Several studies have been conducted to gather basic information to help with control this pest. The objectives of this study were: (i) to develop and validate a diagrammatic scale of by A. guerreronis, (ii) to study the distribution of A. guerreronis and Neoseiulus baraki Athias-Henriot through bunches of different ages, (iii) to study the dispersal strategies A. guerreronis, and (iv) to verify what are the food sources for Proctolaelaps bulbosus Moraes, Reis & Gondim Jr. on coconut plants. The results showed that it is possible to estimate the population of A. guerreronis in fruits with the developed through diagrammatic scale of damage, from which a relationship between infestation level and damage showed high accuracy. Fruits with 16% of damage presented the greatest population of A. guerreronis, which was verified in fruits of the 4th bunch. From this bunch, a significant reduction in the population of A. guerreronis occurs due to the growth of N. baraki population, the reduced proportion of non-necrotic tissue in the perianth, and the increased-lignin content of these tissues. A. guerreronis walks to disperse at short distances, particularly during the night. It can walk either among fruits from the same bunch or fruits of different ages on the same plant. For longer distances, the pest uses wind as a means of dispersal, and the phoresy is a casual and irrelevant process. P. bulbosus feeds on A. guerreronis in coconut crops, which is suitable for development and reproduction, suggesting that this predator may play an important role in reducing the population of the pest in the field.

It is considered a major coconut pest in the world. Several studies have being carried out to obtain information to control this pest. This study aimed to: (I) investigate the damage intensity of A. guerreronis on coconut fruits in the field under different conditions: (i) plants with removed bunches; (ii) bunches with the distal portion of the spikelets removed; (iii) bunches monthly sprayed with Abamectina (9g/ha); (iv) and control plants; and (II) studing the foraging behavior of the predatory mites Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) and Proctolaelaps bickley Bram, evaluating the ability of the predators to identify and differentiate odors from parts of coconut plants infested or not by the eriophyid using Y-tube olfactometer and “T” arenas. The removal of spikelet had no effect the damage level of new bunches emitted bythe plant, but delayed the damage intensity of A. guerreronis in about 1 month. After the removal of all bunches, the intensity of damage was restored in two months to the new bunches emitted. Chemical control with Abamectin, on monthly based application, kept the A. guerreronis intensity of damage at low levels. In olfactometer tests both predators were able to distinguish between the infested plant parts and the air stream. The predators preferred infested parts over their respectivenon-infested ones, and among the infested plant parts, the spikelets promoted greater attraction to predators. In arena tests both predators preferred epidermis’s disc of coconut fruits infested with A. guerreronis over other sources. The results showed that both predators are able locating A. guerreronis by olfactory stimuli.

However, chemical control success depends on frequent and correct applications of acaricides. Thus, particular attention has been devoted to find a predator that can be effective in A. guerreronis biological control. Among the predators associated with A. guerreronis, N. baraki stands out as the most promising. This study aimed to evaluated the sublethal effects of acaricides used against A. guerreronis on N. baraki. The following parameters were evaluated: overall predator activity, mating behaviour, functional response, life table of females exposed to acaricides and their offspring, and forraging behaviour. Sublethal effects of acaricides were observed in all parameters evaluated. The overall activity and the mating behaviour of the predator were affected by azadirachtin. The type of functional response and prey handling time (Th) were not altered, but the attack rate (a') was reduced by fenpyroximate and abamectin, this last also reduced the consumption peak. Exposed females to abamectin (F0) did not produce offspring, fenpyroximate did not affect the life table parameters of exposed females (F0), but affected the offspring (F1). Alterations on instantaneous rate of increase (ri) on the 2nd generation (F2) were not observed. The foraging of predators exposed to acaricides was impaired, since they were not able to distinguish between infested and uninfested fruits. All acaricides tested affected at least one parameter of the predator, indicating that the frequent use of one of these acaricides might impar the effciency of the biological control of A. guerreronis by N. baraki.

Although being an important pest, lack information about the population dynamics of A. guerreronis and natural enemies associated with this pest in Brazil. Thus, this work investigated the population dynamics of A. guerreronis and their predatory mites on coconuts in the coastal counties of Maragogi (States of Alagoas), Itamaracá (State of Pernambuco), and Pitimbu (State of Paraíba). In addition, present the description of a new species, Proctolaelaps (Ascidae) found associated with the pest. The survey was conducted once a month from January to December 2005 collecting 30 coconuts from three different plants on each of these locales. In the laboratory, the coconut’s bracts were taken off and observed under stereomicrocopic, and all mites found were collected, mounted in slides and identified. Based on the data obtained were determined the dynamics of identified species and ecological indices for the species making up the communities. A. guerreronis exhibited greater abundance during December, June and May in Maragogi, Itamaracá and Pitimbu counties, respectively. Among the families of predatory mites, the phytoseiids were the most abundant accounting for 97%, 95% and 82% of individuals collected in Itamaracá, Maragogi and Pitimbu, respectively. And, among phytoseiids, Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) was the most abundant, dominant, frequent and regularly collected in all surveyed fields. The new species of Proctolaelaps was characterized based on the absence of the seta z3 and R3, a dilated seta Z5 in the apex, and a spermatodactyl longer than usual in other species.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Suerda Willna Jacome de Santana.pdf: 1856490 bytes, checksum: 1b1aa48c4a83323254b5694aeace4c8a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-02-04 / Larvae of coconut moth, Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lep.: Phycitidae), damage flowers and fruits of coconut, Cocos nucifera L., resulting in direct yield reduction. Thus, this work had three major objectives: to develop a feasible rearing methodology for all stages of this pest; to study the biology of A. subrufella reared at 18, 22, 25, 28, 30 and 32ºC and; to investigate the success of A. subrufella larvae colonizing coconut fruits related with the necrosis caused by the coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eryophyidae). The rearing technique consisted of using green coconut fruits 10-12 cm of diameter and infested artificially with two to five larvae per fruit. Based on fertility life table parameters estimated for three successive generations, the best results were obtained with two and three A. subrufella larvae reared per fruit. The storage of egg and pupal stages at 12oC can be made upto five days without negative effect on egg viability and adult reproductive output, but storage periods over 10 days affected egg viability and adults’ performance. Developmental period of A. subrufella was reduced as temperature increases and marked effects were found at extreme temperatures of 18 and 32oC. The egg-adult period ranged from 19.3 to 59.8 days from 32ºC to 18ºC, respectively. Developmental viability from egg to adult was 25% at 18 and 32oC, and over 72% at the intermediate temperatures. The lower temperature threshold and thermal requirement for egg-adult period were 12.54oC and 362.75 degree-days, respectively. Basedon thermal requirement, A. subrufella can have 13 generations per year in the Zona da Mata and Sertão areas of Pernambuco State, Brazil. Data from field survey showed that only coconut fruits exhibiting necrosis caused by the coconut mite were infested with A. subrufella larvae. Moths of A. subrufella, however, exhibited similar oviposition preference on damage and undamaged coconut fruits. Neonate larvae and third instar larvae were not able to colonize undamaged coconut fruits. These results support the hypothesis that the necrosis in the coconut fruit caused by early infestation of the coconut mite is a key factor to A. subrufella larvae to colonize the mesocarp of the fruit protected by the fruit perianth. Therefore, the status of coconut fruit key pest of A. subrufella depends on fruit necrosis caused by the coconut mite.

Caracterização química e efeito do óleo essencial de Lippia gracilis e seus constituintes majoritários sobre Aceria guerreronis (Acari: Eriophyidae) / Chemical characterization and effect of the essential oil of Lippia gracilis and its major constituents on Aceria guerreronis (Acari: Eriophyidae)

Menezes, Mariana Santos 22 July 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Lippia gracilis Schauer is a plant that belongs to the Verbenaceae family, is known as “alecrim-da-chapada” or “alecrim-de-tabuleiro”, and occure in the caatinga biome. Because of its bioactive potential, the essential oil of L. gracilis is been tested for control of different agriculture and livestock pests and diseases. One of these pests is the coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis (Acari: Eriophyidae), an important pest of the coconut crop in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxicity and repellency of the essential oil of two genotypes of L. gracilis and their major compounds thymol and carvacrol against the coconut mite (A. guerreronis). Adults of the coconut mite were subjected to increasing concentrations of the essential oils of the genotypes LGRA-106 and LGRA-109, of thymol and carvacrol, allowing the estimation of the lethal concentrations (LC). In addition to toxicity, the repellency of essential oils of L. gracilis, thymol and carvacrol was evaluated by releasing mites in the center of an arena with half area sprayed and the other half unsprayed. The analysis of the chemical composition of the essential oils of L. gracilis identified thymol (52.41%) and carvacrol (49.36%) as the major compounds for genotypes LGRA-106 and LGRA-109, respectively. The genotype LGRA-106 showed higher toxicity (LC50 = 4.73 μL/mL) to the coconut mite compared to the genotype LGRA-109 (LC50 = 30.99 μL/mL). The toxicity of LGRA-106 did not differ from its major compound thymol (LC50 = 5.34 μL/mL). The essential oil of LGRA-106 was 2.3 times more toxic than its major compound thymol at LC90. The LC50 and LC99 of genotypes LGRA-106 (4.73 and 13.18 μL/mL), LGRA-109 (30.99 and 54.33 μL/mL) and carvacrol (6.84 and 45.97 μL/mL) repelled the coconut mite after 24 h of exposure. The LC50 and LC99 of thymol (5.34 and 56.35 μL/mL) presented a neutral effect on the coconut mite after 24 h of exposure. We can conclude that the essential oil of genotype LGRA-106 has potential for development of a product to control the coconut mite.

Barreto, Ighor Costa 03 March 2017 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Aceria guerreronis keifer is one of the main coconut pests in Brazil, its attack causes a premature fall, reduction of fruit size, water weight and volume, as well as stetic esthetic damages (necrosis) depreciating the product. Currently, there are five pesticides registered for the control of the coconut-necrotic mite. However, there is no specificity to A. guerreronis. The Lamiaceae family stands out with some specimens with notable insecticidal activity, among them the Vitex genus, known to have ecdysteroids and iridoids as markers of the genus. However, there is a shortage of specific chemotaxonomic studies for volatile compounds. The objective of this work was to identify the volatile compounds present in the essential oils of the species of Vitex gardneriana Schauer, Vitex capitata Vahl., Vitex rufescens A. Juss., Vitex megapotamica (Spreng.) Moldenk and to evaluate possible effects of toxicity and repellence against A. guerreronis. In addition to analyzing the genetic diversity of species of the genus Vitex using ISSR markers, verifying the occurrence of statistical correlations between the genetic diversity and the chemical profiles of the essential oils. Chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (GC-MS / FID) were used for the detection of volatile compounds, and the molecular markers of ISSR for the genetic characterization of the species, as well as toxicity and repellency tests against necrotic necrosis. The results showed 46, 45, 41 and 37 constituents for V. capitata, V. megapotamica, V. gardneriana and V. rufences respectively, among which, -copaene, (E)-caryophyllene, -elemene, -humulene, trans-cadine-1(6)4-diene, viridiflorene and -cadinene were the main components of V. capitata and V. megapotamica. 6,9-guaiadiene, caryophyllene oxide, L-calamenene for V. gardneriana and (E)-cariophylene, ledol, germacrene D, -humulene, allo-aromadendrene, viridiflorene and -elemene for V. rufences. The results of molecular markers of ISSR generated a total of 90 fragments, of which 100% were polymorphic. The genotypes of the four Vitex species selected for this study were pooled using the Jaccard coefficient (JC). The mean similarity was 0.21 JC (0.08-0.45 JC). A clear separation of two groups was observed, with V. gardneriana being the most isolated of the four species, and V. capitata and V. megapotamica more closely related to each other. The acaricide activity of the four oils was also evaluated by means of toxicity and repellency tests against A. guerreronis. The essential oil of V. gardneriana showed acaricidal activity against A. guerreronis with a LC50 of 0.85 mg.mL-1, whereas the oils of V. capitata, V. megapotamica and V. rufecens were not toxic to this pest up to 2.3 mg. Ml-1 when tested through the toxicity bioassay. In general, essential oils distilled from the Vitex species repelled A. guerreronis after 24 hours at a concentration of 1.8 mg.mL-1 using abamectin as a control in the two-choice disc repellency assay, however, the essential oil of V. gardneriana presented a statistically significant acaricidal activity against the coconut mite necrosis. Introducing himself as a potential candidate for the development of an acaricide product.
