Kruté potěšení v díle markýze de Sade a jeho následovnic / Cruel pleasure in the piece of the Marquis de Sade and his followersKoubková, Jana January 2012 (has links)
The thesis is devoted to the work of the French writer and philosopher Donatien Alphonse François de Sade and three female 20th-century French novelists Laure, Pauline Réage and Jeanne de Berg, whose work draws inspiration from Sade's. In the first part of the thesis we focus on the Marquis de Sade. First, we recount the key events in Sade's adolescence and family life, his sexual indulgences and particularly his lengthy imprisonment, as these had profound influence on his work. Next we highlight the relevant historical incidents of his time and discuss the position of his work within the so- called libertin literary movement. Then we proceed to analyze the themes and motifs of Sade's three pivotal books: 120 Days of Sodom (Les Cent Vingt Journées de Sodome), Justine (Justine ou les Malheurs de la vertu), and Juliette (Histoire de Juliette). Our analysis points out a deeper philosophical message that can be found behind erotic themes of Sade's work. In the final sections we describe the fate of Sade's legacy in the 19th century and also his rehabilitation in the 20th century, when his writings have finally been critically studied and his collective works published. The second part of the thesis concentrates on Sade's female followers in the 20th century: Collette Peignot alias Laure (Laure: Écrits),...

Previous issue date: 2013-10-04 / This study aims to comprehend the changes on the discourses and practices
of sexuality considering the transformations that occurred in the last decades. Under
the principles of the Systemic thinking and Social Construccionism, we seek to
understand how the discourse and discursive practices about eroticism and sexuality
are presented comparatively in two distinct historical moments in the two versions of
the film Lolita, in 1962 and 1997, and that refer to the manifestations of desire and
pursuit of pleasure. A qualitative analyzes was done with emphasis on the social
poetics highlighting the defining moments of each segmentation of the movie that
were then forwarded to units of meaning. We emphasize throughout this process
that the definition of eroticism cannot be considered isolated from the contexts and
the linguistic communities that establish the meaning of this dialogue and how the
social constructions are inserted in a particular time and culture that also change

This research studies a key subject in the work of the Mexican poet and essayist Octavio Paz (1914-1998): the analogies between eroticism, poetry and the sacred as three human ways of union, reconciliation, and liberation that are particularly reinforced in his work since his journey to and stay in the East –especially in India- between 1951 and 1968.
During the period called Hindu cycle (‘ciclo hindu’), Paz was interested in different traditions of oriental thought such as Buddhism, especially in its tantric orientation. This study analyses the significant contributions of Buddhism to Paz’s work. The examination of concepts like vacuity, silence, another shore (‘otra orilla’), ecstatic transcendental union, and liberation proves that Paz studied the analogies between eroticism, poetry and the sacred in depth, broaching them not just as reconciliation experiences but taking them further (‘más allá’) to the transcendental level of ecstatic union in vacuity.
Although a large number of Paz’s works are considered, from El arco y la lira (1956) to Vislumbres de la India (1995), particular attention is dedicated to two poetics texts which are the most representative of his encounter with the East - Ladera Este (1969) and El mono gramático (1974) - where we can observe the analogies that Paz established between eroticism, poetry and tantric Buddhism, through the experiences of ‘otherness’, which proposes to man the search of the ‘other’ to reconcile in unity, and dissipate in vacuity.
The general conclusion of the study emphasizes that eroticism, poetry and tantric Buddhism are proposed in Octavio Paz’s work as three parallel ways of revelation from which human being can achieve plenitude, which is manifest in the ecstatic experience.

Gertrude Stein's cubist brain mapsKippen, Lorelee 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores the connections that exist between Gertrude Steins late nineteenth-century psychological studies at Harvard University, her fin-de-sicle brain research at the Johns Hopkins Medical School, and her early twentieth-century cubist writings. This study is important to neuraesthetic researchers, because it appears that Stein produced a secret series of cubist brain maps from approximately 1912 to 1935, and then published her first explicit brain map in _The Geographical History of America or the Relation of Human Nature to the Human Mind_, in 1936. The cubist brain maps that Stein produced during this period can be conceptualized as evolving, neuraesthetic writing practices that reflect her complex, scientific insights and her varied, artistic associations. One of the primary differences between Steins cubist writings and those of her literary peers is that she deploys the cubist painting strategies of Pablo Picasso, for the purpose of portraying the human central nervous system. In addition to exploring the scientific meanings of Steins multidimensional, performative and introspective cubist puns, my study examines how Stein uses color in her cubist writings, as a means of anticipating the visual effects of future scientific discoveries and connectivity maps, such as the Brainbow system, which uses the fluorescent protein from the jellyfish Aequorea Victoria to label the central nervous systems of genetically modified mice with distinguishable colors. Also, this project examines how Stein uses color words and other simple devices from the English language to illustrate the brains cellular structures, neural networks and neuroanatomical features. This studys primary aim is to explore how Steins dissociative writings function within western culture as neuraesthetic modes of masterpiece creation, brain representation and consciousness translation. Through the serial production of cubist brain maps, Stein posed important questions about the modern science of the reading brain. By developing allegorical methods of brain representation, Stein contributes to the western practice of neuroesthetics by foregrounding the role that creative writing plays in the production of imaginary, laboratory practices and imaginative, brain imaging technologies.

The aim of this work is to analyze the book Poemas malditos, gozosos e devotos (1984) of the Brazilian writer Hilda Hilst (1930 – 2004). The study searches the devoted, cursed and joyful search done by the subject in the poem who aims to obtain the knowledge about himself and about the sacred, represented by the idea of God. In the analyses of the poems it is unveiled the way that this attempt of relationship of “I” facing the object is constructed through the language, from the tension between search and distance and between flesh and spirit, given that in the poems God is the desired lover, but is completely distant and ignores the cries of those who search Him interruptedly and with sacrifice.

Identity politics and the body in selected comtemporary artworksDe Villiers, Cecilia Helene 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation concerns the socio-cultural politics expressed in the performances of
Matthew Barney, Steven Cohen, Marina Abramovic, and the ‘Pop’ artist Madonna. The
contention is that these artists mirror and dramatize marginalization and seem to reflect a
desire to resolve conflicts experienced between social and psychological identities in
contemporary society. The premise of this study is that these performers engage in a
‘dialogue’ with viewers as a form of self-preservation and self-healing.
The Performance artists’ measure of socio-cultural tensions suggests the merging of mass
media entertainment, theatrical devices and other cultural practices such as fetishism and
rituals involving altered states of consciousness, props and allusions to shamanism. An
ancient modality of healing, such as shamanism, when appropriated by artists, seems to
reflect an urgent phenomenological need of the individual within Western society for
overcoming feelings of powerlessness as a type of therapeutic practice. The Performance
artists’ Othering is acted out as a survival mechanism addressing and questioning the
‘degradation’ imposed on marginalized individuals who challenge the traditional notion of authentic identity and the ‘classic’ body. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M.A. (Visual Arts)

Through the analysis of eroticism and the way it is used in short tales authored by women of Central America, this thesis demonstrates the significance of the study of the erotic discourse as well as its evolution and the latest trends. In the first chapter- the introduction- we briefly explain the social and historical context of Cen-tral America, in order to draw attention to an area still unknown at the current time. Afterwards, we will intro-duce our method of analysis, the objectives and the consulted sources. In the second chapter we submit a chronology of eroticism in literature which starts by The Song of Songs and finishes by a debate about Gender Studies and the Queer Theory. It is crucial to observe the evolution of eroticism as well as its significance.

A BURLA DO CORPO completa.pdf: 62838222 bytes, checksum: 5df21f041ac8b4a2f3da9784f8a8ee00 (MD5) / O corpo é o lugar onde as pesquisas artística e acadêmica se articulam para gerar questões
problematizadas.
alguns processos criativos (dos trabalhos Los Juegos Provechosos, 2009; Simpatia Full Time,
The body is the local where the artistic and the academic researches are articulated to generate
problematized issues in this work. Here, the methodological horizons are based on a
geographical thinking, in a spatial point of view, that seeks to drawing up cartographically the
concepts that are being built throughout the research process. Inspired by the thought of
authors such as Nietzsche, Foucault, Susan Sontag, Oswald de Andrade, Cassia Lopes and
Suely Rolnik, the body emerges not only as an object but as the subject in this study. The
burla – extracted from the frame of the burlesque genre (studied in etymological dictionary,
literary terms dictionary, in Georges Minois's article The Burlesque Laughter, as well on the
analysis of the New Burlesque movement) – appears like a strategy to the creation of the body
which want to operate from its scars (some of which are the gender, seen by Judith Butler, as
well as colonialism and stereotyping, highlighted by Homi K. Bhabha, among others), giving
visibility to potency and characteristics that are prevented from developing within the
discourses of colonial and rationalist tradition. It's possible to note through the description and
analysis of some creative processes (the works Los Juegos Provechosos, 2009; Simpatia Full
Time, 2008-2010; Burlescas, 2009; Salmon Nela, 2007; and Technomaravilha, 2010), the
blockade and entrapment points from the stereotypes that becomes evident when the body is
in performance. In the burla of the body, it breaks up with logical and normalizing practices,
creating possibilities for reinvention. This research discusses, in addition, a certain fixity of
procedures and methodologies in the field of the performing arts (dance and theater). Such
fixed points also supports for the maintenance of body conceptions that a politically engaged
art practice needs to review and modify. The question of Spinoza, updated by Deleuze and
Guattari – what can a body do? – is a north query. From the mentioned artistic practices (in
which I participated as a performer) emerges the shaking body – blurring boundaries and
inaugurating a peculiar erotica born in the performative act (Massimo Canevacci). This shake
becomes one of the possible ways to start the burla of the body. The body that does the burla
is one artistic answer to André Lepecki's issue how to revert the colonization of the body,
because it could be a way to read and to criticize cultural data.
