Film om film : En analys av dokumentärfilmer om fiktionsfilmer / Film on film : An analysis of documentaries on feature films

Strömberg, Daniel January 2003 (has links)
This thesis is a study of documentaries about fictional feature films. The development of the DVD format has contributed strongly to their massive increase in quantity. The capacity of the format enables film companies to include more material than the feature film itself. As some people regard this type of documentary as self-righteous and presumtious, others think of it as a great educational aid giving the audience a greater understanding of the intentions of the director and others involved, thus adding more levels to the experience of watching movies. By using established theory on documentary I’m trying to find distinctive features of ‘documentary on fiction’.

La pratique des séries télévisées : une sociologie de l’activité spectatorielle / The practice of TV series : a sociology of the activity of spectating

Combes, Clément 12 September 2013 (has links)
What does it means to love a "TV series" nowadays? Or, to use a more pragmatic formulation, what do television series make their viewers do? To answer these questions, this thesis invites the reader to move beyond the paradigm of reception – on which the majority of studies in the field build upon - and explore the remits and contours of the practice of series. The aim is to study the practical activities undertaken by amateurs, how their attachments to the series are built, the ingredients of this attachment, and the material, technical and relational means of this attachment. This work shows that spectators' practices do not stop at the moment of viewing, when the individual is in front of his post, but extends to all activities, times and spaces through which an individual connects to a series. Drawing upon forty in-depth interviews and an examination of the ways in which series are socio-technically mediated, the thesis proposes to follow amateurs in their daily practices, from the viewing and storage of series, to their conversational exchanges, as well as through the procedures of information and discovery, procurement and sharing of content. All these activities are not only "receptive". As the thesis shows, they are at once reflexive, embodied, instrumented and collective, and they reveal the diversity of attachments of the "seriephiles" to these singular objects.

Predicting the Longevity of DVDR Media by Periodic Analysis of Parity, Jitter, and ECC Performance Parameters

Wells, Daniel Patrick 14 July 2008 (has links) (PDF)
For the last ten years, DVD-R media have played an important role in the storage of large amounts of digital data throughout the world. During this time it was assumed that the DVD-R was as long-lasting and stable as its predecessor, the CD-R. Several reports have surfaced over the last few years questioning the DVD-R's ability to maintain many of its claims regarding archival quality life spans. These reports have shown a wide range of longevity between the different brands. While some DVD-Rs may last a while, others may result in an early and unexpected failure. Compounding this problem is the lack of information available for consumers to know the quality of the media they own. While the industry works on devising a standard for labeling the quality of future media, it is currently up to the consumer to pay close attention to their own DVD-R archives and work diligently to prevent data loss. This research shows that through accelerated aging and the use of logistic regression analysis on data collected through periodic monitoring of disc read-back errors it is possible to accurately predict unrecoverable failures in the test discs. This study analyzed various measurements of PIE errors, PIE8 Sum errors, POF errors and jitter data from three areas of the disc: the whole disc, the region of the disc where it first failed as well as the last half of the disc. From this data five unique predictive equations were produced, each with the ability to predict disc failure. In conclusion, the relative value of these equations for end-of-life predictions is discussed.

Frota, Ana Laura Rolim da January 2008 (has links)
Greimas, E. Landowski, J.M. Floch, Ana Claudia de Oliveira, Maria Sílvia Fantinatti, Christianne Maria da Bôa Viagem Oliveira, Ana Sílvia Médola e Jacques Fontanille. / The aim of this study is to provide knowledge, assessment and understanding of linguistic syncretism in a digital moving image production. It deals specifically with the hearers’ understanding of the DVD “The Universe of Art” – Fayga Ostrower; with the identification of the effects of meaning hearers can elicit from the syncretic text, and with the analysis of the type of information and knowledge conveyed by the documentary to the focal research group and of its influence on hearers' lives. Junior high school students belonging to the visual arts group of a federal public school in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, participated in the study. Greimas’ semiotics, best known as discursive semiotics or French semiotics, was used for corpus analysis. The 15-minute DVD, produced by Rede Senac de Televisão, São Paulo, Brazil, was semiotically analyzed. During the semiotic analysis, one could perceive the importance that the DVD had for those students who watched it. Its cultural function was also clear. The semiotization of the text under analysis allowed investigating figurativization strategies, thematic and manipulation, which could be evidenced through enunciation on the plane of meaning, concretized by linguistic syncretism on the plane of expression. It is by the semiosis between these two planes that the meaning grasped by hearers is constructed. The relationship between speaker and hearer and the text, using semiotic analysis, constitute the primary goal of this investigation, i.e., to analyze the object of study based on the theories formulated by A.J. Greimas, E. Landowski, J.M. Floch, Ana Claudia de Oliveira, Maria Sílvia Fantinatti, Christianne Maria da Bôa Viagem Oliveira, Ana Sílvia Médola and Jacques Fontanille.

Modeling The Dynamics Of Creative Industries: The Case Of Film Industries

Oruc, Sercan 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Dynamic complexity occurs in every social structure. Film industry, as a type of creative industries, constitutes a dynamic environment where uncertainty is at high levels. This complexity of the environment renders the more traditional operations research models somewhat ineffective, and thus, requires a dynamic analysis. In this study, a model showing the dynamics of film exhibition is given. The interactions within and between the theatrical and the DVD sales channels are implemented by the model. Later on, the possible effects of piracy to the model are discussed, using the inferences obtained by the created model. The model is examined with scenario and sensitivity analysis. All the modeling studies are done with a commercial dynamic systems modeling software. The model also can be extended for the whole film industry, or for some other creative industries like the publishing industry.
