Effects of a Dialogical Argumentation Instructional Model on Grade 10 Learners' Conception of Fermentation

Diwu, Christopher January 2010 (has links)
<p>The study catered for empirical and metaphysical dimensions of science and IKS. The study employed a quasi-experimental design as well as a qualitative research design. Two cohorts of students from a fictitiously named &ldquo / Culture Secondary School&rdquo / have been used in this study. The list of instruments for data collection were as follows: Conceptions of Fermentation (COF) questionnaire which was used to elicit learners&rsquo / pre- and post-test conceptions of fermentation with special reference to traditional beer or &ldquo / Umqombothi&rdquo / , an Attitudes to Science (ATS) questionnaire which was used to find out the learners&rsquo / worldviews, a Science Achievement Test (SAT) which was used to assess the learners&rsquo / generalised knowledge of fermentation, a classroom observation schedule as well as a focus group interview schedule to gather additional qualitative data. All the instruments were in English with all technical and difficult terms in both English and isiXhosa (the learners&rsquo / home language). Both groups were exposed to Science/IKS-based lessons. The only difference between the two groups was that, the experimental group (E group) was exposed to a Dialogical Argumentation Teaching Model (DAIM) and the comparison group (C group) to a traditional teaching approach. The data gatherred were both analyzed in terms of qualitative and quantitative descriptions.</p>

Effects of an argumentation-based instruction on grade 10 learners’ understanding of the causes of pollution at a river site

Magerman, Ruben Clive January 2011 (has links)
This study was based on the Science and Indigenous Knowledge Systems Project (SIKSP) at the School of Science and Mathematics Education, University of the Western Cape. The project seeks to enhance educators’ understanding of and ability to implement a Science-IKS curriculum (Ogunniyi, 2007) through using the theoretical framework of argumentation (Toulmin Argument Pattern) to the extent that learners would value the significance of both worldviews. This study sought to find the effects of an Argumentation-Based Instruction on grade 10 learners’ understanding of the causes of pollution at a river site. Since the integration of Science and IKS are envisaged by Curriculum 2005 (C2005), two theoretical argumentation constructs have been used namely, Toulmin’s (1958) Argumentation Pattern (TAP) and Ogunniyi’s (1995) Contiguity Argumentation Theory (CAT).

Nachhaltigkeit in der Argumentation stark machen

Arnold, Marlen Gabriele, Kirchner, Moritz 15 September 2021 (has links)
The topic of sustainability is clearly gaining social and political relevance. Evidence from the natural sciences and humanities demonstrates the need for action, change and immediate transformation. Nevertheless, sustainability is continuously accompanied by reservations, resistance and objections of various kinds and degrees. Battle rhetoric is repeatedly used to undermine evidenced research results and provable facts. Based on the various topics of sustainability, the paper shows how to argue for a transformation towards sustainability and how to confidently deal with objections. In doing so, the fine art of communication follows the principle of argumentation - reply - reply to the reply. The aim is to respond and counter to selectively chosen, but common objections as confidently as possible, and thus, to make sustainability strong in reasoning. This compilation offers a compact rhetorical guide in the context of the development towards sustainability.

Narrative Sinnstiftung in Organisationen: Ein Konzept zur Erforschung von Organisationen am Beispiel der stationären Altenpflege

Rätzer, Matthias 13 July 2015 (has links)

Kommunikativa strategier i texter om tobaksavvänjning : Innehåll, argumentation och modelläsare / Communicative strategies in texts about tobacco cessation : Contents, argumentation and model readers

Skoglund, Astrid January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to examine the content and communicative strategies in texts used in a project on tobacco policy delegated by the Swedish government to the National Institute of Public Health (“The National Tobacco Assignment 2008–2010”). The study uses communicative strategies as an umbrella term for the way the texts fulfil the political assignment through adaptation to suit different receivers in a discursive practice with set guidelines for communication between experts and users, and how these strategies are visible in the studied texts. The material consists of six guides for care personnel and ten brochures for smokers. The study is a text-focused critical discourse analysis combining methodological tools from different linguistic traditions. These are chiefly taken from critical text linguistics, new rhetoric, and sociosemiotics. The main question posed in the study is how the public authority’s assignment to influence people through the texts is combined with ideas about smokers’ empowerment. The investigation problematizes how the content and form of the texts relates to the authority’s assignment to exert influence, and to motivational interviewing as a discursive practice with an empowerment perspective on lifestyle changes. The analyses show that controlling ideas and notions about smokers’ empowerment exist in parallel in the government texts about smoking cessation. Controlling elements are most prominent in the sections of the guides about groups who, in the encounter with care personnel, do not show any interest or desire to quit smoking. In the studied brochures the controlling elements are most prominent in those aimed at operation patients, adolescents, and parents-to-be. Both groups of material – the guides and the brochures – nevertheless give the impression of being designed to be compatible with a patient-centred discursive practice. This is noticeable, for example, in the occurrence of associative and dissociative argumentation strategies which legitimize or tone down controlling elements.

This thesis proposes a theorical discourse on the fictional mediation, more particularly in the novels of our corpus. From a rhetorical perspective, the research consists in studying the process of implementation of the signification in the literary works. The communication appears to it not as a stable and simple datum which we could reduce to formal appearances or still to sociohistorical contents, but as a set of coherent requirements wich specify the terms, otherwise the modalities of the argumentative cooperation between the writer and the reader. The thiking is composed of three parts. The first part consists in indentifiying the question of wich the fiction statement is the answer. It allows to raise, in thematic form, the main axes of the narrative line of argument, consequently the issues of the communication in each novel. The second part deals with the analysis of the formal choices of the statement and it shows on which modes and what ideological end the contribution of the reader is requested. In fact, it’s the discursive strategy wich defines the method of communication and characterizes the functioning of mediation in a literary work. The central idea of the third part is to show the epistemological skill that a writer gives to the literary work and the reader’s ability to identify it. The theories wich become epistemological pools appear as reductionisms and as real obstacles to the pleasure to read or to make pertinently resound the significance of a work art.

Le rôle de l’argumentation dans le développement du militantisme environnementaliste : Le cas des conflits autour de l’aménagement hydro-électrique de l’étang de Berre (2004-2007) / The Role of Argumentation in Tyhe Development Environmentalist Activism : The case of the conflicts related to the Etang de Berre’s hydro-electric planning (2004-2007)

Allouche, Aurélien 27 November 2013 (has links)
This work questions how far and by what processes the constraint made to the social actors who are opposing an industrial or urban development project to argue their refusal can incidentally contribute to the dissemination of the values, beliefs and principals of the environmentalist activism. Following a simmelian analysis perspective, this work makes converge the interactionist and cognitive dimensions of the planning conflicts. By this way we aim to understand how the properties of arguments and group commitments may gradually lead actors initially engaged to oppose a development project due to personal reasons to assume and promote environmentalist contents defended for themselves and beyond the initial development conflict. We propose an analytical model of the role of argumentation in the development of environmentalist activism when individuals decide to constitute a group in order to oppose a development project by means of a common argumentation. This model is made from the simmelian aspects of the works of Bernard Groethuysen and Mikhail Bakhtin. The field study of this work is consituted by the conflicts arising from the construction of a hydroelectric power station at Saint-Chamas (Bouches-du-Rhône) which converted the Berre lagoon into the point fall of one of the leading french hydroelectric chains. During these conflicts, the progression of argumentation and the interactions involved in the argument process allow the expansion of the mobilization to various environmental issues and the defense of new ecosystems.

Essai sur le néoconstitutionnalisme / Essay on neoconstitutionalism

Mercier, Jérémy 06 November 2015 (has links)
The term «neoconstitutionalism» was coined by legal theorists to refer to a new set of both, theories of interpretation and of protection of fundamental rights. Neoconstitutionalism is a theory dealing primarily with specificities of constitutional interpretation, balancing between conflicting legal principles, and the inclusion of moral values in positive law in constitutional democracies. It posits new ways of understanding law. According to neoconstitutionalism, judges of Constitutional and Supreme Courts should place great importance on moral reasoning due to the emergence of new contents in law. This would enable the creation of a new democratic system consistent with the principles of new constitutional States. This study seeks to expose the practical implications and ideological presuppositions of case-law and doctrinal discourses related to fundamental rights. It examines recent constitutional transitions (in South Africa, Afghanistan, Cambodia, East Timor, Eastern Europe, Latin America, etc.) as well as the broader phenomenon of increasing protection of human dignity (Germany, United States, Canada, India, Israel, European Court, Inter-American Court, etc.) and social rights (Colombia, etc.). In doing so, it highlights the new interpretative techniques and the new challenges faced by legal theory.

L'évaluation de la compétence discursive plurilingue : le cas des étudiants en FLE au Village Français du Nigéria (VFN) / The assessment of multilingual discourse competence : a case study of French major students in the Nigerian French Language Village (NFLV)

Odu, Omola Mercy 13 June 2018 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study the role of the multilingual competence of third year undergraduate students of French as a foreign language in Nigeria. We also studied the teachers’ perceptions of the students’ essays as well as their assessment practices. To achieve this, we presented the sociolinguistic context of the students, the language policy of Nigeria as well as the place of national and foreign languages in the country. We studied the students’ scripts using textual linguistic and multilingual writing methodologies. The field work took place at the Nigerian French Language Village at Badagry. It was organised in three stages using questionnaires and exploratory interviews with the students and the teachers, and non-participatory observation in the classroom. The main results showed that the students have their perceptions of argumentative writing and multilingual competence. The teachers do not take into account the multilingual competences of the students but focus instead on linguistic content and errors in the scripts. We also observed that the teaching of argumentative writing remains at the theoretical level and unrelated to the students’ experiences and context. Following these observations, we deemed it necessary to propose an assessment grid and a didactic sequence on teaching argumentative essays and its textual features using different text genres. These examples could be useful for both students and teachers.
