to market needs. The glocalisation theme approaches the same dilemma from a competency perspective but does not embrace what stops the MNC from being more adaptive. This research develops a model that aims to combine these perspectives. This model is deployed to three cases, all detailing the transfer of a highly standardised retail concept, hard discounting, which is an ideal platform to explore how home-derived structure is transferred and how it deals with trans-contextual dimensions across borders. The research looks critically and in-depth at how the standards applied impact on the levels of awareness paid towards the need to adapt to trans-contextual dimensions and seeks evidence that demonstrate how attention to the differences become vital to success. At the same time, the cases illustrate that the differences may alter, but the approach taken towards them remain the same. The model defines this approach as a strategic trajectory called ‘MaxRep’, which is developed out of the home context and remains aligned to this particular foreign context when transferred in on the host settings. The benchmarking of this approach against the glocalisation theme leads to the identification of gaps and definition of action to be taken to overcome these barriers to applying effective glocalisation.

Souza, Liana Bairros de January 2010 (has links)
This study analyses the transference rates of vocalization rules of the lateral in post-vocalic position into English by speakers of Portuguese as mother language in different stages of the learning process. In order to do that, two data collection were made in different situations. The first collection was made in Dublin, Ireland, with 5 learners of English as a second language in pre-intermediate and intermediate levels. This collection took place in two moments of their learning process, one close to the date of their arrival in Ireland and another one three months later. The second collection was made in Canoas, in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre – RS, with 6 informants who have different certificates from Cambridge University (FCE – First Certificate in English e CPE – Certificate of Proficiency in English). In order to make this analysis, finding the linguistic and extralinguistic factors which were influencing the application or non-application of the variable rules tested here, the collected data were submitted to the computational program GoldVarb2001. The collections were first analysed separately and, afterwards, the results were compared in only one run with all the collected data. The groups of factors tested were: stress, word position, preceding context, following context, English level, type of recording and informant. The variables word position, preceding context and English level were selected by the program when all data were tested. The variables following context and type of recording were shown as non acting in the transference of the vocalization rule. From the extralinguistic variables, the variable English level was the one which most acted since it was selected in all the runs as well as the linguistic variable word position.
