L'évolution de la conception de la famille dans l'œuvre camusienne / The evolution of the conception of family in Albert Camus’s work

Boudaa, Louiza 17 December 2015 (has links)
The notion of family is highly central to Camus’s work. The axial nature of this concept is an impetus to begin this thesis which aims at examining the expanse of this concept on Camus’s thinking. This major theme is supported by other ones as brotherhood, solidarity and above all humanity. We have chosen to divide it on four parts of analysis:The first part deals with natural descent. It is more about the impact of family characters on Camus’s work than on the autobiographical side; dealt throughout the three adopted cycles Absurdism, revolt, and at last love and reconciliation. The evolution of the son character towards the cycle of revolt in the mid of inevitable ups and downs took part in the emergence of fraternity desire, and this is the major theme in the second part. The study of this trend towards brotherhood has allowed us to uncover a necessary measure in the relationships. This measure recalled in “the eloquent silence” enhance the importance of “la pensée solaire” inherent in the ancestral Mediterranean Sea, and this makes it an object of study in the third part. The paradigms linked to this ancestral Sea are not exclusively specific to one community without another. Their adoption in Camus’s work allowed it to strive towards a larger parenthood; the parenthood of humanity dealt with in the last part. We have concluded by asserting the necessity of imagining the “first man” happy. The incompletion of Le Premier homme should not blur the evolution of the family conception to a human relationship, highlighted in the myth of autochthony.

The Influence of Fraternity and Sorority Characteristics on Alcohol Exposure: Who is at Risk?

Shupe, Sydney 01 May 2022 (has links)
Fraternity and sorority membership has been among the highest contributing factors linked to increased exposure to alcohol consumption among college students. Many have argued that this association persists as a result of the drinking sub-culture among Greek organizations, and report that finding effective methods to minimize alcohol consumption among college students is critical. Using self-reported data from fraternity and sorority members at East Tennessee State University (n=107) the link between observed alcohol consumption and demographic characteristics of the individual Greek member and the Greek organization was examined through a quantitative lens. It was hypothesized that the demographic characteristics of the individual Greek member and the characteristics of the Greek organization would affect observed alcohol consumption. The results reveal no statistical significance for many of the hypotheses, however the data revealed significant findings when the living status of a Greek organization member and the link to observed alcohol consumption.

Frat Star

Holic, Nathan Andrew 01 January 2007 (has links)
This thesis, a social novel in the tradition of Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities and Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, is all at once an attentive first-person study of a twenty-something man close to his cracking point in his first post-college job, a detailed expose of national fraternities, and the sweeping panoramic view of an entire generation of over-programmed college students searching for direction. Frat Star follows a fragile college graduate named Charles Washington, who takes a position as an "Educational Consultant" with a national fraternity in his first semester after graduation. For sixteen straight weeks, he drives across the country, from college to college and fraternity house to fraternity house, meeting with alumni and students, and living on frat house couches and in seedy off-exit hotels. As he travels, the pressure mounts for Charles to convince his family and friends back home that this is a "Real Job" and that his work actually matters to the business world, but at each new fraternity house he visits, his yearning for the old college atmosphere grows--the beer, the parties, the girls!--threatening to send him into a frightening tailspin. How can he be a professional when the temptations of youth still seem so attractive? And before Charles can sort out what is happening in his own life, he finds himself stuck in a vicious tug-of-war between students, alumni, administrators, and the national fraternity, when he must deal with one particularly abrasive undergraduate fraternity and the aftermath of its disastrous decisions. Spanning thousands of miles, from Florida to California, from Illinois to New Mexico, this thesis takes us inside fraternity houses, into their attics and their basements, behind the scenes of their rituals and ceremonies, inside their parties, inside their heads, giving us a view not only of the power of the national fraternity, but the disconnect between alumnus and student, between Baby Boomer and Generation X and Millennial. Incorporating research as varied as the generational studies of Howe and Strauss, and Alexandra Robbins' psychological study of the "Quarterlife Crisis," Frat Star stretches across the country, stretches across genre, stretches from text to illustration, but is ultimately the human story of a young man's longing for morality, independence, and purpose in a world he simply has not been prepared to understand.

Fraternity and sorority members versus non-members: A comparative study of undergraduate student engagement; development of values; and connection to campus

Morat, Derick A. 01 January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Seven hundred thousand college undergraduates are members of men's and women's fraternities in the United States and Canada. Fraternal organizations, or fraternities and sororities, claim they exist to enrich students' lives and enhance the educational mission of universities. However, strong resistance exists within academic ranks to the existence and perpetuation of these organizations. This resistance calls for the study of the college fraternity to determine what, if any, roles the organizations play in the experiences and development of undergraduate students. This study examined and compared reported outcomes associated with the undergraduate college experiences of fraternity and sorority members versus students who are not members. Significant differences in student outcomes were analyzed in relation to three defined principles and objectives of student affairs practice: (1) student engagement; (2) the ability of students to develop coherent values and ethical standards; and (3) the connection of students to a supportive and inclusive community.

Models of Utopia: Representations of Nineteenth-Century Paris

Stone, Shiloh Joseph 19 December 2013 (has links)
In the texts analyzed in this thesis, nineteenth-century Paris illustrates the utopian principles formulated by Karl Mannheim whose conceptualizations concern the social and moral order that makes up human existence. His utopia is characterized by human thoughts, behaviors, and actions. In our analysis of the works by Charles Fourier, Victor Hugo, and Emile Zola, common themes emerge as each writer undertakes the task of representing the past, present, and future Paris. They describe ideas of poverty, sickness, and revolution as well as the importance of education, progress, and moral order. The most telling conclusion of utopia unveiled in the thesis is that each writer also depicts his vision of Paris with a specific and unique designation. For Fourier, a utopian Paris is described as Harmony. A harmonious state of being represents a society built on agreement, cooperation, and order. Hugo's representation of Paris comes under the epithet of Humanity and Fraternity. Hugo believes that Paris held the key to unlocking a society built on benevolence, cooperation, and camaraderie. Zola designates Paris as Modernity. For Zola, modernity creates a paradox of utopia/dystopia and order/disorder. However, Paris offers the hope of a ville beatitude wherein the well-being of all the families would be of highest priority to create happiness, security, and order. Though each writer had a different idealization of Paris, the analysis of utopian mentalities foregrounds their outlook on not only the city-space but of humanity which held much promise for harmony, happiness, and order in a future "utopian" state. / Master of Arts

Today, as never before, we live process of universal inclusion of various types of rights, which does not mean a direct relation to the realization of human rights. The struggle for the right remains everyday. This relentless pursuit of a more fraternal society need to build and cross bridges that lead us to respect and penetrating new emerging human rights, in this dissertation we study the right to health just like this ‘bridge’ for the realization of the right to the right. Thus, this thesis will deal-the theme of the right to health in the context of the cooperation of the BRICS schedule, understanding that the realization of this right can be a ‘bridge’ to the execution of other social rights. The BRICS reveals new ways of living in cosmopolitan society, a process that starts, especially, in the post-World War II. The economic blocks of regional integration can no longer cope responding to the complexity of society, in particular, regarding to the elimination of contradictions, social and economic inequalities and uneven development between nations. Thereby, just by being part of this group geographically distant countries and very different, but at the same time, from a fraternal look can see the other as a another self, is the place that visualizes concrete possibilities of social transformation through a new form of international cooperation between these countries, in addition to economic development, aims implement human rights. The right to health - as a ‘bridge’ for the realization of other human rights - appears in this new agenda of cooperation within BRICS, representing a basic social right to human development, which breaks boundaries, thus enabling the creation consensus and agreements and running for overcome the barrier of a sovereign state. These assumptions are essential, since they are part of the metatheory of fraternal law, conceptual basis for this dissertation. Besides the analysis based on this theory, it sought other ways to search and uncover old / new concepts through a new cooperation model, which broke with traditional forms of integration. These assumptions have guided both the bibliographic research and the study of political and legal instruments and participation in congresses, which allowed the construction of this dissertation, which is not a definitive conclusion on the subject, but a ‘bridge’ to deepen as the right health still needs to be studied and discussed.

Gêmeos, subjetividade e narcisismo: especificidades interferentes / Twins, subjectivity and e narcissism: specificities interferants

It is an unusual situation, where one ovule is divided in two, causing, then, the creation of two identical human beings: exactly the same sanguineous group, physical enzymes, proteins, physical characteristics and pathological trends: human being in duplicate. This situation represents another challenge for the parents in the performance of maternity and paternity proper tasks. The double births guide them to life mysteries - the reproduction and the intrauterine space. When parents stand out the equal equalities in their choices of similar names, clothes and toys, actually they are denying the pair, considering them as if they were only one such attitudes lead to future consequences For the proper twin, it represents one more difficulty related to the achievement of a unique and singular identity, since they mutually follow themselves, without being illusion or hallucination. As a result they face some questions: Which are the consequences of living in the privacy of the identical and having to compose and recognize themselves as exterior and different? How to obtain a proper place in their parents desire, the family and later in the social environment, in spite of the false recognizing and the confusions of all, incapable of a steady differentiation? This present study is based on the thought of Sigmund Freud and other psychoanalyst authors, as, Otto Rank, André Green, Jacques Lacan, René Kaes, Joyce McDougall, Eduardo Braier, Beatriz Salzberg, Bernard Tanis, Renato Mezan, Maria Rita Kehl and others who contribute for the clarification of the questions involving twins: the specular images, the shadows, spirits, the idea of soul, the strange question about the double and identical, the narcissism experience and the fraternity complex. The used method is the conceptual analysis of the selected texts and clinical material placed in discussion and it has the Psychoanalyst Clinic as elementary and purpose / Esta dissertação procura esclarecer a especificidade dos nascimentos gemelares e possíveis conseqüências tanto no imaginário parental quanto dos próprios gêmeos.

The most affected by these ailments are the workers who end up being forced to submit to certain situations due to the need of employment. These situations that often labor law and can not prevent or cure. From the verification of constitutional humanistic capitalism and its measurement in the international arena in terms of Human Rights ruled by Law of Universal Brotherhood, we will see how it applies in Labor Law operated by the Economic Law. Thus, we extend the framework of protection away from people and the abuse of economic power that seeks to profit by profit, without caring about the human cost that might occur by chance / Em uma época de instabilidade e incertezas no mercado econômico nacional e internacional, o Capitalismo Humanista, doutrina humanística de Direito Econômico, se mostra como a melhor saída ante as externalidades negativas do mercado, que assombram as pessoas menos abastadas.
