Media: Where the Voices of the Local and the Diaspora Meet : Women-led Protests in Iran from September 2022 to March 2023

Mitchell, Stefanie January 2023 (has links)
This degree project focuses on the representation and intersection of the voice of the Iranian local and the voice of the diaspora in international media, exploring the ‘unity’ of the local and the diaspora as put forth by media during the 2022 protests in Iran.  The death of Jinha Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman in police custody made international news headlines on 16 September 2022 and quickly became a transnational social movement for change against the repression of women in Iran. Making their ‘voices’ visible through the physical acts of protesting in the streets, burning their hijabs (headscarves) and cutting their hair, Iranian women carved out space for themselves in the local public sphere, but also on the global public sphere using social media, and by receiving international news coverage.  Data analysis of information gathered from five international news sources (BBC, Reuters, Al-Monitor, DW, and Al-Jazeera) during the first six months of the protests, highlights the role of international news media in informing audiences of unfolding events on the ground and as a vital platform for the voices of women in Iran and the diaspora, reinforcing the importance of media as a tool in Communication for Development.  As a result of the data analysis conducted, the role of the diaspora in amplifying voices from the ground, especially following internet blocks in Iran, was identified as a key factor of the transnational nature of the social movement in Iran. Interviews with four members of the diaspora shed further light on the complex dynamic between the local and the diaspora during social movements.  The degree project identifies news media as being in a powerful position to inform, raise awareness, and amplify voices while presenting an image of a unified front between the local and diaspora in the context of current protests. However, the true complexity of the relationship between the local and the diaspora is not presented in news media. With unique challenges posed by context, distance, and time, members of the diaspora wrestle with their identity as Iranian but also different, falling somewhere between the local and the global, which impacts their relationship with their home country.

Time : A Study of the Discourses Centred Around the Librarians’ Work from a Historic Perspective

Jalhed, Frida January 2024 (has links)
The aim of the study is to delve deeper into how the press portrays the librarian profession through two different time periods and take a closer look at the discourses related to work tasks represented in the media to see how the profession has changed and why. The empirical material is from Biblioteksbladet, published in 1923 and 2023, and the study analyses the differences from a hundred-year progress in the representation of the profession in the press. These papers are analysed with discourse analysis to explain power relations, changes in social practices and society, and the context of the texts to explain why these changes have happened. The result of the study shows that there has been a change in the profession, as more tasks have been assigned to the librarians, which brings new expectations and changes in the work-related discourses in Biblioteksbladet and how they express themselves to the librarians. Furthermore, the profession changes with the society it is centred in to be of use to its users.

The structure of the master's thesis includes an introduction, three chapters, a conclusion, a glossary of terms, a list of references and six annexes. The first chapter provides a detailed analysis of the situation with the settlement and residence of students in universities in Russia and abroad. The issue is considered from the point of view of the three parties involved in this process: higher education institutions, students and business. Existing problems are indicated. The second chapter formulates new mechanisms for solving the housing problem of students in Russian universities, due to university and private student dormitories, and the allocation of a new market segment - “student” real estate. The third chapter provides investment calculations that clearly demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solutions for organizing the management of university student dormitories and the creation of private student dormitories and their applicability in practice. The appendices contain the corresponding calculations.

More of a drunken mess than a National Team with Coca-Cola in the bottles" : A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Swedish Evening Newspapers' representation of the Swedish Women's National Football Team during the 2023 World Cup

Gustafsson, Ida, Nilsson, Linn January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis, ten articles from the evening newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen are analyzed with the aim of examining how Swedish evening newspapers reproduce or challenge stereotypes in their reporting on the Swedish women's national football team during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, based on gender and framing theory. We employ a critical discourse analysis rooted in Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model. By analyzing textual, discursive, and social practices in the reporting, we uncover the underlying power structures that shape how the Swedish women's national team is portrayed and perceived in the media during the 2023 Women's World Cup. The analysis of articles from Aftonbladet and Expressen reveals clearly that the evening newspapers largely reproduce and reinforce stereotypes, preserving the gender power hierarchy. Even though the articles were written by women, tendencies toward stereotypical reporting were observed. The logic of the evening newspapers contributes to the persistence of these tendencies. The recurring stereotypes and the underlying gender bias in the media point to the necessity of cultural and social changes. A deeper transformation is required to break the entrenched structures and norms that continue to shape the representation of female athletes in the media.
