Prioritizing cross-disciplinary competencies for thesis transferability: Piloting a research-based incubator for exploring transformative solutions

Gerner, Martin, Sonntag, Ralph, Sassen, Remmer 15 March 2022 (has links)
Anticipating the challenges of a sustainable future requires a set of specific competencies, often called future skills. They range from systems-thinking, anticipatory future-thinking, normative value-thinking, entrepreneurial and strategic thinking, data literacy to both intrapersonal and interpersonal qualities of collaborative, integrated problem-solving and implementation (cf. Kirchherr et al. 2019; Brundiers et al 2021; OECD 2021). Future oriented learning assignments have to address these competencies and adequate solutions have to be provided for acquiring them. In many cases, due to fixed structures of curricula and accreditation processes related approaches are perceived as limiting and bureaucratic in order to adequately correspond to the dynamic of future skills for transformative action. In fact, they have to be addressed now in order to unfold their full potential soon in the future.

Ethnographic Literary Journalism

Swasey, Christel Lane 16 July 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Leon Dash and Ted Conover have modeled an ethnographic approach to literary journalism. This approach combines literary journalism's compelling narrative techniques with ethnographic “naturalist-like” (Brewer, 2000) thoroughness and trustworthiness. Rosa Lee: A Mother in Urban America, by Leon Dash, and Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing, by Ted Conover, exemplify this painstaking method that skillfully uses the narrative craft, generates trustworthy data, and contributes to an academic body of knowledge as well as exposing findings to the general public. Dash, Conover, and others have demonstrated the synergy and problem-solving potential of merging anthropology with literary journalism, yet there is no typology, no common name and no set of ground rules describing this work. Identifying Dash's and Conover's methods may advance cross-pollination between anthropology and literary journalism, fields that share the role of reporting on contemporary culture. This cross-pollination serves both disciplines. Ethnography stands to increase its numbers of readers by enlisting the writing techniques of literary journalists and by publishing “more public-spirited” (Fillmore, 1987, p. 1) findings in more public venues. Literary journalism stands to be seen and applied as a credible form of qualitative science by enlisting trustworthy naturalistic methods and aiming to contribute to an academic body of knowledge. This thesis explores the promise of ethnographic naturalism in narrative form, as “scholarship for real readers” (S. Olsen, March 2, 2009, personal communication) by examining how practitioners meet rigorous naturalistic criteria for trustworthiness (Lincoln & Guba, 1985) and how they present findings in narrative forms and public venues. This exploration draws on personal interviews with Dash and Conover and analyses of their long-form narrative research texts in the context of other scholars' outlooks. Key findings include the discovery that although Dash and Conover were not consciously using naturalistic criteria for trustworthiness, their work meets these criteria. Another key finding is that while both writers consider themselves primarily journalists, they both have read anthropology extensively. A notable finding is the fact that Dash and Conover rely on time-invested “unfettered inquiry,” (Dash, 1996) the mind-set of insatiable curiosity, caring and the liberty to apply practices of other disciplines to conduct research, free from external controls.

Efficacité environnementale des documents locaux d'urbanisme : application aux bruits routiers dans les communes franciliennes et algéroises / Environmental efficiency of the local documents of town planning : application in the road noises in the municipalities of Ile-de-France and from Algiers

Abou Warda-Khazen, Maissoun 24 November 2008 (has links)
The emergence of the sustainable development, thanks to the recent innovations in French and Algerian laws, is integrated progressively into political views and actions. For French urban planning, the SRU law and its action plans (PLU and PADD) propose a new transversal approach, making coherence between urbanism and environment. For Algerian urban planning, the law n° 01-20 of town planning and sustainable development doesn’t totally change the POS but it brought about changes in them in order to follow the direction of the sustainable development and the participative democracy. The target of this work is to study the link between the noise and the urban planning through. The respective documents of town planning of every country (PLU in France and POS in Algeria). The main question is to examine the relevance of the new urbanistic capacities with regards to the reduction of the road noise and to estimate their actual implementation in terms of politics and local actions. Our cross-disciplinary view allows a deep and complete analysis of this environment and public politics. This approach requires interviews with political and technical staff. It also requires following the elaboration of the urban planning instruments in three cities of Ile-de-France (Fontenay-sous-Bois, Saint-Denis, Boulogne Billancourt) and one city in Algiers (El Mohammadia). The analysis could allow to highlight the different measures in the field of the road noise, and to identify impediments in order to shape a typology of best practices

應用整合行銷模式於跨業資源整合平台之建置-以新視紀整合行銷集團為例 / The application of integrated marketing communications in cross-disciplinary integrated platform–new vision integrated marketing communication co., ltd. as a case study

Weng, Ming Lung Unknown Date (has links)
The integrated marketing industry in Taiwan faces a low gross-profit challenge because the limited market share and its growth is highly relevant to the worldwide economy. Providing a creative service becomes a trend for the industry to respond those tough situations. Although the Taiwan government has been putting a lot of resources into the cultural and creative industry and President Ma Ying-Jeou announced that the year of Taiwan centenary (2011) is “Taiwan Design Year,” most of Taiwanese design companies could not cross through a marketing chasm successfully. Most creative products could not been accepted by mass consumers. Thus, this research seeks to explore the application of integrated marketing communications in cross-disciplinary and then analysis the feasibility of changing creative product developing processes with the integrated marketing communications model. This research uses the transaction cost theory and takes New Vision Integrated Marketing Communications Group and its subsidiary company, Unique Art Integrated Platform of Creative Products, as case study to evaluate the efficiency in creative product developing processes. This research concludes that “Unique Art Integrated Platform of Creative Products” which applied the integrated marketing communications model into the cultural and creative industry in Taiwan, indeed increased the possibility of developing creative products, decreased transaction costs in developing creative products, and shortened the whole developing process, from searching for a design to launching a product. Most importantly, consumers are beneficiaries, spend less money to buy creative products, because of this new business model.

Learning from Objects:How may Boundary Objects Enact Adaptive Learning in Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

Wang, Pei Hsun Unknown Date (has links)
Recently, more and more companies are gathering different types of specialist in order to solve increasingly complex problems. But the efforts paid in the process of cooperation are challenging for enterprises. Previous researchers had focused on the transfer and share of cross-disciplinary knowledge. However, they neglected the fact that some critical knowledge must be learned by collaborative exploring in terms of particular situation. To understand this issue, an ethnography study was used to examine the process of trouble shooting undertaken by engineers who encountered complex problems in the fabrication of semiconductor wafers. This thesis addressed three primary challenges faced by engineers. First, the nature of the problem may not be defined appropriately at the beginning. Second, responsibility may not be clearly attributed by cross specialist team who is in charge of investigation. Third, without comprehensive contexts of the practice, communication between engineers is problematic itself. To overcome the problem, engineers must be able to go beyond standard operating procedures so that they can find a new path of solution. This thesis argues that the use of boundary objects is an effective trigger of problem solving. The use of a boundary object is then described as a means of decoding the contexts behind the objects, reforming the relationship of cooperation, and integrating knowledge systemically. These findings suggest that theories of knowledge management and boundary objects could be improved organically by considering what people do and how people learn in practice. Furthermore, these findings bring us practical implications of employee training and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Visual media as a tool to acquire soft skills — cross-disciplinary teaching-learning project SUFUvet

Maurer, Patrick, Raida, Antonia Christine, Lücker, Ernst, Münster, Sander 15 May 2019 (has links)
Purpose – SUFUvet is a cross-disciplinary teaching-learning project designed to adapt students’ soft skills and track usability and the concrete surplus value of work techniques in the field of visual media design. Design/methodology/approach – For SUFUvet, a collaboration between the Institute of Food Hygiene/University of Leipzig and the Media Center/Technische Universität Dresden was initiated. Bachelor students of media informatics generate 3D visualisations in the framework of SCRUM: Undergraduate veterinary students issue instructions in order to create an e-learning class. During the project, questionnaires, group discussions, and feedback methods are used to detect changes in selected soft skills. Originality/value – This design is meant to increase knowledge and employability by adapting student’s media, communication, and project management competences. Using SCRUM appears to be a new approach, not only in the field of programming, but for media production as well. Additionally, it offers an interdisciplinary work environment, which is rare but considered fruitful within university studies. Practical implications – The outcomes of the application are a 3D-visualised meat inspection e-learning class for veterinary students plus a documentation of SCRUM as a framework for visual media design. It is seen as an experiment for future applications in a variety of cross-disciplinary learning and media design cases.
