Idag är krigföringens principer en vedertagen del av svensk doktrin. Så har det inte alltid varit. För ungefär ett sekel sedan tvistade militära tänkare i väst om det överhuvudtaget fanns något som kunde kallas för krigföringens principer. Det finns än idag de som hävdar att det inte finns några principer, eller att krigföring är en konst och inte en vetenskap. I Försvarsmaktens doktriner är dessa principer dock en väsentlig komponent. Detta arbete skildrar hur principerna gradvis tog sig in i Försvarsmaktens reglementen och doktriner för armén samt belyser hur de olika principerna dök upp, byttes ut och fick olika innebörd sedan de först implementerats i ett svenskt reglemente 1924. / The aim of this essay is to outline how the principles of war were implemented in Swedish army regulations and doctrines. The essay attempts to answer the following questions: What trends can be identified with regards to the importance of different principles? How have the principles been understood historically? The material used consists mainly of regulations and doctrine for the Swedish army from different parts of the 20th century. The method of the author is to analyze and compare the different regulations to come to conclusions about the importance of the principles of war in Swedish military history. The results of the essay indicate that surprise is the principle that has been a part of Swedish regulations the longest. This in turn could indicate that surprise is the principle that is the least susceptible to change in tactics and modernization.

Denna studie behandlar den grundläggande principen överraskning som anses vara en av de klassiska principerna i krig och krigföring. Studien syftar till att ge författaren och läsaren en fördjupad kunskap i begreppet överraskning samt klarlägga skillnad mellan österländsk och västerländsk syn. Inledningsvis kommer överraskning beskrivas utifrån utvald litteratur för att sedan analyseras och jämföras för att få fram skillnader eller likheter mellan de två motparter som väst och öst står för. Mot slutet drar författaren ett antal slutsatser som besvarar frågeställningen finns det någon skillnad i synen på överraskning mellan västerländskt och österländskt synsätt? Avslutningsvis diskuteras resultatet och författaren ger förslag på ny forskning med anknytning till ämnet. / This study deals with the subject of military theory and the essence of the classic principles of warfare. Since ancient times, surprise, has had a profound effect on how different nations and people have fought and made use of tactics and today still, surprise is something that characterize the modern battlefield. As an example, one can mention the attack on the World Trade Centre on the 11th of September 2001 where consequences had major effects on the political and strategic level. In conflicts around the globe surprise attacks are not uncommon and we continue to exploit this principle, although weapons technology and tactics have evolved. The focus of this work has been to analyze the principle and make a comparative analysis between Eastern and Western thoughts and approach. Is there a difference or do both sides have the same view on the principle of surprise? This study is based on ideas from recognized military theorists Carl von Clausewitz and Sun Tzu as well as doctrines from the former Soviet Union and now Russia and Sweden. The purpose of this study is mainly to give the author a deeper knowledge of the subject. The author’s will is to later use this knowledge in his profession. Initially, the author has studied theorists and doctrine in order to describe their perception of the concept. After that the author has analyzed the results and come to certain conclusions. Finally, the author discussed the results and also explains what he believe that future studies on this topic should focus on.

The research regarding the six day war and the aerial operations named Operation Moked is extensive but there are certain shortcomings in the research that examines both the operation and the principle of surprise. The aim of this paper is to contribute to this research by utilising existing military theories on the principle of surprise in order to identify indicators that are representative of surprise.  These indicators are thereafter used in a study of Operation Moked in order to examine the extent of in which the principle was utilised. The result of this research goes to show that the principle of surprise was utilised in great extent by Israel during Operation Moked. / Det har bedrivits mycket forskning kring Sexdagarskriget och det lyckade israeliska luftanfallet Operation Moked men det finns vissa brister i forskningen på operationen kopplat till krigföringsprincipen överraskning. Denna uppsats syftar till att bidra till detta forskningsläge genom att använda militära teoribildningar kring principen överraskning och bryta ut indikatorer på vad som kännetecknar principen. Dessa indikatorer används sedan i en studie av Operation Moked för att undersöka i vilken utsträckning principen tillämpades. Resultatet av denna undersökning påvisar att överraskning tillämpades i stor utsträckning av Israel under Operation Moked.

Överraskning är en av krigföringens grundprinciper. Svårigheterna i att förutse överraskning ligger i dess natur och har studerats genom historiken utan större resultat. Finns inte förmågan att återhämta efter överraskning är risken överhängande för förlust och forskningen brister i hur denna förmåga skapas. Syftet med uppsatsen är att förklara hur det kom sig att Israel lyckades återhämta efter överraskningen 1973 och vinna på slagfältet. En teorikonsumerande, utfallsförklarande processpårning används för att förklara det unika utfallet. Det teoretiska ramverket innefattar teorier om flexibilitet och taktik. Resultatet av analysen påvisar att Israel lyckades återhämta efter överraskningen trots bristande flexibilitet. Den avgörande mekanismen fanns i den moraliska faktorn i krigföringsförmågan, nämligen skicklighet. Den enskildes skicklighet överbryggade bristerna samt genomsyrade hela den israeliska organisationen och dess krigföringsförmåga. Tillsammans ger syftet och resultatet en ökad förståelse för vad som kan krävas av en underlägsen aktör som enskilt vill undvika att förlora på slagfältet.

An amphibious assault can open new fronts and totally change the operational and strategic situation. Amphibious assault often depends on the principles of surprise and tempo.   The principles of war, surprise and tempo are the main focus in this thesis. The context consists of the operational type, amphibious assault. The main problem that the study will try to answer is the paradox that theorists highlight these principles as essential conditions for amphibious operations, but they have not developed specifically why and how. In this context it is interesting because there are a number of paradoxes between the type of operation and the principles.   To be able to examine the principles a higher degree of concreteness has to be applied. This is done by examining what other modern theorists has developed on the principles. The most prominent factors then become the thesis operationalized indicators that provides the analysis tool for the thesis. The theory will then be tested by analysing two case studies, Operation Shingle in Anzio and Operation Chromite in Inchon.   The result shows that the indicators of surprise consists of unexpected acting, diversion and operations security. The results of the case study regarding this comes to the conclusions that unexpected acting and operation security are key factors. The indicators of tempo are rapid decision-making and quick physical movement. The case study result indicates that both are criterias for success and are based on a mutual relationship between the indicators.

The aim of this study is to examine how the employees at Nordiska Kompaniet view the concept of world-class service and how they are motivated to deliver this level of service. Service is a central part of the tourism industry and the employees at Nordiska Kompaniet are educated in how to treat tourists, visitors and customers so that they will be able to deliver best possible service. The study is constructed on a total of eleven semi-structured interviews with employees at Nordiska Kompaniet in Stockholm. The interviews have contributed forward gaining a deeper understanding regarding the employees thoughts about the importance of the term word- class service within retail tourism sector. The study also highlights the importance of service education within retail tourism sector and the creation of customer value for international tourists, visitors and costumers. The collected empirical material has been interpreted using theoretical points which are motivation, identification, customer value and world-class service.   The result shows a unified opinion among employees at Nordiska Kompaniet, Stockholm regarding the meaning of world-class service and how they think world-class service should be delivered to tourists, visitors and customers. However, there is divided opinion regarding the motivation the employees receive at Nordiska Kompaniet’s internal service education.

Forskningen kring hantering av osäkerhet är ett brett område som spänner över flera fält. Innovation, anpassning, användandet av doktrin och metoder för ledning utgör några exempel. Genom en bred teoribildning under det övergripande temat flexibilitet har den israeliske forskaren Meir Finkel presenterat ett nytt sätt att möta osäkerhet och överraskning. Denna enfallstudie söker genom en teorikonsumerande ansats belysa de övergripande förutsättningarna för flexibilitet inom den svenska försvarsmakten med två övergripande syften. Det första och huvudsakliga syftet är att identifiera styrkor och svagheter kopplat till flexibilitetsforskningen samt dra slutsatser om den utomvetenskapliga relevansen av dessa. Det andra syftet är att pröva Finkels teori mot en annan strategisk kontext och därigenom påvisa en möjlig utveckling av teorin. Med stöd av ett brett empiriskt underlag analyseras huvuddelen av de i teorin beskrivna aspekterna mot det valda fallet. Det erhållna resultatet innehåller såväl positiva som negativa delar vilkas betydelse diskuteras mot bakgrund av såväl förbättrad svensk försvarsförmåga som möjlig utveckling av teorin.

Operationsmiljön präglas av oförutsägbarhet och osäkerhet. Dessa faktorer kan leda till överraskning, antingen aktörsdriven eller som ett resultat av den komplexa dynamiken i operationsmiljön. Svensk operationskonst lyfter fram flexibilitet för att hantera effekterna av överraskning. Hur den förstås i operationsplanering blir avgörande för hur effekterna av överraskning hanteras. Denna teorikonsumerande enfallstudie söker svar på frågorna hur flexibilitet förstås av officerare i funktioner vid insatsstaben. Uppsatsen söker svar på hur flexibilitet och förutsättningar för den förstås på operativ nivå i relation till Meir Finkels teori om flexibilitet. Undersökningen visar att officerare i operationsplanering på operativ nivå förstår flexibilitet i linje med Finkels flexibilitetsteori. Undersökningen påvisar att öppenhet, kognitiv flexibilitet och systemförståelse är särskilt framträdande teman som skapar förutsättningar för flexibilitet.

Military theories regarding surprise has a conceptual way of being described which may influence the effect that surprise actually has on a specific command level. Without sufficient explanations there might be unclear reasons for the conversion of these theories into practice. The existing research shows an increased possibility of surprise within the strategical command level and how to achieve it. It also shows the absence of research regarding what causes surprise on tactical command level, even if some theories describe surprise as being more effective at that level. Special operations can be included within the tactical command level and may offer an explanation. This case study examines which causes may lead to surprise on a tactical command level by analyzing descriptions of special operations within the conduct of regular warfare. With theoretical and empirical references, surprise was achieved in both of the selected cases. The results of the study can be divided in to two categories: the direct and the indirect causes. The categorization gives a further explanation in how to better understand surprise within a specific command level. The study contributes to the existing research by revealing a better understanding for commanders within a tactical command level in how to achieve surprise.

Today's technological and unstable society places greater demands on military organizations to deal with military surprises and uncertainties. One method of dealing with these problems is by incorporating flexibility. Researcher Meir Finkel presents a theoretical framework that advances flexibility as a governing principle that enables military organizations to handle surprises and uncertainties. However, for military organisations there are two main problems with applying new methods on how they should act, firstly to translate it into concepts and operations, secondly to infuse the range of doctrines and regulations to influence the entire organization. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to increase the knowledge of how flexibility is applied in central military governing documents. And, to discuss any correlation between the documents and what effect the implementation may have on the organization’s flexibility. Since the Swedish Armed forces explicitly strive for flexibility, Finkel's theoretical framework aims to illustrate how flexibility has been applied. This was achieved by examining Sweden’s operational and naval doctrine through a qualitative text analysis. The result shows that flexibility plays a significant role in both Sweden's operational and naval doctrine as it has successfully been applied. Nonetheless, both doctrines present elements that may affect flexibility negatively and could therefore, limit the efficiency to deal with military surprises and uncertainties.
