Urban Design Competitions As Discursive Practice In Turkey: 1980-2009Cimen, Devrim 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
It is being observed that there has been an increase in the number of urban design competitions in the last decade in Turkey. Competitions are crucial methods of enriching theoretical and practical frameworks of the disciplines by creating a platform for discursive attitudes. That reveals the importance of the notion of competition as a process covering from the decision for organizing a competition to the decision of the jury for the winner and also post-competition events such as colloquium. Due to these facts, competition process as a whole can be considered as a discursive practice where diverse discursive approaches are represented via design brief, submitted projects and colloquiums that enrich and develop both theory and practice of urban design.
There is not a single definition for urban design rather there are some approaches to the field mostly pointing to its interdisciplinary features. This fact makes urban design field vulnerable and open to critiques but at the same time enables contributions from diverse disciplines. It reveals the importance of competitions which forms a platform for new ideas and perspectives. Competition, with its definite structure of rules, definite role players from diverse disciplines who are involved in the process, documents produced throughout the process by different discourses, can be conceptualized as a dimension in space-time that makes it possible to observe different discourses in the same place and at the same time, sometimes in conflict with each other, sometimes overlapped onto each other and sometimes juxtaposed. Therefore competition is a platform where different discursive formations, with their objects, enunciative modalities, concepts and strategies, are exercised and practiced by human subject. When considered from that point of view, instead of focusing on the inception of urban design in Turkey, when the term is conceptualized, how and when competitions were utilized and instrumentalized in spreading the term, as a consequence how this struggle enabled positions for the field can be diagnosed more explicitly.
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze urban design competition processes via design briefs, questions-answers, winning projects, jury reports and if available evaluation articles and colloquium reports with the adoption of archaeological methodology of Michel Foucault, discursive formation. His methodological approach in his book Archaeology of Knowledge(1972), has been adopted to construct a conceptual framework within that context, the study has focused on national, open, single phase competitions containing the term &ldquo / urban design&rdquo / in its announced title and it has been found that there are 35 cases starting from the year 1980. Design briefs, questions-answers, prize-winning projects and jury reports were analyzed, in addition survey and interview methods are utilized to reveal the discursive formations within the competition process. It is found that this is an ongoing process of forming a discursive formation when urban design is concerned and competitions play a significant role in framing such attitudes.
Such a discursive analysis made within the context of competitions will help us to draw a general framework to reveal the discursive formations in the field that will help us to understand its position, grasp the underlying facts behind these processes of Urban Design Competitions in Turkey and this will give us the chance to rethink and define new frameworks and discursive formations to establish new perspectives and understandings of urban design in Turkey in the context of competitions.

This work entitled “Echoes of a tradition: the idea of decadence in the work Epitoma Rei Militaris, of Flavius Vegetius Renatus” examines the writings of the said roman author of the fourth-fifth century A.D., whose treaty was intended to serve as the basis for a reform of the imperial army. I try to understand the operation of the idea of decadence in his work, based on the notion of discursive formation, developed by Michel Foucault. Based on this problematic, the statements, objects, strategies and concepts that compose and construct the discourse of decline are described. Throughout the analyzes of Vegetius and its sources the statements are linked to a decadent tradition. This research’s goal is to exam the dialogue between this tradition and the use of statements in the book in question.

Estudos para composição do eu e do(s) outro(s): enunciação, polifonia e imagens discursivas na cartilha da Campanha Nacional O Petróleo Tem que Ser Nosso / Studies for the composition of self and other(s) : ennunciation, polyphony and discursive images in the booklet of the National Campaign The Oil Has To Be OurFábio Carlos de Mattos da Fonseca 03 December 2010 (has links)
The announcement of the giant fields in the Brazilian pre-salt oil has put the target in the spotlight. The immense wealth and property of the inevitable changes in the legislation of the sector are the main issues arising from this fact. Indeed, we have witnessed a proliferation of discourses on the subject. This work is part of a set of reflections that take oil as an object of interest. We favor a specific space of discursive production, namely that introduced by the National Campaign The Oil Must Be Ours. A first methodological approach to data collection identified that, among its mobilization materials, is highlighted by the primer mass movement, which runs from July 2009 through the national territory. Subscribers perspective of discourse analysis based expository take care to build a reflection on some of the modes of entry (s) of subject (s) in the speech. Our considerations regarding the speech genres revealed hybridization of the primer, such peculiarity forced us to build devices for different analysis. In a first memento, we decided to observe the marks of a person, the temporal and spatial markers, in order to identify a particular scenery discursive (Maingueneau, 1997) which took us to images of coenunciadores; consider, second, the speeches reported (Bakhtin, 2006; Authier-Revuz, 1998 and others) to understand the polyphony inherent in the booklet. Our analysis shows how a regime of truth and memory are instituted for the scenography discourse, the discourse analysis reported, with emphasis on speeches direct, indirect and narrativised allowed us to identify, in the assemblage of voices, a place of confrontation between formations discursive differences

Previous issue date: 2008-12-18 / Supported on Discourse Analysis theoretical references derived from Michel Pêcheux and on the discourse studies proposed by Michel Foucault and Jean-Jacques Courtine, the research aims at following and evaluating the first thirteen editions of Revista piauí, whose first number was released in October, 2006, and at recognizing in this publication the installation of a discursive occurrence. As a hypothesis, we have guided ourselves by the fact that Revista piauí proposes a disruption in contemporary reading practices, which are sometimes characterized by the predominance of pictures and utilization of short objective texts that are addressed to readers who have little time to inquire. Against this order, piauí resists e defines itself as a magazine for those who like to read. The magazine proposes the retaking of literary
journalism, which is characterized by long authorial reports. Methodologically, we have selected the linguistic regularities in order to identify the discursive formation the magazine
has adopted. We have analyzed, based upon the notion of discursive genre proposed by Bakhtin style, compositional structure and thematic content , the genre subversions and
their effects of meaning. In addition, we have also tried to identify Revista piauí resistance fields on themes, language, reading practices. We have considered the concept of resistance as according to Michel Foucault: there is not any single power in society, but a relation of powers and resistances. From this relation among powers and resistances, we have tried to identify the presence of the interdiscourse the discursive memory that penetrates through the new publication. piauí has adopted a 1960 s resistance journalism, which was mainly symbolized by O Pasquim, a weekly publication that reflected Southern Rio de Janeiro city lifestyle. Considering that the nomination piauí refers to the smallest and poorest state of Brazilian Federation and that the new magazine title comes from a Tupi-Guarani-originated
expression, some final conclusions assign to the magazine an anthropophagous approach that makes piauí spread Brazility files, and the magazine irruption is linked with a feasible place
for the Brazilian experience in the actual context.

The studies about reading in Brazil are developed under different perspectives, so this research
aims to understand the production of meanings about the constitution of the reader and the
social memory of reading from textual / discursive materialities that point to the the functioning
of discursive formations and, consequently, interdiscourse. In order to achieve this goal, we
selected reading projects, reports and documents that circulate in ideological instances of
economic, juridic, religious and educational space. With the theoretical-methodological
background of French Line Discourse Analysis we conducted the discursive study of the
subject-reader object. The theoretical framework is subsidized by Michel Pêcheux (1995;1997;
2015), Eni P. Orlandi (2003;2007; 2008; 2015), Maria do Rosário V. Gregolin (2006), S.
Possenti (2003), José H. Nunes (1992;2003), Helena H. Brandão (2012) and Eduardo
Guimarães (1996, 2013). The course of this analysis is constructed under the following
categories: discourse, subject-form, ideology, interdiscourse, discursive formation, production
conditions, corpus, file and clipping. Regarding the approach, the research presents a qualitative
bias and for the composition of the empirical corpus we adopted documentary research. Taking
into consideration the outcome of this study, the method identified that the economic instance
takes back the sense of the mode of functioning of the subject of capitalism, since there are
prizes and financial recognitions for the work of reading. In the juridical instance, the subjectreader
is constituted from a model that recalls the memory of punishment, the knowledge that
comes from submission to rules. In the religious instance, there is the erasure of the construction
of the reading path and a work of disciplinarization of the subject-reader. In the educational
instance, specifically in the objectives of PNLL, we identify the meanings of an "official
discourse" that guarantees the liberalism of reading, aiming at the formation of a reading
society. In all instances there is the functioning of discursive formations that take up the
pedagogical practice. The senses operate in the dissemination of a culture that values and
encourages reading, forcing the erasure of a historical memory in which the Brazilian "does not
like to read." Thus, the constitution of the reader-subject occurs in the dispersion of the different
types of reading.
do ensino.
Michel Pêcheux (1995;1997; 2015); Eni P. Orlandi (2003; 2007; 2008; 2015); Maria do Rosário
V. Gregolin (2006); S. Possenti (2003); José H. Nunes (1992; 2003), Helena H. Brandão (2012)
e Eduardo Guimarães (1996; 2013). O percurso de análise é construído sob as seguintes
categorias: discurso, forma-sujeito, ideologia, interdiscurso, formação discursiva, condições de
produção, corpus, arquivo e recorte. Quanto à abordagem, a pesquisa apresenta um viés
qualitativo e para a composição do corpus empírico adotamos a pesquisa documental. No

Previous issue date: 2007-02-13 / Caipira music, or the call root Sertaneja music, is heard and/or admired for a few people.
This fact occurs due the crystallized image that the society, mainly in the urban zone, has of
the countryside man, which it is still seen, in the present, as a caricature. This fact can be seen
in the representation of the caipira Nerso da Capitinga in the TV program Zorra Total, of
Rede Globo (TV company). Therefore, the objective of this research is to reflect about this
representation of the countryside man, rescuing cultural and social elements that had allowed
that this image was crystallized from a pejorative and caricatured form. For this, it was used
the French branch of Discourse Analysis (DA) underlining the concepts of discursive
formations, ideological formations and discursive memory.

Previous issue date: 2008-06-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this thesis is the development of a process of inquiry concerning
what characterizes the work activity of journalists and the ethos working for a "real
time news agency by using the instruction to the double method, created for Oddone
with adaptations, emphasizing the contributions of language for approaching the
questions of work, having as a prescriptive document Reuters A handbook of Reuters
journalism - A guide to standards, style and operations. Theoretical grounds conjugate
notions from the linked dimensions of human activity we know as language and work,
in the perspective of their interdependent interrelationship. The main theoretical
references are Bakhtin and Maingueneau (in the field of language), Clot and Faïta,
Gorz, Sennett and Schwartz (in the field of work), Bucci, Chaparro and Rossi
(concerning journalism). The justification of this study resides in the one hand in the
social role the press has in the contemporary world, characterized as the information and
knowledge society and, in the other hand, the absence of research on news agencies
from a discursive point of view. The main discursive reference in the treatment of the
data is the Global Semantics developed by Maingueneau and, in the field of the work,
Ergology s grounds as developed by Schwartz, in a collaborative inter-discursive
relationship before the enigmas of journalist s professional activity. Research was done
at Reuters, the most important news agency of the world, having the
protagonist/journalist in the role of instructor and the researcher as the double. As a
final result, we perceive all efforts journalists do to develop their activity under
pressures both internal and external to the company where they work, the vital
importance of time for a flexible corporation and the tensions between chronological
time and the time of the company as a continuous flow of information production that
aims to make it be the best among competitors in the news market. It was possible to
perceive the central role of language in the development of journalists activity, in the
conflict between prescribed and done work, being discourse taken as both the raw
material for and the final result as news. This study also showed that journalists, in
order to do their professional work, live the predicament of conciliating the interests of
the company with the conditions to fulfill all tasks needed for developing their work
activity, carrying through a true debate on values, in a tension between norms and the
need to renormalize, between prescriptions and the accomplishment of the set of their
tasks, pressured by both speed and accuracy - two of the four Reuters principles. Taken
in this quandary, journalists, before the telephone, television sets and two computer
screens, mobilize themselves in their daily professional routine, having to face
deontological and discursive questions inherent to their activity. We identify this
quandary by examining two discursive formations that make them to work in the
intersection of these attitudes: that of the company s and that of one working for a realtime
news agency. Pressured by the fear of not getting a scoop, without time to do a
careful investigation, they tend to believe more than they should on their sources and
may write news without due confirmation, comparing a less than should be expected
number of discourses in a process less vulnerable to error or to influences of particular
groups and people in the process of definition of the facts that must be turned into news / O objetivo desta tese é desenvolver um processo de investigação acerca de
interdependente. As principais referências teóricas são: Bakhtin e Maingueneau (no
campo da linguagem), Clot e Faïta, Gorz, Sennett e Schwartz (no campo do trabalho),
Bucci, Chaparro e Rossi (acerca do jornalismo).
A principal referência
atividade profissional do jornalista.
