Porta Salvia, Carme 09 April 2003 (has links)
The present thesis is an attempt of analysis of the human figure representation in Zush's artistic carreer and -beside the study of his artistic trajectory- his respective position among his comtemporaries and others artists belonging to traditions remotes from his . If Zush's former expression highlights by his intimistic representation , it is soon replaced by the depict of an omnipresent, unique and frontal character facing the viewer. In the chronological course of studio work, the constant change performed to the image leads us through distorsion and exageration to the creation of monsters. The plastic translation of this paticular metamorphosis is portrayed in these stranges and impressives masks. The second chapter focus on the iconographical analysis of Zush's work and a formal study of the most recurrent figures appearing in all his creations: faces, eyes and gestures. We study how the line is taking ownership of Zush's artistic dimension, such in sketches, paintings, calligraphie and handwritting, studied in the third chapter .Digital work -described in the fourth chapter- is another vertex of Zush's expression, regarded not only as a mean to a end but also as another medium of plastic expression. Indeed, from this point we can acknowledge the definitive change in the human figure representation and how the emphasis set on motion and fragmentation -paradigm of the digital creation- leads to internal confusion and a certain sense of lose .Fifth and sixth chapters track Zush's artistic biography and summarize the main technics used during all his career . In the seventh chapter i gathered an extended bibliography about Zush, a published and a general one, which i extensively used to carry out this research.

Forment Fernández, María del Mar 01 October 1999 (has links)

The effect of the circle of security parenting programme on parental self-efficacy and internalising behaviours in children

Rose, Jenny Lee January 2019 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Early Childhood development is an important phase of development, wherein the trajectory of the child’s life can potentially be determined. However, not all children experience positive outcomes, and many present with psychopathology. In particular, psychopathology in children will manifest as either externalizing behaviours or internalising behaviours. The treatment of internalising disorders becomes increasingly complex, as there isn’t always outward behaviour to give evidence to the inward difficulties. Literature amplifies the importance of the role of the parent in ensuring the well-being of the child and in working towards healthy developmental outcomes.

Partnership in mission : a critical historical evaluation of the relationship between ‘older’ and ‘younger’ churches with special reference to the World Mission Council policy of the Church of Scotland

Duncan, Graham A. 17 October 2007 (has links)
The writing of contemporary history has implications regarding objectivity, subjectivity, the idea of progress, ecumenical history and its relationship to world history. Riane Eisler’s dominator and partnership models in her cultural transformation theory provide an appropriate hermeneutical basis for a historical consideration of the concept of partnership in mission (PIM) along with traditional biblical concepts which have guided mission theology for centuries. Partnership in mission is a laudable concept in the furtherance of participation in God’s mission. It has a distinguished history despite the difficulties experienced in making it a functioning reality. It has had the potential to enable sending and receiving churches to experience fellowship, humility and dignity in relationships. However, the issue of power in the ‘older’ sending churches has been an intrusive factor in preventing the theory from becoming a reality. In the case of the Church of Scotland, which stands in the grand ecumenical tradition of the twentieth century, despite great strides being made over the years to develop mutually enriching relations, increasing problems presented the opportunity for partner relationships to become authentically interdependent. Unfortunately, vulnerability on the part of the Church of Scotland World Mission Council has led to a return to a colonial/dominator approach to partnership. Recent developments in the Church of Scotland indicate that partnership in mission, while still the official model on which mission policy is based, has been challenged in its essence. Attempts to reform the work of the World Mission Council by means of a business consultancy have added no apparent value to the work of the Council or to its worldwide relationships. A lack of flexibility characterises recent developments along with a refusal to examine any other possible models which will enable the maintenance of existing partner church relationships. This has resulted in policy decisions, which affect them deeply, being made without any reference to partner churches. Nor has the Church’s constituency in Scotland been adequately consulted. For the first time in recent history policy decisions of WMC have been the cause of much discussion and deep division within the Church of Scotland. Further, they have ruptured valuable long term relationships and have through differential approaches to partners posed a potential threat to relationships between younger churches and possibly to a diminution of the standing of the Church of Scotland in the ecumenical movement. Opportunities for repentance, self sacrifice and the growth of fellowship in relationships have been spurned to the eventual cost of the Church of Scotland. Authentic partnership in mission is a distinct possibility through the development of relations based on mutuality, where resources must be subject to the norms of accountability, horizontal relations and management of the gifts of God for the people of God. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Church History and Church Policy / unrestricted

Laying the Groundwork: Provider’s Experiences with Implementing Two Parenting Programs to Caregivers of Children Aged 2-6 Years in Ontario, Canada: A Mixed Methods Study / Providers Experiences Delivering Two Parenting Programs

Fernandes Melo, Matthew January 2023 (has links)
Introduction: Parenting programs have been identified as a valuable service provision to promote quality parent-child relationships and attachment styles. The Triple P positive parenting program and the Circle of Security parenting (COS-P) program are evidence-based interventions designed to prevent behavioral and emotional problems in children. However, there is a lack of literature on the experiences of providers delivering these programs in the Canadian context. This study aimed to investigate and characterize these experiences through a mixed-methods approach. Methods: A total of 83 providers participated in the cross-sectional portion of the study, completing readiness measures prior to program implementation. The qualitative descriptive component of the study involved a sub-group of 22 providers in semi-structured focus groups, 12 months after program implementation. Descriptive measures were analyzed using R studio V. 4.2.0, while NVIVO Version 13 was used to manage the thematic analysis of the focus groups. The mixed-methods component involved an explanatory sequential approach, which involved integrating the data via a joint display table. Results: Organizational readiness involving training, supervision, and support were crucial for program delivery. Barriers identified included a lack of support, overwhelming workload, difficulty engaging parents, and program-specific barriers, while facilitators included positive experiences with training, teamwork, confidence, virtual delivery, and managerial support. Discussion: The results suggest that organizational readiness is crucial to the successful delivery of these programs. Providers require training, supervision, and ongoing support to deliver these interventions effectively. Additionally, barriers and facilitators in the delivery of these programs were identified, which can inform future program implementation and improve outcomes. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights for organizations and providers to effectively deliver parenting programs like Triple P and COS-P by addressing barriers and facilitators of delivery, which can consequently improve parent-child relationships and attachment styles. / Thesis / Master of Public Health (MPH) / Effective delivery of evidence-based parenting programs is essential to promoting positive health outcomes for children and families. Unfortunately, very little research has investigated the experiences of providers delivering these programs. Due to this, our study applied a mixed methods approach that involved 83 providers who completed various readiness measures prior to program implementation, and 22 providers who participated in follow-up focus groups, 12 months after program implementation. The results of our study determined that organizational readiness, which is inclusive of training, supervision, and support, is critical to successful program delivery. Furthermore, we were able to identify barriers and facilitators of program delivery, which can inform future implementation efforts and improve program quality, while promoting positive outcomes for parents and children. This study provides unique insights into the experiences of parenting program providers in Canada and can serve as a tool to inform future program implementation and delivery efforts.

Tandem Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Ammonium And Sodium Oligoperoxide Adducts With The Application Of Two-dimensional Correlation Spectroscopy And Computational Chemistry

Frisch, Jessica Lynne 01 January 2012 (has links)
Oligoperoxides, H[OO(CH3)2C]nOOH, are formed as side products in the synthesis of the primary high explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP). Previous tandem mass spectrometry (MSn ) experiments using a quadrupole ion trap reported that the openchained oligoperoxide adducts of ammonium or sodium resulted in different product ions in the mass spectra. Dissociation mechanisms were previously proposed based on MSn experiments, where n > 2; however, a dissociation pathway achieved by an MSn experiment, where n > 2, may not necessarily be the same pathway achieved in an MS2 experiment. For this dissertation research, the collision induced dissociation pathways were investigated for the open-chained oligoperoxides in MS2 experiments utilizing a quadrupole ion trap. Tandem mass spectral experiments were performed for the openchained oligoperoxides ranging from the trimer to the octamer (n=3-8), including both ammonium and sodium adducts. The dissociation pathways were proposed as a result of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy applied to the mass spectral data, which was referred to as two-dimensional correlation mass spectrometry (2D-CMS). The 2DCMS method was first validated by analysis of simple and more complex kinetic models followed by simple and more complex molecules. To further aid in the elucidation of the dissociation mechanisms, computational chemistry was performed for the optimization of stable precursor and product ion structures and calculations of their relative energies and adduct dissociation energies.

Synthesis of Small Molecule and Polymeric Systems for the Controlled Release of Sulfur Signaling Molecules

Powell, Chadwick R. 13 August 2019 (has links)
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was recognized as a critical signaling molecule in mammals nearly two decades ago. Since this discovery biologists and chemists have worked in concert to demonstrate the physiological roles of H₂S as well as the therapeutic benefit of exogenous H₂S delivery. As the understanding of H₂S physiology has increased, the role(s) of other sulfur-containing molecules as potential players in cellular signaling and redox homeostasis has begun to emerge. This creates new and exciting challenges for chemists to synthesize compounds that release a signaling compound in response to specific, biologically relevant stimuli. Preparation of these signaling compound donor molecules will facilitate further elucidation of the complex chemical interplay within mammalian cells. To this end we report on two systems for the sustained release of H₂S, as well as other sulfur signaling molecules. The first system discussed is based on the N-thiocarboxyanhydride (NTA) motif. NTAs were demonstrated to release carbonyl sulfide (COS), a potential sulfur signaling molecule, in response to biologically available nucleophiles. The released COS is shown to be rapidly converted to H₂S in the presence of the ubiquitous enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA). A synthetic route that affords NTAs with reactive functionalities was devised and the functional "parent" NTAs were successfully conjugated to a variety of substrates, ranging from small molecules to polymers. These functional NTAs provide a platform from which a library of NTA-based COS/H₂S may be readily prepared convergently in an effort to move towards H₂S-releasing drug and polymer conjugates. Additionally, preliminary in vitro cytotoxicity studies indicate that NTAs are noncytotoxic at concentrations above 100 µM. The second system discussed in this dissertation leverages the 1,6-benzyl elimination reaction (or self-immolative reaction) to facilitate the release of a persulfide (R–SSH) from a small molecule prodrug platform as well as a separate system that releases COS/H₂S from a polymer. The self-immolative persulfide prodrug was designed to be responsive to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and demonstrates efficacy as an antioxidant in vitro. Furthermore, the polymeric COS/H₂S self-immolative system was designed to respond to reducing agents, including H₂S itself, and shows promise as a H₂S signal amplification platform. / Doctor of Philosophy / Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) has long been recognized as a malodorous and toxic byproduct of industrial chemical processes. However, the discovery of H₂S as a key signaling molecule in mammals has drastically shifted the paradigm of H₂S research over the last two decades. Research into the production and roles of H₂S in the body is ongoing, but has pointed to the implication of changes in H₂S production to the onset of a variety of disease states, including cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. As alterations in the body’s production of H₂S have been correlated to certain disease states, collaborative research efforts among biologists and chemists have demonstrated the utility of H₂S-based therapeutics in helping to alleviate these disease states. Our understanding of the roles of H₂S in the body, and potential benefits derived from H₂S-releasing drugs, can only continue to advance with the development and improvement of H₂S releasing compounds. The first portion of this dissertation focuses on the synthesis of a new class of H₂S-releasing compounds, termed N-thiocarboxyanhydrides (NTAs). NTAs release H₂S through an intermediate sulfur-containing molecule, carbonyl sulfide (COS), which may have signaling properties independent of H₂S. The COS that is released from the NTAs is rapidly converted to H₂S by the action of the ubiquitous enzyme carbonic anhydrase. A variety of functional NTAs were synthesized, which in turn were used to prepare a small library of NTA-based COS/H₂S releasing compounds. This work informs the preparation of H₂S-drug or H₂S-polymer conjugates. The second portion of this dissertation examines a class of compounds broadly termed self-immolative prodrugs. The self-immolative prodrug platform was leveraged to release H₂S, or persulfides (R–SSH), another class of sulfur-containing molecules of biological interest. The self-immolative persulfide prodrug system was designed to be responsive to reactive oxygen species (ROS), a harmful cellular byproduct. The persulfide donor was successful in mitigating the harmful effects of ROS in heart cells. Independently, a polymeric self-immolative H₂S releasing system was designed to depolymerize in the presence of H₂S, resulting in the generation of 6-8-fold excess of H₂S upon depolymerization. We envision the self-immolative H₂S-releasing polymer will show promise in biological applications where a vast excess of H₂S is needed rapidly.

Polisstudenters grad av empati och kulturell orientering. / Police student’s degree of empathy and cultural orientation.

Almström, Jenny January 2020 (has links)
Empathy as well as how to relate to others and oneself is an important factor for good police work and communication with citizens. Through a web survey, based on the Basic Empathy Scale-Adults (BES-A) and the Culture Orientation Scale (COS), this study asked 141 police students from all Swedish universities who conduct police education about their self-perceived empathy (affective/cognitive) and cultural orientation (individualism/collectivism). The result showed that the majority had moderate empathy and higher cognitive empathy than affective empathy according to BES-A. In general, the police students had average points at COS. Individualism also gave average points, while collectivism gave high points. Two-way ANOVA showed that women had significant higher empathy than men.

Enhancing Out-of-Season Production of Tomatoes and Lettuce Using High Tunnels

Hunter, Britney L. 01 December 2010 (has links)
The growing season for vegetable crops is limited by freezing temperatures in arid high elevation climates such as northern Utah. Logan, Utah (41.73 N, 111.83 W, 1382 m elevation) has a short, variable growing season with an average frost-free period of 135 days. Extending the growing season provides growers with an opportunity to extend revenue into a normally unproductive period and benefit from out-of-season price premiums. High tunnels have been used to effectively extend the growing season for numerous crops by providing cold temperature protection. However, limited high tunnel research has been performed in arid high elevation regions that experience extreme temperature fluctuations. The use of high tunnels was investigated in North Logan, Utah to extend the growing season for tomatoes and lettuce. In 2009 and 2010, supplemental heating under low tunnels within high tunnels was investigated to provide early season cold temperature protection for tomatoes. Sunbrite tomatoes were transplanted into four high tunnels over three planting dates. Tomatoes were subjected to supplemental heating treatments including soil warming cables alone or in conjunction with 40-watt incandescent lights for air heating. The highest early season and overall yield was achieved with the 17 Mar. planting date. Early season yield was significantly less for the latest planting date (7 Apr.) compared to the 17 Mar. and 30 Mar. planting dates. Early season yield was significantly greater for treatment plots with soil plus air heating, and soil heating alone significantly improved total yield. The use of a vertical structure within a high tunnel was investigated to improve productivity for lettuce. Parris Island Cos lettuce was consecutively transplanted from spring 2008 to spring 2010 in a high tunnel at the same site. The vertical growing system allowed for 31 plants*m-2 in south oriented gutters, and 45 plants*m-2 in east/west oriented gutters compared to 25 plants*m-2 in the ground including space for maintenance. Root zone temperatures in the gutters fluctuated widely in response to air temperatures, and super-optimal soil temperatures impeded growth. Productivity (g*m-2) in the gutters was only significantly greater than productivity in the ground soil during the spring and fall months when soil and air temperatures were not frequently below 0 °C or above 24 °C. This thesis includes both research results and extension factsheets intended for growers interested in high tunnel production of tomato and lettuce.

The corrosion microbiologically induced (CMI) reaches all the sectors of production of the industry in Petroleum oil and Gas and demands expressive expensive and investments for prevention and control. The goal of this thesis was to evaluate the biocide and antibiofouling activities of secondary metabolites obtained from endophytic microorganisms of Lippia gracilis Schauer as well of the essential oil (pure and in microemulsified system) from this species on microbial biofilms in 1020 AISI carbono steel. The experiments for biocide activity used 1020 AISI carbon steel plate arranged in Erlenmyers and dynamic system with forced circulation for obtaining of the total biofilms from water produced by oil. The assessment for biocide of the metabolites from endophytic of L. gracilis Schauer resulted of the quantification of these species of bacteria in the quantification techniques by absorbance in more probable numbers (MPN), before and after the treatments, had been identified by gas chromatography coupled the spectrophotometry in mass (CG-MS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) just those who demonstrated activities. The treatments consisted in evaluating the concentrations 0, 100, 150 and 200 ?g/L in each metabolites on biofilms in times contact to zero, two, three and four weeks, with three repetition by treatments. The antibiofouling action was made in the contact of the metabolites in the highest concentration (200 ?g/L) with the bioplates before being inserted into the dynamic system. The antimicrobial action of the essential oil L. gracilis Schauer in the pure form and in a microemulsified system was evaluated by the quantification bacteria reducer of sulphate (BRS), oxidant of iron (BOI), fungi, aerobic bacteria and total anaerobes by the techniques of dilution, platingpourplate, spectrophotometry in mass (MS) and micrographs analysis made before and after the treatments. The anticorrosive activity of all bioproducts was evaluated by electrochemical impedance and polarization, gravimetric examinations of mass loss and quantification of pites, as well in the obtaining of micrographs of the carbon steel`s surface. Samples of L. gracilis Schauer were collected in the city of Mossor? - RN and were isolated fungi and bacteria from the roots and leaves. A new type of fungus was discovered and identified as Achaetomium lippae. Three metabolites were obtained: two fungi (LGS-Lf1 and LGS-Lf2, being "LGS" for L. gracilis Schauer, "L": leaf, ?f?: fungus and "R" for root) and one of bacteria (LGS-Rb1, being "LGS" for L. gracilis Schauer, "R": root and "b": bacterium). The results showed that there was a difference in the biocide activity and antibiofouling between the metabolites from endophytic of L. gracilis Schauer assessed, being just the LGS-Lf1 being efficient over all the microorganisms tested, avoiding the formation of biofouling on the surface of the material and reducing the rate of microbial growth at zero after 96 hours of contact at the highest concentration evaluated. The electrochemical and gravimetric tests displayed that for all the metabolites occured change in the anticorrosive activity. The L. gracilis Schauer essential oil evaluated in the pure form inhibited significally the growth in vito of C. bifermentans and of fungi in biofilm, reducing their growth rate to zero as from 20 ?g.L-1. The electrochemical and gravimetric tests showed that the concentration of 60 ?g.L-1 of the essential oil was efficient in the reduction of corrosion. In the tests, using the microemulsified system, the essential oil inhibited the growth of BRS, BOF and fungi 16 days later in contact and had antibiofouling activity after 96 hours in contact with the AISI 1020 bioplates of carbon steel. Therefore, the metabolites from endophytic of L. gracilis Schauer as well its essential oil are shown as new alternatives of natural biocides efficient in the control of the corrosion microbiologically induced.
