A Case Study of a Business Process Modeling in Mobile ERP SystemBroomé Clason, Agnes, Holmberg, Maria January 2019 (has links)
The development in information systems has led to an increasing number ofbusinesses wishing to digitize their work processes. The growing mobile use ofEnterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems on devices such as smartphones andtablets has led businesses to place greater demands on their information systems andsuppliers of these. ERP system in the future must be able to function mobile andfacilitate the work for the employees instead of being another IT system that will solvethe organisation's all challenges. This case study was made at a wholesale company in Skåne, which was in the midstof an ERP implementation with Microsoft Dynamics. This study has investigated howthe work with business processes looked before and during the implementation of thenew system. The background to the case study was to investigate whether there wereany correlation between how well the business processes were evaluated, adapted andhow successful the business's ERP implementation was. The case study aims toinvestigate how process modeling and Business Process Management (BPM) cansupport this kind of implementation of mobile ERP systems. The activity in the study is a mediumsizedsales and distribution company withoffices in 4 Swedish locations. In 2015, the business began digitizing the entireorganization. The IT system consisted of several different systems that had beenadapted over time to fit the needs of the organisation. As part of the implementation, they chose to use a Business Process Modeling tool to introduce the system and trainthe users of the processes in the new system. The implementation phase of the projectbegan in February 2017 and in February 2019 the business still has not set a Golivedate. The average time for an ERP implementation is 17.4 months [5]. Since theGolivedate business has been moved, it is now considered that the operation'simplementation is delayed and over the average time. The work on the processes before the actual start of the project is perceived asinadequate from BPM, the conclusion is drawn that the delay of the "Go live date" ispartly due to the fact that the company and the organization have not analyzed theirown processes and have relied too much on the consulting company and RapidValueBPM to handle learning and implementation.

Today's fast changing environment imposes new challenges for effective management of business processes. In such a highly dynamic environment, the business process design becomes time-consuming, error-prone, and costly. Therefore, seeking reuse and adaptability is a pressing need for a successful business process design. Configurable reference models recently introduced were a step toward enabling a process design by reuse while providing flexibility. A configurable process model is a generic model that integrates multiple process variants of a same business process in a given domain through variation points. These variation points are referred to as configurable elements and allow for multiple design options in the process model. A configurable process model needs to be configured according to a specific requirement by selecting one design option for each configurable element.Recent research activities on configurable process models have led to the specification of configurable process modeling notations as for example configurable Event-Driven Process Chain (C-EPC) that extends the EPC notation with configurable elements. Since then, the issue of building and configuring configurable process models has been investigated. On the one hand, as configurable process models tend to be very complex with a large number of configurable elements, many automated approaches have been proposed to assist their design. However, existing approaches propose to recommend entire configurable process models which are difficult to reuse, cost much computation time and may confuse the process designer. On the other hand, the research results on configurable process model design highlight the need for means of support to configure the process. Therefore, many approaches proposed to build a configuration support system for assisting end users selecting desirable configuration choices according to their requirements. However, these systems are currently manually created by domain experts which is undoubtedly a time-consuming and error-prone task.In this thesis, we aim at automating the support of the variability in configurable process models. Our objective is twofold: (i) assisting the configurable process design in a fin-grained way using configurable process fragments that are close to the designers interest and (ii) automating the creation of configuration support systems in order to release the process analysts from the burden of manually building them. In order to achieve the first objective, we propose to learn from the experience gained through past process modeling in order to assist the process designers with configurable process fragments. The proposed fragments inspire the process designer to complete the design of the ongoing process. To achieve the second objective, we realize that previously designed and configured process models contain implicit and useful knowledge for process configuration. Therefore, we propose to benefit from the experience gained through past process modeling and configuration in order to assist process analysts building their configuration support systems. Such systems assist end users interactively configuring the process by recommending suitable configuration decisions.

Hodnocení úrovně procesního řízení v produkčních systémech / Evaluation of Process Management in Production SystemsJuřica, Pavel January 2014 (has links)
Business Process Management, the object of this thesis, has still growing importance in the functioning of the organization, and has a positive impact on its success. In the view of a dynamic market environment, Business Process Management has an inherent importance in the strategic business development. When an organization decides to implement process control and manage its activities, it should be also able to measure its processes and evaluate them. This ability gives the organization the possibility to efficiently and effectively manage processes and identify shortcomings for creation of business strategy on a competitive market. This dissertation presents a new evaluation model of a process control in the production systems, which organizations can use as a guide for further development. This work brings a new perspective in the field of process control and its evaluation of the production systems. The main objective of this dissertation is to design the assessment of the process control levels in the production systems on the basis of theoretical research and practical experience. The proposed solution was then verified by field research in selected organizations.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how HMLV companies can identify their processes with potential for improvements and then streamline them. To accomplish the purpose two research questions have been made: [1] What processes in HMLV-companies have the biggest potential for improvement? [2] How can an HMLV-companies increase their efficiency and improve their processes? Method – The study is a case study that consists mainly of collecting qualitative data but also some quantitative data. Data was collected via three methods, interview, observations, and document studies. Observations, document studies, and unstructured interviews were then performed at the case company with the aim of mapping its processes. Finally, a semi-structured interview was conducted with key people at the company. Triangulation was used in all methods to determine and increase the validity. Finally, the theoretical framework was compared with the data collected to answer the study’s questions. Findings - The study results were based on leans seven types of wastes and SIPOC (Supply-Input-Process-Output-Customer). As a result, the purchasing and design processes were the ones with the greatest potential for improvement. Based on this result, it emerged that methods that can streamline HMLV-companies are 5S, employee involvement, and quality at the source. It was also revealed that Business Process Management (BPM) was suitable for streamlining work. Implications – The results of this study may be relevant to other HMLV-companies. Other companies can use the same methods to identify potential for improvement. Then lean tools and BPM can be applied to streamline their operations. HMLV-companies should adopt the methodology from this study to their own context, which means that it requires competence in process identification, improvement work, and efficiency. Limitations – For this study, there are three limitations. The first limitation is that the study only examines process identification and does not concern implementation. The collection of empirical data during the project has been limited due to COVID-19 and the distance between the students and the case company. The final limitation is that the study only examines BPM and lean related to HMLV environments.

A company must be able to describe and to remain responsive against endogenous or exogenous events. Such flexibility can be obtained with the Business Process Management (BPM). Through a BPM approach, different transformations operate on process models, developed by the business analyst and IT expert. A non-alignment is created between these heterogeneous models during their manipulation: this is the "business-IT gap" as described in the literature. The objective of our work is to propose a methodological framework for a better management of business processes in order to reach a systematic alignment from their modelling to their implementation within the target system. Using concepts from Model-driven Enterprise and Information System engineering, we define a generic approach ensuring an intermodal consistency. Its role is to maintain and provide all information related to the model structure and semantics. By allowing a full restitution of a transformed model, in the sense of reverse engineering, our platform enables synchronization between analysis model and implementation model. The manuscript also presents the possible match between process engineering and BPM through a multi- erspective scale.

The strategic alignment between the Information Technology (IT) and the Business areas is motivated by the need of large organizations to exploit IT\'s ability to transform business processes and deliver good products and services to stand out in a competitive scenario. In this context, Business Process Management (BPM) and Service Orientation gain space in organizations, since they are able to automate and optimize the needed processes and services for the business. In the process and services treatment, it is important to attend not only functional properties (i.e., activities that must be executed), but also non-functional properties, such as operating and quality constraints; thereby, it is possible to minimize waste of IT investments due to inefficiency and rework. The most prestigious languages for business process modeling, including BPMN, lack representation of these non-functional properties, which creates a gap between the identification of functional and non-functional properties as well as between the process modeling and its implementation. This masters project aimed to contribute to filling this gap by proposing the StrAli-BPM (Strategic Alignment with BPM) approach, which is divided in two parts BLA@BPMN and BLA2SLA: the former to extend the BPMN language aiming to embody non-functional properties, in the form of BLAs (Business Level Agreements) enriched with KPIs (Key Performance Indicators); and the latter to semi-automatically derive a set of SLAs (Service Level Agreements), associated with web services, from a pre-defined BLA. In doing so, IT and Business areas share a common language, simplifying dialogue and alignment between organizational objectives and IT obligations.

SOA governance proposition using dynamic capabilities: an application at university digital communication center.Onoe, Alberto Yoshinobu 03 November 2010 (has links)
SOA Service Oriented Architecture has been established as the paradigm for IT Information Technology systems development, due to its features that promotes flexibility, agility, reuse and scalability. However, an SOA application to be successful must be supported by effective governance. How to develop and maintain this governance up to date in a fast and unpredictable environment is a great challenge. This work aims to present a methodology that allows a modest IT infrastructure to be able to cope with SOA governance, using dynamic capabilities (particular abilities and routines of an organization). The contribution of this work is the link (practically inexistent) between lines of research in SOA governance and dynamic capabilities. To accomplish this purpose, this work sought to what must be done (framework), who is the responsible for the development and maintenance (owner), and how to perform the SOA governance (platform). The development has been founded by an extensive research of involved concepts, inference of required dynamic capabilities to maintain the SOA governance and the development of a platform that allows a process analyst to change SOA governance interactively. The results were a methodology and a maintenance system of SOA operational governance. The methodology comprises the requirements and changes in the analysis procedure of the elements of the SOA governance. The system is composed of an agile and effective implementation framework and platform that enable how to apply dynamic capabilities into the SOA governance. The Introduction presents examples of practical application (motivation), the goal, the justification, and the scope. Chapter 2 presents an extensive literature review about SOA, SOA governance, and dynamic capabilities, from both academic and commercial literature. Chapter 3 presents the methodology and a brief history of the development. Chapter 4 presents the development of the proposed system. Chapter 5 discusses some topics related to the proposition. Chapter 6 presents the conclusion and proposals for future developments.

Opportunities and limitations of BPM initiatives in public administrations across levels and institutionsAhrend, Norbert 04 April 2014 (has links)
Business Process Management (BPM) is already widely used in the private sector. The importance of knowledge management and BPM in the public administration also increases due to the advancing demographic change, the increasing cost pressures, the consequent lack of resources as well as the increased demand of customers for administrative services. Despite a uniform legal framework, the business processes are executed differently in different administrations. There is little exchange of expertise and experience between BPM projects. The goal of the research project “National Process Library” (NPL) is to create a platform to exchange and reuse processes and BPM expertise about and among German administrations. For the dissertation at hand, essential design elements of this platform have been designed and have been subject to a first evaluation. Many findings about the successful implementation of process management in the private sector cannot be directly transferred to the public administration, as there exist important differences. Hence, the second contribution focuses on the different implementation strategies of BPM in public administrations in Europe. The current degree of implementation and maturity of BPM in public administrations is generally low. Many administrations face similar challenges and offer identical or overlapping services. However, the willingness to share knowledge about business processes is very limited. Therefore, the exchange of process knowledge could lead to immense savings. The third contribution investigates the circumstances, drives and inhibitors to improve process knowledge sharing in public organizations. The last contribution represents the essential components of a federal information management in the public administration in Germany. The derived framework combines and integrates data and information from the areas of services, processes and forms of public administrations.
