[en] A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON VOCATIVES IN ORAL LANGUAGE FOR PORTUGUESE L2 / [pt] UM ESTUDO DESCRITIVO DO VOCATIVO EM LINGUAGEM ORAL PARA PORTUGUÊS L2DEBORA CARVALHO CAPELLA 18 September 2009 (has links)
[en] The aim of this study is to identify, describe and analyze the words and/or
expressions in the position of vocatives, used by native speakers of Portuguese in
daily situations, in its varied forms of interaction, in order to help foreign learners
of Portuguese during their learning process regarding such terms. Based,
basically, on concepts from Social Anthropology, Interculturalism and
Pragmatics, we intend to present the usage of vocatives in informal oral discourse,
observing some contexts of applicability, strategies used by speakers and also, the
level of linguistic appropriateness in intercultural communication.

[en] O SENHOR/A SENHORA OR VOCÊ?: THE COMPLEXITY OF THE BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE SYSTEM OF ADDRESS / [pt] O SENHOR/A SENHORA OU VOCÊ?: A COMPLEXIDADE DO SISTEMA DE TRATAMENTO NO PORTUGUÊS DO BRASILVANESSA FREITAS DA SILVA 16 August 2010 (has links)
[en] One of the incontestably relevant aspects to the teaching of Portuguese as a Second
Language (PL2-E) is the multiplicity of pronouns and forms of address. In relation to the
second person, the Portuguese language has a more complex system of address than the
dichotomous formal/informal system of many other languages. Therefore, our aim is to
describe the use of the pronouns of address o senhor/a senhora vs você through the analysis
of the data gathered by means of interviews with native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese.
To do so we considered the sociocultural aspects which influence the choice between o
senhor/a senhora or você as well as different contexts. We also intended to verify how a
possible negotiation of address occurs. The concepts from Interactional Sociolinguistics,
Cultural Anthropology and Interculturalism were of paramount importance to this research.
Finally, it was concluded that there is a tendency towards the minimization of power and
distance in interpersonal relationships, leading to intimacy and informality, which explains
the more frequent use of você in comparison with o senhor/a senhora.

[en] THE ROLE OF ENGLISH AS A FIRST LANGUAGE IN TEACHING-LEARNING OF PORTUGUESE AS A SECOND LANGUAGE FOR FOREIGNERS / [pt] O PAPEL DO INGLÊS COMO PRIMEIRA LÍNGUA EM ENSINO-APRENDIZAGEM DO PORTUGUÊS COMO SEGUNDA LÍNGUA PARA ESTRANGEIROSMARIA CECILIA GONSALVES CARVALHO 17 May 2017 (has links)
[en] The role of English as a first language in teaching-learning process of Portuguese as a second language for foreigners investigates, as the own title indicates, the relation between first and second languages - L1 and L2 - in the process of L2 development by adult speakers. The main objective of the dissertation was to confront teaching theories and methods that defend the monolinguism in L2 classroom, and seek to distance L2 from L1, that is perceived as interference in the learning process. Questioning this idea, the research analyzed a period of ten hours of Portuguese as L2 classes, taught for native English speakers, in an immersion context in Brazil, specifically in PUC-Rio. To develop this analysis, basics concepts of psychoanalysis, interculturalism and social construction of knowledge were used as theoretical foundation, that shed light on L1-L2 interface, involving all of its dimensions, especially the subjective, the cultural and the social ones, respectively. After the classes transcriptions, the research identified the moments in which the students switched from Portuguese to English, observing the reasons and consequences of this alternation from L2 to L1. As from this, we concluded that students used English, their mother language, with four different functions: expressing feelings, evaluating, understanding structure and expanding vocabulary. Excepting for the first one, the three others resulted in knowledge construction and, thus, it manifested itself as a pedagogical resource. In its turn, the L1 use for expressing feelings in L2 classroom was noted in a different way, because it was not effectively positive to the learning process. Therefore, the information provided by the analysis of data indicated a positive tendency in the L1 use, corroborating the thesis that L1 can be an auxiliary resource for new language learning.

[en] This comparative analysis, reveals behaviors, feelings, celebrations and how they are expressed in relation to the rite of death passage in Brazil, Canada and Norway, considering the use of human language, verbal and non-verbal, as a vehicle for expressing cultural values, behavioral habits as well as personal feelings externalization. The corpus has been collected from two online interview series conducted with native speakers of these countries who have already witnessed such rites. The basic theoretical foundation of this research focuses on the area of Interculturalism along with the area of Linguistics. The main authors who have guided this research are Lewis (2006), Da Matta (2004; 1997; 1993; 1987; 1984), Tagnin (2013; 1989) and Perini (2010; 2003; 1999). Our results reveal, among other findings, that the multicultural countries under analysis, categorized by Lewis as linear-active culture places, suffer some regional variations, approaching the multi-active culture category.

[en] The concept of jeitinho is present in a series of discourses that express a set of values that Brazilians perceive as their own. In fact, jeitinho cannot be correlated exclusively to a social class or select group. It is constructed as a social practice known and legitimized by all segments of Brazilian society. Thus, based on a social perspective of the language, the approach of this concept in a context of teaching Brazilian Portuguese as a foreign language or second language is relevant. In this dissertation, we propose to approach the concept of jeitinho through the reading and analysis of chronicles of three Brazilian authors. This genre presents a unique language which is a product of journalistic discourse and, at the same time, is included among recognized literary genres. The analysis of chronicles was carried out from the perspective of discursive semiotics, aiming to search for meanings that are related to the concept of jeitinho. Based on an intercultural perspective, foreign learners can touch on certain cultural aspects that involve the concept of jeitinho in Brazilian society, through the reading of chronicles. We believe that the result of this research may contribute to the promotion of a critical cultural awareness within the scope of the teaching of
Brazilian Portuguese.

brasileiro.
especificidades linguísticas quanto as culturais do idioma estrangeiro ensinado,
alunos. / [en] This work aims mainly to classify the speech act of order performed by
soldiers in the Brazilian Army taking into account interactional and cultural
aspects underlying this type of utterance, in order to promote the viability of a
more effective Portuguese language teaching method for foreign soldiers. Thus,
the theoretical foundation of this paper is based on an interdisciplinary approach
that emphasizes the interface between intercultural and interactional aspects from
a pragmatic perspective. This study consists of a qualitative research that uses
direct ethnographic microanalysis to examine the speech act of order in the
military environment recorded in four situations of case study in which volunteers
participate in interactions where the speech act is present. Therefore, in such
circumstances, contextual variables such as power distance, social distance and
urgency to carry out orders are considered according to what is proposed by
Brown and Levinson (1987) and Hofstede (2010). The results point to the use of
strategies of politeness to minimize the act of threat when an order is given, and
they indicate that there is always at least one of the following interactional
variables: short hierarchical distance, close social proximity and non-urgency of
order. In this manner, Portuguese teachers are have resources and theoretical
foundation to convey to their students both idioms and cultural idiosyncrasies of
the language they are teaching, and improve students language skills.

[pt] O POTENCIAL DIDÁTICO DO SAMBA-EXALTAÇÃO NO ENSINO DE PORTUGUÊS COMO SEGUNDA LÍNGUA PARA ESTRANGEIROS / [en] THE DIDACTIC POTENTIAL OF EXULTATION SAMBA IN THE TEACHING OF PORTUGUESE AS A SECOND LANGUAGE TO FOREIGNERSDEISE DULCE BARRETO DE LEMOS 18 May 2022 (has links)
[en] The present study aimed to investigate the possibilities of using exultation samba as a didactic tool in classes of Portuguese as a Second Language for Foreigners. We emphasize here that our focus turned to exultation sambas from carnival associations which promote samba school parades during the carnival festivities, a celebration known internationally. This study was designed to observe the identities of subjects who are part of exultation samba, a kind of music that is deeply representative of Brazilian carnival. We argue that reading the lyrics of this textual genre can be a tool to understand the subjectivity of Brazilians in this context and their reasons for participating in this social group. We conducted qualitative and exploratory analysis with exultation sambas that represent samba schools from five regions of Brazil, looking at different Brazilian cities: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Recife, Corumbá, Uruguaiana and Manaus. Considering our objectives of observing the lyrics, we organized the research into four categories, investigated separately: Relation established between the subject and the samba school, Relation established between past and present, Feelings that connect subject and samba school, Relation between subject and space. The final results indicate the potential of exultation samba to teaching Portuguese as a Second Language to Foreigners, which is the reason why we propose that exultation samba is a possible tool for teachers. We conclude that the lyrics studied offer a rich resource to unite the teaching of grammar and lexicon to the processes of (de)construction of the understanding that the foreigner has about Brazilians. It emphasizes that the exultation samba reveals identities and emotions shared collectively by the components, backstage at carnival, away from the show. As a theoretical framework, we are based on the conceptions of Culture addressed by Hall (1959), Singer (2000), Laraia (2002), Williams (2007) and Hofstede, Hofstede and Minkov (2010). To deal with Interculturality, we rely on the approaches of Peterson (2004), Bennett (1998) and Hofstede, Hofstede and Minkov (2010). The notions of Identity are based on Bauman s (2005) perspectives.

[pt] A COMPREENSÃO DE REFLEXIVOS E PRONOMINAIS POR CRIANÇAS FALANTES DE PORTUGUÊS BRASILEIRO / [en] THE COMPREHENSION OF REFLEXIVES AND PRONOMINALS BY BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING CHILDRENMICHELLE FRYDMAN PERELMUTER 20 October 2020 (has links)
[en] This dissertation focuses on the comprehension of the 3rd person reflexive and referential pronouns by Brazilian Portuguese-speaking children. The constraints of the Principles A and B of the Biding Theory are considered from a psycholinguistic perspective, which takes into account the relative accessibility of potential antecedents of those forms in the working memory during sentence/discourse processing. The reflexivity theory (Reinhart and Reuland,1993) is a major reference, for being compatible with a language acquisition procedure whereby reflexive forms are represented as bound anaphors via the identification of reflexive predicates at the semantic interface. The distribution of anaphors and clitic/stressed pronominals in BP is considered. Three picture identification experiments with children (3-7 years old) and one with adults are reported. The results of the Experiments 1 and 2 suggest that se is recognized as a reflexivity marker at an early age; that 5 year olds interpret it locally in embedded clauses; and children s susceptibility to the presence of an intervening element in the binding domain. The results of Experiment 3 (with adults and children) suggest that the marking of reflexivity by si (a non-verbal argument anaphor, mainly with the intensifier mesmo), and ele(a) mesmo(a) favor local interpretation. Regarding the stressed pronoun, it was verified the main clause subject is the most accessible antecedent for adults and the local subject is the most accessible antecedent for children. A theoretical account is presented, which integrates reflexivity and the accessibility of the 3rd person object stressed pronoun in in BP.
