Embodiment and its Effects. How Creativity, Perception and Sensory Processing Sensitivity Link with Empathy and Theory of Mind Mechanisms

Kiou, Jade L. January 2018 (has links)
Embodied cognition is the study of how actions and interactions with objects and individuals affect cognitive processing. Neuroaesthetics deals with the neural, biological and evolutionary aspects of aesthetic experience which occur through the senses and consist of the emotional value placed onto objects, for example the appreciation of art work, dance, or music. These are individual and differ depending on level of expertise and experience within the art. The main aim of the thesis was to investigate the link between embodiment and aesthetics through examining people’s level of creativity, colour perception and sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) in relation to levels of empathy and theory of mind (ToM). Research into this is sparse as the role of the body in relation to aesthetic experiences is a relatively new concept. Preference for portraits versus landscapes was also investigated to look at any role of social stimuli in aesthetic preference. Results demonstrate that participants with (i) higher levels of creativity (for some types of creativity) and (ii) more acute colour perception had higher levels of empathy/ToM. Individuals who had higher SPS demonstrated higher empathy/ToM. It was also found that colour perception and empathy levels decrease with age, and aesthetic preference for portraits increase with age. These results have implications for education/schools, the prison service, for specific clinical conditions such as autism, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, particularly given the role of dopamine in these disorders and in colour perception. Future research should investigate these findings using brain imaging and physiological measures.

Images of light and emotions - a photographic research about individual and collective emotional sensibility towards lighting atmospheres

Albé, Marta January 2020 (has links)
How do we humans feel the light? Is there a correspondance between our inner feelings and emotions and the outer space that surrounds us? Are we aware/conscious of it? Which personal meanings-values and emotions arise in us and how we consequently link them to a certain light-environment Atmosphere (indoor and outdoor) lit by natural or artificial light? Driven by these questions, this thesis will investigate via a visual qualitative experiment driven among photography amateurs, how their emotional sensibility is deeply bonded with light and how this emotional atmosphere is felt and portrayed throughout the day. A collection of two pictures per day, for one week, in the morning and in the evening will be firstly analyzed under the lens of each singular participant’s emotional sensibility, and then collectively grouped into common lighting Atmospheres. The wide and colorful spectrum of the possible combinations between light and emotions investigated in this research shows the richness and the complexity of the human sensibility towards light, and raise awareness in consider these intangible human factors as essential in the lighting process.

Finding the Aesthetic in Visitor Experience : A study of strategies used by Moderna Museet and Bonniers Konsthall to understand the visitor experience within exhibitions

Shariq, Ifra January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of aesthetic experience of the audience within art exhibitions and its influence on their exhibition making and curatorial decisions of art institutions. This is done by comparing the practices within two case institutions located in Stockholm -Moderna Museet, a public art museum and Bonniers Konsthall, a private art institution. The research questions for this study are: What strategies do Moderna Museet and Bonnier Konsthall use to understand the aesthetic experience of their audience? Do the current visitor surveys used in these institutions capture the aesthetic aspect of the visitor experience? How does this knowledge about the aesthetic experience of the visitor influence the curatorial decisions within the two museums? The material consists of visitor survey questionnaires used in both the institutions as well as interviews that were conducted with staff members of the two institutions. The material is examined using the aesthetic experience theory, in order to focus specifically on the aesthetic aspect of the total visitor experience.  The thesis groups the different strategies used within the two institutions in two categories of formal and informal strategies, based on the formality of their conduction. It further compares the practices of the two institutions in order to examine the difference in the perspective of public and private art museums towards their visitors. By eventually tracing how knowledge collected by the formal and informal strategies reinforces each other, the thesis draws a more complete picture of the role the aesthetic experience of the visitor plays within art institutions and their art exhibitions.

Pojem estetické zkušenosti v americké filozofii po Johnu Deweym / The Notion of Aesthetic Experience in American Philosophy after John Dewey

Špryňarová, Denisa January 2014 (has links)
John Dewey's philosophical work was establishing a continuum between human behavior and nature. Dewey advanced the theory that everything we experience comes through interaction with our surroundings - and articulating our experience by this interaction. Dewey uses experience even in the framework of art - and he stresses the importance of combining art and esthetic experience into our everyday life. The first part of my paper is meant to explain Dewey's philosophical concepts, his view on the issues relating to the common world, his analysis of normal/everyday experience, and his analysis of what he termed esthetic experience. Part two is a comparison between Dewey's philosophy of esthetic experience and Jerome Stolnitz's, another known aesthetic philosopher, and their theories on esthetics. The basic question I seek to answer is whether, despite their differences in theories, Stolnitz was coming from a different theoretical background with different traditions and assumptions, one can still trace certain consensus and mutually shared territory in which their theories merge. And so, I attempt to answer the question, can we find characteristics of esthetic experience that would be plausible to both of them? Or is it rather that their understanding of esthetic experience was so different, that we...

A experiência estética tecida pelo canto no processo social: sensibilidade, tempo e pertencimento / Not informed by the author

Coelho, Cecilia Maria Valentim Teixeira 22 March 2017 (has links)
This research aims to investigate the aesthetical experience woven by singing as a means to enlarge the sensibility, self-perception, and expression, both individually and collectively, as well as to increase the sense of belonging to a community. Following the Phenomenological research method, its field of study was the workshop Viver o Canto (Live the Singing) , promoted by Sesc-Pompéia (São Paulo) and conducted by the researcher. From the experience provided by the workshop, from the comprehension of the participants´ reports gathered in each session in field diaries made especially for this work, from the notes of the researcher/facilitator, and from the interviews with the participants emerged the main topics of this study: Sensibility, Time and Belonging, as well as their unfolding within the aesthetic field provided by singing. We have concluded that these 3 topics cover the range of sensations, feelings, and reflection originated from such experience; being the theoretical frame formulated from them. The results show how the aesthetical experience and the engagement woven by singing can be understood as a way to personal and social transformation, and to the emergency and straightening of the sense of belonging to a community

The main question concern to the analogy between the novel's verb-space structure and the art-installation. The focus is on specifics aspects of the novel, such as the distinctive creative process that, in turn, coadunate to performance and plasticity that are related to installation art. Ruffato's novel, which, as a heterogeneous work, does not follow the regular poetics' prerogatives. Instead, it is a new creative literary composition in which the author, the work, and the reader are imbricated, emerging out of this intransitive experience that requires from the reader a dispersive unfolding of the novel's structure. To understand a composition whose parts are disconnected, you must see this composition as an limite-experience, as limit in which interiority, subjectivization, desire and eroticism are involved as just the concept of "outside", which means an unstopped way to resignification their intensive and multiples means. Therefore, the theme is divided into three chapters through which we approach the novel's creation from its familiarity with the hypertext and the necessary "outside" experience. In other terms, the topic is addressed by the Ruffato's novel relationship with an art installation, especially by the concept of spatial performance that can or can not present the possibility of verisimilitude. Ultimately, we state on the novel spatial narrativity as intranscriptible realism unless by meaning is imposed by the aesthetic art experience provided by Eles eram muitos cavalos. From authors such as Heidegger, Bataille, and Blanchot, this paper tried to elucidate the dispositif poetics that are articulated and are articulators of a work that evoke the human totality only intelligible in the paradigm of contemporaneity / Esta dissertação tem o objetivo geral de elucidar a construção não linear do romance Eles eram muitos cavalos, de Luiz Ruffato.

Sung City: aesthetics experience and education.

Andrade, Julia Pinheiro 08 November 2007 (has links)
This work develops a reflection about some recent figures of the cultural brazilian modernity to remark the formative sense that the aesthetic experience can assume on education. Specifically, it discusses the form of Brazilian song on two of its singulars expressions: the Tom Zé\'s tropicalism and the Racionais MC\'s aggressive rap. Through different means, both artists narrate an aesthetics experience of São Paulo city by exploring the song as narrative form. The research pictures critical moments of modern city development and, at the same time, reflects about different aesthetics experience as a formative experience. For this, the theoretical references are an intersection of three reflection\'s fields: sociology of culture, philosophy of education and esthetics critics. Considering, among others, reflections from Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Jean Baudrillard and Edgar Morin, the work discusses the relationship between song and consumption culture. Among others references, from the semiotics of song of Luiz Tatit and the Roland Barthes\'s concept of listening, it proceeds an analytical interpretation of Tom Zé\'s and Racionais MC\'s aesthetics projects and compositions. Considering, among others, Henri Lefebvre\'s and Zigmunt Bauman\'s analysis about contemporary society and De Certeau proposition\'s about the impact of mass culture on education, it discusses the sense of schooling in face of critical importance that artistic languages from media assumes, from the middle of XX century upwards, on the sociability and on cultural manifestations of the young. At last, from the Foucault\'s discussion about the concept of enlightenment, the work affirms the centrality of aesthetics experience as a possibility to create conditions to educate critical, emancipated and autonomous subject. The research results conclude into a problematization of the meaning of education, schooling culture and the idea of \"formation\" (cultural background) from the remarkable cultural signification of song in Brazil.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the problems that comes from images that are not only willing to be seen, but also and especially to be handled. The materiality of relations provides opportunities for several experiences in contemporary audiovisuals, this justifies the importance of studies indicated to understand this phenomenon. In this research we purpose to analyze what arise from possibilities of usage, enunciating how the web documentary Le Défi des Bâtisseurs is structured and what follows from the assortments done by the user, in a systemic outflow, built to be followed by the user in order that he or she can connect with the project in diverse environments and in different ways. In this point of view, the cinematographic legacy presents itself with preponderance, leading the appointed dynamics. It is used as method the cartographic mapping (KILPP, 2010a) and as methodological tools it is used the character of the flâneur and the collector (BENJAMIN, 2006). Through the cartographic mapping it is possible to build, from the analysis, a dialectic figure of the audiovisual Le Défi des Bâtisseurs. A dialectic figure of different eras determined from a specific moment, unlike a image from a picture that can be showed, but as a pronunciation of an image full with visible and invisible assertions, of a series of usages that repeat and differentiate themselves through mounting sockets that change their frame with each new user. The study includes theoretical-methodological movements that allude to the character of Deleuze (1985) about the assemblage schools and the avatars of the movement-images, sustained by the theoretical supplements of Gumbrecht (2010) about the presence production and the aesthetic experience. At last the goals are achieved and is presented the emergency of the narrative aesthetical assembly.
