Is Early L2 Reading of Children’s Literature a Good Idea? : How the attitudes to reading English children’s literature affect book access and teacher-library collaboration in two Swedish primary schools / Är tidig läsning av barnlitteratur en bra idé i engelskundervisningen?

Oldby, Jennifer, Rushworth, Elin January 2021 (has links)
This case study investigates how teachers’ and school librarians’ attitudes towards L2 reading in years 1-4, as well as their perceived book access and teacher-library collaboration, influence the use and reading of English children’s literature in two Swedish primary schools. This study is motivated by the importance the English language has in Sweden for higher education, the previous research proving powerful language benefits of extensive L2 reading, as well as the recent proposition to strengthen the school library’s role in Sweden. The data collected through qualitative, semi-structured interviews suggests that the participants’ attitudes affect book access, teacher-library collaboration and finally the pupils’ reading of English children’s literature at school. The results show that a confident and positive attitude towards early L2 reading appears to result in more reading, whereas more hesitant attitudes result in less reading. Despite the positive attitudes towards L2 reading in general, most teachers still displayed ambivalent attitudes toward dedicating ample class time to the reading of English children’s literature in the earliest years, often perceiving such reading as too difficult for their pupils. This ambivalence negatively affects the teacher-library collaboration, the inadequate access to physical books catering for the youngest pupils, as well as these learners’ early exposure to English reading. The results indicate that the interpretative nature of the English syllabus has teachers perceive the urgency of reading English children’s literature differently, consequently resulting in different reading practices. In a macro perspective, an unwelcome consequence for Swedish pupils may be an unequal reading preparation for the increasing English demands ahead.

Littératures pour la Jeunesse et photographie, mise à jour et étude analytique d’un corpus éditorial européen et américain, des années 1860 à aujourd'hui / Children’s literature and photography, overview and analytical study of a European and American corpus of work published from 1860 to the present day

Le Guen, Laurence 14 May 2019 (has links)
Literature for the young is often illustrated by drawings, but what happens when the illustrations are photographs? Only recently has the corpus of photographically-illustrated children’s literature begun to be examined. It is proving to be much more extensive than had previously been imagined, and necessitates a study from several different angles. The aim of this thesis is to highlight the close links between children’s books and photographic illustration and to measure the implications of the relationship between these two arts (considered ‘minor’ from a broad historical or geographical perspective) Covering European and North American literature from 1860 to the present day this thesis shows that photoliterary production for children is in fact a publishing genre in its own right, although today many such productions are still filed under the label “Picturebooks” or in French, “Littérature de jeunesse” [children’s literature]. By invoking the field of photoliterature, this study brings to light the layout of various phototextual devices and examines how text and photographs combine to create meaning for a young reader. It also retraces the relations between certain pedagogical theories and the critical reception of these works, revealing the manner in which both are inextricably bound up with particular publishing decisions.

Exploring children's literature in the Spanish Foreign Language classroom : A study about the presence and use of children's literature when teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

Kooijman, Rebecca January 2022 (has links)
This essay aims to further investigate the role of children’s literature when teaching Spanish as a foreign language. Aside from examining if and how it is used, the study focuses on the reasons behind why teachers choose to include children’s literature in the classroom. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, there is reason to explore varieties of literature (Council of Europe, 2002). In addition, the possibilities of integrating intercultural aspects into the Spanish classroom through teaching literature are considered. Aiming to explore how Spanish teachers view and integrate literature and children’s literature in their teaching, a virtual survey was published in online groups for Spanish teachers around the world. In total, 24 teachers of varying ages, studies and experiences with literature participated in the survey.  The findings indicate that children’s literature is present in some way when teaching Spanish, contrary to one of the hypotheses. Moreover, most of the teachers use children’s literature to teach reading comprehension and elements of language, such as grammar and vocabulary. Lastly, the results show that most teachers consider intercultural aspects and students’ personal development when using children’s literature in the classroom, confirming our final hypothesis. It is concluded that while the study analyses data on an international level, the findings may also be of value for teachers in a Swedish school context.

Lembke, Jasmin 04 1900 (has links)
This Master thesis explores the relationship between the reeditions of picture books from the German Democratic Republic (Bode 2002, Richter 2016) and “Ostalgie” (Ahbe 2001/ 2013/2017/2018; Boyer 2006; Haage 2013), a unique and continually evolving brand of collective memory specific to the GDR. Analyzing the paratexts (Genette 2001) of the series Kindergeschichten der DDR (Beltz/KinderbuchVerlag; since 2009), we could distinguish the affected commemorative groups, determine in which way the reeditions refer to the collective memory of East Germany, and show in which way this memory influences the reeditions. With this contribution, the author hopes to enhance the field of research on German children’s literature.

Ingen äger skogen : Människa och natur i Astrid Lindgrens Bröderna Lejonhjärta och Ronja Rövardotter / Nobody Owns the Forest : Human and Nature in Bröderna Lejonhjärta and Ronja Rövardotter, by Astird Lindgren

Nordgren, Sarah January 2018 (has links)
This essay aim to explore how human and nature is presented in Bröderna Lejonhjärta and Ronja Rövardotter, by Astrid Lindgren. It also tries to answer the question how the relationship between the two is shaped; can any hierarchic structures be exposed in the relationship, and how do these, in that case, appear? The essay also problematize words and concepts along the way, such as nature, anthropocentrism and ecocentrism. The method for this study is an ecocritical theoretical base, with thematic analyzes of the books, regarding plot, relationships between characters and their surroundings, and also linguistic narratological techniques, such as the use of metaphorical elements. The different thematic episodes are put in relation to theories about vital materialism, presented in Vibrant Matter – A Political Ecology of Things, by Jane Bennett. I also do a comparative analysis between the two books by Lindgren, with the purpose of highlighting important differences and similarities. The essay ends by discussing how the main characters can be seen as very caring in their relationship to their surroundings, and how one, by applying the theories presented by Bennett, can interpret this caring as a strive towards existing in harmony with, and equal to, nature; a sort of mode or view that Bennett describes as a horizontal position. During the discussion I describe how this strive and position is expressed, and how these are interacting with cyclical systems such as the changes of the seasons and shift between life and death. The books as literature for children, and the main characters as children, is discussed in relation to this, supported by the text “När du är bättre än vi – Jantelagen, skammen och barnlitteraturen” by Maria Jönsson, from the book Du ska inte tro att du är något – Om Jantelagens aktualitet.

Harry Potter and value-based work in the English language classroom for year 4-6 : An analysis of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Thelin, Erika January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to highlight the possibilities that Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone can contribute to in the value-based work in teaching, as well as how the content can be used as a tool in teaching. This is with the hope that it will lead to an increased understanding and interest among teachers in how children’s and youth literature and value-based work can be combined. The study is a qualitative literature analysis based on Nikolajeva’s (2017) narratological literature analysis model. In the selection of literature, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2014) was chosen, which was the Harry Potter novel that was easiest for the author to access. The study’s analysis highlights three different subcategories: social responsibility, inclusion and exclusion, and laws and regulations. The result of the analysis shows that the book contains several events that can be related to the basic values in the value base. Among other things, various scenarios emerge that students can relate to such things as exclusion, social community, and dilemmas. The study also shows that some rule violations can be related to what is morally right. The content of the book can contribute to the value-based work in teaching through the various events, which can be linked to students’ identifying with the story and which similarities and differences exist between the world in the novel and the real one. The content of the book can also be sued as a pedagogical tool, in that its content can capture students’ interest, which can lead to an increase in motivation. Important conclusions from this study are that Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone can be useful for value-based work, and also children’s and youth literature in general can be useful in teaching.

VOCI E IMMAGINI DI GIANNI RODARI IN TRADUZIONE INGLESE / IMAGES AND VOICES OF GIANNI RODARI IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION

ALBORGHETTI, CLAUDIA 17 March 2016 (has links)
The research investigates the extent to which Gianni Rodari’s (1920-1980) works changed in their English translations through the mediating presence of publishers, reviewers, and especially translators between the 1960s and 2011. With reference to the cultural context of production of translated works (Bassnett & Lefevere, 1998; Chesterman et al., 2000), translational patterns of children’s literature were firstly studied from a retrospective point of view (Toury, 2012) to contextualise Rodari’s books in English in the UK and the US. Secondly, the intervention of translators in four of these books was analysed within the mediation framework provided by S-Universals in translation (Chesterman, 2004). The discrete analysis of the translations by Patrick Creagh (1965, 1971), Jack Zipes and Antony Shugaar (2008, 2011 respectively), based on the nine translational trajections identified by J. L. Malone (1988), showed that the translators adopted different foreignising and domesticating strategies (Venuti, 1995) according to the intended public. More specifically, domesticating strategies presented a high degree of creativity in line with Rodari’s original narrative purpose, whereas Shugaar’s foreignising translation (2011) retained references to the Italian culture as in Rodari’s source text, marking a shift of audience from children to adults, from the Italian to the English target text.

Translating humour in children's literature: Dahl as a case study

Verster, Helene 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This study focuses on the strategies and devices used to create humour in children’s literature. No language is a replica of another language and it is generally accepted that a translator has to be creative in order to make the Source Text (ST) meaning available to the Target Text (TT) reader. The research conducted in this study aims to fill a gap regarding the application of humour in the rather under-researched field of children’s literature. A descriptive framework was used to conduct this qualitative study in order to be able to describe the linguistic strategies and devices used to translate the English source text by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator into the Afrikaans Target Text, Charlie en die Groot Glashyser by Kobus Geldenhuys. Literary devices to create humour, employed by both the writer and the translator, were identified and analysed. Interviews and reading sessions with ST learners (English) as well as TT learners (Afrikaans) were conducted in order to observe their non-verbal reactions as well as document their verbal comments to complement the data obtained from the textual analysis. The textual analysis showed that the literary device most frequently applied in the ST was the simile and the main trend regarding the transference of humorous devices to the TT was to retain the device with formal equivalence. The most popular translation strategy was direct translation with the most important shifts identified on morphological and lexical level and shifts in expressive and evoked meaning were relatively low. With regard to the reading sessions, the most positive results from both groups of learners regarding humorous devices in the ST and TT were obtained for the device of inappropriate behaviour. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Linguistics)

: A study about gender and how girls are portrayed in children’s literature

Olsson, Caroline January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this survey is to see how girls are portrayed in children’s literature from a gender perspective. The analysis is based on different specific features with the characters such as looks, stereotypical behaviour and interplay with other characters. The starting point of this analysis are the four children’s books Lisbet och Sambakungen by Emma Karinsdotter and Hanna Gustavsson, Nelly Rapp och de små under jorden by Martin Widmark and Christina Alvner, Hedvig och Hardemos prinsessa by Frida Nilsson and Dårfinkar och Dönickar by Ulf Stark. These four children’s books are in different ways norm breaking and are prominent within the school's activities. The study is based on how gender and equality looks in our society today. The analysis will also investigate girls’ and boys’ behaviour based on common stereotypical features. The results demonstrate that the children’s books are in different ways norm breaking and that girls are portrayed in varying ways. The results have also shown that a good working method for working with gender in teaching is reading aloud following with book discussions.
