Understanding Academic Advising at Institutions with a First-Year Engineering Program

McGlothlin Lester, Marlena Brooke 05 June 2019 (has links)
Academic advising has been a part of United States (U.S.) colleges and universities since their inception, yet academic advising as we know it today is a relatively new profession. Over the last several decades, many colleges and universities have employed professional advisors, rather than teaching and learning faculty, to carry out the academic advising functions however little is known about the structures of these advising programs. Academic advisors often serve on the front lines (i.e., high student contact hours) and advocate for student success by supporting students in learning about their institutions, uncovering their personal and professional goals, and encouraging them to pursue life goals. However, the responsibility of academic advising and advisors varies at institutions of higher education across the country and this variation is not well understood. The purpose of this research was to better understand the structures of engineering academic advising at large four-year, primarily residential institutions with a first-year engineering program. To accomplish this purpose, the following overarching research question guided my study: How do first-year engineering programs structure academic advising, and what services, programs, and support are in place for academic advisors and students? To answer this question, I used a qualitative multi-case study design to understand the landscape of advising in first-year engineering programs and the organizational structures of their advising programs. I used Habley's Organizational Models for Academic Advising (1983) as a way to categorize the structures of academic advising and Frank's (1993) Integrated Model of Academic Advising Program Development as a conceptual framework for understanding how academic advising programs develop, the services provided, programming available, and how to enable the advisors to better support the student population. My findings include identifying: 1) several similarities between case sites' organizational structures of advising, 2) new student orientation and major exploration as main services offered at all sites, 3) a lack of formalized planning across all case sites, and 4) the prominence of advisor training with a desire to have more formal advisor recognition programs. Recommendations for future research, practice, and policy are provided along with a proposal for a new model for First-Year Engineering Advising Programs. / Doctor of Philosophy / Academic advising is a function within higher education that serves students by providing guidance to navigate the higher education system. My research uncovered 1) several similarities among the organization of the advising programs, 2) key academic services such the onboarding process for students known as new student orientation and methods to help student select an academic major, 3) a need to develop program planning initiatives and 4) the existence of training and lack of advising awards. Recommendations for future research, practice, and policy are provided along with a proposal for a new model for First-Year Engineering Advising Programs.

Indicators for sales success of a personal financial advisor in the bancassurance environment

Van der Merwe, Pieter Retief 28 February 2009 (has links)
This study investigated the relationships between personality, ability, biographical and sociographical factors on the one hand and criterion measures of job-relevant behaviour on the other. The aim of the study was to isolate success-predicting factors for a Personal Financial Advisor in a South African Bancassurance operation. The research was done by means of a criterion-related concurrent validation study. The sample consisted of 185 advisors with two years or longer sales tenure in the position. Predictor variables included measurement on a 20-dimension competency model, an ability assessment and 17 biographical and sociographical variables related to the position. Criterion variables included production figures and managerial ratings on advisor performance. Meaningful predictors for the success of financial advisors were found for personality, ability, biographical and sociographical variables, and the results confirmed the hypothesised competency model derived from a job analysis. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. 理財專員業績之影響因素分析—以T銀行為例 / Determinants of financial advisor' performance─evidence form T bank

Lee, Chi Tung Unknown Date (has links)
The financial services industry is one of the most important sectors for the economic growth and development of a country. It also functions as the lifeline supporting the development of business and industry of a nation. The business track for the past three decades of the financial services industry indeed reflects the overall big picture of Taiwan's economic development. Financial development to the growth of economy is just as the circulation of the blood to the body. Once the financial institutions fail the role of financial intermediaries, economic growth will undoubtedly have a grave impact resulting in a lot of social problems. Since 2003, Taiwanese financial holding companies and banks have been trying hard to develop wealth management business. T-Bank engaged in this business on July 1, 2007, which is the latest bank to start wealth management business in the industry. This study is to investigate the impact of demographic variables toward job performance, especially to the financial advisors in T-Bank, based on the operating characteristics of financial management market. The research results can provide valuable suggestions to T-Bank in terms of hiring, training and management of financial advisors, which can help to actively expand its wealth management business and make it a leading role in the industry. Using the mailed questionnaire method, 127 copies of questionnaire had been sent out to all the financial advisers of the T-Bank. All the data were analyzed by statistical software Limped 9.0. The empirical model was then utilized to verify all the hypotheses. The major findings of this study are as follows: There are significant differences between the work performance and the education level of the advisers, their serving area, the language they use when communicate with customers; their daily working hour and the number of VIP customers in individual account has significant positive influence to the work performance. The number of certificate each advisor possesses has significant negative influence to the work performance; conversing in Mandarin Chinese in central and southern Taiwan has significant negative influence to the work performance. T-bank will gain tremendous progress in wealth management business if it adopts the proposed suggestions in this study. It will also have strong competitive advantages among the industry. Its business will flourish and have the top rank in market shares.

Intellektuellt kapital – osynligt men väsentligt : En kvalitativ studie hur finansiella rådgivare inom bankväsendet värderar och bedömer intellektuellt kapital hos kunskapsföretag

Lindberg, Joel, Waldelius, Filip January 2019 (has links)
Expansion, development and knowledge have characterized the economy in recent decades and we are now living in a knowledge society. This has created an alteration in the typical features of the assets where invisible capital in the form of intellectual capital has become more important. An uncertainty has arisen in how the intellectual capital should be accounted for and how it is valued and assessed by stakeholders. The purpose of this study is to investigate how financial advisors value and assess intellectual capital within knowledge companies, also understand the possible irrational elements in their process because of the ambiguity of this capital. A qualitative method is used in this study where interviews with five financial advisors within the banking sector are carried out. The result demonstrates that there is a similar understanding about what intellectual capital is, but that valuation and assessment of this vary. The result also indicates that human capital is the essential asset for knowledge companies. Elements of irrational decisions also have a meaning in their valuation and assessment process. The conclusion is that intellectual capital is still something that stakeholders find difficult to grasp, and when valuing and assessing knowledge companies with significant intellectual capital, elements of irrational decisions are implied to be more obvious.

Avaliação da educação superior de enfermagem na perspectiva da Comissão Assessora de Avaliação para a Enfermagem - INEP / Evaluation of the Higher Education on the Nursing Studies perspective of the Adviser Committee of Evaluation for Nursing Studies - INEP.

Galleguillos, Tatiana Gabriela Brassea 04 May 2007 (has links)
This essay has the objective of analyze the process of evaluation of the higher education on the Brazilian nursing studies under the perspective of the Adviser Committee of Evaluation for Nursing Studies - INEP. From the analysis fulfilled based on the interviews with the members of the so called committee for the nursing field it was possible to open debates on issues concerning to the policies of the higher education evaluation, taking into consideration the expansion and the diversification at this level of education, the settlement of the procedures for evaluation, established on principles of flexibility and competitiveness, as the health policies, determined from the conductresses of the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) with emphasis on the public health. It becomes clear that the Sistema Nacional de Avaliação da Educação Superior (SINAES), besides presenting elements of regulation, makes possible accomplish a qualitative evaluation, in order to overcome the former model, determined by Exame Nacional de Cursos (ENC), characterized by the trend of setting a ranking for the sector. The use of a single instrument for evaluation of the courses, although makes clear the lack of speciousness for the nursing graduation, assures the qualitative evaluation. The rater is highlighted as a central element of the evaluation process of courses, due to the possibility of dialog within the institutions, translated into a modality of formative evaluation. Moreover the committee does not establish relationship between the evaluation and employment, the offer and enlargement of courses and openings; it determines the need of new working positions. The expansion of bachelors degrees show a greater growth in the private sector, being the offer of openings in the public sector fairly stagnated, characterizing the transfer of the social responsibility from the government to the private enterprise. It is brought forward the Curriculum conductresses and the - SUS - conductresses as the guiding axles for the evaluation of the higher education on nursing studies, definer of a new paradigm of graduation in health. Even that the primary intention of the evaluation is not to focalize the specificities of the public health, this becomes undeniable, due - SUS - is based on this values. It is also proper to consider, that the system has elements of regulation character, which are not used to detain the creation of mercantilist courses and care for the graduation quality. Due to the formative character of the evaluation, the challenge is settled in the fact that it leads to real contributions on the elaboration and development of politic-pedagogical projects to form the - SUS - workers-to-be.

It adopts as a theoretical-methodological referential the Cultural-Historical Psychology, especially the concepts of Vigotski and some of his readers. Audio recordings of two interviews, and three meetings of interventions carried out with the management team at school were used as data collection procedures. The results show that the configuration of the work as a mission by the advisor avoids the establishment of partnerships with various actors school, and leads to the prioritization of emergency" problems solving instead of planned actions that could promote changes in school reality, especially continuing education of teachers. It is concluded that trying to take upon itself the responsibility for the resolution of all claims and facing the impossibility in responding them, the pedagogical advisor sets up his role as lonely and impossible to be done, feeling cheated and abandoned by the other school stakeholders. This way of acting results in constant pain and sickness of this professional, which reaffirms the importance of the work of the psychologist at school, as a promoter of actions that enable the establishment of healthier relationships that result in the development and welfare of subjects, especially the students, ultimate goal of school education.

Redovisningens roll i kreditgivningsprocessen / The role of accounting in the credit assessment process

Liu, Ronny, Tannerfors, Hanna January 2014 (has links)

: du surveillant général au conseiller principal d’éducation, l’évolution d’une fonction éducative (1847-1970) / The shadow of Mister Viot : from supervisor general (surveillant general, or "surgé") to chief advisor for education (conseiller principal d'éducation), an evolving educational function serving students, over the 20th century

Focquenoy, Christine 05 December 2015 (has links)
The subject of the research is the supervisor general, who played the role of disciplinarian in French secondary schools in the 19th and 20th centuries. This eminent figure in school life stamped on the collective mind the image of the heartless, loathsome “surgé”, much feared by students. As the symbol of a despised school disciplinary regime, the “surge” crystallizes the broader criticism of Vallès’ “academic sweatshop”. The study identifies the invariant features of the supervisor general as portrayed in literature, film and iconography, and as epitomized by Daudet’s Monsieur Viot. The myth of the “surgé” was to outlive the disappearance of the function and its replacement in 1970 by the position of chief advisor for education (CPE). Oddly enough, for the National Education archives, the supervisor general remains an unknown soldier of the “Middle Kingdom.”The second part of the paper focuses on the historical profile of the supervisors general of the Académie (educational authority) of Lille from 1847 to 1970. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of 137 career files, stored in the national archives and those of northern France, sheds light on institutional expectations, and offers insights into the job, day to day, and the relationship with students. This prosopographical section is supported by interviews with former supervisors general and by analysis of extracts from the profession’s press. Finally, other sources (perceptions of the CPE, questionnaires completed by CPEs, course reports, competitive exam reports, testimonies etc.) are examined in order to establish whether the new title (CPE) has given rise to a new professionalism, and to determine to what degree the myth of the “surgé” has weakened this educator’s sense of his own professional identity, thereby detracting from an efficient division of educational work in junior high schools and high schools.

Modeling and simulation of hybrid electric vehicles

Zhou, Yuliang Leon 14 January 2008 (has links)
With increasing oil price and mounting environment concerns, cleaner and sustainable energy solutions have been demanded. At present transportation constitutes a large portion of the energy consumed and pollution created. In this work, two hybrid vehicle powertrain technologies were studied, a fuel cell - battery hybrid and two internal combustion engine - battery/ultracapacitor hybrids. Powertrain performance models were built to simulate the performance of these new designs, and to assess the feasibility of a fuel cell hybrid power backup system for a special type of vehicles, elevators in high-rise buildings, using the ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR (ADVISOR) first. The model was then applied to evaluate the two-mode hybrid powertrain for more common vehicles - commercial trucks, showing potential fuel consumption reduction. To improve modeling accuracy, a new and more flexible tool for modeling multi-physics systems, Modelica/Dymola, was used to carry out the modeling and analysis of next generation hybrid electric vehicles, exploring the potentials of new hybrid powertrain architectures and energy storage system designs. The study forms the foundation for further research and developments.
