Optimizing Player Engagement Through Iterative Level Design in a Melee-Driven Competitive Party Game

Ieong, Kit Shing, Landley, Marcus, Lever, Adam, Strömberg, Henrik January 2024 (has links)
This study investigates how the layout and structure of battle arenas in a melee-driven multiplayer split-screen game influence player engagement. By iterating on two arenas, making informed design decisions based on data from weekly playtests. Data collection involved observations, interviews, and an automated C# data-collecting tool. Metrics focused on social interaction, success, participation, and area interaction, linked to enjoyment, immersion, and level of interaction. We conducted six playtests with eleven arena iterations. Key findings include a player preference for arenas where they experienced higher success rates, either through hit accuracy or wins; excessive spatial restrictions leading to player frustration and decreased enjoyment due to mobility difficulties; and a general preference for asymmetrical arenas, which were favored for their varied gameplay and strategic opportunities, despite slightly lower active combat participation. The final arena design was asymmetrical, featuring four distinct zones, each providing unique gameplay experiences and strategic opportunities. This study highlights how arena design can enhance player engagement by balancing spatial dynamics and strategic elements.

Narušení kognitivní koordinace na rotující aréně systémovým podáním psychotomimetika dizocilpinu (MK-801). / Impaired cognitive coordination on a rotating arena after systemic dizocilpine (MK-801).

Buchtová, Helena January 2014 (has links)
Disruption of cognitive abilities such as learning, memory and spatial navigation accompanies a number of neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia. Cognitive symptoms are also most difficult to target by available pharmacotherapy.. Behavioral and molecular evidence point to a disruption of NMDA receptors and glutamatergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission. Impaired cognitive coordination has been proposed as a core cognitive deficit in schizophrenia. Non- competitive NMDAR antagonists are used to model schizophrenia- related symptoms in humans and in experimental animals. Place avoidance on a rotating arena is used to model cognitive functions disrupted in an animal model of schizophrenia. The goal of this thesis is to show whether the deficit in place avoidance is due to disrupted cognitive coordination or another effect of NMDAR antagonism such as hyperlocomotion, general learning deficit, or altered sensitivity.

Urbanismo ecológico, do princípio à ação: o caso de Itaquera, São Paulo, SP / Ecological urbanism, from the principle to the action: the case of Itaquera, São Paulo, SP

Akinaga, Patricia Harumi 23 May 2014 (has links)
Ecological Urbanism has emerged as a way to reconcile the landscape with urban occupation, ruled by the potentialities and limitations of natural resources. Green áreas do not function only beautifying and improving the visual and environmental quality, they become true engineering artifacts and elements of a high performance green infrastructure. The street tree system gains strength and scale while connecting fragments of urban forests and green areas scattered in the urban fabric. The research results change the look on the river floodplains. Segregated in the contemporary city, under Ecological Urbanism principles, floodplains become structural elements and links of the urban fabric adding great value. The thesis presents the hypothesis that it is possible to implement the Ecological Urbanism in São Paulo through the implementation of a comprehensive process and tools ranging from public policies, private sector actions and community engagement resulting on the improvement of environmental quality and urban life. The research focuses on Itaquera neighborhood impacted by the implementation of large urban facilities part of an institutional hub and home to the new soccer stadium of Corinthians club that will host World Cup 2014 games. Through field surveys, mapping and analysis of case studies in the United States and in South Africa is possible to identify a clear opportunity for transformation in the vicinity of the arena based on ecological principles. At last, the research presents an Ecological Urbanism proposal for the surroundings of the Arena Corinthians taking advantage of its local potentiality, green areas, hydrograph and new dynamic as a result of new public and private investments.

We know this discourse can be interpreted from 2 point of views, the functionalist, which institutionalizes the official discourse, and the strategic, which understands the company’s social activism as market strategy and intention to empower its social control. So, instead of analyze only what companies say about their social projects, we tried to identify what the benefited of these project have to say about them. After the discourse analysis of them, two main reflections are possible. The first one, characterizes and presents the implications of understanding these projects as gifts by the benefiters. The second one, presents the reflection before, inside a citizenship concept, which understands the public arena as a place which creates social actors with capability of exercising rights. This capability, in the communication’s point of view, defines such as private companies’ representations in public arena, as indicates paths to circulation of different models of value institutionalization in societies / O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender como a recepção do discurso da responsabilidade social se dá no dia-a-dia dos projetos sociais realizados ou patrocinados por empresas privadas.

This research aims to know and understand the Programa Mais Educação (“More Education” Program - PME) and the discourses on learning in the practical sphere from a case study with managers and teachers of the public school network in the city of São Leopoldo, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The research was guided by the theoretical and conceptual perspectives of Ball and Bowe’s policy cycle approach (1992) and based on the works of Mainardes (2006), which provided an analytical model for studying policies that allows the coming and going among different spheres that constitute policies in general and the PME in particular. To attribute meaning to discourses by teachers and managers, the theory of Discourse Analysis, in its French formulation by Michel Pechêux, was used (1988). PME documents were analyzed and semi-structured interviews with managers and teachers were conducted. The analyses of educational policies were based on Teodoro (2011), Afonso (2010, 2013), Ravitch (2011), Werle (2005, 2010, 2011), among others. From the data produced in the interviews and the object of the study, the following analytical categories could be drawn: (Re)appropriation of the PME in the practical sphere and interferences in educational policies; the PME: a school within a school; learning in the PME, its concepts, and evidences: concrete or abstract?, the PME structure: school’s responsibility; supervisors in the PME: the third way’s ideas and the discourses of not knowing rendered concrete. The categories used evidenced that the (re)appropriation of the PME in the practical sphere was inceptive due to the few possibilities of discussion and re-elaboration of the policy within the studied school. The PME is understood as another school within the school due to the managerial and fragmented way in which the Program’s activities are not known and articulated by the teachers. The PME was seen as in line with the principles of globalization, neoliberalism, and the new managerialism, brought forth from the sphere of influence. The PME proposes strengthening the school’s functions, attributing the responsibility for social rights for children and adolescents to the school. Finally, learning is evidenced in the speech of managers and teachers from the results of large-scale evaluations through the IDEB.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Elaine Regina Correa Brandao.pdf: 5199379 bytes, checksum: 85266453099661239d6ff9817c132930 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-12-10 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / To perform the World Cup 2014, Brazil seeks economic and financial feasibility of investments in projects. However, this whole organization to the world depends on the efficiency and effectiveness in the management of projects of the host cities; projects that are planned and executed by the three tiers of government (Federal, State and Municipal). In this context, this study aims to identify the structure of the Planning, Execution and Control of projects from the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, Cuiabá, capital of Mato Grosso. So, we defined the theoretical framework based on the concepts of renowned authors who talk about relevant aspects: Planning, Implementation and Control, especially in the public sector for the management of projects. Regarding methodology, we chose to study with a qualitative approach exploratory and descriptive, using a case study on the design of Arena Pantanal held at Secretária Extraordinária da Copa (SECOPA) in Cuiabá-MT, where we performed the data collection, document analysis and interviews. To make the analysis of results, we used additional data obtained from a secondary site and available in the SECOPA. Through them, we conclude that the World Cup 2014 tends to project the host city of Cuiabá-MT, where the design of the master plan of the project was based in order to meet the budget Laws prioritizing the needs of society and involving large investments in infrastructure, such as the construction of Arena Pantanal Multiuso. Therefore, the SECOPA has been working with the challenges, risks and constraints (expropriations, fundraising, lawsuits etc..). Remarkable, also, the many opportunities (increase in employment generation, income, consumption, projecting the city as a tourist attraction, urban mobility), besides adding other direct and indirect benefits, expressive and positively affecting the socioeconomic development of Cuiabá- MT / Para a realização da Copa do Mundo de 2014 o Brasil busca a viabilidade econômica e financeira dos investimentos nos projetos.

An ethnography of school districts leaders.

Jarroux, Pauline 25 March 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the bureaucratic routine of agents of school districts - the decentralized school administration - in Benin, and the ways in which they "make" primary school on a day-to-day basis. Relying on a fifteen months-fieldwork research (2012-2015) conducted mainly in two school districts of the country, this dissertation studies more specifically the leaders' authority - inspectors and pedagogical advisors - over the local management of school that they claim to have lost with the democratic opening in the 1990s. Through a socio-historical analysis of the construction of inspections and the inspectors' occupational group, the study of the circulation of authority within the school's local arena, and the inspectors' hierarchical and pedagogical relations with teachers, I show how public authority is negociated within the local education service. In doing so, I document the strategies at play between first and second-level authorities through the relations maintained with the hierarchical authorities, the unions, the teachers, the parents or the town hall. The dynamics of dialogue, negociation or circumvention of the school district participate in the day-to-day functioning of school and question the local administration's authority over school issues. I also analyse the effects of recent managerial reforms on the inspectors and advisors' working conditions and their professional culture. By demonstrating the coexistence of the figure of the "werewolf" inspector, the "counsellor" inspector and the "manager" inspector, I do not only question the transformations in the ethos of professionals and in the ways of being "a leader", I also question the multiplicity of ways of making the State and making school in Benin's classrooms.

Kapacitets- och känslighetsanalys av bagagehanteringssystem på Arlanda flygplats / Capacity and sensitivity analysis of luggage handling system at Stockholm-Arlanda airport

Bernandersson, Martin January 2005 (has links)
</p> / <p>This is a capacity and sensitivity analysis of a baggage handling system at Stockholm-Arlanda airport. The study is a Master's Thesis in Communication and Transport Systems Engineering at the University of Linköping. The study was done on behalf of the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration. The analysis tool that was used is simulation. </p><p>In the study, a simulation model of the baggage handling system was implemented in the simulation program Arena. A base scenario containing the traffic program from one week in 2004 was created and used as a reference scenario. A total of 8 different scenarios were created to form the capacity and sensitivity analyses. </p><p>The capacity analysis showed that the baggage handling system will be able to handle the forecasted increases in traffic over the next few years with relative ease. The X-ray machines are currently not working at anywhere near full capacity. However, the system is currently not being used in an efficient way. The pocket allocation method is far from optimal because flights that use more than one pocket are allocated adjacent pockets only which can be very inefficient. This method needs to be revised for the system to work efficiently. </p><p>The sensitivity analysis showed that the system is very vulnerable if certain things happen. In particular if the communication link with the Baggage Source Message-central in London is lost there will be big problems because all luggage will go to the Manual Encoding Station (MES). The MES will then be very digested and it will take a considerably larger amount of time for the baggage to pass through the system. Problems will also occur if one of the two Level 2 X-ray-machines break down. The remaining machine cannot handle all the baggage by itself, especially not if there are flights to the USA about to depart since baggage heading for the USA must be run through X-ray Level 2. It is strongly recommended that handling plans are formed to minimise the effects of such events.</p>

Doing Internet Dating : In the Search for the Future Someone

Fürst, Henrik January 2010 (has links)
In this explorative study internet dating is studied as shared commitment to a common collective activity. Focus is on social formative emotions and internet dating in the rhythm of everyday life. The study is based on an interactionist theory/method package related to grounded theory and situational analysis. Sixty-eight participants of a Swedish internet dating site have been interviewed by e-mail. Fifteen of these interviews were followed up by a second one. Internet dating mainly occurs during evenings at home. It is kept separate from other commitments in daily life, such as work, as collisions of activities might lead to emotional and tension-ridden situations. The essential social process involved in internet dating is searching for a future someone/something. This process is given strength by the future- and action-oriented emotion of hope of happiness. The future is represented in imagination by talk about sought for emotions. The internet daters want to end their commitment to internet dating, while the internet dating company, for economic reasons, wants them to continue with the activity. The internet daters learn to manage their spontaneous emotions; they learn not to show "too much" future-oriented emotions. Instead a "relaxed" attitude, based on the present, is encouraged among participants. The act of imagining and searching for a future someone/something is formalized and organized by means of internet dating sites. Emotions are thus being commercialized in the interest of the internet dating company.
