“TEACH ME HOW TO CURSE MY ENEMIES”: POLITICAL WOMEN AND THEATRICAL POWER IN SHAKESPEARE’S FIRST TETRALOGY

Moore, Elizabeth 10 1900 (has links)
<p>Drawing on Katherine Eggert’s discussion of Joan la Pucelle’s dramatic skills, this thesis argues that, through effective performances on the characters around them, the women of Shakespeare’s first tetralogy achieve and exercise extensive political power and that the male project of silencing these women through vilification and condemnation is an attempt to diminish that political power. The women in these plays are not born to the power they achieve, and it is not bestowed upon them by others. The female characters of the first tetralogy use theatrical power to enter and, in some cases, dominate the masculine world of political authority through their theatrical skill. They persuade, seduce, manipulate, and argue their ways through the highest circles of political authority and, transgressing patriarchal notions of political authority, they wield decidedly unfeminine power.</p> <p>These plays demonstrate the potential public impact and rebellious or resistant power of the female voice. In the first chapter of this thesis, I argue that these characters, through dramatically effective speech, exert significant female political agency. In the second chapter, I further contend that the male project of silencing these women's voices, expressed through gendered slurs and accusations of sexual misconduct, is a method of subduing the women’s political power. By examining the subversive women of Shakespeare's first tetralogy, this thesis explores the ways in which these characters use voice to enter and, in some cases, dominate the masculine world of political authority.</p> / Master of Arts (MA)

Sverige och smygrasismen : En retorisk analys av ämnena integration och invandring i svensk press / Sweden and the hidden racism : A rhetorical analysis of the topics of integration and immigration in the Swedish press

Brunnström, Josefine January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how three Swedish news publications writes about integration and immigrants. The news articles were analyzed with a rhetorical analysis. The method was supplemented with theories of media and ethnicity, agenda setting theory and gatekeeping theory. This study resulted in the conclusion that racist discourses are found in the three news publications, regardless of political color, writer or article genre. Many of the articles makes a clear division of "us and them", where "them" is defined by the text's "us", who are often Swedes. "Them" is described by the attributes that ”us” don't want to be associated with. Immigrants are often portrayed as victims of their culture or as a threat to Western society. There is also a clear link between immigrants, Islam and Muslims irrespective of where the immigrants come from. The articles on integration continues to talk of immigrants as a unified group but these articles are accusing politicians and organizations to a greater extent, for the integration problematics. Both topics are discussed mainly on the basis of values and feelings and statistics showing the whole context is missing.

Ganame, Noufou 12 September 2019 (has links)
"The ministry of the deacon has occupied an integral place since the origins of the Church of the Assemblies of God of Burkina Faso until today (1921-2017). When the American missionary criss-crossed the land for the proclamation of the Gospel, once he registered a solid nucleus of Christians in the square, he established a deacon to whom he gave the prerogatives of pastors, for they were made rare. We can affirm that in addition to the Holy Spirit's work, the foundation of the Church of the Assemblies of God in Burkina Faso is based on the life, property and skills of many of our patriarchs who deacon. The Church today has more than 4,000 pastors, but lives a conflict of leadership. The cause of this conflict is the difficulty in recognizing the place and role of the deacon. The ministry of the deacon being recognized or at least having traces in the apostolic church, it is a necessity for us to reorient our reflections on the present situation in the light of the Holy Scriptures. In other words, this study aims to understand the practice of this ministry of the diaconate in the Church of the Assemblies of God, and to bring a theological explanation based on the experience of the early Church by referring to the Acts of the Apostles 6,1-7. Our approach calls for a double method. The first known as biblical exegesis served to understand the practice of diaconate in the early Church. The second so-called empirical method allowed us to have an understanding of this ministry in the Church of the Assemblies of God of Burkina Faso. For this second method, the data collected in the field allowed to evaluate the perception of the actors rather than to limit ourselves to our presuppositions. From these empirical results, we have been able to establish a dialogue, which has generated points of consensus on the one hand and points of divergence on the other. The thesis ends with the compilation of the results of our two methods which served to make a theological interpretation and propose perspectives in order to improve the ministry of the deacon in favor of the local churches of the Assemblies of God of Burkina Faso. The theological interpretation of these results has also made it possible to diagnose the hold of traditional Burkina culture in the functionally vital churches. This study, we dare to believe that it presents the ministry of the deacon in the most biblically understandable, dynamic and creative way."

A political National Day speech: Swedish values, citizenship &amp; Swedish language : A critical discourse analysis of Ulf Kristersson’s National Day Speech from 2023 based on an otherization process

Diaz, Elin January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify which discourses became visible and how and if these discourses contributed to a process of otherization in Ulf Kristersson's National Day speech from the year 2023. To accomplish the study, two questions were used whose purpose was to identify discourses that can be linked to otherization, as well as how these can be understood based on a process of otherization. In my results and analysis I applied van Dijk's critical discourse analysis and discourse structures as well as theories of otherization and van Dijk's ingroup-outgroup polarization. In the result, three discourses were identified: discourse about citizenship, discourse about the Swedish language and discourse about Swedish values, which could be linked to an otherization. The study identified an "us" and "them" through discourse structures. “Us” was symbolized with Swedish values, tolerance, norms and citizenship, in contrast to "them" who were symbolized as criminals, liars and with deviant values. "The others" were portrayed as different from "us". The conclusion of my study is that the process of otherization in Ulf Kristersson's National Day speech was direct but mostly indirect.

Mediebilder av Malmöförorter : En kritisk diskursanalys av medias beskrivning av tre förorter i Malmö och dess invånare / Media Images of Malmö Suburbs : A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Media's Description of three Suburbs in Malmö and its Inhabitants

Grbic, Marija January 2024 (has links)
In this paper I have sought to investigate how media portrays three different boroughs inMalmö city built up during the so-called “million programme”, namely: Lindängen, Nydalaand Rosengård and its residents, based on the publications of the newspapers Sydsvenskanand Aftonbladet. The means used for the investigation are mainly critical discourse analysiscoupled with previous research and theories. In order to achieve a broad description of theproblem, this paper has centered around the five central themes of: environment &amp;architecture, living environment, education &amp; worklessness, criminality &amp; crime and “Weand them”. The resulting conclusion of this study is that the three named burroughs areconsistently portrayed in the aforementioned media outlets as areas overrun bysocioeconomic degradation, criminal activity and problematic societal relationships. Theresidents are portrayed as lacking in hygiene, with a low level of education, and of foreignorigin. These types of descriptions in media enhance negative stereotypes and contribute to animage of these areas as containing inhabitants which are deviant and isolated from society asa whole.

Två sidor av samma mynt : En diskursinspirerad innehållsanalys av syriska och ukrainska flyktingar i Dagens Nyheter / Two Sides of the Same Coin : A Discourse-inspired Content Analysis of Syrian and Ukrainian Refugees in Dagens Nyheter

Vique, Ramón January 2024 (has links)
Således visar min undersökning hur dessa två flyktinggrupper tilldelas skilda positioner inom samma diskurs, vilket praktiskt taget, avgör deras handlingsmöjligheter i Sverige. / In recent years, the world has been filled with violent conflicts, hence millions of people have fled their homes. The war in Syria and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have led to thousands of refugees seeking refuge in Sweden. Previous research on immigration in the print press hasshown that the general attitude towards refugees has been negative. The purpose of the essay is based on this context and seeks answers to the following questions: How is the discourse around Syrian and Ukrainian refugees constructed? Which subject-positions are enabled? and How are these portrayed and represented within the discourse based on an “us and them” perspective? Based on a discourse-inspired content analysis, I have analyzed a total of 24 articles published in Sweden's most prominent morning newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, during the two time periods of which each refugee group fled to Sweden. Through discourse and representation theories, I found that the representations of Syrian and Ukrainian refugees differed significantly from an "us and them" perspective. The former was portrayed as a "problem" that required restrictive, political actions and the latter as "equal" and privileged. Thus, my research shows how these two refugee groups are assigned different positions within the same discourse, which determines their possibilities for practical action in Sweden.

Lawsuits in Pauls theological ethics : a historical and literary interpretation of 1 Corinthians 6:1-11

Oh, JungHwan 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As human society develops, people often face unpleasant affairs in their daily lives. However, when they do not solve matters, they might resort to solving such matters through lawsuits. In the same way, serious problems sometimes appear in the church, so that Christians are forced to rely upon lawsuits. Different opinions can be suggested regarding going to the court to solve problems in Christian communities. Many people use 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 to support that Christians should not have lawsuits against fellow Christians. The question this dissertation investigates is, did Paul really say that Christians should not have lawsuits and should not go to the secular court? In the first century C.E. a situation occurred in the Corinthian community where believers tried to solve trivial matters among themselves in a secular court, rather than within the community (1 Corinthians 6:1-11). In chapter 2, a general understanding of litigation in the first century C.E. is treated in different categories, focusing on the first century Roman society. This chapter sketches the Roman legal context for understanding civil lawsuits that happened in the Corinthian community. Chapter 3 concentrates on the interpretation of 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 as the text in focus in this study, in the light of its historical context. In particular, this chapter investigates various factors pertaining to the nature of lawsuits in Corinth with regard to the historical context. In chapter 4, 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 is examined in a literary analysis and subjected to an exegetical study. These literary devices allow for in depth investigation of the text, and structural and hermeneutical findings regarding Paul’s argument is presented. In chapter 5 the lawsuit is investigated in the light of two theological aspects, namely eschatology and ethics. Paul uses these two important notions to instruct the Corinthian believers regarding their new identity as God’s people and suggest the significant principle how to live as Jesus followers in their lives. In sum, according to 1 Corinthians 6:1-11, Paul argues that lawsuits are not appropriate in the community of the faithful because it is harmful to the unity and the purity of the community. However, Paul’s concern is not for the lawsuits as such, but for how believers should behave and live ethically as Jesus followers before God. Believers as God’s people have to reveal the love of God through their behaviour and in their daily lives.

Främligarna mitt ibland oss : En kritisk diskursanalys om hur asylsökande konstrueras i svenska lokaltidningar. / The strangers that live among us

Holst, Simon, Bingöl, Mizgin January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate how local newspapers in Sweden frame newsstories involving asylumseekers and how the asylseekers in those stories are constructed from a postcolonial theoryperspective. Furthermore this thesis aims to analys and show the connection between the written word in the articles and a larger, social dimension where ideologies compete for cultural hegemony. To match the aims of this thesis we used a critical discourse analysis, more specificly one influenced by van Dijks socio-cognitive CDA and applied it to five articles from three different newspapers. Our analysis showed that the articles constructed the asylumseekers as Others, and created a dinstinct line between the asylumseekers and the other participants in the texts. This line, based on a constructed community including the article, the reader and some of the participants but excluding the asylumseekers, got significant meaning in the articles when the asylumseekers got identified as a homogenic social group. A perspecive coming from the constructed community and not from themselfes and therefor denying the asylsumseekers their right to define themselves.

Accounting for anxiety : an analysis of an early first-century material ethic from Matt 6:19-34

Tryon, Denzil Bruce 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh (Old and New Testament))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / This paper undertakes a detailed study of Matt 6:19-34 for the specific purpose of accounting for the unique context and content of the material/financial ethic being articulated here by Jesus. The passage, made up of four pericopes, is located within the first of the five discourses of Jesus recorded in Matthew’s Gospel in which Jesus evidently articulates the ethical standards required of the children of the emerging Kingdom of God. The need for such a study stems from an understanding that the passage, indeed the Sermon as a whole, has been treated by traditional scholarship in a somewhat distanced and abstract manner i.e. it has been read without adequate cognisance being taken of the particular socio-linguistic and socio-historical context in which it was originally formulated and articulated. Relatively recent social-scientific and socio-historical New Testament scholarship, however, has provided a specific set of interpretive tools that enable a modern reader to make a far more dynamic and context-sensitive interpretation possible. Accordingly, this paper undertakes a socio-rhetorical analysis of Matt 6:19-34, together with a social-scientific and socio-historic/financial/religious analysis of the eastern Mediterranean world of late Second Temple times. Together these interpretive tools shed new light on the text and provide the opportunity for re-reading that text in a way that, hopefully, more closely articulates the ethic as an original audience might have heard it. Specifically, the use of these interpretive tools provide insights into why it was that Jesus explicitly prohibited worry, some six times in the passage, amongst the children of the Kingdom concerning the provision of their food, drink and clothing i.e. the tools provide something of an explanation for both the rhetorical force of the ethic and the underlying realities that gave rise to its formulation in the first place. These insights are then applied in an attempt at formulating a dynamically equivalent ethic that might be appropriated and applied by present day children of the Kingdom reading the passage today.
