[en] WHAT MAKES OBJECT RELATIVE CLAUSE AND OBJECT WH-QUESTIONS DIFFICULT FOR CHILDREN TO PROCESS?: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY FOCUSING ON SLI (SPECIFIC LANGUAGE IMPAIRMENT) / [pt] O QUE TORNA ORAÇÕES RELATIVAS E INTERROGATIVAS DE OBJETO DE DIFÍCIL PROCESSAMENTO PARA CRIANÇAS?: UM ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL COM FOCO NO DEL (DÉFICIT ESPECÍFICO DA LINGUAGEM)VANESSA GOUVEIA RIBEIRO 08 November 2012 (has links)
[en] The comprehension of object relative clauses and objects WH-questions in Brazilian Portuguese is investigated. Being the processing of these sentences highly costly, it causes comprehension difficulties, especially for SLI children. Processing cost is characterized on the basis of an integrated model of on-line linguistic computation, incorporating minimalist assumptions. The working hypothesis is that the processing cost of such structures can be differentiated as a function of the type of features of the elements involved in the syntactic computation, and the possibility of the immediate mapping of DPs onto background information. An element of the same kind of the moved constituent, when situated between the canonical and the final position of the latter, would lead to high processing cost, in the light of the Extended Relativized Minimality Principle. It was then predicted that the presence of an intervening pronominal DP would facilitate comprehension. Moreover, the possibility was considered of an intervening element to allow the anticipation of a verb/object relation before the object position was found and the antecedent reactivated, thereby facilitating processing. 71 children (aged 7–10) were tested by means of MABILIN. An experiment aiming at verifying those predictions was conducted with 20 children identified as language impaired and 20 typically developing children. A significant improvement in performance could be attested when the intervening element was a pronominal DP, particularly in the SLI group, and when integration with background information was possible. Reading material to children with language difficulties is presented, which is based on these results.

[en] This research aims at analyzing the knowledge and use of
the conjunctive connectors as, although, but and because by
deaf people, considering LIBRAS - Brazilian sign language -
as their first language, in a Portuguese as a second
language (L2) teaching-learning approach . Based on the
functionalism model and on the argumentative semantics, it
starts testing adolescent and adult deaf informants,
students of some private schools in Rio de Janeiro, from
the the 5th to the 8th grade, who demonstrate their
performance in the usage of these connectors in the written
form of the Portuguese language. Through the tests results
we could verify that their competence in the use of
conjunctive connectors elements relates to linguistic
facts, such as lexical, syntactic and textual-semantic
issues, and to extralinguistic facts, such as school level,
deafness level, age, proficiency level at LIBRAS and
Portuguese language, and also to the kind of test applied.
It has been noticed that the informants who know LIBRAS
have a better performance in Portuguese. Eventually, it is
highlighted the importance of reflections on this theme to
researches on the Portuguese teaching-learning process as a
second language for the deaf, as well as to the
implementation of actions concerning changes in the current
Brazilian methodologies.

[pt] DEIXA A VIDA ME LEVAR... UM JEITO BRASILEIRO DE LIDAR COM A INCERTEZA: UMA DESCRIÇÃO DE ASPECTOS DA CULTURA E DO COMPORTAMENTO DOS BRASILEIROS COMO CONTRIBUIÇÃO PARA A ÁREA DE PORTUGUÊS PARA ESTRANGEIROSMARCIA ARAUJO ALMEIDA 02 June 2017 (has links)

[en] The aim of this research is to establish which cultural aspects from Brazillian society related in the Capoeira Game can be accessed by foreigner capoeira students to acquire Intercultural Competence through a qualitative/etnography analysis of its rituals based in Culture, Interculturalism and Multiculturalism concepts (Bennet and Hall), culture categories (Hofstede and Lewis) and intercultural competence (Bennett) and the application of questionnaires to capoeira practitioners from several nationalities in Manhattan, New York City. Such aspects are noticed by the foreign capoeira players and help them to acquire intercultural competence and to learn Portuguese as a Second Language for foreigners.

[en] AUTOMATIC TEXT CATEGORIZATION BASED ON TEXT MINING / [pt] CATEGORIZAÇÃO AUTOMÁTICA DE TEXTOS BASEADA EM MINERAÇÃO DE TEXTOSFABIO DE AZEVEDO SOARES 15 July 2014 (has links)
[en] Text Categorization, one of the tasks performed in Text Mining, can be described as the achievement of a function that is able to assign a document to the category, previously defined, to which it belongs. The main goal of building a taxonomy of documents is to make easier obtaining relevant information. However, the implementation and execution of Text Categorization is not a trivial task: Text Mining tools are under development and still require high technical expertise to be handled, also having great significance in a Text Mining process, the language of the documents should be treated with the peculiarities of each idiom. Yet there is great need for tools that provide proper handling to Portuguese of Brazil. Thus, the main aims of this work are to research, propose, implement and evaluate a Text Mining Framework for Automatic Text Categorization, capable of assisting the execution of knowledge discovery process and provides language processing for Brazilian Portuguese.

[en] THE STATEMENT OF AN UNFAVOURABLE OPINION IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE AND ITS INSERTION IN THE STUDIES OF PORTUGUESE AS SECOND LANGUAGE FOR FOREIGNERS PL2E / [pt] A ELABORAÇÃO DA OPINIÃO DESFAVORÁVEL EM PORTUGUÊS DO BRASIL E SUA INSERÇÃO NOS ESTUDOS DE PORTUGUÊS COMO SEGUNDA LÍNGUA PARA ESTRANGEIROS PL2EPATRICIA MARIA CAMPOS DE ALMEIDA 28 May 2007 (has links)
desfavorável, a saber: 1. Opinião desfavorável direta; 2.
Opinião desfavorável indireta; 3. Falsa opinião
positiva; 4. Não manifestação de opinião. Além disso,
foram identificadas formulações periféricas que, ao
acompanharem as categorias listadas, têm como
objetivos amenizar o impacto da opinião desfavorável e
salvaguardar a face dos interlocutores. A pesquisa
[en] Nowadays, in the field of foreign language (FL) teaching,
it is understood
that a good user of an FL should develop a group of
competences such as
grammatical, sociolinguistic, discoursive and strategic
competences. The need to
consider all of them derives from the fact that the
success in a real intercultural
communication cannot be assured through linguistic
knowledge only (Meyer,
2002). This thesis investigates how an unfavourable
opinion can be expressed and
also which linguistic elements are used and in which
contexts this kind of opinion
is given. Our aim, thus, is to propose a model of table
that provides an
understanding of the strategies used in the act of stating
an unfavourable opinion.
The concepts from systemic functional Grammar related to
the context, as well as
those of Pragmatics, were paramount to this research. The
data - gathered by
means of a Discourse completion test - allowed us to
identify four categories that
classify the ways of giving an unfavourable opinion,
namely: 1. direct
unfavourable opinion; 2. indirect unfavourable opinion; 3.
false positive opinion;
4. absence of opinion. Furthermore, peripheral
formulations were identified.
Coexisting with the categories listed above, they aim at
diminishing the impact of
an unfavourable opinion and preserving the interlocutors´
face. The research
showed that - in the context of foreign language teaching -
the knowledge of the
different acts of speaking is necessary, including the act
of stating an unfavourable
opinion, so that proper communication can be established
in real-life situations.

[pt] Este trabalho trata do pronome interrogativo que no
português falado no Brasil
atualmente. Já foram detectadas sete diferentes formas de
estruturas interrogativas

[en] There have been detected many structures for the interrogative pronoun que
(que, o que, o que é que, que é que, o que que, que que, o quê in-situ) in spoken
brazilian portuguese. This paper focusses on the pragmatic functions of these forms,
trying to deprehend the mechanism of their use, so that they can been properly

[pt] O tema desta pesquisa é a realização dos atos diretivos,
em língua oral, na
cultura brasileira. A partir de pressupostos da teoria dos
atos de fala, da
sociolingüística interacional, do interculturalismo e da
antropologia social,
diretividade e
identificamos os motivos sociais/contextuais e culturais
que influenciam as
construções desses enunciados. Mostramos, ainda, a
[en] The theme of our research is the use of the directives
speech acts, in oral
language, in the brazilian portuguese. On the basis of
theoretical assumptions of
speech-act theory, interactional sociolinguistics,
interculturalism and cultural
anthropology, we describe and analyze the formulations of
the directives speech
acts and also the strategies that soften or intensify the
imposition implied in the
use of those acts. We also classified the types of
requests and orders found in our
corpus according to the level of directness and identified
the social /contextual
and cultural reasons which influence the construction of
those utterances. We
showed, as well, the importance of this research in the
teaching/learning process
of portuguese as a second language.

[en] IMAGES OF THE BRAZILIAN BUILT BY THE FOREIGNERS: FROM THE STEREOTYPES IN THE QUALIFICATIVE EXPRESSIONS / [pt] IMAGENS DO BRASILEIRO CONSTRUÍDAS PELO ESTRANGEIRO: DOS ESTEREÓTIPOS NAS EXPRESSÕES QUALIFICATIVASLARISSA SANTIAGO DE SOUSA 05 February 2018 (has links)
[en] This paper investigates the stereotypes about the Brazilian people built by the foreign students in the Portuguese as a Second Language Course at PUC-Rio. The objective was to identify the qualificative expressions in relation to the Brazilian culture - specially represented by the adjectives, verbs and adverbs -, analyse these evaluations from the students before and after having been immersed in Brazil, and show how they can interfere in the intercultural communication. The analysis revealed that: (i) a big part of the foreign students had built a stereotyped image of the Brazilians and Brazil; (ii) the stereotypes have to do with the information collected by the students in the media, i.e. TV, newspaper, internet and also through Brazilian friends, Brazilians in general and relatives; (iii) the images built by the foreigners are positive in relation to the Brazilian and negative when it comes to Brazil; (iv) the positive attitude in relation to the image of the Brazilians and the exposure to the Brazilian culture make the foreigners interaction in the intercultural situations with Brazilian students easy.

referidos atos. / [en] The objective of the present work is to describe the realization of the
apologies, in oral Brazilian Portuguese in order to aid the teaching of this
language as a second language to foreigners. Our corpus is extracted from 16
episodes of the TV series A Grande Família, Os Aspones and Toma Lá Dá Cá by
Rede Globo de Televisão. Based on a hybrid theoretical basis, which counts on
contributions from Pragmatics, Interactional Sociolinguistics, Intercultural Studies
and Social Anthropology, we have described and analyzed the construction of the
expressive acts of apologies found in our corpus as well as interpreted the reasons
which lead the native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese to choose the strategies
which help fulfill the acts previously mentioned.
