Knowing mathematics for teaching: a case study of teacher responses to students' errors and difficulties in teaching equivalent fractions

Ding, Meixia 15 May 2009 (has links)
The goal of this study is to align teachers’ Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) with their classroom instruction. To reduce the classroom complexity while keeping the connection between teaching and learning, I focused on Teacher Responses to Student Errors and Difficulties (TRED) in teaching equivalent fractions with an eye on students’ cognitive gains as the assessment of teaching effects. This research used a qualitative paradigm. Classroom videos concerning equivalent fractions from six teachers were observed and triangulated with tests of teacher knowledge and personal interviews. The data collection and analysis went through a naturalistic inquiry process. The results indicated that great differences about TRED existed in different classrooms around six themes: two learning difficulties regarding critical prior knowledge; two common errors related to the learning goal, and two emergent topics concerning basic mathematical ideas. Each of these themes affected students’ cognitive gains. Teachers’ knowledge as reflected by teacher interviews, however, was not necessarily consistent with their classroom instruction. Among these six teachers, other than one teacher whose knowledge obviously lagged behind, the other five teachers demonstrated similar good understanding of equivalent fractions. With respect to the basic mathematical ideas, their knowledge and sensitivity showed differences. The teachers who understood equivalent fractions and also the basic mathematical ideas were able to teach for understanding. Based on these six teachers’ practitioner knowledge, a Mathematical Knowledge Package for Teaching (MKPT) concerning equivalent fractions was provided as a professional knowledge base. In addition, this study argued that only when teachers had knowledge bases with strong connections to mathematical foundations could they flexibly activate and transfer their knowledge (CCK and PCK) to their use of knowledge (SCK) in the teaching contexts. Therefore, further attention is called for in collaboratively cultivating teachers’ mathematical sensitivity.

Utomhuspedagogikens påverkan på barn med koncentrationssvårigheter : En intervjustudie ur förskollärarperspektiv / The outdoor education's impact on children with concentration difficulties : An interview study from pre-school teacher's perspective

Bergenholtz, Sanna, Wall, Fanny January 2009 (has links)
Children with concentration difficulties are to a great extent a problem in schools and therefore it becomes interesting to see how possibilities around these children can appear in pre-school. From a pre-school teacher’s perspective, the study aims to provide a deeper understanding of how outdoor education can influence children with concentration difficulties. The method of the study is a qualitative research run-up with interviews that intends to describe pre-school teachers’ views. What we applied for requires experience-based answers, and therefore, pre-school teachers with at least a couple of years experience of daily pre-school activity were selected. The result shows, among other things, how outdoor education is an important part of daily activities. Specific for children with concentration difficulties, outdoor education gives increased  possibilities for movement, fresh air and recovery. The concept of concentration difficulties is not used in pre-school in order to describe these children. In connection with outdoor education there should be rich variations of outdoor environment. In conclusion reflected outdoor environment that provides both free play and planned activities gives children with concentration difficulties possibilities to increase their power of concentration.

Floberg, Agneta, Löfström, Helene January 2010 (has links)
Abstrakt Studien behandlar begreppskunskap inom området positionssystemet hos elever i matematiksvårigheter. / Abstract The study deals with the conceptual knowledge in the positional system for pupils with mathematical difficulties. The investigation was conducted in grade four and includes natural numbers for the ten-base system. The study consists of a quantitative survey and a quality part with interviews. The result of the study has been organized into three areas which have importance to the development of mathematical concepts for individuals. The number field 1-10, rules for the building of system of numbers and the understanding of large numbers. The result shows that the understanding of a concept may be more superficial then it appears to be. Deficiency in basic conceptual understanding can lead to numeracy problems. The difficulties included the concepts place-value and magnitude of number, especially in large numbers.   Keywords: concept, mathematical difficulties, positional system, schema, special needs education, ten-base system.

Dahlström, Pia January 2007 (has links)
Abstract I have chosen to make a study of the learning of reading and writing, as well as other learning difficulties that may occur, in this research. My choice of subject is based on the realizations I made during my time as a student teacher; that each teacher has his/her own way of teaching reading and writing. Sometimes, however, learning difficulties occur, and this insight caught my attention. It made me think about the underlaying reasons and how we, as teachers, can bring attention to these difficulties. With these questions in mind, I recorded my observations based on a series of interviews and literary studies in an attempt to answer my questions. The resulting research emphasizes how important the actions from the teachers are, as well the importance of having variety in your lesson plan. As teachers, we have to give each pupil the time he or she needs, to ensure that they understand what is being taught. The achievement of this, will be a fun and pleasurable learning experience.

Jonsson Carlsson, Eva January 2008 (has links)
Many researches have been done about the difficulties in teaching children with disabilities and like in this case dyslexia, which is the disability my essay is focused on. Earlier researches have investigated how and what teachers do practically when they have pupils with dyslexia and what help they have in their work. I wanted to investigate how the theories in National Compulsory School Curriculum (Lpo94) and about inclusive education in relation to the actual work in one Swedish school. My essay, with help of other research, has taken the expression “school for all” and it’s meaning to what is possible to do in a real life work situation, with the assignments that schools have in Lpo94. The result from my research on this Swedish school in Stockholm region is that they have a somewhat impossible goal to achieve, if the School system wants to be a “school for all” and at the same time fulfil their obligations in Lpo94 about an inclusive education and at the same time notice and offer alternative education to the ordinary if necessary.

Frohm, Ida, Hedström, Tove, Baglien, Maria January 2008 (has links)
The Trappan Model is one of the most implemented treatment programs for children who have experienced domestic violence. This study undertakes a wider evaluation of the model through a pilot study. The approach is both quantitive and qualitative. Theory as well as the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire have been used to fulfil the aim. The design is pre-post. The respondents are thirteen children who have undergone Trappan treatment programs in Uppsala during 2007. Pre-tests and comparison groups have been used to ascertain the psychological, emotional and behavioural health of the children prior to treatment. It is evident that the children have fewer peer relationships than other children before treatment, positive changes have occurred after treatment regarding the active social development of the children.

Bohlander, Pål, Petersson, Mats January 2007 (has links)
This research examines within which way pedagogues, school management and people on political level look upon children with reading and writing difficulties. To find out we have chosen to conduct a qualitative interview with six pedagogues, two headmasters and two employees at the City administration. In order to create a picture of how children with reading and writing difficulties are looked upon, our study aims to do an empirical study. We have gone through existing research and history that underlie the existing perspective on children with reading and writing difficulties. By interviewing pedagogues, headmasters and employees on political level, our questions have been answered. Our result, with support from existing research, clearly shows that the view on children with reading and writing difficulties is constantly changing depending on the competence and knowledge within the area. Also, we have found that the view is divided in to two main groups.

Psychological Well-being Of Adolescents: Maternal Rearing Behaviors, Basic Personality Traits And Emotion Regulation Processes

Saritas, Dilek 01 October 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Parents remain to be effective in adolescents&rsquo / emotional development. However, emotion socialization research is fundamentally based on studies conducted in infancy through middle childhood, but late childhood and adolescence have been largely ignored. Therefore, the current study aimed to make contribution to the current literature investigating factors associated with adolescents&rsquo / emotion regulation difficulties. As the first part of the study psychometric properties of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) were examined among Turkish adolescent sample. A total of 312 high school students (161 females and 141 males) whose ages ranged between 14 and 17 years participated in the study and findings indicated strong evidence for the utility of the DERS as a measure of emotion regulation difficulties in adolescents. The main study consists of three different purposes. First, discrepancies between mothers&rsquo / and adolescents&rsquo / reports on adolescents&rsquo / emotion regulation difficulties were examined. Second, factors associated with adolescents&rsquo / emotion regulation difficulties such as mothers&rsquo / emotion regulation, psychopathology, and personality traits, maternal rearing behaviors, and adolescents&rsquo / personality traits were explored. Lastly, mediating roles of emotion regulation difficulties on the relationship between adolescents&rsquo / perception of their mothers&rsquo / maternal rearing behaviors and their psychological problems were examined. Participants of this research were 595 first-grade high school students aged between 14 and 16 years, and 365 mothers from eight different high schools in Ankara. Data was collected from both adolescents and their mothers through questionnaire packets. Adolescents&rsquo / questionnaire set consisted of scales measuring emotion regulation difficulties (DERS), positive and negative affect scale (PANAS), maternal rearing behaviors (EMBU), basic personality traits (Big Five), and adolescents&rsquo / externalizing (SDQ) and internalizing symptoms (CDI). Similarly, mothers&rsquo / questionnaire set consisted of scales measuring emotion regulation difficulties (DERS), children&rsquo / s emotion regulation (DERS), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), maternal rearing behaviors (EMBU), and basic personality traits (Big-Five). The results indicated that adolescents, both boys and girls, reported higher levels of difficulties in emotion regulation for themselves as compared to reports of mothers for their children. As expected, adolescents&rsquo / basic personality traits were significantly associated with their emotion regulation difficulties even after controlling the effects of socio-demographic variables, mothers&rsquo / emotion regulation, psychological symptoms and their maternal rearing behaviors. Finally, mediation analyses indicated that the link between perceived maternal rearing behaviors and adolescents&rsquo / psychological problems occurs through emotion regulation difficulties of adolescents. Findings were discussed within the relevant literature.
