Arab Muslim nurses experiences of the meaning of caring

Lovering, Sandra January 2008 (has links)
Doctorate of Health Sciences / Abstract The aim of this study was to understand the meaning of caring as experienced by Arab Muslim nurses within the context of Arab culture. A qualitative approach using ethnographic methodology based on the approaches of Geertz (1973), Fitzgerald (1997) and Davies (1999) was used to develop a description that embeds the phenomena of the nurses’ meaning of caring within the cultural context. Good and Good’s (1981) meaning–centred approach was used to interpret the nurse’s explanatory models of health, illness and healing that inform the caring experience. This study conveys the cultural worlds of Arab Muslim nurses from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt while caring for Arab Muslim patients in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected over a four year period (2004-2007). Arab Muslim nurses have a religiously informed explanatory model where health is spiritual, physical and psycho-social well-being. Spirituality is central to the belief system where spiritual needs take priority over physical needs as a distinctive care pattern. The professional health belief system blends into the nurses’ cultural and religious belief system, forming a culturally distinct explanatory health beliefs system. This finding suggests that in non-Western health contexts, professional models are not dominant but incorporated into nurses’ indigenous worldviews in a way that makes sense within the culture. Caring is based on shared meanings between nurse and patient. Caring is an act of spiritualty and an action by the nurse to facilitate his or her own spirituality and that of the patient. In turn, the nurse receives reward from Allah for caring actions. A distinct ethical framework based on principles of Islamic bio-ethics guides the nurses in their caring. This research provides the missing link between Western professional nursing systems and Arab Muslim nurses’ caring models and contributes to the development of a caring model that is relevant to, and reflective of, Arab cultural and Islamic religious values. This caring model can provide direction for nurse education and the provision of care to Muslim patients, whether in Arab cultures, Islamic societies or with immigrant Muslim populations. In addition, it provides the basis for an Islamic nursing identity and a beginning point for improving the moral status and image of nursing in the Middle East.

Omvårdnadsåtgärder vid andningssvårigheter hos patienter med sjukdomen KOL : En litteraturstudie / Caring of patients with COPD and breathing difficulties : A literature study

Edvardsson, Anton, Nilsson, Karin January 2008 (has links)
Med en god relation skapas trygghet och tillförlitlighet vilket är det viktigaste för patienter med KOL.</p> / <p>BACKGROUND: COPD is a disease that increasingly affects more patients around the world; by 2020 is it is projected to be the third most common cause of death. Närståendes upplevelser i den palliativa vården

Heian, Ninna, Norio, Daniela January 2009 (has links)
Genom utbildning skaomvårdnadspersonalen bättre informera om närståendes behov ochpå så sätt tillgodose närståendes önskan.</p> / <p>When death is near, the demand is high on the next of kin’s andthe nursingstaff. The nursingstaffs need to work in team in order tojudge the needs of the next of kin’s and support them in their grief. The next of kin’s strive to handle, understand and to find ameaning in the palliative care. They need to get involved and toget a sense of constancy. The aim of this study is to illustrate theexperience that the next of kin’s have towards patients in thepalliative care. With scientific studies we made a literaturesummary, to get insight in next of kin’s experience. From theresults the following teams concluded: involvement, support, information, next of kin’s experience of feelings, differences ofcultures. The result also shows when nursingstaff were busy anddidn’t have time; next of kin’s often experienced that they didn’tget the information they needed. The lack of information can leadto dissatisfaction. When the next of kin’s get the support they needfrom the nursingstaff they can be more supportive to their dyingloved ones. More effort should be put on educating thenursingstaff in the needs of the next of kin’s, to meet theirdemands on the palliative care.</p>

A espiritualidade na teoria do cuidado transpessoal de Jean Watson: análise de conceito / The spirituality in Watson´s Transpersonal Theory: Concept Analysis

Ramon Moraes Penha 26 June 2012 (has links)
Encontrar as respostas certas; 3. Casos Modelo; 4. Casos Contrários; 5. Casos Relacionados; 6. Casos de Difícil Diagnóstico; 7. Casos Inventados; 8. O Contexto Social; 9. Anseios Basilares; 10. / This study aimed to analyze the concept of spirituality from Human Caring Theory by Jean Watson and Discuss the relationship between Experiences of Consciousness (Spiritual), in the interaction field called by theorist of \'Present Moment, \'Phenomenological Field\' and \'Actual Caring Occasion. Method: Wilsons concept clarification was used. The following steps were followed: 1. Isolate questions of concept 2. Find the right answers; 3.Model Case 4. Contrary Cases 5. Related Cases 6. Borderline 7. Invented Cases 8. Social Context 9. Underlying anxiety 10. Practical Results and 11. Results in language. The guiding questions for analysis were: a) What is the nature of Spirituality in Caring? b) Spirituality differs from materiality in relations of care, since the first would require different levels of interaction for a more subtle dimension could be accessed\'. Methodological steps performed this study concluded that: the Theory of Human Caring Spirituality is conceived as the World of Spirit, experienced through a phenomenological field of interaction between two beings characterized by the occurrence of experiences of consciousness (or spirit). In Human Care Theory were the background for Spirituality: Soul/Spirit, characterized by: Immortality, Immateriality, Essence, Self Knowledge, Consciousness, and Creative Energy, Individuality, set by Soul /Spirit and Transcendence physical, mental and emotional, and finally, Experiences of Consciousness, indicated by: Intuition, Experience Spiritual/ Supernatural / Metaphysical / Mystical. The attributes found to access the spiritual dimension were the ten Clinical Caritas Process. It was observed that the Patient Process-Interactional Professional is directed from the triad: Mind-Body-Spirit where the outcomes are related to the occurrence of Care Real Deal, the perceived connection from Life Stories, dilatation of Perception Field phenomenal, breaks in the space-time, culminating in transpersonal Process and Human Care, evidenced by the Deep Contact with the Other and I can, Use of Language Relevant to describe the experience and, finally, Systematization Plan of Care Data Obtained from Experience

Rönne-Petersen, Isabella, Handspik Dahlänger, Ingrid January 2020 (has links)
Background: Nurses wellbeing in the workplace is paramount for both patient security as well as for nurse retention, in which their motivation to nurse plays an important part for them to keep nursing. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ experiences of finding motivations to nurse. Method: A descriptive literature review based on eleven articles in caring science. Result: The result contains two themes in which there are two subthemes each. The themes as well as the subthemes aim to describe experiences that help nurses find motivation to nurse. The theme Importance of meaningfulness describes nurses’ experiences of being able to help patients and receiving something back through their nursing. The theme Importance of a functioning working team describes the nurses need for social support from their colleagues, and their strive for constant development as a person as well in the nursing profession in order to be motivated to keep nursing. Conclusion: Nurses find motivation to nurse by being able to help another person and receiving something meaningful through their care. Furthermore, nurses stressed the need for receiving support from their colleagues as well as having opportunity for personal and professional development to keep their motivation to nurse. Implementation of these motivational aspects in nursing care can therefore contribute to nurse’s wellbeing as well as for their retention in the nursing profession.

The Nurses act of balancing between closeness and distance : - A literary review

McEwan, Emily January 2012 (has links)
Background: Caring is the essence of nursing and it occurs in the encounter between nurse and patient. It is built on an intimate, friendship like relationship but it differs from an authentic friendship in as much as it is the nurse’s assignment to care for the patient. To truly care for the patient and at the same time uphold a professional distance is difficult and nurses can become over-involved that can lead to burn outs. How to avoid over-involvement, without losing caring, is not as yet undisputed. The act of balancing between closeness and distance is thus complicated. Aim: To describe how nurses deal with the act of balancing between closeness and distance in caring. Method: A qualitative literary review of ten scientific articles analyzed with inspiration from content analysis. Findings: Three themes emerged with associated sub themes; Internal conditions; to build on knowledge, to choose your own path and to accept the situation, Setting limits; to protect the self and to switch between roles and External conditions; to have access to support, to have the time to care, to have regard for context and that the patient determines the level. Conclusion: Good balance is not something static where one truth serves all. Nurses learn, through experience and self-knowledge where to draw their personal line regarding emotional involvement. The nurse who is willing and prepared for the emotional investment that comes with the job is more likely to endure it. Clinical meaning: This study increases understanding of the act of balancing between closeness and distance that the nurse exercises in her or his work and underlines the need for effective tutoring as authentic caring is unavoidably an emotional investment for the nurse.

O'Reilly, Louise 04 1900 (has links)
Several nursing authors acknowledge the essential value of the caring relationship and its benefits for the rehabilitation clientele. In spite of this importance, the therapeutic benefits of the caring relationship for this clientele remain an unexamined area. Currently, no Quebec, Canadian or international scientific nursing study is concerned with understanding the experience to « be with » the person being cared for in a rehabilitation context, which is central to the caring relationship according to Watson. Inspired by Watson’s Human Caring philosophy, this study aims to investigate, by qualitative interviews with seventeen rehabilitation nurses, the meaning of the experience to « be with » the person being cared for, as well as their perception of the contribution of this experience to the person’s rehabilitation. Fifty one interviews, therefore three interviews for every research participant, were analyzed using the « phenomenological » method entitled « Relational Caring Inquiry » developed by Cara (1997). The process of participant recruitment involved the nursing management team of both rehabilitation centres targeted by the study. A variety of participants was favoured (e.g.: gender, educational level, shift worked, and patient care unit). The process of data analysis allowed the discovery of five eidos-themes. Among these eidos-themes, four refer to the meaning of the experience to « be with » the person cared for (first research question), namely: (a) the importance of humanistic values at the core of the care, (b) the investment of the nurse and the person cared for, (c) the reciprocal and relational care dimensions and finally, (d) the irreplaceable care experience of contextual complexity. In more detail, the first eidos-theme reveals the humanistic basis of the experience to « be with » the cared person. The second expresses the substantial implication of the nurse and the person cared for. The third eidos-theme clarifies the reciprocity and relational dimension as being central elements of the experience to « be with » the person cared for. The fourth eidos-theme documents fundamental and complex origins of this unique care experience, as well as the contextual conditions which facilitate and impede it. The fifth and last eidos-theme emerging from this study, « strengthening the mind-body-spirit harmony of the person cared for and the nurse », illustrates the participants’ perception regarding the therapeutic contribution of the experience to « be with » the person cared (second research question). This contribution meets the patient’s needs, optimizes the rehabilitation progress of the person cared for, promotes the level of well being of the person cared for and the nurse and finally, raises the inner growth of the people engaged in this extraordinary care experience. The recognition of these five eidos-themes supports the emergence of the universal essence of the phenomenon being studied which is entitled « the profound, therapeutic, and transformative human relationship ». The present study contributes, in an innovative way, to knowledge development, in particular by allowing a better understanding of the meaning of rehabilitation nurses’ experience to « be with » the patient, and advancing evidence-based results to be used as a guide for the development of nursing care in the context of rehabilitation. By determining the ontological meaning of this care experience, the present study makes it possible to specify the place of the phenomenon to « be with » the patient as being central to the caring theory. The results arising from the second research question contribute to the development of a body of knowledge. These evidence-based results will be used to guide the renewal of nursing practice in the context of rehabilitation. Moreover, by identifying the benefits of this care experience, the present study recognizes the element at the heart of transpersonal caring relationship, which contributes to mind-body-spirit harmony for both, the person cared for and the nurse. This study also proposes recommendations for education and research in nursing sciences.

Eriksson, Erika, Hallberg, Helena January 2009 (has links)
</p> / <p><strong>Background: </strong>Alzheimer´s disease changes the memory of the sufferer, this means that they become dependent of caring. Relatives do not often want to leave them, but rather become their natural caregivers in their home. This is experienced as security for the sufferer, because moving often disturbs a memory disorder. Regardless of whether it is natural care or professional care the caring relationship is important because it relieves suffering. <strong>Problem:</strong> Human beings affected by Alzheimer's, has difficulty expressing them verbally, which may prevent a caring relationship. This could contribute that their suffering will not alleviate. <strong>Aim: </strong>To illuminate how the caring relationship shapes in drama, when a relative becomes a natural caregiver to a person suffering from Alzheimer's disease. <strong>Method: </strong>A latent content analysis was used for analyzing the movie “En sång för Martin”. <strong>Results: </strong>The results are presented in four themes, “Like playing a game”, “I just want to help you”, “Solo though we are two” and “The most sacred promises”, to illuminate the aim. <strong>Conclusion: </strong>Both parts can in the caring relationships grow together and find a way out of suffering. Without the caring relationship presence they were left alone in their pain, fear and anxiety.</p>

Background: Alzheimer´s disease changes the memory of the sufferer, this means that they become dependent of caring. Method: A latent content analysis was used for analyzing the movie “En sång för Martin”. Results: The results are presented in four themes, “Like playing a game”, “I just want to help you”, “Solo though we are two” and “The most sacred promises”, to illuminate the aim. Conclusion: Both parts can in the caring relationships grow together and find a way out of suffering. Without the caring relationship presence they were left alone in their pain, fear and anxiety.
