An Optimality Theory Approach to Reduplication in Formosan Languages

本論文調查四個台灣南島語,包括巴宰語(Pazih)、阿美語(Amis)、排灣語(Paiwan)、邵語(Thao),記錄並分析在這些語言之中各種不同的重疊詞形式,並以當今的音韻理論來分析所採得的語料,特別是從優選理論的觀點來研究。 本文的調查發現,這四個語言的重疊詞形式非常的類似,它們都應用了Ca-重疊及右向重疊作為構詞的手段,只有在巴宰語及邵語可以觀察到其他不同的重疊形式。 就Ca-重疊而言,本文認為固定的元音[a]乃是由於「預先指明」(pre-specification)的結果,也就是其在底層形式就已經連結到重疊成分音節的韻母,本文並說明以「無標記浮現」(The Emergence of the Unmarked)來解釋固定音段(e.g. Chang 1998)的理論有其缺點。 右向重疊在不同的語言中,所呈現的型態並不完全相同。以重疊成分的形式來看,可以分成三類:-CV.CV-、-C.CV-與-CV-。巴則海語只呈現第一類的重疊成分,阿美語有第一及第二類的重疊成分,排灣語及邵語應用了三種的形式。本文認為右向重疊的功能既然相同,應當只有一套語法來支配。本文進而提出一組制約排序,順利分析了在不同語言中觀察到的右向重疊現象。 其他觀察到的重疊形式有:巴宰語的CV:-與CVCV-重疊及邵語的CV-重疊。巴宰語的CV:-重疊呈現了元音延長的現象,CVCV-重疊則是一種雙音節前綴重疊;邵語CV-重疊的重疊成分總是在詞基的倒數第二音節之前,此現象與其韻步結構有關。 本論文亦簡略描述分析四個語言所呈現的音韻現象,如音位系統、音節結構、重音、音變等。在音變方面,四個語言有許多相似處,如喉塞音增音、元音低降、滑音化等。本文利用優選理論來分析各語言的音韻系統。

從優選理論分析華語擬聲詞結構 / An optimality theory analysis of Mandarin onomatopoeia

本計畫擬於優選理論 (Prince & Smolensky 1993/2004) 框架下,探討現代華語擬聲詞在音韻上的特點與表現,並分析優選理如何論操作單音節及雙音節輸入項所衍生出的雙音節擬聲詞,進而完全或部分重疊成三音節及四音節華語擬聲詞。擬聲詞為模仿自然界中的聲音形成的詞彙,但並非隨意衍生形成,仍然需要遵循語言的構詞及音韻規律,才能衍生成為合法詞彙並順暢地使用。在華語音韻研究方面,歷來學者對於擬聲詞的討論並不豐富詳盡,因此本碩士論文便嘗試探討華語雙音節、三音節及四音節擬聲詞在音韻分析中的樣貌。 重疊在漢語擬聲詞中為極為常見的現象。如現代華語中單音節的「咕」與雙音節的「咕咕」;雙音節的「滴答」與四音節的「滴滴答答」。故擬聲詞衍生中的重疊機制為本計畫中主要討論議題,此外由於華語擬聲詞結構在音段選擇中展現一致性,故另聚焦於固定音段, 如邊音/l/及前元音/i/在現代華語擬聲詞中高度頻繁地出現,我將對其起源提出假設並分析,如現代華語「劈哩啪啦」的/l/及/i/。而華語雙音節擬聲詞的來源二分為單音節輸入項及雙音節輸入項亦為討論對象。 最後預期華語擬聲詞大致符合現代華語成詞的語法,但進行重疊時與實詞相異,語意因素不會成為衍生動機;經由優選理論分析,從音韻結構角度切入,不僅可了解華語擬聲詞衍生的制約排序,亦更加了解其音韻構詞規範,且與實詞如形容詞進行重疊時的制約排序進行比較,說明華語擬聲詞在衍生過程中傾向遵循邊緣音韻規則,與其他實詞多依據核心音韻 規則的狀況大異其趣。以此為基石去了解其他漢語方言對於擬聲成詞的標準,甚或研究日語、韓語中豐富的擬聲詞,便能構擬出擬聲成詞更具體且具有說服力的語法規則。 / In this thesis, the generation of Modern Mandarin disyllabic, trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic onomatopoeia under phonological viewpoint via Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993/2004) approach will be discussed. In my M.A. Thesis ‘An OT analysis of Mandarin Onomatopoeia’, four factors motivated this study. First, the different sources of Mandarin disyllabic onomatopoeia which I thought there are monosyllabic and disyllabic inputs aroused my interests. Second, there are some similarities of Mandarin onomatopoeia between Mandarin core lexicons. Third, the reduplication mechanism in Mandarin onomatopoeia will be taken as a main point in this study. For example, in Modern Mandarin ‘gu’ (Sound of bird sing once) will extend into ‘gugu’ (Sound of birdsong) under total reduplication. Finally, the issue concerning what will be the best choice when Mandarin onomatopoeia is reduplicated with fixed segmentism also plays an important role in this study. For instance, the /l/ and /i/ in Modern Mandarin’s ‘pilipala’ (Sound of many things falling). Onomatopoeias have their special function as sound-imitating icons. They are not the words which are formed by arbitrary but by the rules. They sometimes violate phonological structures of the language in which they occur; hence they belong to the peripheral phonology rather than core one. The Mandarin onomatopoeia is different from Mandarin content words; they are not motivated by semantic factors. So the Chinese onomatopoeia generation analysis via OT approach supplies not only the morpho-phonological constraints but also the comparison of peripheral words between content words. I would like to assume that the Mandarin onomatopoeia generation follows the peripheral phonological rules. This study will provide as a basement to study on other Chinese language’s onomatopoeia or even onomatopoeia in Tibetan, Japanese and Korean.

語境預測力對中文一詞多義處理歷程的影響:文句閱讀的眼動研究 / The influence of contextual predictability on processing Chinese polysemy: Eye movement experiments of sentence reading

本論文進行兩個眼動實驗,探討語境及多義特性在一詞多義處理歷程中扮演的角色。Frazier與Rayner(1990)認為一詞多義由於詞義間有重疊的語義屬性(sense overlap),因此處理詞義之初,會先以部分語義(partial specification)來理解,不需立即進行完整詞義的解讀,支持部分語義解讀假設(Immediate Partial Interpretation Hypothesis)。在Frisson 與Pickering(2001)所提出詞義未定模型(Underspecification Model)中,進一步說明語境在一詞多義中扮演的角色,認為一詞多義的語義提取會先以未定意義(underspecified meaning)解釋,在語義提取完畢後,語境才會介入詞義的選擇。本論文操弄語境導引和詞義重疊性,來探討一詞多義的詞義提取與選擇歷程。實驗一操弄句子中目標詞的語境預測力(可預測語境vs.不可預測語境)與詞義數量(單詞義vs.多詞義),記錄並分析目標詞與目標詞後區域的凝視時間。結果顯示:目標詞上的凝視時間多詞義顯著短於單詞義,支持部分語義解讀假設。然而,實驗一在目標詞後區域並未看到多詞義因延遲語義解讀(delayed semantic commitments)而造成抑制或競爭效果。實驗二就此現象與「一詞多義本身的詞義重疊程度」與「語境對一詞多義有無發生語義解讀的必要性」進行進一步探討。實驗二(同實驗一)操弄目標詞的語境預測力,與詞義的重疊程度(單義詞vs.中度詞義重疊vs.高度詞義重疊),並控制語境偏向次要詞義的情形。結果顯示:目標詞上的晚期眼動指標在中度詞義重疊(中vs.單)與高度詞義重疊(高vs.單)皆看到與語境預測力發生交互作用,顯示語境預測力的影響在晚期階段發生;目標詞後區域觀察到中度與高度詞義重疊(中vs.單;高vs.單)皆在不可預測語境下發生詞義抑制效果,符合詞義未定模型預期之延遲語義解讀效果,並在目標詞晚期眼動指標看到中度詞義重疊效果與高度詞義重疊效果(單-中 vs. 單-高)受語境影響有不同的效果,顯示詞義重疊會影響詞義選擇的必要性。總結本論文的結果:首先,一詞多義的語義提取符合部分語義解讀的假設,而語境介入的影響支持詞義未定模型的看法,即語境在語義提取之初並未介入影響,在語義未定的情況下,若語境內容有進行語義解讀之必要時,則會發生延遲語義解讀。其次,詞義的促進效果與一詞多義的詞義數量多寡有關,詞義數量減少時,詞義促進效果也隨之消失。最後,當語境偏向一詞多義的次要詞義時,延遲語義效果才會發生。 / This thesis conducted two eye movement experiments with the aim to investigate the role of context and multi-sense feature in processing polysemy. Frazier and Rayner (1990) suggested that, at the beginning of semantic processing, polysemy is comprehended with partial specification. There is no immediate need to process the complete word sense due to the sense overlap between senses. This viewpoint supports the Immediate Partial Interpretation Hypothesis. In Frisson and Pickering’s (2001) Underspecification Model, further elaboration were made on the role of context in the process of retrieving and selecting one of the word senses of a polysemy. The sense that is first retrieved from a polysemy is considered to be an underspecified meaning. It is after the semantic retrieval is finished that context is involved in selecting a word sense. This thesis manipulated context guidance and sense overlap, to further research on processing polysemy in terms of word sense retrieval and selection. Experiment One manipulated contextual predictability (predictable context vs. unpredictable context) and number of senses (one-sense, monosemy vs. many-sense, polysemy) of the target words in sentences. Fixation times of the target words and post-target areas were recorded and analyzed. Results showed that the fixation times on target words were significantly shorter for polysemy than for monosemy, supporting the Immediate Partial Interpretation Hypothesis. However, in Experiment One, there is no inhibitory or competitive effect on the post-target area, indicating that there is no effect of delayed semantic commitments while comprehending polysemy. In Experiment Two, we further investigated how this phenomenon is connected with the degree of sense overlap and whether context is necessary to activate semantic commitment for polysemy. Contextual predictability of target words and the degree of sense overlap (monosemy vs. moderate-sense-overlap vs. high-sense-overlap) were manipulated, with the former designed as in Experiment One. Specifically, the context was controlled to bias toward the subordinate sense. The results showed that there were interactions of sense overlap degree (both moderate-sense-overlap vs. monosemy and high-sense-overlap vs. monosemy) and contextual predictability on target words for later-stage indices. This suggests that contextual predictability effects at later stages. On the post-target areas, there were inhibitory effects found for moderate-sense-overlap vs. monosemy and for high-sense-overlap when the context is unpredictable. This finding supports the delayed effect of semantic commitments in the Underspecification Model. Moreover, effects of sense overlap (polysemy-moderate vs. polysemy-high) were modulated by contextual predictability on target words for later-stage processing, showing that sense overlap affects the necessity of semantic commitments. In conclusion, the semantic retrieval of polysemy can be best explained by the Immediate Partial Interpretation Hypothesis and the involvement of contextual constraint supports the Underspecification Model. That is, context does not affect the beginning phase of semantic retrieval. Since the senses are underspecified, delayed semantic commitment occurs if it is necessary to make semantic commitment in the context. Furthermore, the facilitation of senses is related to the number of a polysemy’s senses. As number of senses decreases, facilitation of senses wanes and disappears. Finally, delayed semantic commitment occurs only when the context biases towards a subordinate sense of the polysemy.

從優選理論分析台灣閩南語的重疊構詞 / An OT Approach to Reduplication in Taiwan Southern Min

本文以優選理論為框架探討閩南語三字組及四字組重疊構詞,三字組及四字組重疊構詞可分成完全重疊與部分重疊,重疊詞要緊鄰其對應詞基越好,此外,對於四字組部分重疊構詞有對整方向不一致的體現,筆者認為不同的制約排序會產生不同的重疊規則,並採用音韻共存理論(Cophonology Theory)來解釋閩南語多元的重疊構詞策略是由多個次語法運作的結果。在三字組重疊構詞,根據句法結構判斷主重音的位置,主重音的分佈影響重疊的規則,但有語意強調某成份時,主重音會轉移且會使原成份之本調喪失變成輕聲,有主重音的音節才可進行重疊構詞,同時,重疊詞要越緊鄰其對應詞基。在四字組完全重疊構詞,語義的強調與弱化影響詞基音節以及音步的重疊運作,音節與音步制約層級不同可解釋不同的重疊規則;在四字組部分重疊構詞,不同於過去研究以單一方向對整制約論證,筆者提出雙向的對整制約來解釋四字組部分重疊構詞。簡言之,本篇論文藉由優選理論的觀點,首度就閩南語重疊構詞提出一個整體分析。 / This thesis examines the derivation of the reduplication in Taiwan Southern Min under the framework of Optimality Theory. Reduplication can be divided into two categories. One is trisyllabic reduplication and the other is quadrisyllabic reduplication. Besides, each type of the trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic reduplication has both partial and full reduplication. This thesis adopts Cophonology Theory to account for the subgrammar of the divergent reduplications. Based on Locality Generalization, the reduplicant should be adjacent to its corresponding base. In trisyllabic reduplication, from the perspective of syntactic relation, stress affects the derivation of the reduplication. The primary stressed syllable is the only syllable which can be reduplicated. This thesis proposes constraint *RED(W) to require this condition. In quadrisyllabic reduplication, given the base is disyllable AB, semantic weakness and stress closely relate to the full reduplication AABB and ABAB. The different ranking of the Adjacency-BR-by-syllable and Adjacency-BR-by-foot explains the full reduplication. In quadrisyllabic partial reduplication, this thesis proposes the different edges alignment constraint Align(RED, R; Rightmost Monosyllabic Morpheme, L) and Align(RED, L; Leftmost Monosyllabic Morpheme, R) to explain ABAC and ACBC, respectively. In summary, based on the constraint-based theory, and the interaction of Nonhead stress, Focal stress, *RED(W), alignment, anchoring, adjacency, and contiguity constraint, this thesis has given a general explanation of the reduplication in Taiwan Southern Min.

重疊法應用於蛋白質質譜儀資料 / Overlap Technique on Protein Mass Spectrometry Data

癌症至今已連續蟬聯並高居國人十大死因之首,由於癌症初期病患接受適時治療的存活率較高,因此若能「早期發現,早期診斷,早期治療」則可降低死亡率。本文所引用的資料庫,是經由「表面強化雷射解吸電離飛行質譜技術」(SELDI-TOF-MS)所擷取建置的蛋白質質譜儀資料,包括兩筆高維度資料:一筆為攝護腺癌症,另一筆則為頭頸癌症。然而蛋白質質譜儀資料常因維度變數繁雜眾多,對於資料的存取容量及運算時間而言,往往造成相當沉重的負擔與不便;有鑑於此,本文之目的即在探討將高維度資料經由維度縮減後,找出分錯率最小化之分析方法,希冀提高癌症病例資料分類的準確性。 本研究分為實驗組及對照組兩部分,實驗組是以主成份分析(Principal Component Analysis,PCA)進行維度縮減,再利用支持向量機(Support Vector Machine,SVM)予以分類,最後藉由重疊法(Overlap)以期改善分類效果;對照組則是以支持向量機直接進行分類。分析結果顯示,重疊法對於攝護腺癌症具有顯著的改善效果,但對於頭頸癌症的改善效果卻不明顯。此外,本研究也探討關於蛋白質質譜儀資料之質量範圍,藉以確認專家學者所建議的質量範圍是否與分析結果相互一致。在攝護腺癌症中的原始資料,專家學者所建議的質量範圍以外,似乎仍隱藏著重要的相關資訊;在頭頸癌症中的原始資料,專家學者所建議的質量範圍以外,對於研究分析而言則並沒有實質上的幫助。 / Cancer has been the number one leading cause of death in Taiwan for the past 24 years. Early detection of this disease would significantly reduce the mortality rate. The database adopted in this study is from the Protein Mass Spectrometry Data Sets acquired and established by “Surface-Enhanced Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry” (SELDI-TOF-MS) technique, including the Prostate Cancer and Head/Neck Cancer Data Sets. However, because of its high dimensionality, dealing the analysis of the raw data is not easy. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to search a feasible method, putting the dimension reduction and minimizing classification errors in the same time. The data sets are separated into the experimental and controlled groups. The first step of the experimental group is to use dimension reduction by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), following by Support Vector Machine (SVM) for classification, and finally Overlap Method is used to reduce classification errors. For comparison, the controlled group uses SVM for classification. The empirical results indicate that the improvement of Overlap Method is significant in the Prostate Cancer case, but not in that of the Head/Neck case. We also study data range suggested according to the expert opinions. We find that there is information hidden outside the data range suggested by the experts in the Prostate Cancer case, but not in the Head/Neck case.

對搗亂行為處理效果的後設分析:以單一受試研究為主 / Effects of Treatment on Disruptive Behaviors:A Quantitative Synthesis of Single-Subject Researches

本研究使用PND和PEM對106篇單一受試研究進行後設分析,藉以了解實驗處理對於搗亂行為的影響效果。當研究者以原作者對於實驗處理效果的判斷作為效標時,使用PEM進行後設分析的效度是可以被接受的。本研究並分析實驗處理、研究特徵和受試者特徵與處理效果的關係,獲得下列研究結果:1.不同的實驗處理對降低搗亂行為有不同影響效果;2.研究設計、治療者身分、實驗情境、性別、受試者症狀特徵、搗亂行為種類對實驗處理效果有顯著影響。本研究建議學校人員接受有關於矯正搗亂行為的行為改變技術訓練是必要的,教師如能在教室活動中發展合適的課程和教導學生適當的溝通反應將有助於降低搗亂行為。 / A meta-analysis of 106 single-subject studies was conducted utilizing the PND and PEM approaches to investigate treatment effectiveness in reducing disruptive behavior. The validity of the PEM approach was acceptable based on original authors’ judgments of treatment effect. Variables were analyzed for covariation between treatment effectiveness and interventions, study characteristics, and subject characteristics. The following results were obtained: (a) interventions had significant influence on treatment effectiveness; (b) study design, intervenor, setting, sex, diagnosis, and target behaviors showed systematic relation to treatment outcomes. Suggestions are made that it is necessary for staff in schools to receive adequate training in treating disruptive behavior with the use of behavior modification techniques, and it is potentially useful for the reduction of disruptive behavior if teachers develop suitable curriculum and teach appropriate communicative responses in classroom activities.

行為改變技術對學業行為影響之個案實驗研究之統合分析 / A Quantitative Synthesis of Single-Subject Researches into the Effect of Behavioral Modification on Academic Behaviors

本研究藉由整合相關之單一受試實驗研究結果來探討行為改變技術對學業行為影響之效果。研究中用來計算效應量的方法有兩種:未重疊資料百分率(Percentage of Nonoverlapping Data, PND)、超過基線中點資料百分率(Percentage of Data Points Exceeding the Median of Preceding Baseline Phase, PEM)。為了檢視超過基線中點資料百分率方法應用在單一受試實驗研究統合分析上之可行性,本研究以各原研究作者之判斷為效標,對超過基線中點資料百分率與未重疊資料百分率之效度進行比較。 一共有98篇單一受試實驗研究納入統合分析。實驗的介入處理共分成:1.電腦輔助教學、2.合作學習、3.精熟學習、4.增強、5.自我控制訓練、6.情境學習、7.社會學習、8.策略教學、9.其他。研究顯示各種介入處理對於受試的學習行為皆產生正向效果。此外,超過基線中點資料百分率方法亦獲得支持適用於單一受試實驗研究之量化統合分析。 / The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of behavioral modification on academic behaviors by aggregating relevant conclusions of primary single-subject researches. Two approaches are used to generate estimations of effect sizes: the PND (Percentage of Nonoverlapping Data) approach, and the PEM (Percentage of Data Points Exceeding the Median of Preceding Baseline Phase). To test the applicability of the PEM approach, the validity of the PEM scores is compared with that of the PND scores by using the judgments of original authors as a validity criterion. A total of 98 studies are reviewed. Treatments include (a) computer assisted instruction; (b) cooperative learning; (c) mastery learning; (d) reinforcement; (e) self-control training; (f) situated learning; (g) social learning; (h) strategy instruction; and (i) others. Results indicate that all kinds of interventions produce positive effects on participants’ academic behaviors. In addition, the PEM approach is shown to be an appropriate method for a quantitative synthesis of single-subject researches.
