Företeelsen Barnahus : En intervjustudie om ett svenskt exempel på en organisation för barnets bästa

Studien syftar till att studera samverkan på Barnahus och om det någon gång kan krocka mellan de olika professionerna. Om så är fallet, vill vi författare se ifall det kan uppstå några konsekvenser för barnet. Empirin har samlats in genom fem kvalitativa intervjuer med professionella på det utvalda Barnahuset. Av informanterna var tre socialsekreterare, en polis och en åklagare. Materialet har transkriberats för att sedan analyseras utifrån en tematisk analys. Detta resulterade i fyra teman: Barnets bästa i fokus, Samverkan på Barnahus, Svårigheter på Barnahus och Påfrestningar för barnet. Resultatet har sedan tolkats, analyserats och diskuterats utifrån den valda teoretiska utgångspunkten nyinstitutionell teori. Studien visar att de professionella upplever samverkan som väl fungerande men att de ibland kan krocka i arbetet då de har olika arbetsuppgifter. Vissa av dessa krockar kan leda till påfrestningar för barnet, en av dessa påfrestningar är att barnet skuldbeläggs. / This bachelor thesis in social work aims to study the interaction between the different professionals and organisations in the swedish version of Childrens Advocacy Centers, Barnahus, and if it ever can clash between the different professions. If so, we authors would like to see if there could be any consequenses for the child. The empirical data were collected through five qualitative interviews with different professionals at the chosen Children Advocacy Center. Three of our informants were social workers, one worked as a police officer and the fifth informant worked as a prosecutor. We transcribed the material we recieved to analyze it based on a thematic analysis. We created four different themes based on the result we got: Focus on the childs best, interaction on Childrens Advocacy Center, Difficulties on Childrens Advocacy Center and Strain of the child. The result was later on interpreted and analyzed and discussed from a chosen theoretical point of view; institutional theory. This study shows that the professionals experience interaction as well functioning, but sometimes they collide at work when they have different tasks. Some of these crashes can cause problems for the child, one of these strains is that the child is blamed.

Influence of Parental Income and Educational Attainment on Children’s Years of Schooling : Case of Ghana

It has been widely acknowledged that high socioeconomic status provides better living conditions and vice versa. This study examines the impact of parents’ income and educational attainment on their children’s years of schooling in Ghana by utilizing the Ghana Living Standards Survey 2012/2013 which provides detailed information on respondents at the household level. Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive association between parental income, father’s and mother’s educational attainment with the child’s years of schooling. The positive correlation was further confirmed through multiple regression analysis which revealed a significant relationship between parental educational level and child’s years of schooling. It was observed that father’s educational attainment is a stronger predictor of a child’s years of schooling at the basic level compared to mothers. At the secondary and higher educational levels, both parents’ educational attainments are significant with father’s being the stronger predictor of male child years of schooling and mother’s for females. The resources of parents also influence the years of schooling of the children. Household size and place of residence were also shown to have significant influences on years of schooling. Larger household size meant shorter years of schooling for the child and smaller household size meant longer years of schooling, all things being equal. Children living in the rural areas have less years of schooling compared to children residing in urban areas. We conclude that parents’ educational and income levels are factors that determine the unequal opportunities among children as these resources are transferred from parents to children.

The purpose of this study is to investigate young children’s possibility to participation and influence in preschool settings. The specific questions were:  If and how do preschool teachers work with young children's influence and participation? In what way is the preschool teachers approach closely related to young children's opportunity to influence and participate? The results show that preschool teachers do work with young children’s influence and participation by keeping them involved in the preschool settings and considering their interest when planning the activities. The teachers also interpret the children’s ability to express their wishes and needs through nonvocal communication such as gestures and body language. The teacher's approach was shown as closely connected to the children opportunity to influence and participate in consideration to how close the teacher was to the child’s perspective and how they viewed the child. In summary this study concludes that the children’s ability to exert influence and participation will increase by endeavouring to come close to the child’s perspective and balancing the routines of the preschool settings as well as taking the child’s individuality into consideration.

The aim of this study is to examine how substance abuse and mental illnesses are portrayed in children’s literature from a child’s perspective. To achieve the aim, text analyses were performed on four selected works of children’s literature. The question asked is: in what way can the selected books function to support pupils in problematic family circumstances? The scientific approach of the study is hermeneutic. Hermeneutics means the theory of interpretation and concerns the creation of meaning and understanding through interpretations of texts. The analyses proceed from a hermeneutic model. The model shows how different components go together in the interpretation of a text. In the analyses the children’s literature is set in relation to the background chapter, which shows what the reality is like. The discussion considers the analyses in greater depth with the aid of the theory in order to investigate how readers with similar experiences can perceive and be affected by literature. We chose to design the study in this way because it reflects the hermeneutics. The results of the study show that the selected literature can affect the reader. The theory shows that people have a tendency to recognize themselves in literature and see their own problems at a distance, which helps the reader in real life. Through the literature the reader’s conceptual world can be expanded by new insights into their surroundings. The conclusions drawn in the study are that it is important to work with the Convention on the Rights of the Child in school, to explain to children that adults are not always in good health, and that children have a right to be children.

Barn i skuggan av barnperspektivet : En studie om syskons inkludering vid insatser till familjer där barn har en funktionsnedsättning

Science has shown that siblings to children with a disability are affected by the family situation. The siblings often let their own needs and requests come secondary to their family members. This study illustrates how different professionals, who keep in contact with families with a disabled child, works with its siblings. The purpose with this study was to see how professionals, working as administrators, counselors at the habilitation and kin supporters in the region of Kalmar, include siblings while working with the families. Representatives from the professionals have been interviewed with a semi structured interview manual. The result showed that professionals have various opinions how siblings are affected by the family situation. Mutually, none of the professionals meet the siblings to listen to their view, instead they listen to the parents for information. The children´s convention is therefore not lived up to by the organizations. Our result shows an absence of a child´s perspective in the professionals work with siblings to children with a disability.

Domestic Violence: The Adolescents' Perspectives on the Barriers and the Facilitators of Social Intervention : A Systematic Literature Review

Domestic violence is often experienced as a crisis period, and it may impact children’s well-being, everyday functioning and development. To promote these minors’ resilience, social intervention is extremely important. The support and responses attributed to these children are not always adequate for their needs and interests. Considering children’s perspectives on social intervention is crucial to improve and to provide complete social work responses. A systematic literature review was conducted, aiming to analyze how children exposed to domestic violence characterize the barriers and facilitators of social intervention. Through two databases, 8 articles were found, related to adolescents’ perspectives on social intervention in situations of domestic violence. The participants were children aged 12-18 years, who were witnesses of violence between parents or who suffered abuses from one/both parent(s). Findings demonstrated the main factors of social intervention that children recognized as being negative and unhelpful (barriers), and as being positive and helpful (facilitators). The identified barriers were lateness, mistrust, lack of child perspective, passivity, lack of value, malice, boredom, and inaccessibility. On the other hand, the established facilitators were protection, trust, child perspective, active listening, value, accessibility, sympathy, sharing, and information. Implications for social workers are provided, centered on specialized trainings and guidance, and on the use of appropriate methods when intervening with children. Also, the necessity to expand the quantity of research related to the child’s perspective on social intervention is highlighted.

”Vad som är bäst för barnet ska vara avgörande” : En kvalitativ studie om hur barnets bästa konstrueras i LVU-domar 1985-2015 / ”What´s best for the child shall be decisive”

Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur barnets bästa konstrueras i LVU-domar 2 § i Sverigeunder tidsperioden 1985-2015. Studien utgår från en socialkonstruktionistisk grund där endiskursanalys har genomförts på det insamlade materialet. I analysen har Laclau och Mouffesmaktbegrepp och diskursteori nyttjats i syfte att förstå hur barnets bästa konstrueras. Resultatenvisar att det förekommer varierande konstruktioner av barnets bästa under den studeradeperioden, där det i de tidiga årtiondena fokuseras på en skyddsaspekt och utvecklas i de senareårtiondena till att inkludera barnets behov i en bredare aspekt. Resultatet visar även attkonstruktionen av barnets bästa i relation till föräldrar skiftat under den studerade perioden, dåföräldrarnas intresse minskar till förmån för barnens ju närmare nutid studien sträcker sig.Avslutningsvis framkommer det att barnets bästa går från att vara implicit i de tidigare domarna,till att vara explicit i de senare domarna. Studien bedöms vara relevant för professionerinvolverade i LVU-processen, utifrån att förstå hur förändringarna av barnets bästa påverkas avdess aktuella kontext. Att belysa varierande konstruktioner av barnets bästa kan även belysabehovet av en mer enhetlig syn gällande innebörden av begreppet – framförallt utifrån etträttssäkerhetsperspektiv. / The objective of this study is to examine how the best interest of children is constructed in LVUrulings 2 § in Sweden during the period 1985-2015. The study builds from a foundation ofsocial constructionism, where a discourse analysis was implemented on the collected materials.In the analysis, Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory and idea of power have been used tounderstand the construction of the best interest of the child. The results show that there aredifferent constructions of the child´s best interest during the examined period; in the earlydecades there were focus on the protection of the child, while in the latter years the constructionincluded more areas of the child´s best interest. The study also shows that the construction ofthe child in relation to their caregivers developed in the latter years. In the early years thecaregivers were constructed as a big part of the child´s best interest, a construction thatdecreased in the latter years. It also emerges that the best interest of the child goes from assumedto defined, as we proceed through the period. The study is estimated to be relevant toprofessionals involved in the LVU-process, to aid their understanding of how the narrative isinfluenced by the current societal context. The identification of the varied constructions in therulings, demonstrate the need of a more standardized view of the concept.

Street children and accessing universal basic education: A case study of Enugu State, Nigeria.

Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / The phenomenon of street children presents a global challenge as it continues to increase and affects almost every nation. Nigeria is no exception, with an ever-increasing population of street children, with many of them as a result of insurgence attacks in various states in Nigeria. The Nigerian government acknowledges that education is a key to development and a great tool in changing the dynamics of street children. It further recognises education as a right and not a privilege, especially with Nigeria’s adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the passage into law of the Child’s Right Act of 2003. The importance of basic education, which serves as the foundation of the education system, cannot be over-emphasised, particularly since the government made free basic education one of the core mandates of the Universal Basic Education Board. However, the continuous loitering of children during school hours has led to questions being asked about the implementation of the free basic education programme. Using Enugu State as a case study, and applying the right-based approach, this study sought to find answers to why street children might not be accessing the free basic education. The phenomenon of street children not accessing this education, is contributing to their ever-growing numbers in the streets of Nigeria. This is a qualitative study that was conducted in Enugu, Nigeria. It used the purposive sampling technique, targeting children living on the streets, as well as policy makers, programme officers of the Universal Basic Education Board, administrative heads of basic education schools, nongovernmental organisations (NGOs), and community-based organisations (CBOs) working in areas relating to street children. The study used qualitative data collection methods comprising of focus group discussion and in-depth interviews. The data collected was analysed using NVIVO Qualitative Research Software. The study sought to identify the challenges and make recommendations to relevant stakeholders, to improve policy implementation, and to present specific recommendations to ensure better access for street children and other vulnerable groups to benefit from policies such as the Universal Basic Education policy. It is discovered that many street children will love to go to school but other factors such as poverty, poor implementation of the free education policy among others have kept these children out of school. These children aspire to be teachers, doctors, accountants, lawyers and business administrators and wish they can be sponsored or given free education.

The child perspective is a complex area primarily because of its many ways of interpretation but also because children are considered to be less competent than adults. Our hypothesis was that adults in court-proceedings make decisions in the child’s place. The aim of this study was to investigate the judicial meaning of the child perspective in “Socialtjänstlagen” (SoL) and “lag om särskilda bestämmelser om vård av unga” (LVU). The purpose was also to explore how the child perspective was presented in rulings from the Public Court according to LVU 3§, in the prerequisite “annat socialt nedbrytande beteende”. The choice of method was based on our main purpose and therefore the legal dogmatic and the qualitative methods were applied. The child perspective in Swedish legislation emphasizes the child’s best interest and the child’s right to be heard. There have been problems recognizing children’s legitimate interests which are one of the reasons why adults are considered to protect those interests by speaking for the child although they may have different interests. The result was that the child’s voice was inadequately asserted in legal processes which indicated that the child perspective wasn’t used as intended according to the law and government bill.
