Les références culturelles dans les titres d'article de la presse russe contemporaine / Cultural references in articles titles in the contemporary russian press

Chotova, Elena 12 December 2014 (has links)
The subject of our research work is the study of the quotations phenomena that appear in the articles titles of the contemporary russian press. These quotations refer to source texts belonging to different categories of the culture : literary works, political works, songs, movies,... Our research work is based on the analysis of articles published in 25 russian newspapers and magazines, mainly on the period 2002-2004. These newspapers and magazines address a wide public, with prints up to 3 millions. We demonstrate in our work that the quotations that may be found in the article titles are "krylatye slova" (winged words, that is to say usual quotations). This phenomena exist as such in russian and german linguistics but has not been studied until now as a specific phenomena in french linguistics. The usage of winged words, quotations widely known by the general public at a given period of time in a specific country, is a sign of national identification for the speakers, as these quotations refer to cultural knowledge they could acquire only through a common education and exposure to life in the same country. Our work gives an overview of the common cultural references of the contemporary russian people, and proposes a tool, accessible to everybody, to discover these references, actualized at a specific period of time.

Nasr, Maria 15 June 2010 (has links)
This thesis is a scientometric study on 542 texts about translation didactics published between 1966 and 2009. The purpose is to investigate what authors have influenced this field and what texts, languages, types of media and disciplines are the most cited. Most cited authors are translation scholars who are not specialized in translation didactics. The functionalist and linguistic approach of translation are the most cited trends among the most cited authors. These authors are mostly cited for their theories and their teaching methods. Citing texts show the influence of European institutions, since most cited authors are affiliated in European countries. French authors are practically only cited by authors affiliated in French-speaking countries and the most influential German-speaking authors are cited by authors from various countries. The majority of most cited texts are monographs on translation studies published in the nineties by teachers and translators. The most cited texts between 1966 and 2005 deal with translation studies research (non-didactic texts) and the most cited texts between 2006 and 2009 are didactic texts on non-literary translation. Papers in collective books and journals are less cited than monographs. Authors also cite more ‘old’ texts than ‘recent’ texts (released more or less than five years after the publication of the citing text). Most cited texts are written in English and texts on translation studies (non-didactic texts) are a lot more cited than texts from other disciplines.

L'intertextualité comme source de création littéraire : essai sur le roman arabe contemporain / Intertextuality as the source of literary creation : an essay on the contemporary Arabic novel

Guessoum, Zeineb 16 June 2016 (has links)
In the field of contemporary Arabic literature, the theme of intertextuality as the source of novelistic literary creation possesses a double origin. On the one hand, the study of major contemporary Arabic novelists shows that they make use of prior narratives of essentially epic, historical and religious character, reproducing them in a romantic style and context that is entirely their own, but without departing from the original theme. On the other, intertextuality as the source of literary creation takes for its foundation the role played by memory and knowledge. In order to grasp the way in which these two sources are used and why, we are going to approach the question by analyzing university studies and current literary criticism on the subject, thereby constructing an objective argument. Then we will structure our work in three parts. The first will be entitled: “Quotations and References”, a juxtaposition posing the question of the relationship between the intertextual quotation and the reader. The second part will be entitled: “Allusions and Evocations”. This pair of terms will be concerned with the relationship between intertextuality and memory (both historical and cultural), which is contained in the literature. Finally, the third part will be called: “Resumptions and Reorganisations” – these two terms raising the question of textual resumption and the divergent relationship existing between texts.

Three essays on knowledge diffusion and firms' economic performance

Aldieri, Luigi 14 September 2011 (has links)
In this research, our main goal rests in the analysis of the main determinants and the features of output performance of firms. First, we will investigate the direct and the indirect effects (spillovers) of Research and Development (R&D) investments on firms’ total factor productivity growth. To that end, we begin by estimating the returns to R&D by using international micro level data, as first proposed in Griliches (1979). We quantify the effects on firms’ productivity of exogenous variations in the state of technology and of the R&D of other firms (R&D spillovers, Jaffe, 1986). Second, we will try to take into account the firms’ ability to identify, assimilate and exploit existing information, that is their absorptive capacity (Cohen, Levinthal 1989). We assume that the elasticity of output (or value added) to national or foreign stock of spillovers depend on the chosen measure of Absorptive Capacity, which generally is represented by own R&D capital. The positive effect of the interaction between own R&D capital and the spillover pool term indicates the firm ability to absorb new ideas from outside, while its negative effect gives evidence of necessity to invest more in own R&D. Third, we will explore the question whether geographic and technological proximities affect the knowledge flows, proxied by patent citations for large international firms and how these effects change over time. We expect that the geographical proximity impact on knowledge flows is decreasing over time, since information travels at lower communication costs over time (Coyle, 1997 and Friedman, 2005). Yet, according to Evans and Harringan (2005), distance is still relevant in some technological sectors, where face-to-face interaction is fundamental and knowledge is tacit and hard to codify. Then, it is also interesting to analyse the impact of technological proximity on knowledge flows over time.

Students See, Students Do?: Inducing a Peer Norm Effect for Oral Source Citations

Buerkle, C. Wesley, Gearhart, Christopher C. 03 April 2017 (has links)
Video modeling was used to establish descriptive norms for proper oral citation performance in a general education public speaking class (N = 191). Three conditions—a control, a peer model video, and a nonpeer model video—were compared for influence on proper citation usage and completeness. Results indicated that students viewing any video performed more complete citations than students not viewing a video. Results were mixed when comparing the effects of the peer model video against the nonpeer model video. Findings suggest norms for proper oral citation behavior can be established through modeling videos.

Impetuses for First, Second, and Third Year Law Student Information Seeking Behavior, and Perception of Common Knowledge and Citation

Helge, Kris 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examined how previous information literacy training, law student gender, age, and previously obtained education affects first, second, and third year law students selection of information sources, their understanding of common knowledge, and their decision of whether or not to give attribution to these sources. To examine these factors, this study implemented a paradigm called the principle of least effort that contended humans in general tended to complete the least amount of work possible to complete presented tasks. This study sought to discover whether law students follow this same path of completing the least amount of work possible to finish presented tasks, and whether this behavior affects information source selection, citation, and understanding of common knowledge. I performed six focus groups and crafted and disseminated an online survey to examine these factors. Via this data collection, it was discovered that law students do exhibit some differences in understanding of citation and citation behavior based on age and their year in law school. They also exhibited some differences regarding common knowledge based on their year in law school, where they received their information literacy training, and where they attend law school. Yet, no statistically significant differences were discovered regarding where one attends law school and citation and source selection. Further this study revealed law students do follow this paradigm and seek the path of least resistance to accomplish law school assignments.

Research on recommender systems : A bibliometric study

Ballesteros Carretero, Maria Nelida January 2021 (has links)
A recommender system is a subclass of information filtering system that seeks to predict the "rating" or "preference" a user would give to an item. These systems are present in a wide variety of applications and websites today. We can be aware of these recommendations when we are buying and articles similar to those we are looking for are suggested to us. However, they act in many other activities, such as in applications about restaurants and vacation trips. They also filter information from multimedia collections, such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. And furthermore, they are also present in browsers and they filter papers and books from repositories. They are subject to continuous research and improvement and the study of how these systems are being examined and evolve today is important because they literally filter the available information for us. This bibliometric study analyses the present-day research front on recommender systems. The chosen data source is the Web of Science bibliographic database and the study is performed following quantitative methods, using bibliometric techniques together with a qualitative assessment and interpretation of the most relevant research articles.

FIRM INNOVATION AND RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT COSTS UNDER IFRS

zhang, chunnan, 0000-0001-6997-8646 January 2022 (has links)
This paper examines the relationship between research and development (R&D) expenditures under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and firms’ innovation, proxied by future patent counts and patent citations. Accounting for R&D is a major difference between IFRS and generally accepted accounting principles in the United States (US GAAP). The difference is that certain development costs can be treated as assets under IFRS, but all R&D expenditures are expensed under US GAAP. This difference in the accounting treatment is grounded in the conceptual question of whether R&D expenditures provide future benefits, consistent with the definition of an asset, or whether the benefits are so uncertain that they are treated as the consumption of resources, consistent with the definition of an expense. If R&D expenditures provide future benefits, they are expected to be associated with future patents and citations. Capitalized development costs should exhibit a stronger association as they meet the criteria to be assets, expecting to provide future benefits. Expensed R&D can also be associated with patents and patent citations as these expenditures may also lead to patents and patent citations. As expensed R&D relates to expenditures in the research stage or those development costs that do not meet the criteria to be capitalized, the association should be weaker. Therefore, this paper examines the association between R&D expenditures that are expensed and those that are capitalized under IFRS with patents and patent citations as future benefits.Using a hand-collected sample of high-tech firms in European Union from 2012 to 2018, this paper finds economically and statistically significant different associations between capitalized development costs and expensed R&D and a firms’ innovation, as proxied by future patents and patent citations. Using median effects, the association between one million euros investment in firms’ capitalized development costs and patent counts (citations) is 200% or more than the association between one million euro’s expensed R&D and patent counts (citations). This paper is one of the first to examine the relationship between R&D capitalization under IFRS and firms’ innovation, as measured by future patent counts and patent citations. This paper contributes to the literature on R&D capitalization by identifying the fundamental difference in the association between capitalized development costs and expensed R&D and innovation. Further, this paper contributes to our understanding of the accounting for R&D, and the different treatment between US GAAP and IFRS by finding that capitalized development costs display a different association from expensed R&D. / Business Administration/Accounting

Utilisation of reference management software by postgraduate students in the faculty of humanities at the University of Limpopo, South Africa

Motlhake, Thondo Morotola Johanna January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Information Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The study investigated the awareness towards the and utilisation of Reference Management Software (RMS) by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo, South Africa. The aim of the study was to examine the awareness and usage of RMS among postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities. The study sought to fulfil the following objectives, namely: to describe the types of RMS available for use in university libraries; to determine awareness of RMS by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo; to measure the extent to which postgraduate students in this faculty use RMS when writing academic papers; to identify the purposes for which the postgraduate students use RMS; and to identify postgraduate students’ perceptions regarding the use of RMS Quantitative research orientation though a survey research design were adopted in the study. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 320 respondents and a total number of 244 questionnaires were returned and a response rate of 76% was achieved. The findings of the study show that most of the respondents (59%) were aware of the RMS. Most of the postgraduate students became familiar with the software through attending library training. However, the study found that the usage of RMS was low as 45% postgraduate students indicated that they have used RMS before whilst, 55% indicated that they have never used the RMS before. RefWorks remains the most popular used software among postgraduate students. Most of the respondents’ reason for using RMS amongst others was because they have received training, and some mentioned the fact that it was the only RMS they were familiar with. The study also found that the respondents use RMS to cite sources for assignments, research and papers, as well as to create reference list and collect and organise citations. The study revealed that the respondents like RMS because it assists and improves referencing. The study recommends for an intensified library training by academic librarians so that students should know advanced features of the RMS.

An annotated catalog of the literary quotations found in Emile Gallé’s works (writings and art)

De Coster, Camille 11 January 2013 (has links)
This research is dedicated to the works of Emile Gallé, leader of the Ecole de Nancy and an artist whose creations belong in Art Nouveau's major achievements. He was also very fond of literature and it is this aspect of his personality, which had a major impact on his works, that has been here focused on. This study is mostly based on Gallé's most tangible account of his interest for words : the many quotations he himself carved on his creations (in glass, wood or china) or referred to in his own writings. Their importance lies in the fact that they are truly part of his creative process since Gallé would sometimes create a piece after being enthralled by some literary passage he had read. This is the reason why it felt necessary to list exhaustively every quotation the artist chose to extract from 19th century literary works and present them as an annotated catalogue. This inventory is followed by a thematic classification highlighting the artist's favourite topics. The main themes here depicted are then discussed and confronted in the conclusion. The catalogue may be at the heart of this study but it also seemed inconceivable not to mention Emile Gallé's life so as to understand the main influences ruling his artistic and literary sensitivity. The first part of this research thus deliberately takes on a biographic aspect.
